Framework For Evaluating The Readiness Of Cyber First Responders Responsible For Critical Infrastructure Protection, Jungsang Yoon Mar 2016

Framework For Evaluating The Readiness Of Cyber First Responders Responsible For Critical Infrastructure Protection, Jungsang Yoon

Theses and Dissertations

First responders go through rigorous training and evaluation to ensure they are adequately prepared for an emergency. As an example, firefighters continually evaluate the readiness of their personnel using a defined set of criteria to measure performance for fire suppression and rescue procedures. From a cyber security standpoint, however, this same set of criteria and rigor is severely lacking for the professionals that must detect, respond to and recover from a cyber-based attack against the nation's critical infrastructure. This research provides a framework for evaluating the readiness of cyber first responders responsible for critical infrastructure protection. The framework demonstrates the …

A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim Mar 2016

A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, industrial and terrorist use of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) materials pose a risk to public safety. During the initial phase of typical CBRN incidents, emergency responders establish hazard zones based on standard distances from published guidelines and recommendations. This research investigates how standard hazard zones change in a real world environment that accounts for physical boundaries. Using a python simulation in ArcGIS®, new hazard zones were created by expanding standard hazard zones to follow nearby roads, railroads, and rivers. The new and standard zones were compared by calculating the population and area affected by …

The Effect Of Ph And Pulsed Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diode Duty Cycles On The First Order Rate Constant And Byproduct Profile Of The Advanced Oxidation Of Tartrazine, Brandon M. Stewart Mar 2016

The Effect Of Ph And Pulsed Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diode Duty Cycles On The First Order Rate Constant And Byproduct Profile Of The Advanced Oxidation Of Tartrazine, Brandon M. Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Water treatment capability is required for military operations, production of drinking water, and industrial wastewater treatment. The Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) is one of many viable steps for treating water; however, it is important to understand the byproducts of the treatment process to avoid creating other constituents more severe than the first. Tartrazine (TAR) was oxidized with pulsed Ultra- Violet (UV) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in combination with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in an AOP at the laboratory scale. The relative concentration of TAR was reduced from 1 to between 1 – 0.75 over pH values between 6 and 9, and …

Real-Time Probe Data Dashboard For Monitoring Detour Route During I-65 N Road Closure, Margaret Mcnamara, Howell Li, Stephen Remias, Lucy Richardson, Deborah Horton, Ed Cox, Darcy M. Bullock

Purdue Road School

On August 7, 2015, a 37 mile stretch of I-65 N from MM 141 to 178 was closed due to a structural evaluation of a bridge. Traffic was detoured onto US-52, SR-26, and US-231 before returning to the highway. In order to monitor delay and congestion on the detour route, a real-time dashboard was implemented in the style of the interstate Traffic Ticker. Throughout the detour, this website was used to monitor congestion in real time and measure the impact of mitigation actions. The improvement in travel can be seen from the addition of temporary signals, retiming of the US-231 …

Sharing The Road: Smart Transportation Infrastructure, Dorothy J. Glancy

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Smart cities require smart transportation. Advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems provide ever-smarter transportation infrastructure for the United States and countries around the world. Among the most advance forms of ground transportation infrastructure is a group of technologies that connect vehicles invisibly to other vehicles through information exchanges. These advanced transportation technologies are of two types: On the one hand, Connected Vehicle Safety Systems use vehicle-to-vehicle dedicated short range communications technologies. On the other hand, Connected Vehicle Mobility Applicatoins use a muhc wider variety of mobile wireless technologies. These two types of technolofies that connect vehicles will increasingly make existing physical infrastructure …

Engaging The Lived Realities Of Adult Immigrant English Language Learners: A Case Study Of Literacy For Consciousness, Todd Eckel Mar 2016

Engaging The Lived Realities Of Adult Immigrant English Language Learners: A Case Study Of Literacy For Consciousness, Todd Eckel

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study had two goals. The first goal was to understand how a critical, non-formal, adult literacy program addresses the challenges and successes, which the students and volunteers identify at Amanecer Adult School. The second goal was to explore the perception of the student Spanish-speaking immigrants on the extent to which this program contributes to their second language acquisition and critical citizenship. These goals were examined through studying a local nonprofit organization, Amanecer Adult School, (AAS) that espouses critical literacy as its main goal. Using qualitative methodology and an inductive analysis approach to the data, the findings of the …

Fostering Peace: The Impact Of A Nonprofit Community-Based Organization On Young Foster Youths’ Social-Emotional Development And Pre-Academic Skills, Carrie Alpert Mar 2016

Fostering Peace: The Impact Of A Nonprofit Community-Based Organization On Young Foster Youths’ Social-Emotional Development And Pre-Academic Skills, Carrie Alpert

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, approximately 400,000 children reside in foster care, and most have been exposed to caregiver abuse, neglect, or abandonment. A majority of foster children suffer the effects of damaging circumstances including poverty, violence, inferior health care, and substandard housing. Consequently, young foster youth frequently struggle to accomplish developmental tasks such as establishing secure attachment relationships, cultivating preacademic skills, and acquiring social-emotional competence. The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of Peace4Kids, a nonprofit community-based organization, on young foster youths’ social-emotional development and pre-academic skills. Data collected from parents, teachers, and administrators during semi-structured interviews …
