Community-Based Diabetes Screening And Risk Assessment In Rural West Virginia, Ranjita Misra, Cindy Fitch, David Roberts, Dana Wright
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This project utilized a cross-sectional study design to assess diabetes risk among 540 individuals from 12 counties using trained extension agents and community organizations in West Virginia. Individuals were screened for diabetes using (1) the validated 7-item diabetes risk assessment survey and (2) hemoglobin A1c tests. Demographic and lifestyle behaviors were also collected. The average age, body mass index, and A1c were 51.2 ± 16.4, 31.1 ± 7.5, and 5.8 ± 0.74, respectively. The majority were females, NonHispanic Whites with no prior diagnosis of diabetes. Screenings showed that 61.8% of participants were at high risk for diabetes. Family history of …

For two libraries (PDF1 and ODF1) using Illumina sequencing 44,082,301 and 43,708,132 clean reads were obtained, respectively. After being mapped to the bovine RefSeq database, 15,533 genes were identified to be expressed in both types of follicles (cut-off RPKM > 0.5), of which 719 were highly expressed in bovine follicles (cut-off RPKM > 100). Furthermore, 83 genes were identified as being differentially expressed in ODF1 versus PDF1, where 42 genes were upregulated and 41 genes were downregulated. KEGG pathway analysis revealed two upregulated genes in ODF1 versus PDF1, CYP11A1, and CYP19A1, which are important genes in the steroid hormone biosynthesis pathway. This …

Feasibility For Measuring Transverse Area Ratios And Asymmetry Of Lumbosacral Region Paraspinal Muscles In Working Dogs Using Computed Tomography, Bethany Cain, Jeryl C. Jones, Ida Holaskova, Larry Freeman, Bess Pierce
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Objectives: Describe computed tomographic (CT) anatomy of canine lumbosacral (LS) paraspinal muscles, a method for measuring paraspinal muscle transverse area ratios and asymmetry using CT, and application of this method in a small sample of working dogs with versus without LS pain.
Methods: Published anatomy references and atlases were reviewed and discrepancies were resolved by examination of anatomic specimens and multiplanar reformatted images to describe transverse CT anatomy of LS region paraspinal muscles. Sixteen Belgian malinois military working dogs were retrospectively recruited and assigned to LS pain positive versus negative groups based on medical record entries. A single observer unaware …

LIM homeobox 8 (Lhx8) is a germ cell-specific transcription factor essential for the development of oocytes during early oogenesis. In mice, Lhx8 deficiency causes postnatal oocyte loss and affects the expression of many oocyte-specific genes. The aims of this study were to characterize the bovine Lhx8 gene, determine its mRNA expression during oocyte development and early embryogenesis, and evaluate its interactions with other oocyte-specific transcription factors. The bovine Lhx8 gene encodes a protein of 377 amino acids. A splice variant of Lhx8 (Lhx8_v1) was also identified. The predicted bovine Lhx8 protein contains two LIM domains and one homeobox domain. However, …

The National Institute on Aging Interventions Testing Program (ITP) evaluates agents hypothesized to increase healthy lifespan in genetically heterogeneous mice. Each compound is tested in parallel at three sites, and all results are published. We report the effects of lifelong treatment of mice with four agents not previously tested: Protandim, fish oil, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and metformin – the latter with and without rapamycin, and two drugs previously examined: 17-a-estradiol and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), at doses greater and less than used previously. 17-a-estradiol at a threefold higher dose robustly extended both median and maximal lifespan, but still only in males. …
Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Institutional Advisement, Bailey Judd
Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Institutional Advisement, Bailey Judd
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
As colleges and universities continue to enroll student-athletes, higher education professionals should emphasize their efforts to see students succeed in their athletics, as well as their academic work. The current study sought to unearth the student-athlete experience related to advisement using phenomenological design. Advisement is defined more holistically and includes institutional constituents offering support to student-athletes. The results suggest that student-athletes encounter significant challenges or difficulties as they attempt to balance their academic and athletic priorities. Student-athletes indicated several groups of individuals who were key supporters during their time spent in a collegiate sport. Implications from the study indicate a …

Reflecting Back: Do Senior Students Believe They Experienced A Sophomore Slump?, Taylor M. Eddy
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
The present study sought to understand the reasoning behind the occurrence of the sophomore slump through the perspectives of students. Though the sophomore slump is defined as overall poor academic performance and apathy toward academia, the reasoning for this trouble has not received deep exploration. The researcher for the present study surveyed fifty-one seniors to understand better what year of college these students considered their worst, most difficult, and/or most disappointing. Sixteen of those seniors (31%) indicated at least one semester during their sophomore year that they would categorize as the “worst.” Sixty-seven percent indicated freshman year, and 50% indicated …

Implementation And Effects Of India's National School-Based Iron Supplementation Program, Hannah Ruebeck
Honors Thesis Collection
Reducing the rate of anemia is a primary public health concern in many developing countries, where more than half of school-aged children suffer from the many serious consequences of childhood anemia. India has some of the highest rates of iron-deficiency anemia in the world and in 2013 implemented the national school-based Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Program (IFASP) with the goal of reducing the prevalence and severity of anemia among school children. Although many highly controlled efficacy trials document the ability of iron supplementation to improve iron levels, there is little evidence about the best methods for providing supplements to …
An Assessment Of The Medium Term Impacts Of A Honduran Conditional Cash Transfer Experiment On Education And Fertility, Jacqueline Li
An Assessment Of The Medium Term Impacts Of A Honduran Conditional Cash Transfer Experiment On Education And Fertility, Jacqueline Li
Honors Thesis Collection
Conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs have been widely used in the developing world as a tool to break the poverty cycle. Short-term studies have found positive impacts of CCTs on education and health outcomes. However, little is known about longer-term outcomes of beneficiaries and any unintended consequences, namely on fertility, that there may be. This paper assesses medium-term (5-6 years after program implementation) impacts of a Honduran CCT, PRAF-II, on education and fertility. PRAF-II was a random experiment that provided cash transfers to 40 out of 70 poor municipalities. Conditions included school enrollment and regular health checkups. Using data from …

The Victim/Perpetrator Continuum: Understanding The Roles And Experiences Of Female Combatants In Colombia’S Armed Conflict, Savitri Restrepo Alvarez
Honors Thesis Collection
In December 2015, supported by the Schiff fellowship, I traveled to Colombia to interview recently demobilized female FARC guerillas participating in state reintegration programs. Estimates suggest that 40% of the combatants in Colombia’s decades-long conflict are women. However, the complex role that women have played has largely been overlooked. Much of the literature on conflict resolution assumes a dichotomy in which women are either ‘victims’ or ‘perpetrators.’ In reality, the distinction between these absolute categories is never entirely clear. The purpose of my trip was to examine women’s particular experiences as combatants, looking at the circumstances that led them to …

El Significado De Salud: Social Determinants Of Health, Public Policy, And Mexican-Born Women In Chicago, Nikita Saladi
Honors Thesis Collection
According to the World Health Organization, social determinants of health are the "conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life." To attain better health outcomes, such determinants and the public policies that shape them must be considered. In my research, I attempt to answer two questions: how do social determinants of health such as socioeconomic status, place, and access to health care affect the health of Mexican-born women in Chicago? Furthermore, how do public policies shape such determinants and the health of these …

How Does Your Garden Grow: Nature, Ecology, And The Urban Environment In Paradise Lost, Ting Shan Lee
How Does Your Garden Grow: Nature, Ecology, And The Urban Environment In Paradise Lost, Ting Shan Lee
Honors Thesis Collection
In Milton studies, there is an underlying assumption that Milton did not engage with his contemporaries. When we think about the motivations behind Paradise Lost, we first think of Milton’s poetic ambition to write the first English epic, and second the subject of creation and the fall of mankind, which is wholly disconnected from the present time. In neither case do we connect the poem to Milton’s historical context. I argue that Milton was living in a literary world composed of Classical authors and his peers that had seen important meditations on what a garden can and should be. …

Where we live matters for our health. The social, economic, and physical features of neighborhoods can play a powerful role in health and longevity. Neighborhood concentration of poverty and poor health have been shown to be linked. Residing in low-income neighborhoods has been associated with diet related chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
