Kinesiology

Several studies have indicated a positive influence of leucine supplementation and aerobic training on the aging skeletal muscle signaling pathways that control muscle protein balance and muscle remodeling. However, the effect of a combined intervention requires further clarification. Thirteen month old CD-1® mice were subjected to moderate aerobic exercise (45 min swimming per day with 3% body weight workload) and fed a chow diet with 5% leucine or 3.4% alanine for 8 weeks. Serum and plasma were prepared for glucose, urea nitrogen, insulin and amino acid profile analysis. The white gastrocnemius muscles were used for determination of muscle size and …

Assessing The Contribution Of Geography And Host Use To Genetic Structure In New York Populations Of The Parasitoid Wasp, Aphidius Ervi, Haley Jay Plasman May 2016

Assessing The Contribution Of Geography And Host Use To Genetic Structure In New York Populations Of The Parasitoid Wasp, Aphidius Ervi, Haley Jay Plasman

Dissertations - ALL

Host-associated differentiation (HAD) has been shown to be important in generating genetic differentiation within herbivorous insects, but the applicability of HAD to other parasitic taxonomic groups remains unclear. For example, parasitoid wasps that attack herbivorous insects share many similar life habits with their hosts, suggesting that HAD may also be a prevalent and important mechanism in this group. I tested for the genetic signature of HAD in the parasitoid wasp, Aphidius ervi, that attacks aphids. Aphidius ervi is a biocontrol agent that uses many species of pest aphids including the clover and alfalfa host-races of the pea aphid (Acyrthospihon pisum). …

Ganglioside GM3 synthase is a key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of gangliosides. GM3 synthase deficiency (GSD) causes a complete absence of GM3 and all downstream biosynthetic derivatives. The individuals affected by this disorder manifest severe irritability, intractable seizures and profound intellectual disability. However, we have found that most newborns seem symptom-free for a period of time after birth. In order to further understand the onset of the disease, we investigated the early growth and development of patients with this condition through this study. We compared 37 affected individuals with their normal siblings and revealed that all children with GSD …

The Western Diet's Negative Impact On The Health Of The Pacific Islands., Jessica Ruikka May 2016

The Western Diet's Negative Impact On The Health Of The Pacific Islands., Jessica Ruikka

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

In an already challenging environment, the Western diet has introduced noncommunicable diseases (NCD) such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease to the Pacific Islands (PIC). Without modern medicine, many of these regions, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia are ill equipped to handle the long-term effects of these noncommunicable diseases. A high percentage of the Pacific Island population is obese and overweight; and the Islands are struggling to combat the epidemic. Many programs and proposals have been implemented, such as changes in trade policy, local activism, and government modifications, but there has been no evidence of a decline in noncommunicable diseases. There …

The State Of Tobacco : A Remote Sensing Approach To Understanding Tobacco Crop Production In Kentucky., Laura Krauser May 2016

The State Of Tobacco : A Remote Sensing Approach To Understanding Tobacco Crop Production In Kentucky., Laura Krauser

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Agricultural policy allows for governing bodies to better control the landscape, economy, and security of resources. Because of this power, it is essential for policy and its effects to be thoroughly understood. This study examines the Tobacco Transition Payment Program (TTPP, “tobacco buyout”), in effect from 2005 to 2014, using a mixed methods approach. The TTPP lifted the existing geographic restrictions of tobacco production and deregulated market prices formerly controlled by the government. Kentucky’s economic, social, and agricultural landscapes changed significantly in the wake of this legislation. To explore these changes, this study employs semi-structured interviews and remote sensing analyses …

Redesigning Gfp Reporter System For Utilization In Clostridium Difficile, Laura E. Fitzgerald

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a gram-positive bacterium that comprises part of the healthy human gut microbiome. When it gains sufficient access to peptides, C. difficile flourishes and releases tissue-damaging toxins, which cause inflammation of the colon that can develop into a Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI).10 The Ivey Laboratory believes that the best tactic in preventing CDIs is stopping peptide ingestion, which theoretically could be accomplished by manipulating the oligopeptide permease (App) system.7 In order to verify that altering the App system would successfully impede peptide uptake, first the expression of the app Promoter Region ( …

Evaluation And Extraction Of Natural Antioxidant Products From Extract Of Fenugreek Seed, David Ijoni-Animadu

Theses (Pre-2016)

The presence of Environmental xenobiotic chemicals causes free radicals, which are generated during normal metabolism and the body's exposure to foreign compounds. The human body has several mechanisms to counteract oxidative stress by producing antioxidants which are naturally produced or externally supplied through foods and / or supplements. Antioxidants are chemicals that interact with and neutralize free radicals, thus preventing them from causing damage. Antioxidants are also known as 'free radical scavengers'. Examples of dietary antioxidants are Beta-carotene, Lycopene, Vitamins A, C and E and examples of primary antioxidants, which terminate free radical chain reaction include, phenolic compounds and Flavonoids. …

Risky Business: Tradeoffs Between Nutrition, Toxicity, And Predation By A Specialist Mammalian Herbivore, Jordan D. Nobler

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Animals must balance many risks and rewards when using resources and selecting habitats. Understanding how animals make these choices requires elucidating the functional significance and interactions among habitat features. The criteria an animal uses to determine the functional quality of a resource may differ from those traditionally measured in surveys of habitat quality. Similarly, the relative value of a particular resource may vary with an animal’s physiology or behavior, or the unique combination of the resource’s characteristics. Previous studies have identified a number of specific individual, measurable, habitat parameters that influence habitat selection of a sagebrush specialist, the pygmy rabbit …

Phenotypic Characterization Of Adipose-Specific Vdr Knockout Mice, Joseph D'Angelo

Biological Sciences

Breast cancer is a prominent and lethal disease that currently affects close to three million people in the United States. Each year displays close to 250,000 new cases of breast cancer and around 40,000 deaths in the United States alone. A geographic pattern of breast cancer suggests a higher incidence in more temperate regions. Research has suggested that low Vitamin D levels associated with reduced sun exposure might contribute to increased breast cancer incidence. In recent studies, Vitamin D has been shown to slow the proliferation of breast cancer cells, but the mechanisms involved in vivo are poorly defined. It …
