Ranking Of Fibre-Reinforced Composite Plate Surface Finish Quality By Wavelet Texture Analysis, S. Palmer, W. Hall, J. Summerscales
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In the automotive and other industries, the visual appearance of external surfaces is a key factor in perceived product quality. Traditionally, the quality of automotive surface finish has been judged by expert human auditors. A set of 17 fibre-reinforced composite plates was previously manufactured to have a range of surface finish quality, and these plates were previously ranked by three expert observers and also optically digitally imaged. Following validation of the previous rankings, we applied the wavelet texture analysis (WTA) technique to the digital photographs to derive an instrumental measure of surface finish quality based on the panel images. The …

1916: Dublin Youths' Sweet Revolution, Marjorie Deleuze
1916: Dublin Youths' Sweet Revolution, Marjorie Deleuze
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper examines the children of the slums of Dublin in 1916 for whom a sweet treat was a very rare occurrence. The shop looting that happened during the Easter Insurrection of 1916 gives an interesting insight into the children's priorities at the time. Anecdotal though the accounts of the looting may be, they shed some light on both the children's perception of the event and the beginning of a new era of sweet food consumption. Whilst adults were busy fighting for a free Ireland, a bunch of children were having their own revolution, a taste buds revolution.
Purification, Optimization, And Growth Of New Delhi Metallo-Β-Lactamase-1 Protein Crystals Mixed With Nz218 Inhibitor, Brandon M. Wills
Purification, Optimization, And Growth Of New Delhi Metallo-Β-Lactamase-1 Protein Crystals Mixed With Nz218 Inhibitor, Brandon M. Wills
Celebration of Learning
New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 is a problematic gene found in certain strains of bacteria that cause them to become antibiotic resistant to nearly all known antibiotics. While some antibiotics are available to treat patients with a bacterial infection, most are toxic or do not have 100% success rates. With that being said, it is imperative that we search for a molecule that is successfully able to inhibit the effects of this gene every time. Such a discovery would help tremendously with new antibiotic drug development and also prevent further damage by these dangerous bacteria. In this presentation, I will describe the …
The Sous Vide Revolution: Coming Full Circle And Beyond, Ulrich Hoeche
The Sous Vide Revolution: Coming Full Circle And Beyond, Ulrich Hoeche
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
For the purpose of this research, academic material and online sources were utilised to clarify the meaning of the key term sous vide.
The Sous Vide Advisory Committee (1991) says ‘Sous Vide (also known as Cuisine en Papillote) is an interrupted catering system in which raw or par-cooked food is sealed into a vacuumised laminated plastic pouch or container, heat treated by controlled cooking, rapidly cooled and then reheated for service after a period of chilled storage’. According to Herbst (1995), the term ‘refers to a cooking method of French origin and directly translates into “under vacuum”’. In the words …
A Family Right To Care: Charting The Legal Obstacles, Gerard W. Wallace Esq.
A Family Right To Care: Charting The Legal Obstacles, Gerard W. Wallace Esq.
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Numerous state and federal laws govern kinship (non-parental/relative) care of children. Federal laws are mainly concerned with assistance to families and with child welfare. State laws implement federal law and provide more governance in these areas and also almost exclusively govern family custodial issues. Yet, together both federal or state bodies of law do not comprehensively address the range of legal issues that burden kinship families. States and federal laws still need to enact laws and regulations that provide more legal rights and assistance that will empower kinship families to successfully care for children.
In this legal brief, we attempt …
Recognizing Microaggressions: A Framework For Helping Grandfamilies, Loriena Yancura, Christine A. Fruhauf, Heather Greenwood-Junkermeier
Recognizing Microaggressions: A Framework For Helping Grandfamilies, Loriena Yancura, Christine A. Fruhauf, Heather Greenwood-Junkermeier
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Microaggressions are manifestations of prejudice targeted toward socially marginalized groups. They may take several forms: subtle discriminatory remarks, behavior, or environmental characteristics. In contrast to overt aggressions, microagressions are not easy to detect and often invisible to both perpetrator and recipient. Existing research demonstrates that experiencing microaggressions is harmful to members of stigmatized groups and provides a framework to combat these negative effects. Although most of the literature on microaggressions is focused on groups characterized by minority race and female gender, microagressions might also be experienced by members of grandfamilies, who often have socially marginalized status. Microagressions toward grandfamilies may …
Intersections Of Poverty, Geography, And Custodial Grandparent Caregiving In Appalachia, Deborah L. Phillips, Ben Alexander-Eitzman
Intersections Of Poverty, Geography, And Custodial Grandparent Caregiving In Appalachia, Deborah L. Phillips, Ben Alexander-Eitzman
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of custodial grandparenting in Central Appalachia to other areas in Appalachia and the rest of the U.S., to explore how recent economic changes have affected poverty rates of custodial grandparents in all of these areas, and to explore what influences the probability of custodial grandparenting. We hypothesize that the recent economic upheaval of the Great Recession has pressured many families to rely on grandparents to provide care for their grandchildren and that these trends are particularly evident in the Appalachian region due to longstanding historical trends and unique cultural factors. …

The Effects Of Urbanization On Leaf Breakdown Rates In A Rock Island Watershed, Jillian M. Jespersen, Laura Becker, Kortney Hix, C. Kevin Geedey
The Effects Of Urbanization On Leaf Breakdown Rates In A Rock Island Watershed, Jillian M. Jespersen, Laura Becker, Kortney Hix, C. Kevin Geedey
Celebration of Learning
The ability of streams to break down leaves is widely used as an indicator of stream health. In this study, a series of six streams within the Rock Island, Ill., watershed, which were similar in discharge, order, temperature and pH, were categorized as healthy or unhealthy based on chloride levels. This study was part of a broader study of the Rock Island watershed by Augustana. Maple leaves were collected shortly after abscission, weighed, packaged in mesh bags (approximately 5g per bag) and deployed in the streams for two- and four-week periods. After each time period, the leaves were removed, dried …

A variety of microporous hydrophobic flat sheet membranes of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) are studied to evaluate the influence of membrane properties on their performance in desalination by direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) processes. The membrane thickness is varied between 23 μm to 125 μm; the pore size is varied from 0.05 μm to 0.45 μm. The porosity is generally high in the range of 0.7 - 0.8. DCMD experiments are performed over a hot brine temperature range of 65 °C to 85 °C and distillate temperature at 25 °C for various brine …
Studies On Purification And Functionalization Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Aqueous Phase Behavior, Zheqiong Wu
Studies On Purification And Functionalization Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Aqueous Phase Behavior, Zheqiong Wu
Dissertations
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are known to have unique mechanical, thermal and electrical properties which make them attractive for a wide range of applications ranging from batteries to sensors. CNTs are rolled up graphene sheets where the single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) are classified according to the number of concentric rings. In this dissertation, the focus is on several different aspects of MWCNTs. These include purification, functionalization and colloidal behavior.
MWCNTs are insoluble in solvents and therefore some degree of functionalization is required prior to their real-world applications. Oxidation debris is generated during carboxylation which is usually the first …
A Novel Approach To User Controlled Ambulation Of Lower Extremity Exoskeletons Using Admittance Control Paradigm, Kiran Kartika Karunakaran
A Novel Approach To User Controlled Ambulation Of Lower Extremity Exoskeletons Using Admittance Control Paradigm, Kiran Kartika Karunakaran
Dissertations
The robotic lower extremity exoskeletons address the ambulatory problems confronting individuals with paraplegia. Paraplegia due to spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause motor deficit to the lower extremities leading to inability to walk. Though wheelchairs provide mobility to the user, they do not provide support to all activities of everyday living to individuals with paraplegia.
Current research is addressing the issue of ambulation through the use of wearable exoskeletons that are pre-programmed. There are currently four exoskeletons in the U.S. market: Ekso, Rewalk, REX and Indego. All of the currently available exoskeletons have 2 active Degrees of Freedom (DOF) except …
Just Meat: Chicken-Pain, Intergenerational Justice, And The American Diet, Stephen Scales
Just Meat: Chicken-Pain, Intergenerational Justice, And The American Diet, Stephen Scales
Between the Species
Peter Singer’s arguments against the morality of the typical American diet focus on the pain of animals, and lead to the conclusion that we must become committed vegans. His approach ignores the impact that different psychological capacities can legitimately have on our moral appraisal of the interests of beings. Although we ought to eat less meat because of the externalized environmental costs that factory farming inflicts upon future people, an ideal diet may contain some environmentally sustainably raised meat. Finally, the perception of ethical puritanism in committed vegans may be an obstacle to achieving the real reductions in animal suffering …

Sage Grouse Groceries: Forb Response To Piñon-Juniper Treatments, Jonathan D. Bates, Kirk W. Davies, April Hulet, Richard F. Miller, Bruce Roundy
Articles
Juniper and piñon coniferous woodlands have increased 2- to 10-fold in nine ecoregions spanning the Intermountain Region of the western United States. Control of piñon-juniper woodlands by mechanical treatments and prescribed fire are commonly applied to recover sagebrush steppe rangelands. Recently, the Sage Grouse Initiative has made conifer removal a major part of its program to reestablish sagebrush habitat for sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and other species. We analyzed data sets from previous and ongoing studies across the Great Basin characterizing cover response of perennial and annual forbs that are consumed by sage grouse to mechanical, prescribed fire, …

Current Status Of Marker Genes Of Bacteroides And Related Taxa For Identifying Sewage Pollution In Environmental Waters, Warish Ahmed, Bridie Hughes, Valerie J. Harwood
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Microbial source tracking (MST) endeavors to determine sources of fecal pollution in environmental waters by capitalizing on the association of certain microorganisms with the gastrointestinal tract and feces of specific animal groups. Several decades of research have shown that bacteria belonging to the gut-associated order Bacteroidales, and particularly the genus Bacteroides, tend to co-evolve with the host, and are, therefore, particularly suitable candidates for MST applications. This review summarizes the current research on MST methods that employ genes belonging to Bacteroidales/Bacteroides as tracers or “markers” of sewage pollution, including known advantages and deficiencies of the many polymerase chain …

The Benefits Of Multicultural Eclectic Service Delivery, Eugena Griffin
The Benefits Of Multicultural Eclectic Service Delivery, Eugena Griffin
Publications and Research
To date, Blacks in America are often misdiagnosed or mistreated due to the failure of mental health practitioners to provide services from a multicultural eclectic purview. It is necessary to attend to the past and present influences of psychosocial variables related to real and perceived discrimination on minority achievement, behavior, and clinically health outcomes. When providers do not take into consideration these factors, they have a limited conceptualization of their clients’ needs. Such psychosocial variables can exacerbate behaviors, symptoms, and at times be the antecedent that onset those symptoms. Thus, it is imperative that health providers learn methods to investigate …
Effectiveness Of Water Quality Benefits Provided By Stormwater Management Facilities/Infiltration Basin, Vinicius Rodrigues De Mattos Barreto
Effectiveness Of Water Quality Benefits Provided By Stormwater Management Facilities/Infiltration Basin, Vinicius Rodrigues De Mattos Barreto
Theses
Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) and devices are systems frequently built under assumed design performances, but rarely verified after construction. Their effectiveness in protecting the environment against pollutants carried by stormwater runoff has been extensively questioned and investigated. This research presents a case study of an infiltration basin in Medford, NJ to verify if the 80% expected Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal as stated in the New Jersey Stormwater BMP Manual is actually achieved. A sampling pit was installed on the site and infiltrated water samples were collected during three rain events and TSS measurements were compared with the inflow. …

Analysis Of Gompertzian Growth In Aggregating Multicellular Tumor Nodules, Gwendolyn A. Deger
Analysis Of Gompertzian Growth In Aggregating Multicellular Tumor Nodules, Gwendolyn A. Deger
Graduate Masters Theses
Past studies have shown that tumor growth generally follows an exponential growth function or, with a limiting growth constraint, the sigmoid Gompertzian function, where a terminal tumor size is reached at late times. The classical Gompertzian description of tumor growth applies in the case of two-dimensional (2D) in vitro cell studies due to the effect of physical limitations on possible growth area. This project asked whether Gompertzian form applies to the in vitro growth of multifocal 3D tumor nodules, whose size is determined by aggregation events as well as cell proliferation. Previous reports have indicated that these three-dimensional (3D) spheroids …
The Influences Of Different Socioeconomic Scenarios In Bioinformatics And Biotechnology Research: The Ethical Issues Arising From Technological Advances, Marcia Miki Sato
The Influences Of Different Socioeconomic Scenarios In Bioinformatics And Biotechnology Research: The Ethical Issues Arising From Technological Advances, Marcia Miki Sato
Theses
In the last couple decades, we could see the combination of technology and biology taking large steps in science. As new fields, bioinformatics and biotechnology also led to important discussions between excited scientists and social thinkers. The divergent opinions argue about the amazing possibilities of human advances and the social issues that follow the progress. This paper discusses ethical matters of new developments and compares policy choices with respect to research and use of biotechnology and bioinformatics in different countries. Even though the world is increasingly globalized, the comparisons suggest that different cultures have different ethical responses and public policies …

Melanocortin 1 Receptor: Structure, Function, And Regulation, Erin M. Wolf Horrell, Mary C. Boulanger, John A. D'Orazio
Physiology Faculty Publications
The melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) is a melanocytic Gs protein coupled receptor that regulates skin pigmentation, UV responses, and melanoma risk. It is a highly polymorphic gene, and loss of function correlates with a fair, UV-sensitive, and melanoma-prone phenotype due to defective epidermal melanization and sub-optimal DNA repair. MC1R signaling, achieved through adenylyl cyclase activation and generation of the second messenger cAMP, is hormonally controlled by the positive agonist melanocortin, the negative agonist agouti signaling protein, and the neutral antagonist β-defensin 3. Activation of cAMP signaling up-regulates melanin production and deposition in the epidermis which functions to limit UV …

A Data Science Approach To Pattern Discovery In Complex Structures With Applications In Bioinformatics, Lei Hua
Dissertations
Pattern discovery aims to find interesting, non-trivial, implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful patterns in data. This dissertation presents a data science approach for discovering patterns or motifs from complex structures, particularly complex RNA structures. RNA secondary and tertiary structure motifs are very important in biological molecules, which play multiple vital roles in cells. A lot of work has been done on RNA motif annotation. However, pattern discovery in RNA structure is less studied. In the first part of this dissertation, an ab initio algorithm, named DiscoverR, is introduced for pattern discovery in RNA secondary structures. This algorithm works by …
