We Built It And They Did Not Come: Using Governance Theory In The Fight For Food Justice In Low-Income Communities Of Color, Deborah N. Archer, Tamara Belinfanti
We Built It And They Did Not Come: Using Governance Theory In The Fight For Food Justice In Low-Income Communities Of Color, Deborah N. Archer, Tamara Belinfanti
Articles & Chapters
Food deserts and food insecurity have received considerable attention from various stakeholders, such as state and local governments, community organizations, and private sector institutions. These stakeholders have sought to overcome food insecurity by turning food deserts into oases by providing “access” to fresh, healthy food. However, many of their solutions—building supermarkets and sponsoring farmers markets—have missed the mark. Residents of food deserts did not flock to grocery stores to purchase fruits andvegetables. As a result, many stakeholders blame the residents of food deserts for their own predicament, lamenting, to paraphrase Field of Dreams, “we built it but they did not …
Identifying Six-Row Barley Genotypes For Specific Brewer Needs Using A Dna Fingerprint, Jose Antonio Rivera Dompenciel
Identifying Six-Row Barley Genotypes For Specific Brewer Needs Using A Dna Fingerprint, Jose Antonio Rivera Dompenciel
Plant Sciences
Six-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) malt is an important raw material of beer. Each barley cultivar has its own unique malt profile for specific traits. The two biggest brewers in the United States, Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) and MillerCoors Brewing Company (MillerCoors), have different malt profiles for their ideal malt. MillerCoors wants moderate levels of protein and enzymatic activity while ABI wants higher levels of protein and enzymatic activity. Two cultivars that have the ideal malt profile for each company are Robust for MillerCoors and Stander for ABI. The pedigree of these two cultivars is very narrow; thus, understanding the genetic …
Rotating Cross-Arm And Winter Row Covers For Floricane Blackberry (Rubus Subgenus Rubus Watson) Production In North Dakota, David Charles Mettler
Rotating Cross-Arm And Winter Row Covers For Floricane Blackberry (Rubus Subgenus Rubus Watson) Production In North Dakota, David Charles Mettler
Plant Sciences
Blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson) production has potential to expand into North Dakota, but this will only occur with the evaluation of new cultivars and overwintering protection methods. Ten cultivars under four row cover treatments were evaluated for hardiness, vegetative growth, yield, and factors affecting fruit quality. Thermo-couples monitored air temperature under each treatment. Results indicate that the treatments differed in their ability to moderate winter air temperatures. Row covers had little effect on growth but differences were found between cultivars. The thermal blanket with corn stover resulted in significantly higher yield and more berries, but row covers did not …
Oil-Based Food Extracts From Distillers Dried Grains, Joseph Michael Kallenbach
Oil-Based Food Extracts From Distillers Dried Grains, Joseph Michael Kallenbach
Plant Sciences
The goal of this project was to examine benefits of developing a DDGS-based extract for human food consumption. The antioxidant activity of extracts derived from corn and distillers’ dried grains with solubles (DDGS) was determined. Adding 1% DDGS extract to chips significantly decreased peroxide value and hexanal content compared to the control and potentially lengthened the oxidation induction period. Supercritical carbon dioxide was successful in producing extracts with similar phytochemical content, but adding 0.05% extract to crackers did not significantly reduce oxidation, although the DDGS extract may have lengthened the induction period. Tocopherols and lutein significantly decreased during oxidation and …
Glutograph 'E': A Simple Rheometer To Measure Quality Of Cooked Pasta, Kueh Fei Fernandez
Glutograph 'E': A Simple Rheometer To Measure Quality Of Cooked Pasta, Kueh Fei Fernandez
Plant Sciences
Glutograph ‘E’ was designed to determine the stretch and relaxation properties of wet gluten. Usage of this equipment to evaluate the cooked pasta texture has not been reported and thus is the goal of this research. Procedure development involved the evaluation of the number of impulses, relaxation time, the number of spaghetti strands, and the number of tests per sample to give a reliable treatment mean. Different impulses settings affected the magnitude of strain, time and percent recovery. Traditional spaghetti required less time to reach 800 B.U and had greater percent recovery and strain values than did nontraditional spaghetti. Glutograph …
Simulated Glyphosate Drift Effects On 'Red Norland' Commercial And Seed Potato Industries, Amanda Crook
Simulated Glyphosate Drift Effects On 'Red Norland' Commercial And Seed Potato Industries, Amanda Crook
Plant Sciences
Field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015 to evaluate effects of glyphosate drift on ‘Red Norland’ potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown for commercial and seed industries. Glyphosate drift was simulated by applying sub-lethal doses during the growth stages of tuber initiation (TI), early tuber bulking (EB), and late tuber bulking (LB). Sub-lethal glyphosate doses applied to mother plants had the greatest effect on daughter tubers during TI, resulting in high tuber sets and increased unmarketable tubers. Glyphosate applied to mother plants resulted in residue in the daughter tubers. When these tubers were used as seed, glyphosate …
Symmetric Protoplast Fusion In Interserial Syringa (Oleaceae) Hybridization, Nathan Allen Maren
Symmetric Protoplast Fusion In Interserial Syringa (Oleaceae) Hybridization, Nathan Allen Maren
Plant Sciences
Few other woody plants embody the preeminence of temperate woody plants in garden cultivation like the lilacs. In spite of their relationship, the trees lack the diversity of cultivated floral forms observed within the shrub lineages. Typical selection and cross-pollination schemes within the tree lilacs or between trees and shrubs have failed to yield the diversity of colors and fragrances on a tree form. With somatic fusion in Citrus spp. as a guideline for Syringa spp. protoplast isolation and culture, experiments were designed to optimize the conditions through somatic fusion. Protoplast isolation experiments revealed yield increases with increased exposure to …
Contemplating The Gap-Filling Role Of Social Intrapreneurship, Tamara Belinfanti
Contemplating The Gap-Filling Role Of Social Intrapreneurship, Tamara Belinfanti
Articles & Chapters
Social intrapreneurs occupy an intersectional space within the large corporate form at the crossroads of innovation, profit, and social good. They are often described as "disruptive" because they devise new ways to tackle problems, usually social in nature, in a manner that disrupts traditional operating models or long-standing assumptions. Although much has been written about social intrapreneurs in managerial literature, legal literature has been silent. This Article reverses that trend and develops a theory of social intrapreneurship from a corporate law perspective. Specifically, this Article posits that social intrapreneurship in terms of praxis, characteristics, and process can be conceptualized as …
Your Corrupt Ways Had Finally Made You Blind: Prosecutorial Misconduct And The Use Of Ethnic Adjustments In Death Penalty Cases Of Defendants With Intellectual Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin
Articles & Chapters
In a recent masterful article, Professor Robert Sanger revealed that, since the Supreme Court's decision in Atkins v. Virginia, some prosecution experts have begun using so-called "ethnic adjustments" to artificially raise minority defendants' IQ scores, making such defendants-who would otherwise have been protected by Atkins and, later, by Hall v. Florida-eligible for the death penalty. Sanger accurately concluded that ethnic adjustments are not logically or clinically appropriate when computing a person's IQ score for Atkins purposes. He relied further on epigenetics to demonstrate that environmental factors-such as childhood abuse, poverty, stress, and trauma-can cause decreases in actual IQ scores, and …
Imagining Global Health With Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin
Imagining Global Health With Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article offers a way to achieve global health with justice as a global health imperative. It is possible to have global health without justice, meaning that improvements in health outcomes could be achieved, but without a fair distribution of the benefits of good health. It is also possible to have justice without global health, where health outcomes are evenly distributed across the population but overall health is not improved. With this understanding, this article challenges current ways of understanding global health, and argues that absolute reductions in morbidity and premature mortality are not robust indicators of success in the …

Biodegradation Of Lignin By Fungi, Bacteria And Laccases, Fnu Asina
Biodegradation Of Lignin By Fungi, Bacteria And Laccases, Fnu Asina
Theses and Dissertations
Lignin, a heterogeneous three-dimensional biopolymer, is one of the building blocks of lignocellulosic biomass. Due to its limited chemical reactivity, lignin is currently processed as a low value by-product in pulp and paper mills. Therefore, valorization of lignin holds great potential as this would provide a readily available source of aromatic compounds for various industrial applications. In this study, indulin AT biodegradation was assessed by comparing the effects of basidiomycetous fungi (Coriolus versicolor and Trametes gallica) and actinobacteria (Mycobacterium sp. and Streptomyces sp.) to those of two commercial laccases, those from T. versicolor (≥ 10 U/mg) and C. versicolor (≥ …

Hommage Á Trois: A Tale Of Some Very Hungry Grammia Spp. Caterpillars, Katherine Hernandez
Theses and Dissertations
Larvae of the Arctiinae use an impressive arsenal of defenses to protect themselves against natural enemies. Several species within this subfamily have been studied for their defensive capabilities, specifically the use of plant secondary metabolites. Life history and sequestration patterns of secondary metabolites have been well documented for Grammia incorrupta; however, little information exists for other species of Grammia. Furthermore, information on sequestration patterns during the immature stages of several Grammia spp. is largely unknown. To address these gaps in knowledge, I am conducting a comparative study of the chemical ecology and life history traits for the virgin tiger moth …

Political Ideology, Beliefs And Values As A Framework For Analysis Of School Nutrition Preferences, Jacquelyn R. Nyenhuis
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple studies have documented the growing controversies in school nutrition public policy. Less is known about the political ideologies, beliefs and diverse perspectives coming from conflicting values and their influence on policy acceptance. Key issues examined are: Does the average US citizen filter their impressions of policies through their core beliefs, values and politics? And, in general, what policies, interventions, and regulations do conservatives and liberals favor?
Utilizing a sequential mixed methods design, Phase I included a survey given to 201 people with both a multi-item closed ended section and an open-ended section. Statistical analysis was performed on the quantitative …

Regular Fat And Reduced Fat Dairy Products Show Similar Associations With Markers Of Adolescent Cardiometabolic Health, Theresa A. O'Sullivan, Alexandra P. Bremmer, Trevor A. Mori, Lawrence J. Beilin, Charlotte Wilson, Katherine Hafekost, Gina L. Ambrosini, Rae Chi Huang, Wendy H. Oddy
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Reduced fat dairy products are generally recommended for adults and children over the age of two years. However, emerging evidence suggests that dairy fat may not have detrimental health effects. We aimed to investigate prospective associations between consumption of regular versus reduced fat dairy products and cardiometabolic risk factors from early to late adolescence. In the West Australian Raine Study, dairy intake was assessed using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires in 860 adolescents at 14 and 17-year follow-ups; 582 of these also had blood biochemistry at both points. Using generalized estimating equations, we examined associations with cardiometabolic risk factors. Models incorporated …
