Radioresistance Of Brain Tumors, K. Kelley, J. Knisely, M. Symons, R. Ruggieri
Radioresistance Of Brain Tumors, K. Kelley, J. Knisely, M. Symons, R. Ruggieri
Journal Articles
Radiation therapy (RT) is frequently used as part of the standard of care treatment of the majority of brain tumors. The efficacy of RT is limited by radioresistance and by normal tissue radiation tolerance. This is highlighted in pediatric brain tumors where the use of radiation is limited by the excessive toxicity to the developing brain. For these reasons, radiosensitization of tumor cells would be beneficial. In this review, we focus on radioresistance mechanisms intrinsic to tumor cells. We also evaluate existing approaches to induce radiosensitization and explore future avenues of investigation.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening acute inflammatory condition associated with metabolic complications. Accumulation of free fatty acids (FFAs) induces inflammation and causes lipotoxic effects in the liver. Because fatty acid metabolism plays a role in the inflammatory response, we hypothesized that the administration of C75, a fatty acid synthase inhibitor, could alleviate the injury caused by sepsis. METHODS: Male mice were subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). At 4 h after CLP, different doses of C75 (1- or 5-mg/kg body weight) or vehicle (20% dimethyl sulfoxide in saline) were injected intraperitoneally. Blood and liver tissues were collected …

AIM: Skin conductance (SC) provides an objective measure of autonomic system regulation through sympathetic-mediated filling of sweat glands. This study aimed to test the utility of SC to detect sympathetic activation in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). METHODS: 14 term (mean, SE: 38.8 + 0.35 weeks gestational age) neonates with chronic prenatal opiate exposure were enrolled. SC (peaks/sec and mean of peaks) were measured at baseline, during heel lance/squeeze (HLS) and recovery from HLS at 24-48 (mean 38) hours of life prior to treatment for NAS. Blinded coders with established reliability assessed neonates using the Modified Finnegan Neonatal Scoring System (MFNSS). …

Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
We compare Lebanese and American consumers on mindful consumption behavior. We define mindful consumers as individuals who, in all stages of consumer behavior, are aware of themselves, their communities and the society at large and behave in ways that contribute to the well-being of all these entities. We conducted a two-phase survey on a total of 210 consumers, 97 in the USA and 113 in Lebanon. We found significant impacts of consumers’ life beliefs such as satisfaction with life, locus of control, and temporal focus and of life values on different aspects of their mindful behavior.

Increased Il-17 And Tgf-Ss Serum Levels In Peripheral Blood Of Patients With Ss-Thalassemia Major: Implication For Continual Transfusions Role In T Helper 17-Mediated Proinflammatory Responses, Rasoul Baharlou, Mohammad Hassan Davami, Abbas Ahmadi-Vasmehjani, Morteza Ebrahimi
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Recent studies have shown that IL-17-producing CD4+ T helper (Th17) cells play an important role in proinflammatory processes. In this report we analyzed IL-17, IL-21, and TGF-β serum levels in the peripheral blood of Iranian beta-thalassemia major patients that clinically exhibited splenectomy and iron overload. Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from 43 beta-thalassemia patients and 43 healthy individuals with no history of malignancies or autoimmune disorders. Then serum levels of IL-17, IL-21, and TGF-β were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The levels of IL-17 (P = 0.005) and TGF-β (P < 0.001) were significantly higher in the thalassemia patients compared to the healthy control. No significant differences in the level of serum IL-21 was observed between the patients and controls. There were no significant differences in serum levels of IL-17, IL-21, and TGF-β between patients with high or low serum levels of ferritin. Conclusion: Multiple blood transfusions cause constant immune stimulation, as a result of repeated exposure to new alloantigens. This might have significant effects on the stimulation of cytokine producing cells in those patients and cytokine profile can be used as a related marker for assessing disease severity and consequently therapeutic intervention.

How Does High Intensity Interval Exercise Affect Fat Loss?, Melissa Grohman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
US survey trends show that since the 1970’s there has been a decline in energy intake, (consumption of food) and a rise in the prevalence of obesity. This suggests that there must have been a dramatic decrease in total energy expenditure. Energy expenditure is the sum of energy (or calories) the body needs to carry out physical functions such as breathing and digestion, as well as the energy used in physical activity. As the rate of obesity in the US increases, it is becoming more and more important to find ways to increase energy expenditure, specifically through physical activity. Physical …

Urban Appalachian Festival Proposal, Sarah Holbrook, Courtney Johnston, Ian Buchanan, Cody Stanley, Alex Umble
Senior Year Experience Student Projects
We at COAL think that Appalachian culture has been marginalized by American urban centers and being an Appalachian American comes with many negative stereotypes. This is especially felt right here in the Franklinton neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. We want to make an impact in the community in a way that lessens stereotypes towards Appalachian Americans and help the city of Columbus be more inclusive towards Appalachian culture.
We propose to do this by organizing an Appalachian cultural festival that will both address the specific needs of Franklinton and celebrate its Appalachian roots. The specific issues we wish to address include …

Understanding Ige-Mediated Food Allergies, Melissa M. Malinky
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Working as a nurse in a pediatric Allergy/Immunology clinic one would observe that the prevalence and resulting awareness of IgE-mediated food allergies in children has increased over the past decade. Many schools and camps are now going “nut free” and requiring Food Allergy Action Plans from a diagnosing physician. A study by Gupta et al. (2011) estimated 8% of children in the United States have a food allergy. Primary care providers (PCPs) are at the forefront of recognition, diagnosis, treatment and patient education of IgE-mediated food allergies. PCPs can benefit greatly from further education of the current evidence based diagnostic …

Postoperative Ileus, Jamie Pearson
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
This author’s goal with this poster is to provide research on postoperative ileus to help others learn more about the pathophysiology of the condition, causes of ileus, symptoms, treatments, and prevention. By learning more on postoperative ileus, healthcare providers will be better prepared to care for postoperative patients to help prevent ileus after surgery and to better care for the patient if they were to develop an ileus. This poster can also serve as an education tool for patients by teaching the patient preventative measures to help protect themselves postoperatively.
Pediatric Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Regina F. Prusinski
Pediatric Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Regina F. Prusinski
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Gastroesophageal reflux is the return of stomach contents into the esophagus. It is normal in the newborn due to an immature gastroesophageal sphincter. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition found in 3.3% of the pediatric population that occurs when the physiological barrier of the esophageal sphincter opens during a transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation (TLESR)period (Rinsma et al., 2016) resulting in complications like mucosal erosion, bleeding, dysphagia or failure to thrive (Quitadamo, Ummarino, Saiano, 2015). GERD in children can be directly related to late maturation of the gastroesophageal (GE) sphincter or an impaired hormonal or neurotransmitter response. A …

Seasonal fluctuations in food availability can affect diets of consumers, which in turn may influence the physiological state of individuals and shape intra- and inter-specific patterns of resource use. High-elevation ecosystems often exhibit a pronounced seasonal “pulse” in productivity, although few studies document how resource use and energetic condition by avian consumers change in relation to food-resource availability in these ecosystems. We tested the hypothesis that seasonal increases (pulses) in food resources in high-elevation sagebrush ecosystems result in 2 changes after the pulse, relative to the before-pulse period: (1) reduced diet breadth of, and overlap between, 2 sympatric sparrow species; …

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) intends to monitor mosquito populations across its broad geographical range of sites because of their prevalence in food webs, sensitivity to abiotic factors, and relevance for human health. We describe the design of mosquito population sampling in the context of NEON's long‐term continental scale monitoring program, emphasizing the sampling design schedule, priorities, and collection methods. Freely available NEON data and associated field and laboratory samples, will increase our understanding of how mosquito abundance, demography, diversity, and phenology are responding to land use and climate change.

The Meaning Of Evidence And Nonmaleficence: Cases From Nursing, Chenit Ong-Flaherty Dnp, Angela Banks Phd, Martha Doyle Msn, Claire Olivia Sharifi
Journal of Health Ethics
In our increasingly diverse environment, nurses are obligated to question the meaning of “evidence” when history has shown that our emphasis on the empirical and quantitative data has shaped our biases against knowledge unknown to us. This bias has limited our ability to provide patient or person-centered care, and can be harmful to patients. Nurses are encouraged to reflect on what evidence means in their practice, and to make sure harm is not caused to patients by dismissing evidence yet unknown to us or accepting “truths” not fully understood by us. The authors use composite case studies to share experiences …

Evidence of whether nutrition students are free from food-related issues or at higher risk for eating disorders is inconsistent. This study aimed to assess disordered eating behaviors and food addiction among nutrition and non-nutrition major college students. Students (n = 967, ages 18–25, female 72.7%, white 74.8%) enrolled at a public university completed online demographic characteristics surveys and validated questionnaires measuring specific disordered eating behaviors. Academic major category differences were compared. Additionally, high risk participants were assessed by weight status and academic year. Overall, 10% of respondents were a high level of concern for developing eating disorders. About 10.3% of …

Child care providers play an important role in feeding young children, yet little is known about children’s influence on providers’ feeding practices. This qualitative study examines provider and child (18 months −4 years) feeding interactions. Trained data collectors observed 200 eating occasions in 48 family child care homes and recorded providers’ responses to children’s meal and snack time behaviors. Child behaviors initiating provider feeding practices were identified and practices were coded according to higher order constructs identified in a recent feeding practices content map. Analysis examined the most common feeding practices providers used to respond to each child behavior. Providers …

Perceived Weight Discrimination And 10-Year Risk Of Allostatic Load Among Us Adults, Maya Vadiveloo, Joseimer Mattei
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Background
Discrimination promotes multisystem physiological dysregulation termed allostatic load, which predicts morbidity and mortality. It remains unclear whether weight-related discrimination influences allostatic load.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to prospectively examine 10-year associations between weight discrimination, allostatic load, and its components among adults 25–75 years in the Midlife Development in the US Biomarker Substudy.
Methods
Participants with information on weight discrimination were analyzed (n=986). At both timepoints, participants self-reported the frequency of perceived weight discrimination across nine scenarios as “never/rarely” (scored as 0), “sometimes” (1), or “often” (2). The two scores were averaged and then dichotomized …
