Effects Of Chemotherapy-Induced-Peripheral-Neuropathy On Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters And Fall Risk In Cancer Patients After The Completion Of Chemotherapy Drug Treatment, Timothy F. Marshall

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy often experience chemotherapy-induced-peripheral-neuropathy, which reportedly causes gait disturbances that may increase their risk for falls. Falls are a significant event because they have been linked to serious injuries and disabilities, loss of independence, and increased mortality rates. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess whether chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is associated with spatiotemporal gait adaptations in posttreatment adult cancer survivors when compared to healthy, disease-free, age and morphologically matched controls. Methods: In a quasi-experimental design, 16 subjects participated in the present study. There were 8 CIPN subjects between the ages of 50–70 years of …

Abstract

A significant health burden exists related to type 2 diabetes. Evidence-based solutions through research are needed to improve diabetes outcomes. Faith community diabetes education can be utilized to provide the knowledge needed to manage the disease. The purpose of the current study was to determine if a faith-based community diabetes education program including health coaching can increase self-efficacy in people with type 2 diabetes.

This pilot study used a pre-test/post-test format for data collection. Following diabetes education for all participants, half of the group received health coaching and the other half no further intervention. A survey consisting of two …

Implementing Faith Community Nursing Interventions To Promote Healthy Behaviors In Adults, Donna M. Callaghan

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Purpose: To report the implementation of faith community nursing interventions to promote healthy behaviors in adults. Callaghan (2015) reported the development of this intervention, which was based on previous studies that support the importance of spiritual growth on the initiative and responsibility for self-care across the life span (Callaghan, 2003, 2005, 2006). The intervention also included strategies to increase self-efficacy of healthy behaviors. The results of three separate implementations of the health promotion intervention are presented in this report.

Procedures: Three health promotion programs were implemented over a five year period (2010 – 2015). These programs were offered for the …

Perceptions Of The Influence Of Black Greek Affiliation On Involvement, Engagement, And Persistence On Black Male Student Success: Differences Between A Historically Black University And A Predominantly White Institution, Eric Dwayne Flowers Feb 2016

Perceptions Of The Influence Of Black Greek Affiliation On Involvement, Engagement, And Persistence On Black Male Student Success: Differences Between A Historically Black University And A Predominantly White Institution, Eric Dwayne Flowers

Theses and Dissertations

While there is research on the impact of Greek Letter Organization membership on college student engagement and success, the focus is primarily on the experiences of White students with mixed results. The findings in these studies include lower moral and cognitive development and less concern for social issues than their non-Greek counterparts. However, other research has identified potentially positive outcomes associated with Greek membership, including increased opportunities for leadership development and higher levels of student involvement. In particular, participation in Black Greek Letter Fraternities (BGLFs) has consistently been found to be the most popular avenue for African American men as …

An Interdisciplinary Study Of Perceived Benefits, Barriers And Cues To Action Among College Students For Moderate To Vigorous Physical Activity, Daniel Orellano Jr

Theses and Dissertations

This interdisciplinary study examines the perceived benefits, barriers, and cues to action for physical activity, in a sample of 385 men and women college students. Though no significant differences were identified between the genders in their physical activity levels or perceived benefits, barriers, and cues, significant differences were found in the numbers of these different variables as well as types of physical activity among the student participants as a whole. Improving health was found to be the primary perceived benefit for engaging in physical activity whereas school workload and wanting to look physically fit were the primary barrier and cue …

Principals of primary schools in the state of Victoria (Australia) were deliberately chosen as participants as they are key school leaders who have a high degree of autonomy and power to improve the quality of teaching. The Victorian state Government Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) first listed outcome for children 0–8 years is: ‘children have the best start to life to achieve optimal health, development and wellbeing’. Hence, this research offers pertinent results and recommendations in achieving this outcome. …

Microrna Dysregulation And Esophageal Cancer Development Depend On The Extent Of Zinc Dietary Deficiency., Louise Fong, Cristian Taccioli, Ruiyan Jing, Karl Smalley, Hansjuerg Alder, Yubao Jiang, Paolo Fadda, John Farber, Carlo M Croce Feb 2016

Microrna Dysregulation And Esophageal Cancer Development Depend On The Extent Of Zinc Dietary Deficiency., Louise Fong, Cristian Taccioli, Ruiyan Jing, Karl Smalley, Hansjuerg Alder, Yubao Jiang, Paolo Fadda, John Farber, Carlo M Croce

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Zinc deficiency (ZD) increases the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and marginal ZD is prevalent in humans. In rats, marked-ZD (3 mg Zn/kg diet) induces a proliferative esophagus with a 5-microRNA signature (miR-31, -223, -21, -146b, -146a) and promotes ESCC. Here we report that moderate and mild-ZD (6 and 12 mg Zn/kg diet) also induced esophageal hyperplasia, albeit less pronounced than induced by marked-ZD, with a 2-microRNA signature (miR-31, -146a). On exposure to an environmental carcinogen, ~16% of moderate/mild-ZD rats developed ESCC, a cancer incidence significantly greater than for Zn-sufficient rats (0%) (P ≤ 0.05), but lower than …

Coupling Between Nutrient Availability And Thyroid Hormone Activation, Lattoya Josephine Lartey Feb 2016

Coupling Between Nutrient Availability And Thyroid Hormone Activation, Lattoya Josephine Lartey

Open Access Dissertations

Thyroid hormone is essential for metabolism, growth, development and cognitive function. Thyroid hormone is secreted in two forms, the biologically active 3,5,3’-triiodothyronine (T3) and the inactive thyroxine (T4) that must be converted to T3 in order to gain biological activity. This reaction is catalyzed by type II deiodinase (D2), a thioredoxin-fold containing selenoenzyme; its activity plays an essential role in thyroid hormone activation. The thyroid gland is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. It responds to food availability via leptin induction of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) in the hypothalamus and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the pituitary. These actions stimulate …

Β-Cell Adaptation To Elevated Palmitate Concentrations (Hyperlipidemia), Daniel R. Lathen, Jeffery S. Tessem Ph.D. Feb 2016

Β-Cell Adaptation To Elevated Palmitate Concentrations (Hyperlipidemia), Daniel R. Lathen, Jeffery S. Tessem Ph.D.

Student Works

It is estimated that over 370 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, and this number is increasing rapidly. Normally, β-cells in the pancreas secrete insulin, which is necessary for proper glucose absorption and storage. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are characterized by decreased functional β-cell mass and insulin production, and increased circulating glucose and fatty acid levels. Diabetics’ pancreata maintain small amounts of functional β-cells, but these surviving cells are damaged and destroyed over time due to the harmful effects of hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. These β-cells must adapt to survive. Hence, diabetes is itself a selective process. We …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Macrophage activation/polarization to distinct functional states is critically supported by metabolic shifts. How polarizing signals coordinate metabolic and functional reprogramming, and the potential implications for control of macrophage activation, remains poorly understood. Here we show that IL-4 signaling co-opts the Akt-mTORC1 pathway to regulate Acly, a key enzyme in Ac-CoA synthesis, leading to increased histone acetylation and M2 gene induction. Only a subset of M2 genes is controlled in this way, including those regulating cellular proliferation and chemokine production. Moreover, metabolic signals impinge on the Akt-mTORC1 axis for such control of M2 activation. We propose that Akt-mTORC1 signaling calibrates metabolic …
