Evaluating The Role That A Putative Fxiii Binding Site Plays In The Reactivity Of Three Glutamines Within The Coagulation Substrate Fibrinogen Aα (233-425)., Chad A. Stephens May 2016

Evaluating The Role That A Putative Fxiii Binding Site Plays In The Reactivity Of Three Glutamines Within The Coagulation Substrate Fibrinogen Aα (233-425)., Chad A. Stephens

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Formation of a stable thrombus in vivo depends on the interaction between fibrinogen and the transglutaminase factor XIII (FXIII). Characteristics of blood plasma, such as concentration of Ca2+, are well known to regulate the activation and subsequent reactivity of FXIII. Despite this knowledge, the role fibrin(ogen) plays in modulating FXIII activation and reactivity is not entirely delineated. Currently, the coagulation substrate fibrinogen Aα is proposed to contain a binding site for the active factor XIII with fibrinogen Aα E396 serving a major role. A series of mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy studies was conducted to assess whether putative interactions between …

The Influence Of The Estrous Cycle On Acute Seizure Activity, Alexis Yagielski May 2016

The Influence Of The Estrous Cycle On Acute Seizure Activity, Alexis Yagielski

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Epilepsy is a neurological disease that is characterized by spontaneous seizure activity. Seizures are excitatory events that result from the abnormal excessive and hypersynchronous firing of populations of neurons in the brain. Catamenial epilepsy is a condition in which seizure threshold fluctuates during the female menstrual cycle. It is commonly hypothesized that this fluctuation is due to the changes in estradiol:progesterone ratio that occur over the course of the menstrual cycle (Herzog, 2008). It has been shown in many studies that estradiol has proconvulsant properties whereas progesterone possesses anticonvulsant properties. Considering the pattern of hormonal variation and the effects of …

Improving The Nutrient Content Of Agriculture Crops Through Community Ecology, Margo Malone May 2016

Improving The Nutrient Content Of Agriculture Crops Through Community Ecology, Margo Malone

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Agriculturists continually look for ways to improve the nutrient content of crops without decreasing yield or economic benefits. Mutualistic relationships have the potential to enhance the nutrient content without sacrificing the production needs of the farmer. Mutualisms occur when two or more species interact and both members of the association benefit. An exceedingly important and often overlooked mutualism is the one formed between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plants. This interaction has been shown to be a critical component of most ecosystems, yet our understanding of these relationships is still limited. We know that in exchange for photosynthetically derived carbon, …

The Effects Of Large Herbivores On Soil Organic Matter Quality In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Adrian Alvarez May 2016

The Effects Of Large Herbivores On Soil Organic Matter Quality In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Adrian Alvarez

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Understanding the factors that control the natural fluxes of carbon into and out of terrestrial ecosystems is of paramount importance to forecast and adapt to climate change. Soil respiration – the release of carbon dioxide from roots and soil micro-organisms– is considered to be the largest terrestrial source of carbon dioxide. Microbial respiration, the least understood component of soil respiration, is to a great extent determined by soil organic matter quality, reflecting the relative fractions of labile and recalcitrant soil carbon. The goal of this research was to examine how herbivory affects soil organic matter quality across a wide range …

Arab Women In Development: A Postcolonial Legacy, Rachel Bass May 2016

Arab Women In Development: A Postcolonial Legacy, Rachel Bass

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The way in which women in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have been portrayed in international development and rights discourse is based on a narrow, ahistorical view of Arab/Muslim majority societies, which exhibits an overconfidence in the discipline of economics and the ideology of neoliberalism, or free-market economics. Based on arguments presented by anthropologists, feminist economists, geographers, sociologists, comparative literary scholars and others, I explore in this thesis the legacy of colonialism in MENA in its various incarnations: as physical colonization in the 19th and 20th centuries; as suppression of indigenous knowledge in favor of …

Jesus Wouldn’T Mow, He’D Grow: Transforming Congregations, Lawns, And Food Security In Linn County, Ia, Juliette Crellin May 2016

Jesus Wouldn’T Mow, He’D Grow: Transforming Congregations, Lawns, And Food Security In Linn County, Ia, Juliette Crellin

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This study looks at religious organizations, lawns, and food insecurity in Linn County, and seeks to evaluate a hypothesis set forth by the founder of a farming nonprofit in the county. The Kendrick Hypothesis states that Linn County congregations could grow enough food on their lawns to eliminate food insecurity in the region. The study assesses this hypothesis using a yield analysis and survey of local religious leaders. While the study found that full participation in a congregation garden program could produce enough yield to significantly impact the county’s food insecurity, the results do not support the Kendrick Hypothesis. The …

Lactate As A Memory-Enhancing Metabolite Across The Lifespan In Male Fischer 344 Rats, Brooke Hamling May 2016

Lactate As A Memory-Enhancing Metabolite Across The Lifespan In Male Fischer 344 Rats, Brooke Hamling

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Aging is often associated with cognitive decline, including problems with working memory and difficulties forming new memories. These deficits can be directly linked to the hippocampus, an area of the temporal lobe of the brain that is engaged during spatial working memory. Age-related declines may be influenced by changes in important modulatory pathways that impact hippocampal function, including regulation of the metabolite lactate. When astrocytic stores of glycogen are hydrolyzed, lactate is released into the extracellular space where it can be taken up by neurons and used as fuel during moments of activation. We previously found that the extracellular concentration …

Female Farming Systems, Elizabeth Ransom, Wynne Wright, Carmen Bain May 2016

Female Farming Systems, Elizabeth Ransom, Wynne Wright, Carmen Bain

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Female farming systems draws attention to women's (re)productive roles in agriculture, with particular attention to questions of power, equity, and empowerment. Female farming systems as an organizing concept highlights what was a surprisingly neglected field of study until the 1970s and provides insights into the gendered nature of agriculture. In the past and the present the term “farmer” presumes a male identity. Globally, women have often been marginalized from farming by denying them access to the material resources needed for success such as land, labor, and capital. Due to a variety of reasons there is a feminization of agriculture underway, …

Selection Of Food Patches By Sympatric Herbivores In Response To Concealment And Distance From A Refuge, Miranda M. Crowell, Lisa A. Shipley, Meghan J. Camp, Janet L. Rachlow, Jennifer S. Forbey, Timothy R. Johnson

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Small herbivores face risks of predation while foraging and are often forced to trade off food quality for safety. Life history, behaviour, and habitat of predator and prey can influence these trade-offs. We compared how two sympatric rabbits (pygmy rabbit, Brachylagus idahoensis; mountain cottontail, Sylvilagus nuttallii) that differ in size, use of burrows, and habitat specialization in the sagebrush-steppe of western North America respond to amount and orientation of concealment cover and proximity to burrow refuges when selecting food patches. We predicted that both rabbit species would prefer food patches that offered greater concealment and food patches that …

An Evaluation Of Two Peer Literacy Strategies For The Development Of Reading Comprehension In Third Grade, Low-Income Students, Olivia L. Herring

Honors Theses

Generally speaking, low-income students fall behind their peers when it comes to reading and comprehension. Comprehension is a necessary tool for success, both in school and beyond, and must be taught effectively to these struggling students (Beirne, & Velsor, 2012). Studies have shown the benefit of student discussion and utilization of peer reading strategies in the fostering of comprehension. This study will compare students’ success after reading passages using two peer reading comprehension strategies: Paragraph Shrinking (a component of Peer-Assisted Learning) and Reciprocal Teaching. There are many questions to explore: After using both strategies, does either one encourage greater independent …

Evaluation And Selection Of A Bacillus Based Direct-Fed Microbial Candidate For In Situ Enzyme Production To Improve Gut Health Integrity, Bone Quality And Growth Performance In Poultry, Juan David Latorre Cardenas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade, the increasing interest in renewable energy sources has been changing the distribution of corn utilization from human and animal consumption to biofuel production, leading to a continuous rise in feed costs of livestock diets. Therefore, alternative feed ingredients such as distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), as well as cereals like wheat, barley, and sorghum have become part of the feed matrix to maintain or reduce production costs. However, these raw materials often contain a higher concentration of antinutritional factors in comparison to corn, including non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) which increase digesta viscosity and reduce nutrient absorption …

Effect Of Potassium Deficiency On Uptake And Partitioning In The Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Plant And Detection By A Crop Reflectance Sensor, Taylor Dayne Coomer May 2016

Effect Of Potassium Deficiency On Uptake And Partitioning In The Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Plant And Detection By A Crop Reflectance Sensor, Taylor Dayne Coomer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to grow and develop normally, plants need to uptake the necessary amount of nutrients and use those nutrients in a beneficial fashion. It is recognized that cotton needs a certain tissue concentration of ions to achieve and maintain growth rates (Siddiqi et al., 1987). One of the most essential and abundant nutrients in cotton is potassium (K), second only by mass to nitrogen (N) (Marschner, 1995; Oosterhuis et al., 2013). Potassium exists in the soil in four separate pools and moves through soil to roots mainly through diffusion (Rengel & Damon, 2008; Samal et al., …

Dietary Effects On The Stoichiometry Of Growth, Regulation, And Wastes Of Ozark Stream Insect Detritivores, Halvor Matthew Halvorson May 2016

Dietary Effects On The Stoichiometry Of Growth, Regulation, And Wastes Of Ozark Stream Insect Detritivores, Halvor Matthew Halvorson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A widespread stressor, anthropogenic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution can increase resource nutrient content and alter animal community composition in freshwater ecosystems. In this dissertation, I used ecological stoichiometry theory to examine effects of diet nutrient content and leaf litter type on growth, regulation, and wastes of aquatic invertebrate detritivores. I tested effects of leaf litter diet carbon:phosphorus (C:P) on growth and stoichiometric regulation of the detritivorous caddisfly Pycnopsyche lepida and used results to determine a threshold elemental ratio of oak litter C:P=1620 that confers peak growth of this species. This empirical, growth-based approach provided a more accurate estimate …

Influence Of Fatty Acids And Their Derivatives On Aphid Resistance In Arabidopsis And Tomato, Jiamei Li May 2016

Influence Of Fatty Acids And Their Derivatives On Aphid Resistance In Arabidopsis And Tomato, Jiamei Li

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fatty acid desaturases (FADs) are enzymes that act in the chloroplast or the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to incorporate double bonds into the acyl chains of fatty acids, and recent evidence indicates that at least one of these enzymes, FAD7, also influences plant resistance to aphids. FAD7 is an enzyme in the chloroplast that is found throughout the plant kingdom and that desaturates 16- and 18-carbon fatty acids (FAs) with two double bonds (dienoic acids) to generate FAs with three double bonds (trienoic acids). In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, mutants with impaired FAD7 function are more …

Poor Maternal Nutrition During Gestation Alters Mesenchymal Stem Cell (Msc) Metabolism In Offspring, Nicole H. Sereda May 2016

Poor Maternal Nutrition During Gestation Alters Mesenchymal Stem Cell (Msc) Metabolism In Offspring, Nicole H. Sereda

Honors Scholar Theses

Poor maternal diet refers to either a nutritional excess or deficiency in the mother during gestation (Reed et al. 2014). It has been well-studied that poor maternal gestational nutrition limits bone and muscle development while increasing adipose development in the offspring (Oreffo et al. 2003; Reed et al. 2014). There is also evidence that suggests poor maternal diet during gestation impairs mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) function (Oreffo et al. 2003). Tissues including bone, muscle, and adipose are derived from this fetal MSC pool (Lawrence et al. 2012). It was hypothesized that poor maternal diet during gestation would negatively alter MSC …

Influence Of Cattle Grazing Practices On Dung Beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) Communities In The Sandhill Rangelands Of Central Nebraska, Patrick M. Wagner May 2016

Influence Of Cattle Grazing Practices On Dung Beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) Communities In The Sandhill Rangelands Of Central Nebraska, Patrick M. Wagner

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) have a significant role in regulating the ecosystem services they provide on rangelands. Colonization of dung piles by dung beetles can help facilitate the decomposition of dung, control dung-breeding pests, and cycle important nutrients into the soil to improve pasture quality. Cattle are grazed on pastures at various stocking densities depending on the type of grazing practice. The influence of grazing practices on dung beetle communities and services remains largely unknown.

Our first study investigated dung beetle activity across different cattle grazing practices to determine how grazing might influence dung beetle abundance and diversity. Dung beetle …

Malnutrition is one of the biggest problems facing India today. Thus, the functioning of the Public Distribution System (PDS) - which provides subsidized food to hundreds of millions of people is critically important. However, while numerous studies have evaluated the performance of the PDS in rural areas, there is a notable lack of research in urban slums, a rapidly growing population. Through interviews with PDS beneficiaries and other stakeholders, the present study examines the PDS in one slum in Delhi and finds numerous problems, including low quality grain, corruption, and the lack of an effective complaint mechanism. Although several states …

"All I Do Is Win": The No-Lose Strategy Of Cafo Regulation Under The Caa, Karl J. Worsham May 2016

"All I Do Is Win": The No-Lose Strategy Of Cafo Regulation Under The Caa, Karl J. Worsham

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Corporate farms, often known as concentrated animal feeding operations ("CAFO'), provide inexpensive animal products but do so by externalizing the cost of their operation in the form of environmental harms and risks to human health. This article explores one possible approach to mitigating CAFO-caused harms. It argues that CAFO regulation under any one of three Clean Air Act ("CAA ") programs will result in net benefits, not just for air quality, but also for other CAFO-caused harms and thus, that CAA regulation of CAFOs is a no-lose strategy. The article then goes further to conclude that, while regulation under any …
