Current Issues And Developments In Psychology With Regards To Latina/O Americans, Rachel Giddings Jan 2016

Current Issues And Developments In Psychology With Regards To Latina/O Americans, Rachel Giddings

2016 Symposium

Past research has shown that the Chicano/Latino community experience mental illness differently than other populations, and they are largely underserved by mental health professionals. This work explores the underrepresentation of culturally diverse individuals seeking and utilizing psychological services due to the lack of cultural sensitivity of therapists; cynicism by mental health professionals, and an outlook that therapy can be used as an oppressive tool by those in power (Sue & Sue, 1999). In short, there is much apprehension towards traditional therapeutic and intervention models in which most therapists have been educated on are based on and designed to meet the …

The Missing Middle: Understanding The Effects Of Social Enterprise On Nonprofit Performance, Angela White-Jones Jan 2016

The Missing Middle: Understanding The Effects Of Social Enterprise On Nonprofit Performance, Angela White-Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 2008 financial recession has seen increased poverty, job loss, and homelessness as well as decreased spending in health care, education, sanitation, and housing. These factors can lead to tensions across a number of sectors and underscore the need for innovation in for-profit, nonprofit and government organizations. One area of innovation in the nonprofit sector to supplement revenues is by adding social enterprise activity. Social enterprise is the pursuit of earned income activities for an organization that is driven by a community mission or value. Because financial and social problems are becoming increasingly intertwined, this study seeks to understand the …

Turning To Case Studies As A Mechanism For Learning In Action Learning, Denise O'Leary, Paul Coughlan, Clare Rigg, David Coghlan Jan 2016

Turning To Case Studies As A Mechanism For Learning In Action Learning, Denise O'Leary, Paul Coughlan, Clare Rigg, David Coghlan

Articles

Case studies are a useful means of capturing and sharing experiential knowledge by allowing researchers to explore the social, organisational and political contexts of a specific case. Although accounts of action learning are often reported using a case study approach, it is not common to see individual case studies being used as a learning practice within action learning sets. Drawing on a network action learning (NAL) project, this paper explores how the process of coaching, articulating, authoring, sharing and editing case studies provided a vehicle for learning and research within a NAL set. The intended contribution of this paper to …

What Do Corrupt Firms Have In Common? Red Flags Of Corruption In Organizational Culture, Alison Taylor Jan 2016

What Do Corrupt Firms Have In Common? Red Flags Of Corruption In Organizational Culture, Alison Taylor

Center for the Advancement of Public Integrity (Inactive)

What kind of an organizational culture do corrupt companies tend to have? To answer this question, I conducted a study based on a review of academic literature as well as in-depth interviews with 23 prominent lawyers, investigators, scholars, and policymakers with firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of dozens of corrupt firms. They highlighted a number of common traits often missed by standard compliance processes that might be “red flags” for organizational corruption. These traits don’t guarantee corruption within an organization, but they do point to the conditions in which it thrives.

Public Librarian Perceptions : Use Of And Preparedness To Perform Cilf Competencies, Nan Carmack Jan 2016

Public Librarian Perceptions : Use Of And Preparedness To Perform Cilf Competencies, Nan Carmack

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This study surveyed public librarians from American Library Association accredited library and information science programs to ascertain their perceptions regarding their usage of the Online Computer Library Center’s 2015 Competency Index for the Library Field in identifying discrete activities in which librarians engage. The study sought to determine if competency use and feelings of preparedness were affected by the independent variables of type of school attended (traditional or iSchool) and type of library job (youth services, reference, collection management, and administrative). While the interaction of school and job is not significant in reporting perceptions of preparedness, those attending iSchools reported …

Incarceration Incentives In The Decarceration Era, Avlana Eisenberg Jan 2016

Incarceration Incentives In The Decarceration Era, Avlana Eisenberg

Scholarly Publications

After forty years of skyrocketing incarceration rates, there are signs that a new “decarceration era” may be dawning; the prison population has leveled off and even slightly declined. Yet, while each branch of government has taken steps to reduce the prison population, the preceding decades of mass incarceration have empowered interest groups that contributed to the expansion of the prison industry and are now invested in its continued growth. These groups, which include public correctional officers and private prison management, resist decarceration-era policies, and they remain a substantial obstacle to reform.

This Article scrutinizes the incentives of these industry stakeholders …

Addressing Stereotype Threat Is Critical To Diversity And Inclusion In Organizational Psychology, Bettina Casad, William J. Bryant Jan 2016

Addressing Stereotype Threat Is Critical To Diversity And Inclusion In Organizational Psychology, Bettina Casad, William J. Bryant

Psychology Faculty Works

Recently researchers have debated the relevance of stereotype threat to the workplace. Critics have argued that stereotype threat is not relevant in high stakes testing such as in personnel selection. We and others argue that stereotype threat is highly relevant in personnel selection, but our review focused on underexplored areas including effects of stereotype threat beyond test performance and the application of brief, low-cost interventions in the workplace. Relevant to the workplace, stereotype threat can reduce domain identification, job engagement, career aspirations, and receptivity to feedback. Stereotype threat has consequences in other relevant domains including leadership, entrepreneurship, negotiations, and competitiveness. …

A Middle East Quandary: A Comparative Analysis Of State Creation And Political Regime Formation In Egypt, Iraq, And Lebanon, Laura Cianciolo Jan 2016

A Middle East Quandary: A Comparative Analysis Of State Creation And Political Regime Formation In Egypt, Iraq, And Lebanon, Laura Cianciolo

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

Democracy is at a crossroad. At the start of the twenty-first century analysts noted that though in the 1920s only a very small number of sovereign states were led by regimes that had the basic components necessary to qualify as a democracy, by 1990 that number had increased to 69, and by 2012 to 117. Between the years 2005 and 2013, however, political rights and civil liberties underwent substantial setbacks. Of no less significance, hopes that Middle Eastern states would begin their transitions toward democracy as a result of the spring revolts of 2011 experienced a very short lifespan.

The 12 Steps Of Addiction Recovery Programs As An Influence On Leadership Development: A Personal Narrative, Mitchell Friedman Jan 2016

The 12 Steps Of Addiction Recovery Programs As An Influence On Leadership Development: A Personal Narrative, Mitchell Friedman

School of Education Faculty Research

My participation in a 12-step addiction program based on the principles and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been critical for my leadership development. As I worked to refrain from addictive behaviors and practiced 12-step principles, I experienced a shift from individualistic, self-centered leadership towards a servant leader orientation. I thus consider the 12-step recovery process, which commenced in 2001, a leadership formative experience (LFE) as it had the greatest influence on my subsequent development. My experience of thinking about and rethinking my life in reference to leadership and followership lends itself to a personal inquiry. It draws on work …

A Reflective Hybrid Approach To Connecting Leadership Style And Stakeholder Perspective, Huw Jones, Keith O. Hunter

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

Using quantitative analysis and reflection techniques, we examine employee perception of leadership style and perceived results within organizations based in Whistler, Canada. We are primarily concerned with results in terms of organizational culture towards 3 key stakeholder groups, customers, community, and employees. The observed differences in results between transformational and transactional leadership provide a basis for enriching the mapping of leadership style to desired outcomes.

Toward An Ontology Of Workarounds: A Literature Review On Existing Concepts, Nina Röder, Manuel Wiesche, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar Jan 2016

Toward An Ontology Of Workarounds: A Literature Review On Existing Concepts, Nina Röder, Manuel Wiesche, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar

Information Systems and Analytics

While workarounds are studied frequently in information systems research, a coherent and interrelated structure to organize the knowledge of the field is still missing. In this study, we provide a first step towards an ontology of workarounds in order to enable researchers to study the relationships among the core concepts. By identifying existing literature, we discover three gaps in workaround research: (1) lack of conceptual consensus, (2) fragmentation and (3) static perspective. To advance theory, we provide an overview of different types of workarounds that are frequently used in literature. Based on these findings we derive core concepts of workarounds …

A Social Responsibility View Of The "Patent-Centric Linear Model" Of University Technology Transfer, Christopher S. Hayter Jan 2016

A Social Responsibility View Of The "Patent-Centric Linear Model" Of University Technology Transfer, Christopher S. Hayter

Duquesne Law Review

Research universities are increasingly recognized for their role in regional and national economic prosperity. The contributions of research universities are primarily related to their role in the production and dissemination of new knowledge into society, including through the education of students.

New knowledge is the seed corn of innovation, and thus drives social and economic development. Given that research universities are sanctioned by society as non-profit, publicly-chartered organizations devoted to the public good, this article posits that their primary responsibility related to the production of new knowledge-especially new knowledge flowing from federally-funded research-is its rapid dissemination. While there are many …

Growing Awareness Of Cultural Aspects Of Psychology As A Resource For Managing Progressive Social Change, Robert Serpell Jan 2016

Growing Awareness Of Cultural Aspects Of Psychology As A Resource For Managing Progressive Social Change, Robert Serpell

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

I suggest that CCP’s early preoccupation with direct comparison between culturally-contrastive groups has been overtaken in importance by a number of trends in developmental and applied psychology. Some Western theorists now acknowledge reflexively that their interpretation of psychological variables is itself informed by a particular cultural system of meanings. A growing number of non-Western theorists have proposed alternative cultural psychologies. Mainstream developmental psychology has incorporated culture as an essential dimension of the field, leading to increasingly systemic theories. Cultural sensitivity is widely perceived as essential for the design and interpretation of psychological assessment. The IACCP has contributed to these trends …

Examining The Relationship Between Principal Leadership And School Climate, Eric Stephen Lane Jan 2016

Examining The Relationship Between Principal Leadership And School Climate, Eric Stephen Lane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between transformative school principal leadership and school climate. The population of this study consisted of two middle schools with grades ranging from six through eight and one high school with grades ranging from nine through twelve. These schools are within the state of Texas. Quantitative data were obtained by using two instruments, the Principal Leadership Questionnaire (Jantzi & Leithwood, 1996) and the School Climate Assessment Instrument (Alliance for the Study of School Climate, 2014), and evaluated to determine if (a) correlations exist between the factors of transformational leadership and …

The Development And Implementation Of Hospital-Based Clinical Guidelines To Enhance Nursing Staff Efficacy In Glycemic Management At A Large Psychiatric Teaching Hospital, Cherno Bah Jan 2016

The Development And Implementation Of Hospital-Based Clinical Guidelines To Enhance Nursing Staff Efficacy In Glycemic Management At A Large Psychiatric Teaching Hospital, Cherno Bah

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: This quality improvement project was conducted at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo (CMHIP) in order to improve glycemic management. In psychiatric inpatient settings, proper glycemic management is inadequate which increases metabolic risk and poor patient outcomes. One way to address this problem is by using practice guidelines and education, which enhances nurses’ efficacy.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to develop and implement a glycemic management guideline to enhance clinical nursing staff knowledge and confidence.

Method: Fifty-five clinical nursing staff attended an in-service and were asked to fill out a survey before and after the in-service …

On The Dead End Of Current Research On Burnout's Prevalence, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent Jan 2016

On The Dead End Of Current Research On Burnout's Prevalence, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent

Publications and Research

Dimou et al. (2016) concluded that >50% of surgeons experience burnout. For three reasons, we think that such conclusions are unwarranted. First, there are no consensual or binding diagnostic criteria for burnout. Second, recent research (e.g., Bianchi, Schonfeld, & Laurent, 2015) suggests that burnout is actually a depressive syndrome. Finally, we note that researchers’ recommendations about stress-reducing organizational changes often remain incantatory because they insufficiently consider the economic issues and macrosocial power relationships that can hamper the recommendations’ implementation. Current practices in burnout research have led to an accumulation of results, the clinical meaning of which is obscure.

E-Government Initiatives Case Study: New Models For Success, Douglass P. Smith Jan 2016

E-Government Initiatives Case Study: New Models For Success, Douglass P. Smith

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This case study examines the efforts of a mid-tier, cabinet-level state agency to transform its constituency services to be more effective using information technology. The agency, based in a rural Midwestern state, faced increased scrutiny to raise accuracy, lower wait times, decrease expenditures, increase constituency satisfaction, and expand services to the state. To meet these challenges, the agency conducted a series of meetings to determine best possible opportunities for change and decided that technology solutions, which supported their business vision of the future, would be the foundation for that change. Redesigning core organizational processes—using several technologies such as e-commerce, content …

Strategic Onboarding Of Online Doctoral Students: Creating A Pathway To Academic Persistence, Barbara Holmes, Kent Willis, Ericka Woods

Education Doctorate Faculty Works

An onboarding strategy can help online universities improve new doctoral student productivity, engagement, and retention. A prescribed plan is vital to ensure the onboarding process is aligned, and clear designed support is provided for students. Recent literature justifies strategic onboarding includes acquiring the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviors to become successful members of an organization (Beaver and Erdogan, 2011). Similarly, doctoral students may benefit from clearly designed rules, protocols, and practices exclusive to the online doctoral experience. This study presents the process of strategic onboarding strategies for that will provide a smart start for online doctoral students.

Leading Head Start Turnaround: A Four-Stage Turnaround Model For Transforming Program Performance, Seanelle Tracy, Michael Wischnowski

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

Head Start programs must meet federal performance standards or may now face a process of "recompetition", a situation where the current grantee could lose the Head Start program to other agencies. This article is based on interviews with Head Start directors who were faced with the threat of recompetition, but were able to turn around their programs in time to avoid the possibility of losing them. A model for Head Start turnaround emerged in these interviews and is shared in this article.

Examining The Impact Of Accreditation On A Primary Healthcare Organization In Qatar, Alia G. Banna

2010-2016 Archived Posters

While a modest body of literature exists on accreditation, little research has been conducted on the impact of accreditation on primary care in the Middle East. This descriptive correlational study assessed the changes resulting from the integration of Accreditation Canada International’s (ACI) program at Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in the State of Qatar.
