Screening And Stigma: Lack Of Male Representation In Childhood Sexual Abuse Research And Literature, Dylan Preston Apr 2016

Screening And Stigma: Lack Of Male Representation In Childhood Sexual Abuse Research And Literature, Dylan Preston

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore available screening tools for assessing male childhood sexual abuse. This form of abuse is a problem that is often underreported. Males disclose less often than females because of the stigma associated with being a sexual abuse victim and questioning their own sexual orientation. Nine different screening instruments from child welfare, medical, and clinical settings were analyzed and prevention efforts within public schools are also discussed. There is a lack of literature specific to male sexual abuse victims, and what is available is severely outdated. This study is a thorough literature review of …

Less Lethal Weapons: An Effectiveness Analysis, Timothy R. Kjellman Apr 2016

Less Lethal Weapons: An Effectiveness Analysis, Timothy R. Kjellman

Senior Honors Theses

Less-lethal weapons have been effective at saving lives by providing police an option for defense or apprehension that does not involve a firearm. However, not all less-lethal weapons are created equal, and careful planning with a solid base of research must be done to insure that officers are prepared for every circumstance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current information about less-lethal weapons and create a comprehensive breakdown of their strengths and weaknesses. This will include current statistics on the most common less-lethal weapons, as well as insight from scholarly sources. The strengths and weaknesses of a …

Body-Worn Cameras And Civilian Policy Oversight: A Camden Case Study (Presentation Slides From Nacole Symposium 2016 Held At John Jay College), Maria Ponomarenko, Barry Friedmann

Publications and Research

Throughout its Final Report, the Presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing repeatedly called for a new form of civilian oversight: for police departments to involve community members in the process of developing and reviewing department policies on a variety of topics from use of new technologies to police training. The Task Force stressed that this sort of engagement is essential to promoting external legitimacy and building trust between policing agencies and the communities they serve. Yet as a number of police officials have acknowledged, community engagement around matters of policy raises a number of difficult questions—and there are few …

Early Warning/Intervention Systems (Presentation Slides From Nacole Symposium 2016 Held At John Jay College), Jennifer Helsby, Samuel Carton, Kenneth Joseph, Ayesha Mahmud, Youngsoo Park, Joe Walsh, Lauren Haynes

Publications and Research

Adverse interactions between police and the public harm police legitimacy and produce high costs due to harms to both officers and the public as well as litigation. Early intervention systems (EIS) that flag officers considered most likely to be involved in one of these adverse situations are an important tool for police supervision and for targeting of interventions such as counseling or training. However, the EIS that exist are often not data-driven and are based on supervior intuition. We have developed a prototype data-driven EIS that uses a diverse set of data sources from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and machine …

Constitutional Utopianism, Susan N. Herman Apr 2016

Constitutional Utopianism, Susan N. Herman

UTOPIA500

The sixth and final UTOPIA500 presentation was April 21, 2016. Professor Susan Herman, Centennial Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School and President of the American Civil Liberties Union, received the official "Me and Tommy More" polo shirt from Dr. Michael P. Malloy, organizer of the UTOPIA500 project. Professor Herman delivered a presentation on Constitutional Utopianism. She explored the literary devices that More employed as narrative strategies in Utopia, and argued that his intention may have been to give focus to discussion about important issues of governance and societal structures, rather than to provide definitive answers. Professor Herman also compared …

Erasing The Mark Of A Criminal Past: Ex-Offenders’ Expectations And Experiences With Record Clearance, Ericka Adams, Elsa Y. Chen, Rosella Chapman Apr 2016

Erasing The Mark Of A Criminal Past: Ex-Offenders’ Expectations And Experiences With Record Clearance, Ericka Adams, Elsa Y. Chen, Rosella Chapman

Political Science

Through the process of record clearance, individuals can have certain minor convictions removed from their criminal records or designated as expunged. This study analyzes data gathered from semi-structured interviews with 40 persons with past criminal convictions to examine the expectations of individuals who seek record clearance and the extent to which completion of the process facilitates efforts to reintegrate into society and desist from crime. The analysis finds that record clearance benefits exoffenders through external effects, such as the reduction of barriers to employment, and internal processes, such as the facilitation of cognitive transformation and the affirmation of a new …

An Analysis Of Elementary Interventions On Academic And Behavioral Performance, Sarah Mclean Apr 2016

An Analysis Of Elementary Interventions On Academic And Behavioral Performance, Sarah Mclean

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Communities In Schools (CIS) model promotes individualized one-on-one interventions for at-risk students assessed for needs in the areas of academics, behavior, and/or attendance. While previous research has linked the CIS program to higher graduation rates and lower dropout rates in secondary grades, little research has been done to examine the impact of the CIS program on elementary students. Using data from student records of at-risk elementary students receiving CIS services and those at-risk elementary students on a campus without the CIS program, this study examined the effect of the CIS services on student absences, behavior incidents, citizenship, and academic …

Do Law Enforcement Review Boards Affect Perceptions Of Trust And Efficacy In Government?, Brooke Shannon Apr 2016

Do Law Enforcement Review Boards Affect Perceptions Of Trust And Efficacy In Government?, Brooke Shannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Can institutional reforms increase trust? Law enforcement is a government institution that people interact with regularly, especially their local police departments. In communities that experience officer-involved shootings of civilians, trust in the police is low. In an effort to increase trust, advocates often propose law enforcement review boards that can independently investigate complaints against officers and make recommendations to law enforcement agencies to improve relations with the public. To determine whether review boards truly repair trust, I conduct interviews with activists in four cities across the US, and field a 230+ respondent survey experiment to assess the effects of review …

Identifying Terrorist Affiliations Through Social Network Analysis Using Data Mining Techniques, Govand A. Ali Apr 2016

Identifying Terrorist Affiliations Through Social Network Analysis Using Data Mining Techniques, Govand A. Ali

Information Technology Master Theses

In a technologically enabled world, local ideologically inspired warfare becomes global all too quickly, specifically terrorist groups like Al Quaeda and ISIS (Daesh) have successfully used modern computing technology and social networking environments to broadcast their message, recruit new members, and plot attacks. This is especially true for such platforms as Twitter and encrypted mobile apps like Telegram or the clandestine Alrawi. As early detection of such activity is crucial to attack prevention data mining techniques have become increasingly important in the fight against the spread of global terrorist activity. This study employs data mining tools to mine Twitter for …
