A sizeable portion of the societal drain from cocaine abuse results from the complications of in utero drug exposure. Because of challenges in using humans and mammalian model organisms as test subjects, much debate remains about the impact of in utero cocaine exposure. Zebrafish offer a number of advantages as a model in longitudinal toxicology studies and are quite sensitive physiologically and behaviorally to cocaine. In this study, we have used zebrafish to model the effects of embryonic pre-exposure to cocaine on development and on subsequent cardiovascular physiology and cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in longitudinal adults. Larval fish showed …
Living Alone And Subsequent Living Arrangement Transitions Among Older Americans, Yao-Chi Shih
Living Alone And Subsequent Living Arrangement Transitions Among Older Americans, Yao-Chi Shih
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Past research often considers living alone as a risk factor for older persons. In fact, adverse health outcomes are associated with living arrangement transitions, suggesting a need to consider the dynamic process of living arrangements. Using eight waves of the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2012), this study examines three research questions: (1) Do older Americans’ living arrangements exhibit a pattern of sequence? (2) What are implications of living arrangements at particular older ages on life expectancy? (3) What factors predict transitions out of a living alone arrangement?
The first analysis displays and classifies ordered patterns of living arrangements over time. …
Identification And Use Of Indicator Data To Develop Models For Marine-Sourced Risks In Massachusetts Bay, Marin M. Kress
Identification And Use Of Indicator Data To Develop Models For Marine-Sourced Risks In Massachusetts Bay, Marin M. Kress
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The coastal watersheds around Massachusetts Bay are home to millions of people, many of whom recreate in coastal waters and consume locally harvested shellfish. Epidemiological data on food-borne illness and illnesses associated with recreational water exposure are known to be incomplete. Of major food categories, seafood has the highest recorded rate of associated foodborne illness. In total, the health impacts from these marine-sourced risks are estimated to cost millions of dollars each year in medical expenses or lost productivity. When recorded epidemiological data is incomplete it may be possible to estimate abundance or prevalence of specific pathogens or toxins in …
The Preparation And Self-Efficacy Of Teachers Of Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disabilities, Claire F. Higgins
The Preparation And Self-Efficacy Of Teachers Of Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disabilities, Claire F. Higgins
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Inadequate preparation, combined with challenging work conditions, contribute to the shortage of skilled special educators in the United States (Levenson, 2011). Because teacher quality is linked to student achievement (Darling-Hammond, 2001), the discrepancy in access to qualified teachers has remained a serious issue, particularly for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD), whose intensive needs present great obstacles to learning. Although the research identifies strong content knowledge and social emotional competence as critical skills for educators (Bridgeland, Bruce, & Hariharan, 2012; Shulman, 1986), current standards for licensure (as they apply to EBD teachers) largely overlook these attributes (Massachusetts Department of …
Dissolved Organic Carbon Fluxes From A New England Salt Marsh, Hayley Nicole Schiebel
Dissolved Organic Carbon Fluxes From A New England Salt Marsh, Hayley Nicole Schiebel
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Blue carbon systems (mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass beds) sequester large amounts of carbon via primary productivity and sedimentation. Sequestered carbon can be respired back to the atmosphere, buried for long time periods, or exported (“outwelled”) to adjacent ecosystems. This study estimates the total outwelling of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the Neponset Salt Marsh (Boston, Massachusetts) as well as the major plant and sediment processes contributing to the overall flux. The total export was quantified via high-resolution in situ chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) measurements as a proxy for DOC using 12 years of transect data. Seasonal trends, alternate …
External Validation And Cost Effectiveness Analysis Of The Non-Lb Framingham Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment Algorithm In The Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities Dataset, Jacob K. Kariuki
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Background: In recent years, non-Laboratory based (non-LB) risk assessment algorithms have been developed to facilitate absolute cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment in resource constrained primary care settings. The non-LB Framingham algorithm, which substitutes body mass index (BMI) for lipids, has the best discrimination and calibration among the published algorithms, but its external validity and cost-effectiveness have not been determined.
Purpose: External validation and comparative effectiveness analysis of the non-LB versus laboratory based (LB) Framingham algorithm in a racially diverse population, and simulated cost-effectiveness analysis focusing on a black sample.
Methods: Secondary data analysis was performed using the Atherosclerosis Risk in …
The Influence Of Mentor-Youth Activity Profiles On School-Based Youth Mentoring Relationship Processes And Outcomes, Stella S. Kanchewa
The Influence Of Mentor-Youth Activity Profiles On School-Based Youth Mentoring Relationship Processes And Outcomes, Stella S. Kanchewa
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Although quality formal mentoring relationships are associated with beneficial effects on youth’s academic and social-emotional development, these effects have been relatively modest. As such, research has focused on factors that may contribute to relationship quality. Within this context, relatively little is known about the effects of activities that matches engage in on relationship processes and youth outcomes. The purpose of the current study was to investigate associations between mentor-youth activities, and processes and outcomes of school-based mentoring. First, a person-centered approach using latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to examine whether match activity (i.e., how matches spend their time together) …

Raman spectroscopy was applied to nail clippings from 633 postmenopausal British and Irish women, from six clinical sites, of whom 42% had experienced a fragility fracture. The objective was to build a prediction algorithm for fracture using data from four sites (known as the calibration set) and test its performance using data from the other two sites (known as the validation set). Results from the validation set showed that a novel algorithm, combining spectroscopy data with clinical data, provided area under the curve (AUC) of 74% compared to an AUC of 60% from a reduced QFracture score (a clinically accepted …
Fetal Personhood In The Christian Philippines: The View From A Visayan Island, Hannah C. Bulloch
Fetal Personhood In The Christian Philippines: The View From A Visayan Island, Hannah C. Bulloch
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Issues of fetal personhood have been controversial in the Philippines in the context of reproductive health debates, but little is understood about how ordinary Filipinos construct fetal and early infant personhood in the context of their everyday lives. Thisarticle draws on ethnographic research in Siquijor, a Central Visayan island with a Catholic population. Based on conversations about pregnancy and miscarriage, I show that unlike notions promoted by elites of the Catholic Church, which fix personhood to the moment of conception, local notions of personhood are processual. Significantly, ensoulment, while thought to occur at conception, is not sufficient to produce a …

Geographical Imagination And Intra-Asian Hierarchy Between Filipinos And South Korean Retirees In The Philippines, Dohye; Department Kim
Geographical Imagination And Intra-Asian Hierarchy Between Filipinos And South Korean Retirees In The Philippines, Dohye; Department Kim
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Dwindling economic opportunities in South Korea after the financial crisis of1997 spurred forced retirement, with the Philippines emerging as a viable destination for relatively young South Korean retirees. Relations between these retirees and Filipinos have been influenced by the colonial-era system of racial hierarchy, resulting in intra-Asian hierarchies held by both groups. Shedding light on racial relations between postcolonial peoples, thisarticle shows how South Korean retirees’ feelings of economic superiority and communal exclusiveness are challenged by the sociocultural advancement of Filipino middle classes. Among South Korean retirees in the Philippines, the imaginary distance between the two countries has widened. Keywords: South …

In-Air Hearing Of A Diving Duck: A Comparison Of Psychoacoustic And Auditory Brainstem Response Thresholds, Sara E. Crowell, Alicia M. Wells-Berlin, Ronald E. Therrien, Sally E. Yannuzzi, Catherine E. Carr
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Auditory sensitivity was measured in a species of diving duck that is not often kept in captivity, the lesser scaup. Behavioral (psychoacoustics) and electrophysiological [the auditory brainstem response (ABR)] methods were used to measure in-air auditory sensitivity, and the resulting audiograms were compared. Both approaches yielded audiograms with similar U-shapes and regions of greatest sensitivity (2000-3000 Hz). However, ABR thresholds were higher than psychoacoustic thresholds at all frequencies. This difference was least at the highest frequency tested using both methods (5700 Hz) and greatest at 1000 Hz, where the ABR threshold was 26.8 dB higher than the behavioral measure of …

Lysobacter species are Gram-negative bacteria that are emerging as new sources of antibiotics, including HSAF (Heat Stable Antifungal Factor), which was identified from L. enzymogenes with a new mode of action. LesR, a LuxR solo, was recently shown to regulate the HSAF biosynthesis via an unidentified mechanism in L. enzymogenes OH11. Here, we used a comparative proteomic approach to identify the LesR targets and found that LesR influenced the expression of 33 proteins belonging to 10 functional groups, with 9 proteins belonging to the TBDR (TonB-Dependent Receptor) family. The fundamental role of bacterial TBDR in nutrient uptake motivates us to …
Oxidation Kinetics Of Metallic Powders, Hongqi Nie
Oxidation Kinetics Of Metallic Powders, Hongqi Nie
Dissertations
Aluminum and magnesium are widely used in pyrotechnic formulations and other energetic materials; they are also common components of reactive alloys, e.g., Al-Mg and B-Mg, and others, which are potential fuels for explosives and propellants. Reaction mechanisms and oxidation kinetics of aluminum, magnesium and Al-Mg alloy powders in different oxidizing environments are investigated using thermo-analytical measurements. New methods of data processing are developed, relying on measured particle size distributions of the reactive spherical powders. It became possible to identify the reaction interface location for many heterogeneous metal oxidation processes; for several reactions, detailed kinetic descriptions are obtained.
For aluminum powders, …

Antibacterial Efficacy Of Nanometals In Conjunction With Electrical Stimulus, Syed A. Hussain
Antibacterial Efficacy Of Nanometals In Conjunction With Electrical Stimulus, Syed A. Hussain
Theses
Hospital related infections generally result from the combined effect of preexisting bacteria on the patient and invasive devices. This demonstrates the significance in improving these medical devices to increase the quality of life of the patients that require them. This study will attempt to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of nanocopper particles and an electrical stimulus for the usage in medical device development and the hospital environment.
For devices such as catheters, infections typically result from bacteria entering the body from the outside. This is accomplished by bacteria attaching themselves to the exterior of the device and producing biofilm which allows …

Theses
Deformation of human brain due to acceleration impact has been widely accepted as the direct connection to the Trauma Brain Injury (TBI). However, the limitation of obtaining deformation data of TBI is a major obstacle to understanding TBI mechanism. This experiment mainly focuses on developing a method to measure deformation pattern of brain with blunt injury. First of all, displacement data of markers on sagittal plane of an injury head model was collected using 3D reconstruction software after an impact test. Second, the displacement data was used to calculate 2D Lagrangian strain tensor and the principal strain. The temporal and …
Semi Supervised Weighted Maximum Variance Dimensionality Reduction, Pranitha Surya Andalam
Semi Supervised Weighted Maximum Variance Dimensionality Reduction, Pranitha Surya Andalam
Theses
In the recent years, we have huge amounts of data which we want to classify with minimal human intervention. Only few features from the data that is available might be useful in some scenarios. In those scenarios, the dimensionality reduction methods play a major role for extracting useful features. The two parameter weighted maximum variance (2P-WMV) is a generalized dimensionality reduction method of which principal component analysis (PCA) and maximum margin criterion (MMC) are special cases.. In this paper, we have extended the 2P-WMV approach from our previous work to a semi-supervised version. The objective of this work is specially …

MapReduce comes from a traditional problem solving method: separating a big problem and solving each small parts. With the target of computing larger dataset in more efficient and cheaper way, this is implement into a programming mode to deal with massive quantity of data. The users get a map function and use it to abstract dataset into key / value logical pair and then use a reduce function to group all value with the same key. With this mode, task can be automatic spread the job into clusters grouped by lots of normal computers. MapReduce program can be easily implemented …
Diffusivity Of Drug Actives In Transdermal Drug Delivery (Tdd), Natali R. Gendelberg
Diffusivity Of Drug Actives In Transdermal Drug Delivery (Tdd), Natali R. Gendelberg
Theses
Transdermal Drug Delivery (TDD) through skin patches has many advantages including the following: slow and continuous administration of the therapeutic over long periods of time, timely dosage, accessibility, kinetic maneuverability, elimination of the “First Pass Effect” and negative side effects on the digestive tract. All of the above justify investment into further development of TDD therapies, despite the skin permeability restrictions posed on size and charge by the skin. As skin permeability varies between all individuals based on age, ethnicity and lifestyle, the determination of the proper drug dosages to be contained in the skin patch is highly reliant on …
Response Of Stretch-Injured Schwann Cells, Stephanie Iring
Response Of Stretch-Injured Schwann Cells, Stephanie Iring
Theses
Axon fibers are covered by myelin sheath. After axonal damage, demyelination follows with the production of debris. In the Central Nervous System many studies have been performed to observe and analyze stretch injured axons, but very little has been done to study the white matter axonal tracts, oligodendrocytes. Schwann cells can help take a first look into stretch injured glia cells from the Peripheral nervous system. In order to observe changes in Schwann Cells a stretch injury device is used to produce the effects of severe and moderate injuries. Schwann Cells are stretch injured in both their undifferentiated and differentiated …
Dissolution Kinetics Of Model Api In Molten Polymer Excipients During Batch Processing, Shen Ji
Dissolution Kinetics Of Model Api In Molten Polymer Excipients During Batch Processing, Shen Ji
Theses
In the pharmaceutical industrial application field, hot-melt extrusion (HME) has been recently introduced to develop new solid dosage forms and products. By dissolving the poorly–soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) into water-soluble polymers, the bioavailability of the Class II (with low solubility and high permeability in water) API in Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) could be significantly improved in the body. For readily water-soluble API, HME provides a new approach to produce a controlled release drug system. Hence, pharmaceutical HME is a promising processing method in the pharmaceutical industry.
However, HME has not been widely applied into the pharmaceutical industry. The thermal …
Multisensory Integration In Weakly Electric Fish, Andrea Roeser
Multisensory Integration In Weakly Electric Fish, Andrea Roeser
Theses
Animals integrate information from across sensory systems, such as vision and hearing, to improve perception. To understand how neural circuits in the central nervous system integrate information from different senses, the responses of midbrain neurons to two categories of electrosensory stimuli in Eigenmannia virescens were studied. The first category of stimulus is electrical signals with frequencies below 50 Hz that are encoded in the activity of ampullary receptors. The second category is amplitude modulations of the electric organ discharge, which are encoded by p-type tuberous receptors. Six multisensory neurons were found that responded to both categories of stimuli. However, when …
Koh Etching Of Silicon, Ying Wang
Koh Etching Of Silicon, Ying Wang
Theses
In this research, a series of comparative etching experiments on silicon wafers have been carried out using potassium hydroxide (KOH) for different experimental etching conditions for concentration, temperature and time on (100) orientation p-type silicon wafers. Besides the basic etching conditions, the position of the immersed wafer also has unpredictable effect on the etching process. This may be attributed to the relative contact position between the surface of the immersed wafer and the flow patterns of the stirred etching solution.
The surface morphology analysis indicates that the specific position of the wafer, with respect to the flow of the etchant, …
