Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian
Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
Previous research has found racial background is a significant factor for the perception of police. However, there is little research done on the impact of the race of the police officer on the perceptions of police. This study examined the impact of racial influences on the perception of police. To study this, we used vignettes of a violent police citizen encounter, in which the officer's use of force was justified, unjustified, or ambiguous. Participants were randomly assigned to instructions, in which the police officer was identified as White or African American. Through self-report surveys, participants rated their perception of the …

Police Academy Recruits’ Academic Performance Predicted By Initial Education Obtainment Level, Donald Doutt
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
This study made a statistical analysis of test scores, on three select written knowledge based tests given in the six Georgia Regional Police Academies, to detect significant influence from the prior formal educational obtainment levels of the police recruits. Two 10 week training cycles, provided 20 Graduating Classes with =22.4 recruits. The purpose is to examine the validity of commonly assumed educational performance predictors, specifically college education, in determining a student’s likely success in a supplemental specialized training program. Prior Police training was also considered in a correlation analysis of exam scores. A Motivation Index was established to assess an …

The Use Of Specialized Cybercrime Policing Units: An Organizational Analysis, Dale Willits, Jeffrey Nowacki
The Use Of Specialized Cybercrime Policing Units: An Organizational Analysis, Dale Willits, Jeffrey Nowacki
Articles
Given the increased focus and importance of cybercrime, some police agencies have turned to the use of specialized cybercrime policing units. Research has yet to examine the how frequently these units are used in policing, nor has research examined the types of agencies most likely to use these units. The current research, drawing on contingency theory, institutional theory, and Maguire’s theory of police organizational structure, uses four waves of Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Survey data to provide a descriptive analysis of specialized cybercrime units with a focus on identifying organizational correlates, environmental pressures, and the role of time. Trend …

The Second Dimension Of The Supreme Court, Joshua B. Fischman, Tonja Jacobi
The Second Dimension Of The Supreme Court, Joshua B. Fischman, Tonja Jacobi
William & Mary Law Review
Describing the Justices of the Supreme Court as liberals and conservatives has become so standard and the left-right division on the Court is considered so entrenched that any deviation from that pattern is treated with surprise. Attentive Court watchers know that the Justices are not just politicians in robes, deciding each case on a purely ideological basis. Yet the increasingly influential empirical legal studies literature assumes just that that a left-right ideological dimension fully describes the Supreme Court. We show that there is a second, more legally-focused dimension of judicial decision making. A continuum between legalism and pragmatism also divides …

Comparative Error-Free And Error-Prone Translesion Synthesis Of N2‑2′-Deoxyguanosine Adducts Formed By Mitomycin C And Its Metabolite, 2,7-Diaminomitosene, In Human Cells, Arindam Bose, Chaitra Surugihalli, Paritosh Pande, Elise Champeil, Ashis K. Basu
Publications and Research
Mitomycin C (MC) is a cytotoxic and mutagenic antitumor agent that alkylates DNA upon reductive activation. 2,7-Diaminomitosene (2,7-DAM) is a major metabolite of MC in tumor cells, which also alkylates DNA. MC forms seven DNA adducts, including monoadducts and inter- and intrastrand cross-links, whereas 2,7-DAM forms two monoadducts. Herein, the biological effects of the dG-N2 adducts formed by MC and 2,7-DAM have been compared by constructing single-stranded plasmids containing these adducts and replicating them in human embryonic kidney 293T cells. Translesion synthesis (TLS) efficiencies of dG-N2-MC and dG-N2-2,7-DAM were 38 ± 3 and 27 …
Building Students’ Civic And Moral Responsibility And Assessing Outcomes Through Service Learning, Lori Moog
Building Students’ Civic And Moral Responsibility And Assessing Outcomes Through Service Learning, Lori Moog
Gulf South Summit on Service-Learning (Archived)
Colleges and Universities have great potential to make a positive difference in meeting community needs and addressing complex social and economic problems through service learning because it is a distinct program from other campus-community partnerships due to its deliberate intent to work collaboratively through service that is linked to course work. Developing service learning programs that engage students in meeting community needs also helps students meet their own educational goals. Integrating service and academic study optimizes resources for the community. Because of these mutually beneficial goals, service learning fits into higher education’s mission of service to the community. Moreover, in …

A Spatial Analysis Of Non-Emergency Requests For Service & Violent Crime In St. Louis, Missouri, Alysson Leigh Gatens
A Spatial Analysis Of Non-Emergency Requests For Service & Violent Crime In St. Louis, Missouri, Alysson Leigh Gatens
Theses
The “Broken Windows” thesis posits that disorderly conditions are likely to incite a downward spiral in an area, eventually leading to crime. In contrast, collective efficacy theorists argue that crime and disorder are manifestations of the same underlying issue; as such, disorder could be construed as an opportunity for citizens to mobilize against a problem in their neighborhood. This research employs longitudinal administrative data regarding requests for non-emergency services (“311” calls). Prior research has examined this measure as an indicator of disorder; however, these requests are representative of citizen action against disorder, and thus may better represent a form of …

Pay-For-Performance In Prison: Using Healthcare Economics To Improve Criminal Justice, W. David Ball
Pay-For-Performance In Prison: Using Healthcare Economics To Improve Criminal Justice, W. David Ball
Faculty Publications
For much of the last seventy-plus years, healthcare providers in the United States have been paid under the fee-for-service system, where providers are reimbursed for procedures performed, not outcomes obtained. Providers, insurers, and consumers are motivated by different individual and organizational incentives; costs and burdens of patient care are shifted from one part of the system to another. The result has been a system that combines exploding costs without concomitant increases in quality. Healthcare economists and policymakers have reacted by proposing a number of policies designed to reign in costs without sacrificing quality. One approach is to focus on the …

Undergraduate Perceptions Ofinterpersonal Violence, Joshua Mcdowell, Madison Bainter, Abigail Hammeke
Undergraduate Perceptions Ofinterpersonal Violence, Joshua Mcdowell, Madison Bainter, Abigail Hammeke
Kansas Undergraduate Research Day
Interpersonal violence is an issue facing all college campuses, including those in Kansas. Some studies indicate that more than a quarter of surveyed college students admit to having perpetrated actions construed as sexually violent in nature. Title IX of the Education Amendments Act requires schools to respond to issues of sexual violence. This approach, while important, reacts to incidents that have already occurred rather than preventing violence. One possible reason for the rampant existence of sexual violence on campuses is that many behaviors are not identified as violent, even by those on the receiving end. This study presents findings from …

The State Courts And Alaska Politics: Independence, Public Accountability, And Political Influence, Michael L. Boyer
The State Courts And Alaska Politics: Independence, Public Accountability, And Political Influence, Michael L. Boyer
Faculty, Staff, and Students
From the chapter introduction: "How does the Alaska political and governmental process deal with the tension between the need for judicial independence, public accountability, and the court system’s role in politics and public policy making? The following two sections explore the influences that have shaped the Alaska court system and its organization. The next section explains the devices that work to promote independence and impartiality. Then we explore in more detail six aspects of the role of the courts in Alaska politics and policy making.
