Innovation In The Local Administration System In Egypt, Mustafa Adel Abdulrahman
Innovation In The Local Administration System In Egypt, Mustafa Adel Abdulrahman
Theses and Dissertations
The Egyptian public sector always described as a highly centralized system, with an inflexible hierarchical structure and high levels of formal relationships channeling its communications through public enterprises and institutions. Even establishing the local administration system as an approach of decentralization, it still highly connected and governed by the central government. On the other hand, innovation in public sector studies and application in last two decades gained much interest from scholars, practitioners and even leaders and policy makers as an approach to enhance public sector efficiency and effectiveness. Accordingly, this study aims to explore innovation in the public sector in …

Reputation And Status: Expanding The Role Of Social Evaluations In Management Research: From The Editors, Gerard George, Linus Dahlander, Scott D. Graffin, Samantha Sim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Organizations, whether private or public, are subject to evaluations by their stakeholder community and society. These social evaluations form the basis of perceptions targeted at the organization, and influence the organization’s interactions with its stakeholders. “Reputation,” defined as beliefs or perceptions held about the quality of a focal actor, and “status,” defined as relative professional position or social standing, are both forms of social evaluation. Following works by Fombrun and Shanley (1990) and Merton (1968), reputation and status as theoretical constructs have become popularized in the literature, and management scholars have provided empirical evidence to provide a more complete view …

Applying Coaching Strategies To Support Youth- And Family-Focused Extension Programming, Jonathan R. Olson, Kyle R. Hawkey, Burgess Smith, Daniel F. Perkins, Lynne M. Borden
Journal of Extension
In this article, we describe how a peer-coaching model has been applied to support community-based Extension programming through the Children, Youth, and Families at Risk (CYFAR) initiative. We describe the general approaches to coaching that have been used to help with CYFAR program implementation, evaluation, and sustainability efforts; we discuss strategies coaches use to maintain effective relationships with CYFAR stakeholders; and we review common characteristics of effective coaches. Finally, we discuss implications that coaching strategies might have for Extension programming in general and present future directions for research and practice related to peer coaching.

Professional Development Data: A Review Of Action Research And Data Analysis And Its Implications For Special Education, Jennifer Lee Suppo
Journal of Research Initiatives
In today’s world of accountability and budgeting constraints, schools are examining how they get the most “bang for their buck” in the area of professional development experiences. Professional development has traditionally been used to keep teachers and administrators abreast of current teaching strategies. In using the traditional model of professional development, typically the school or district would have a speaker, who was knowledgeable on a random topic of education, come in and conduct a one-day seminar. More often than not, there was little accountability to this traditional model; little if any data was taken to see if the knowledge obtained …
¿Es Su Escuela Nuestra Escuela? Latino Access To Catholic Schools, Father Joseph V. Corpora, Luis R. Fraga
¿Es Su Escuela Nuestra Escuela? Latino Access To Catholic Schools, Father Joseph V. Corpora, Luis R. Fraga
Journal of Catholic Education
In this essay we use the framework of ideas, interests, and institutions to analyze the opportunities and challenges that confront Latino families and Catholic schools as they work to increase Latino enrollment. There are many ideas as to what to do to increase Latino enrollment. It is also apparent that it is in the interests of both Latino families and Catholic schools to have greater Latino enrollment. Despite the challenges of putting these ideas and interests into practice through institutional transformation, there is clear evidence that successful efforts continue to be made to increase Latino enrollment. Nonetheless, this progress seems …

Dan Moshavi is mad about his organizational behavior research at Dominican, and that’s a good thing for his students. Moshavi, recipient of the Barowsky School of Business Outstanding Teacher Award in 2015, specializes in this area of management, which deals with the complexity of human behavior in organizations and the roles that leaders, managers, and employees play in influencing that behavior. His particular interest in attitudes and emotions in the workplace is regularly incorporated into the classroom.

Trusting Telework In The Federal Government, Courtney Brown, Pearl R. Smith Phd, Nancy Arduengo, Martha Taylor
Trusting Telework In The Federal Government, Courtney Brown, Pearl R. Smith Phd, Nancy Arduengo, Martha Taylor
The Qualitative Report
Despite an Executive Office mandate to permit federal workers to telework, federal managers still deny employees this benefit. Several factors have been attributed to their aversion, including lack of trust. Findings from a hermeneutic phenomenological study exploring the lived experiences and perceptions of 12 federal government managers who prohibit their employees from teleworking (Brown, 2013) was analyzed to identify themes related to trust. Of the eight themes Brown identified, five focused on lack of trust. This paper discusses those five trust-related themes and recommends success factors for enabling leaders’ trust of telework are discussed.

Organizational Identification Strategies Of A Low Face-To-Face Member-Contact Organization, Deepa Oommen
Speaker & Gavel
This study looked at the identification seeking strategies of a low face-to-face member-contact organization, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. I used thematic analysis to identify the strategies that the organization used to seek the identification of its members. Findings of the study showed that by emphasizing membership as an exclusive privilege, recognizing the individual as a symbol of excellence, celebrating member achievements, inviting member contributions, emphasizing commitment to diversity, emphasizing organizational symbolism and highlighting testimonials of appreciation, the organization tried to seek the identification of its members. In many of the above-mentioned strategies, the overarching theme of elitism …

Interpersonal Mistreatment, Organizational Attitudes And Well-Being: The Impact Of Instigator’S Hierarchical Position And Demographic Characteristics, Nurul Ain Hidayah Binti Abas, Kathleen Otto
Organization Management Journal
Identifying the consequences of interpersonal mistreatment on the targets' organizational attitudes and well-being is key to promoting a healthy organizational culture. Across two experiments, we explored the impact of an instigator’s hierarchical position and demographic characteristic on the targets’ organizational attitudes and situational well-being. In the first experiment, respondents were presented with a vignette describing an interpersonal mistreatment scenario in which an instigator’s hierarchical position and gender had been manipulated. As hypothesized, interpersonal mistreatment conducted by a supervisor significantly decreased the targets’ organizational commitment and increased turnover intentions. Also, higher turnover intentions and more positive emotions were experienced by those …

Assessing Probation Officers’ Knowledge Of Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities: A Pilot Study, Paige Dunlap
Faculty Publications
The prevalence of offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID) is increasing. Studies have shown that although most probation officers will have offenders with ID on their caseload, these officers have received minimal training to effectively interact with this population. Additionally, no studies have assessed probation officers' knowledge of people with ID. This study has two aims: to pilot test the Probation Officer Knowledge of Intellectual Disabilities Assessment, and to evaluate the instrument's reliability and validity. Test-retest, internal consistency, item-total correlation, Cronbach's alpha, item difficulty, and construct validity were assessed for the instrument. Descriptive statistics and reliability coefficients analysis were conducted. The …

Stirring The Pot: Supporting And Challenging General Education Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Faculty To Change Teaching And Assessment Practice, Vicki Stieha, Susan E. Shadle, Sharon Paterson
University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2016
Evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) have been associated with positive student outcomes; however, institutions struggle to catalyze widespread adoption of these practices in general education science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses. Further, linking EBIPs with integrated learning assessment is rarely discussed in the literature, even though principles of continuous course design for quality higher education assume the connection of learning outcomes, teaching practices, and assessment. This qualitative action research study documents faculty attempting to utilize EBIPs and authentic assessment when they were provided support and accountability over multiple semesters. We document participants’ current practices and encourage shifts in both teaching …
The Evolution Of A Stakeholder Model For Dit As It Enters A Merger Of Three Institutes Of Technology In Terms Of Policy Definition And Control Of Implementation, Deborah Brennan
System and Institutional Design and Transformation
As the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) prepares to amalgamate with the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) and Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) in advance of becoming a technical university, we present a comparison of stakeholder research from 2008 and 2016, questioning how DIT might become better able to respond to the radically changing environment it faces. Using the McNay Model and Fourth Generation Evaluation, we consider the views of two groups of DIT stakeholders on the best model for change. In both years, it was felt that the entrepreneurial university model from the USA was unlikely to be successful, …

An Approach To Designing Services In A Technological University: Re-Engineering Or Seduction?, Eileen Quinn, Olivia Edge, Sharon Feeney
System and Institutional Design and Transformation
This paper is written in the context of three Irish higher education institutions negotiating a merger in order to become Ireland’s inaugural ‘Technological University’. To be designated as a technological university (TU), the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) and Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) are first required to merge and to then transform how they approach and deliver education and the services that support it. In this study, an experimental approach to entice into existence newly designed student- related services in the TU was trialled. The design of the study comprised a series of mini-projects. …
New Era Of Teaching, Learning, And Technology: Teachers’ Perceived Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Towards Differentiated Instruction, Robin A. Millen, Robert Gable
New Era Of Teaching, Learning, And Technology: Teachers’ Perceived Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Towards Differentiated Instruction, Robin A. Millen, Robert Gable
K-12 Education
Shifting from an industrial model of education to a model that best provides students with differentiated instruction (Tomlinson, 2014) requires educational philosophical change (Fullan, 2014) as well as innovation diffusion (Rogers, 2003). The problem is not the amount of research that exists on differentiation, the diffusion of innovations, or the change process. The problem is what new technological pedagogical content knowledge (Koehler & Mishra, 2008) do educators need to make this change process happen? How is this knowledge communicated to finally change the “fundamental processes of schooling” (Elmore, 1996, p. 4)?
This sequential, mixed-methods study addressed the following condensed research …

Implementation And Perceived Effectiveness Of Distributed Leadership In Resa 1 Schools In Southern West Virginia, Ingrida Barker
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The study explored the implementation and effectiveness of distributed leadership as perceived by school administrators in selected schools in southern West Virginia. The data for the study were collected via survey and semi-structured interviews. Ninety-three building level administrators responded to the survey and eleven central office administrators were interviewed.
Generally, building level administrators described the level of implementation of distributed leadership components as partial or above partial. They also described effectiveness levels of distributed leadership components to positively influence student learning as some of the time to most of the time. Statistically significant differences were found for a limited number …
Connecting Political Communication With Urban Politics: A Bourdieusian Framework, Yongjun Shin
Connecting Political Communication With Urban Politics: A Bourdieusian Framework, Yongjun Shin
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In this article, I connect political communication with urban politics by conceptualizing an interdisciplinary urban politics research framework. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of practice and communication, I offer an urban politics research model that simultaneously addresses the dimensions of power struggle and symbolic struggle in urban politics. The theoretical modeling is discussed from an interdisciplinary approach to social studies and constructed with a methodological suggestion of tripartite social network analysis.
Implementing An Intervention To Reduce Seclusion And Restraints In An Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital, Amanda B. Lykins
Implementing An Intervention To Reduce Seclusion And Restraints In An Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital, Amanda B. Lykins
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The need to enhance nursing staff’s knowledge, perceptions and attitudes around alternatives to seclusion and restraint has been well validated in the literature. Seclusion and restraint use in the inpatient psychiatric setting are highly dangerous physical interventions, used to control the behavior of a mentally ill patient who is a danger to self or others. Seclusion and restraint events have the potential to cause emotional trauma, physical injury to patients or staff and the possibility of patient death. The purpose of the capstone project was to implement an evidence-based education program to, improve nursing staff’s (RN, LPN, MHA and SRNA) …

The Writing Center: Reports
As a university hub for campus conversations about writing and other forms of communication, the University of Montana Writing Center administers programs to help undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines become more versatile and effective thinkers, writers, and readers. In one-to-one and small-group tutoring sessions and whole-class workshops, tutors help students recognize their strengths and weaknesses as communicators and to practice strategies appropriate to various communication contexts. In addition, the Writing Center collaborates with faculty to provide instruction that positively impacts student performance, and supports faculty to promote their own development as writers.

A Comparison Between Organizational Behavior And Scientific Laws, George Kenyon, Brian Neureuther, George Irwin
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
The impact of process change is explored through the lens of scientific law. Conceptual links between truths found in the physical sciences and truths found in the managerial sciences are sought in order to understand the complexities of process change. The First Law of Thermodynamics is explores to understand the impact of physics on how managers may view process change. Demand elasticity, capacity management, and operational theory are explored and clarified based on the interface of the laws of physics and the business unit.

Increasing Intrapreneurial Intentions Among Business Students: Using A Net-Enabled Business Innovation Cycle (Nebic) Theory Team Project, Jennifer Nicholson, Yide Shen, Darren Nicholson
Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research
Institutions of higher education are placing greater emphasis on entrepreneurship education. Yet, in reality, few students will actually use their entrepreneurial skills to start a business. Instead, many will go to work for existing organizations as intrapreneurs – those who contribute to entrepreneurship at the firm level. This paper describes how we developed and implemented a team project using the Net-Enabled Business Innovation Cycle (NEBIC) theory as a means to promote intrapreneurial intention in a Technology Entrepreneurship course. We also present pre- and post-project survey results showing that completing the NEBIC project increased students’ intention to become intrapreneurs.
