Health In Hartford: A Community-Based Participatory Research Project Identifying Solutions To Health Inequities, Karen A. D'Angelo May 2016

Health In Hartford: A Community-Based Participatory Research Project Identifying Solutions To Health Inequities, Karen A. D'Angelo

Doctoral Dissertations

Overall poor health status and unfair, disparate health outcomes for vulnerable population groups are of grave concern in the United States. Rooted in unequal access to and the disparate quality of the social determinants of health, health inequities disproportionately affect people of lower socioeconomic status and people of color. Defined as the willingness of people to intervene for the good of the community and associated with positive health outcomes, collective efficacy has the potential to reduce health inequities for urban Americans. Hartford, Connecticut is one urban city which unduly suffers from health inequities.

Maternal, Environmental, And Social Context Predicts Diarrheal Infection Incidence In Young Children In Sundarbans, India, Sohini Mukherjee, Laura M. Glynn

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Diarrheal infection is the third leading cause of childhood mortality in India and is responsible for 13% of all deaths per year in children under 5 years of age (Lakshaminarayan & Jayalakshmy, 2015). The Sundarbans in West Bengal is amongst the poorest regions of India and is the epitome of abject deprivation and the acute struggle against geographical and socioeconomic challenges. The incidence of diarrhea in this region is considerably high; about 42,000 reported cases occur per month, and one in five diarrhea cases are reported as severe (with blood in stool). In addition, 37% of children hospitalized for ailments …

Gluten-Free And Casein-Free Dietary Intervention For Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Avalon Derlacki May 2016

Gluten-Free And Casein-Free Dietary Intervention For Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Avalon Derlacki

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

In the United States, autism spectrum disorders (ASD) had a prevalence of 1 in 150 children in 2000. In the year 2012, the prevalence of ASD in the United States jumped to 1 in 68 children (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Due to the increase in diagnoses of ASD, researchers have sought out different ways to help decrease maladaptive symptoms associated with ASD’s. Many parents of children diagnosed with ASD administer a gluten-free and casein-free (GFCF) diet to their children in hopes of reducing their maladaptive symptoms. The project hypothesis states that if a child under the age …

These storage conditions simulate the sea shipment conditions of imported mandarins from …

Extended Learning Time, Ivette M. Febo May 2016

Extended Learning Time, Ivette M. Febo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Research suggests that regular participation in programs that provide academic and social activities contribute positively to children’s academic and social development (National Education Association, 2004). However, existing literature on teachers’ and parents’ views on extended learning time is limited. A lot of emphasis has been placed on after-school programs for three primary reasons. First, attendance in after-school programs can provide children with supervision during a time when many might be exposed to and engage in more anti-social and destructive behaviors. Second, after-school programs can provide enriching experiences that broaden children’s perspectives and improve their socialization. Third, after-school programs may …

Development Of A Mission-Aligned Campus-Community Partnership Model: The Urban Institute Flu Vaccine Initiative For The Indigent Of Nyc, John M. Conry

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Despite its position as a powerful country which offers the opportunity for state-of-the-art high-quality patient-centered care, many people within the U.S. do not have access to or cannot afford health care. The Urban Institute of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at St. John’s University was successful in developing a community outreach initiative that provided free flu vaccines to an underserved indigent patient population in New York City in an effort to decrease their risk for flu-related morbidity and mortality.

Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of High Fat Diet Removal And Wheel Running In C57bl/6j Mice, Aikaterini Hatzidis May 2016

Physiological And Behavioral Effects Of High Fat Diet Removal And Wheel Running In C57bl/6j Mice, Aikaterini Hatzidis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The possibility of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is determined by a combination of genetic factors and the lifestyle of the individual. Higher risks of T2DM diagnosis occur when individuals are exposed to lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity and high fat diet consumption. Animal models, including mice, are consistently used in laboratory studies to understand T2DM in humans due to genetic and physiological similarities. This study focuses on whether change of diet and increased exercise can reduce obesity and alleviate T2DM symptoms in C57BL/6J (B6) mice. Changes in weight, anxiety-like behaviors, leptin and insulin levels and glucose tolerance …

© 2016 American Chemical Society. Previous characterization of hemophores from Serratia marcescens (HasAs), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (HasAp), and Yersinia pestis (HasAyp) showed that hemin binds between two loops, where it is axially coordinated by H32 and Y75. The Y75 loop is structurally conserved in all three hemophores and harbors conserved ligand Y75. The other loop contains H32 in HasAs and HasAp, but a noncoordinating Q32 in HasAyp. The H32 loop in apo-HasAs and apo-HasAp is in an open conformation, which places H32 about 30 Å from the hemin-binding site. Hence, hemin binding onto the Y75 loop of HasAs or HasAp triggers …

Effects Of A Sleep Hygiene Text-Message Intervention On Sleep In College Students, Christine S. Gipson May 2016

Effects Of A Sleep Hygiene Text-Message Intervention On Sleep In College Students, Christine S. Gipson

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Young adulthood is a time of transition with multiple stressors that may affect healthy lifestyle habits such as sleep. Prolonged sleep disturbances can have harmful health effects along with increased risk for development of chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a text-message intervention on sleep among young adult college students. Using Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), it was hypothesized that a sleep hygiene text-message intervention would increase sleep hygiene knowledge, increase sleep hygiene, improve self-efficacy for sleep hygiene, and improve sleep quality among young adult college students. A randomized control trial (RCT) with …

The Germ Of Death Itself: A Study Of Tuberculosis And Community Education In Ghana, Brittany T. Peterson May 2016

The Germ Of Death Itself: A Study Of Tuberculosis And Community Education In Ghana, Brittany T. Peterson

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

Background: Tuberculosis remains a significant threat to global public health, despite advancements in treatment and detection in recent decades. Treatment regimens are unpleasant and time-consuming, particularly when the disease-causing strain is partially or completely drug-resistant. Approximately one-third of the global population is currently infected with tuberculosis, but the majority of these cases are dormant and non-contagious. These dormant cases are more difficult to diagnose, but if the immune system is compromised, as in the case of HIV/AIDS, the individual will transition to an active and contagious case of tuberculosis. Resistant strains are increasing around the world, making treatment of a …

Growth Of Cyanobacteria Anabaena Variabilis On Jsc-1a, A Martian Regolith Simulant, Stewart Morely May 2016

Growth Of Cyanobacteria Anabaena Variabilis On Jsc-1a, A Martian Regolith Simulant, Stewart Morely

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Mars is a planet. Freezing temperatures, harsh solar, and a lack of water have left the surface of the planet sterile with no hope for even the hardiest of life forms to emerge. However, if Mars was warmer and had an atmosphere; could life emerge? In this project, we study how a martian regolith analog affects the growth of the cyanobacteria Anabaena variabilis. Our results indicate that in appropriate quantities, the martian material may aid growth by providing extra minerals in the growth media, however at higher concentrations these minerals become chemotoxic. We also test whether the martian regolith simulant …

Hospital Quality Improvement: Are Peer Review Immunity, Privilege, And Confidentiality In The Public Interest?, Michael Benson, Jordan Benson, Mark Stein May 2016

Hospital Quality Improvement: Are Peer Review Immunity, Privilege, And Confidentiality In The Public Interest?, Michael Benson, Jordan Benson, Mark Stein

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Participants in the hospital peer review process enjoy enormous protections under federal and state law. We contend that these protections—immunity, evidentiary privilege, and confidentiality—impede quality improvement in health care. As a result of these protections, the current peer review system produces both improper severity and improper leniency. We propose to reform the system by eliminating all federal and state statutory protections for the peer review process. A public process that is open to review and open to challenge by all interested parties will better promote health-care quality.
