Women's Summit Presented by Bryant University
Welcome! Kristin Chenoweth’s song “I was here” speaks volumes when it comes to our theme for the 2016 Women’s Summit – Make Your Mark! The words struck a chord with me, especially, “You will notice me. I’ll be leaving my mark like initials carved in an old oak tree. Just wait and see. I want to do something that matters, say something different, something that sets the whole world on its ear.”
Last year, our opening keynote speaker, Sallie Krawcheck, told us that women want to engage in work that allows them to find meaning and purpose in their professional …

Growing domestic energy development—the extraction of fuels and construction of electricity generation facilities—poses new challenges to a country accustomed to importing much of its energy. As has always been the case, fuel in the form of oil, gas, sunlight, wind, water, or other energy sources must be extracted wherever it happens to be found. Compounding this challenge is the fact that some of our most abundant remaining energy sources exist in low concentrations and are widely distributed. As we tap these sources in ever more numerous locations, energy development bumps up against certain human population centers. The City of Fort …

Terrorism, under federal law, generally means an act of politically- or socially-motivated violence perpetrated against innocents. Terrorism within the meaning of federal law, in other words, exists only if a cognizable motive is uncovered. This definition also sees the United States as an undifferentiated landscape—by its own terms, it fails to take into account any geographic nuance in acts of mass violence. This Article suggests that spatial considerations are relevant in determining whether an act of mass violence constitutes an act of terrorism for purposes of federal law. It points to cities—which are characterized by a highly concentrated, fluid population, …

We have become a surveillance state. Cameras—both those controlled by the state, and those installed by private entities—watch our every move, at least in public. For the most part, courts have deemed this public surveillance to be beyond the purview of the Fourth Amendment, meaning that it goes largely unregulated—a cause for alarm for many civil libertarians. This Article challenges these views and suggests that we must listen to communities in thinking about cameras and other surveillance technologies. For many communities, public surveillance not only has the benefit of deterring crime and aiding in the apprehension of criminals. It can …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 24, 2015:
This symposium seeks to explore the interface between professional regulation, governance and competence to practise, particularly in relation to performance of competence, and to identify whether public safety can be assured through performance of competence (perhaps something of a holy grail), or awareness of competence, or indeed incompetence. Previous research has identified that the three common indicators of competence agreed by nurses and regulators alike are Continuing Professional Development (CPD), hours of practice and self-assessment against the competencies. However if these three indicators were a guarantee of competence, then arguably no-one would present …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015:
Purpose: The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive, and correlational research design was to investigate the relationship between self-esteem, locus of control, and first-time pass on NCLEX-RN of nursing students graduating in the classes of 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 enrolled in baccalaureate programs at two HBCUs in the southeastern region of the United States.
Methods: The study used a quantitative descriptive correlational design to investigate the relationship between self-esteem, locus of control, and first-time pass on NCLEX-RN among nursing students graduating in the classes of 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 enrolled in baccalaureate programs at two HBCUs …

The Role Of The Institution On The Adoption Of Law Enforcement Technology, Cassandra Dodge
The Role Of The Institution On The Adoption Of Law Enforcement Technology, Cassandra Dodge
Theses and Dissertations
While law enforcement agencies perceive that technology increases their ability to complete their mission in the most efficient manner possible, this may not be the case in reality. Considering the potential expenses, potential danger, and lack of proven efficiency, it is surprising that these technologies are continuing to be adopted. Observing law enforcement agencies through the lens of institutional theory provides an explanation for the discrepancy between what would be expected and what has actually occurred. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the use of five technologies (records management systems, broadband networking with vehicle computers, long range …
Terrorism Preparedness: A Law Enforcement Perspective, Cayla Comens
Terrorism Preparedness: A Law Enforcement Perspective, Cayla Comens
Theses and Dissertations
Since September 11, 2001, the environments in which law enforcement agencies operate have been changing. Contingency theory hypothesizes that an organization adapts to their environment through organizational structure and contingencies in order to accomplish a state of fit or higher performance. Utilizing the contingency theory framework, the study looked to answer two research questions: (1) Do municipal and county police agencies believe they have the necessary resources and training to prevent and or respond to the next terrorist attack? (2) How does agency size, structure, funding, and perceived risk influence terrorism preparedness? A sample of 902 county and municipal law …
