Lydia Wirkus, a Florida native, grew up in the Miami area, near the Everglades. After college at Florida State, she taught for a few years in Miami, and then earned a master’s degree. One day she woke up and decided she didn’t want to live in Miami anymore, and that it would be cool to move to Alaska, so she drove from Miami to Alaska and taught for a few years. After earning a second master’s in nutrition at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, she returned to Alaska and worked for a while in child nutrition, before returning …

Effects Of High Hydrostatic Pressure On Expression Profiles Of In Vitro Produced Vitrified Bovine Blastocysts, Zongliang Jiang, Patrick Harrington, Ming Zhang, Sadie L. Marjani, Joonghoon Park, Lynn Kuo, Csaba Pribenszky, Xiuchun Tian Feb 2016

Effects Of High Hydrostatic Pressure On Expression Profiles Of In Vitro Produced Vitrified Bovine Blastocysts, Zongliang Jiang, Patrick Harrington, Ming Zhang, Sadie L. Marjani, Joonghoon Park, Lynn Kuo, Csaba Pribenszky, Xiuchun Tian

Faculty Publications

High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) has been used to pre-condition embryos before essential, yet potentially detrimental procedures such as cryopreservation. However, the mechanisms for HHP are poorly understood. We treated bovine blastocysts with three different HHP (40, 60 and 80 MPa) in combination with three recovery periods (0, 1 h, 2 h post HHP). Re-expansion rates were significantly higher at 40 and 60 but lower at 80 MPa after vitrification-warming in the treated groups than controls. Microarray analysis revealed 399 differentially expressed transcripts, representing 254 unique genes, among different groups. Gene ontology analysis indicated that HHP at 40 and 60 MPa …

Concentration And Ratio Of Essential Fatty Acids Influences The Inflammatory Response In Lipopolysaccharide Challenged Mice, Korry J. Hintze, J. Tawzer, Robert E. Ward Feb 2016

Concentration And Ratio Of Essential Fatty Acids Influences The Inflammatory Response In Lipopolysaccharide Challenged Mice, Korry J. Hintze, J. Tawzer, Robert E. Ward

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of both the % of dietary, 18-carbon PUFA (2.5%, 5% and 10%) and the n-6:n-3 ratio (1:1, 10:1 and 20:1) on the acute inflammatory response. Mice were fed diets for 8 weeks and injected intraperitoneally with LPS to induce acute inflammation. After 24. h mice were sacrificed and plasma cytokines measured. Diets significantly affected the erythrocyte PUFA composition and the effect of PUFA ratio was more prominent than of PUFA concentration. The % dietary PUFA affected feed efficiency (p

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

The metabolism of glutamate into ornithine, arginine, proline, and polyamines is a major network of nitrogen-metabolizing pathways in plants, which also produces intermediates like nitric oxide, and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that play critical roles in plant development and stress. While the accumulations of intermediates and the products of this network depend primarily on nitrogen assimilation, the overall regulation of the interacting sub-pathways is not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that diversion of ornithine into polyamine biosynthesis (by transgenic approach) not only plays a role in regulating its own biosynthesis from glutamate but also affects arginine and proline biosynthesis. Using …

Ethics And Character Formation In Sports: A Philosophical Perspective, Timothy Madigan Feb 2016

Ethics And Character Formation In Sports: A Philosophical Perspective, Timothy Madigan

Philosophy and Classical Studies Faculty/Staff Publications

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) famously proclaimed that “God is dead and we have killed Him.” Might one say similarly that in today s “winner take all” society “sportsmanship is dead and we have killed it”? Is the very concept no longer relevant in the modern age of competitive sports? In this essay I will show how three long dead philosophers—Aristotle, Kant, and the aforementioned Nietzsche—still have much to teach us about sportsmanship and its continued relevance for the present day.

Sexual Behavior Varies Between Same-Race And Different-Race Partnerships: A Daily Diary Study Of Highly Sexually Active Black, Latino, And White Gay And Bisexual Men, Christian Grov, Demetria Cain, H. Jonathan Rendina, Ana Ventuneac, Jeffrey T. Parsons Feb 2016

Sexual Behavior Varies Between Same-Race And Different-Race Partnerships: A Daily Diary Study Of Highly Sexually Active Black, Latino, And White Gay And Bisexual Men, Christian Grov, Demetria Cain, H. Jonathan Rendina, Ana Ventuneac, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

Background. Gay and bisexual men (GBM) are at elevated risk for gonorrhea and chlamydia trachomatis (GC/CT). Rectal GC/CT symptoms may be less obvious than urethral, increasing opportunities for undiagnosed rectal GC/CT.

Method. A U.S. national sample of 1,071 GBM completed urethral and rectal GC/CT testing and an online survey.

Results. In total, 6.2% were GC/CT positive (5.3% rectal, 1.7% urethral). We calculated adjusted (for education, race, age, relationship status, having health insurance, and income) odds ratios for factors associated with rectal and urethral GC/CT diagnoses. Age was inversely associated with urethral and rectal GC/CT. Compared to White men, Latinos had …

Cogenerative Dialogue: Developing Biology Learning Accommodations For Students With Disabilities, Edward Lehner Feb 2016

Cogenerative Dialogue: Developing Biology Learning Accommodations For Students With Disabilities, Edward Lehner

Publications and Research

A prominent challenge, at times under-addressed in the science education literature, is considering what types of learning accommodations science teachers should employ for students with disabilities. Outside of science education, researchers have consistently outlined how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is one efficient means by which to engage students with disabilities in the curriculum. This paper presents the results of a research study in which teachers employed cogenerative dialogue as a learning space where UDL was used to differentiate and individualize instruction in an inclusive biology class. The data originated from a larger, ongoing, longitudinal ethnography of science learning in …

Differential Expression Of Pancreatic Protein And Chemosensing Receptor Mrnas In Nkcc1-Null Intestine, Emily M. Bradford, Kanimozhi Vairamani, Gary E. Shull

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

AIM: To investigate the intestinal functions of the NKCC1 Na+-K+-2Cl cotransporter (SLC12a2 gene), differential mRNA expression changes in NKCC1-null intestine were analyzed.

METHODS: Microarray analysis of mRNA from intestines of adult wild-type mice and gene-targeted NKCC1-null mice (n = 6 of each genotype) was performed to identify patterns of differential gene expression changes. Differential expression patterns were further examined by Gene Ontology analysis using the online Gorilla program, and expression changes of selected genes were verified using northern blot analysis and quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction. Histological staining and immunofluorescence were performed …
