Metacogonitive And Motivational Cultural Intelligence: Superpowers For Creativity An A Culturally Diverse Environment, Sabina Bogilović, Miha Škerlavaj Mar 2016

Metacogonitive And Motivational Cultural Intelligence: Superpowers For Creativity An A Culturally Diverse Environment, Sabina Bogilović, Miha Škerlavaj

Economic and Business Review

We propose that employees who are highly motivated for cultural interactions (motivational cultural intelligence) and can modify their thinking about cultural differences (metacognitive cultural intelligence) are more likely to be creative in culturally diverse environments. Based on the social categorization theory, we propose that metacognitive and motivational cultural intelligence will be positively related to individual creativity. Moreover, we predict that metacognitive and motivational cultural intelligence can decrease the negative aspects of the social categorization process and, in turn, be positively related to creativity. A quantitative analysis of 787 employees in 20 SME multicultural companies in the Adriatic region shows that …

Age And Employee Green Behaviors: A Meta-Analysis, Brenton M. Wiernik, Stephan Dilchert, Deniz S. Ones

Publications and Research

Recent economic and societal developments have led to an increasing emphasis on organizational environmental performance. At the same time, demographic trends are resulting in increasingly aging labor forces in many industrialized nations. Commonly held stereotypes suggest that older workers are less likely to be environmentally responsible than younger workers. To evaluate the degree to which such age differences are present, we meta-analyzed 132 independent correlations and 336 d-values based on 4676 professional workers from 22 samples in 11 countries. Contrary to popular stereotypes, age showed small positive relationships with pro-environmental behaviors, suggesting that older adults engaged in these workplace …

Proficiency-Based Education

In this current year, Phase IV, researchers collected new data from qualitative interviews and document analysis in six case study school districts in Maine, representing a range of demographics, geographic regions and implementation stages. Three of these districts had been involved in at least one year of Phase I-III of this study, allowing for exploration of ongoing implementation practices and comparing perceived challenges and benefits from initial implementation to later stages. Findings suggested that Maine's proficiency-based high school diploma mandate had mobilized PK-12 collaborative professional work, but there was an evident need for even greater professional time for full systemic …

Navigating Through The Fog Of Vertical Merger Law: A Guide To Counselling Hospital-Physician Consolidation Under The Clayton Act, Thomas L. Greaney, Douglas Ross Mar 2016

Navigating Through The Fog Of Vertical Merger Law: A Guide To Counselling Hospital-Physician Consolidation Under The Clayton Act, Thomas L. Greaney, Douglas Ross

Washington Law Review

Lawyers assessing legality under the antitrust laws of hospital acquisitions of physician practices face a quandary. The case law is sparse, federal enforcement guidance outdated, and academic input conflicting. Applying these muddled standards in the rapidlyevolving health care sector only magnifies the uncertainty. While most transactions will be competitively neutral or beneficial, rapidly evolving market conditions causing integration between hospitals and physicians present opportunities for consolidations that may harm consumer interests. Indeed, given the highly concentrated structure of many hospital markets in the nation, preemptive acquisitions of physician practices may be a tempting strategy for some to undermine competition. This …

Seeking Solutions To Long-Term Public Engagement In Rapidly Diversifying Communities: A Case Study In Washington County, Oregon, Meg Merrick, Andrée Tremoulet

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

This paper explores the challenges in engaging a rapidly diversifying public in county government decision-making. The State of Oregon recognized the importance of meaningful public engagement by naming it as the first goal of its landmark statewide land use planning system adopted in 1973. Washington County, which is part of Portland’s tri-county metropolitan region, is geographically large, historically white but, in recent years, rapidly diversifying. It is also largely suburban and includes the region’s largest unincorporated communities. In addition, Washington County includes significant agricultural activities and small rural communities.

The Moderating Effect Of Individual Employee Attributes On The Relationship Between Managerial Communication And Employee Job Satisfaction In Times Of Change, Ashley Hall Mar 2016

The Moderating Effect Of Individual Employee Attributes On The Relationship Between Managerial Communication And Employee Job Satisfaction In Times Of Change, Ashley Hall

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Change is common within organizations today, and companies are seeking employees who will adapt to the changes with a minimum level of disruption to the organization. Although a large literature base exists outlining ways to implement and manage change efforts from both research and practitioner perspectives, many change initiatives do not meet expectations. A lack of communication from management has been identified as a major contributor to resistance to change. As such, managerial communication plays an integral role in the change management process. This study investigated the moderating role of three individual employee attributes (i.e., organizational trust, managerial trust, and …

Seventeen individuals participated, including six child care licensing officers, one licensing supervisor, five members of the CCFL management team, and seven licensees. Interviews, a focus group, and an electronic survey were utilized to obtain data on the phenomenon. …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Perceptions Of Response To Intervention (Rti) Implementation Factors And Self-Reported Rti Implementation Efforts, Kim Jones Mar 2016

The Relationship Between Teachers' Perceptions Of Response To Intervention (Rti) Implementation Factors And Self-Reported Rti Implementation Efforts, Kim Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Response to Intervention (RTI) is an educational reform effort that is being implemented across the nation. Considering that the systematic implementation of the RTI process requires organizational change, teachers may be hesitant or resistant to engage in the change process. This study organizes the potential barriers of RTI implementation into the RTI implementation factors of vision, professional development, professional support, and time resources. This quantitative study explored the relationship between teachers' perceptions of these RTI implementation factors and teachers' self-reported RTI implementation in their classrooms. The survey results came from 553 elementary school teachers across the state of Utah (30% …

The Groundwork For Successful Cohort- Based Fiscal Capacity-Building: An Evaluation Of The Strengthening Financial Management Initiative, Nancy Devine Mar 2016

The Groundwork For Successful Cohort- Based Fiscal Capacity-Building: An Evaluation Of The Strengthening Financial Management Initiative, Nancy Devine

The Foundation Review

This article is based on the findings of an evaluation of The Wallace Foundation’s Strengthening Financial Management initiative, which show that it is possible, with well-designed training and support, to enhance the ability of nonprofit leaders to strategically manage their resources for long-term sustainability and programmatic quality.

The initiative tested two models of capacity building – a relatively high-intensity approach and a lighter, though still substantive, model. While the two shared a common core of content, the amount of resources provided in each of the two models was dramatically different.

In addition to the two main findings – that building …

Internal Culture, External Impact: How A Change-Making Culture Positions Foundations To Achieve Transformational Change, Amy Celep, Sara Brenner, Rachel Mosher-Williams Mar 2016

Internal Culture, External Impact: How A Change-Making Culture Positions Foundations To Achieve Transformational Change, Amy Celep, Sara Brenner, Rachel Mosher-Williams

The Foundation Review

This article argues that a foundation’s internal culture is critical to achieving large-scale social change, but that efforts to build a change-making culture too often are left out of strategy conversations.

While there is no one culture that suits every foundation, a particular set of characteristics must be present in those that seek large-scale social change: a focus on outcomes, transparency, authenticity, collaboration, racial equity and inclusion, continuous learning, and openness to risk.

This article offers insights into why culture can be challenging for foundations to address and maintain, examines cases of successful culture change at foundations, and offers advice …

Culture: For Small To Medium Sized Enterprises It Enhances Entrprenurial Orientation, Donald G. Chambers

Student Scholarship

Small to medium sized firms are an important yet understudied context of business in the US. Most research on smaller firms centers on the entrepreneurial aspects of such firms and ignore other possible explanation for small firm success. Organizational culture has been shown in separate studies to positively impact firm outcomes but the combination of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and firm culture has rarely been tested. We conducted an inquiry into the effects of both EO and cultural attributes of small firms by surveying 220 individuals working in small firms in a variety of capacities. What we found was that while …

Transcending We/They: A Qualitative Formative Evaluation Of The Transformative Potential Of An In-District Leadership Development Program, Jennifer Anne Sharp Feb 2016

Transcending We/They: A Qualitative Formative Evaluation Of The Transformative Potential Of An In-District Leadership Development Program, Jennifer Anne Sharp

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative formative evaluation study revealed how teacher participation in an in-district leadership academy at a New Jersey school district engaged participants in preparing for future leadership roles. A program evaluation using qualitative methods can provide feedback on initiatives so that informed decisions can be made about program improvements (Patton, 2002b; Powell, 2006). Using a series of focus group discussions and interviews to gather such feedback, the study has informed decisions about one program’s evolving structure. Themes that emerged from the data provided by 13 participants were viewed through a constructivist framework, and using Mezirow’s (1981; 1985; 1994; 1997) theory …

Phoning It In? Examining Pre-Employment Phone Interview Procedure In Higher Education, Paul J. Antonellis Jr., Danielle Flam

Management Faculty Publications

In the United States, the employment screening process for hiring full-time faculty in higher education involves the vetting of curricula vitae, phone interview(s), and/or campus visits (Cardeiro, 2010; Shively, Woodward, & Stanly, 1999). The purpose of this research was to examine the phone interview procedure at one institute of higher education, and from there, formulate a systematic phone interviewing procedure that could be put to use at this particular university.

After conducting a review of relevant literature, the researchers engaged in action research that utilized qualitative data of 10 participants who took part in the pre-interview, professional development intervention, and …

An Evaluation Of The Standard Setting Performance Of The Fasb, Devon Rolleri

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This paper develops a framework for evaluating the effects of various organizational changes on the performance of a regulatory agency in standard setting. I apply this framework to examine whether numerous Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) modifications influence the performance of the Board during the standard setting process. These modifications include changes in FASB funding, voting, and Board member characteristics, particularly professional backgrounds and political affiliations. To analyze the performance of the Board, I follow the operations management literature to construct a set of variables that capture team effectiveness and managerial performance. A factor analysis on these variables produces three …

Unique Multiorganizational Collaborative Proves Effective In Delivering 2014 Farm Bill Education, Gary A. Hachfeld, Curtis L. Mahnken, C. Robert Holcomb, Dave B. Bau, Elizabeth R. Berning

Journal of Extension

The Agricultural Act of 2014 is critical to the economic safety net for U.S. producers. This act represented a major change in philosophy, requiring producers to make key decisions about their options on the basis of risk management. To add to the complexity of the issue, the time period for delivering applicable education to landowners before sign-up deadlines was relatively short. This article highlights a unique multiorganizational statewide approach to delivering the applicable education. It involved University of Minnesota Extension, the Center for Farm Financial Management, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and banks and resulted in substantive evaluative outcomes.
