Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is essential for disease prevention and health promotion. Emerging evidence suggests other intensities of physical activity (PA), including light-intensity activity (LPA), may also be important, but there has been no rigorous evaluation of the evidence. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the relationships between objectively measured PA (total and all intensities) and health indicators in school-aged children and youth. Online databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies that met the a priori inclusion criteria: population (apparently healthy, aged 5–17 years), intervention/exposure/comparator (volumes, durations, frequencies, intensities, and patterns of objectively measured PA), and outcome (body …

Publications and Research
Background: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) accounted for 67% of new US human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in 2012; however, less than 40% of HIV-positive GBMSM are virally suppressed. Preventing transmission from virally unsuppressed men who have condomless anal sex (CAS) with serodiscordant partners is a public health imperative. New HIV infections in GBMSM are attributed in part to online access to sex partners; therefore, low-cost eHealth interventions are a unique opportunity to reach men where they meet partners.
Objective: To describe the protocol of a randomized controlled trial evaluating whether video-based messaging delivered …

PROBLEM: Weight management of overweight and obese (OWO) African-American females (AAFs) is a poorly defined concept, leading to ineffective treatment of overweight and obesity, prevention of health sequelae, and risk reduction. METHODS: A conceptual model of the phenomenon of weight management in OWO AAFs was developed through dimensional analysis of the literature. Constructs were identified and sorted into the dimensions of perspective, context, conditions, process, and consequences and integrated into an explanatory matrix. FINDINGS: Through dimensional analysis, weight management in OWO AAFs was characterized as a multidimensional concept, defined from the perspective of weight loss in community-dwelling AAFs. Behaviors associated …

The Effects Of Ionizing Radiation And Oxidizing Species On Strains Of Deinococcus Radiodurans Lacking Endogenous Oxidative Protection Methods, Dylan L. Klawuhn
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple strains of Deinococcus radiodurans were transformed, creating knockout mutations in genes responsible for manganese ion transport, manganese and copper/zinc super-oxide dismutase, and bacillithiol synthesis. These mutated strains were then irradiated with ~20,000 Gys. The results showed that the mutated strains had a higher sensitivity to ionizing radiation, those responsible for bacillithiol synthesis having an increase in sensitivity 3000 times more than wild type Deinococcus radiodurans. In addition to radiation the mutated strains were also exposed to paraquat, an oxidizing herbicide. Strains missing manganese super-oxide dismutase showed increased sensitivity.

Facilitating The Release Of Bionutrients From Morinda Citrifolia (Noni) By Cellulase Hydrolysis And Lactic Acid Bacteria Fermentation And Their Effects On Α-Amylase And Α-Glucosidase Activities, Hui-Hung Lee, Li-Jung Yin, Hsueh-Ming Tai, Shann-Tzong Jiang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
For facilitating the release of bionutrients from noni, 6 h of hydrolysis with 100 U/mL cellulase at 50℃ and an additional 48 h of fermentation with Pediococcus pentosaceus BCRC 14053 at 37℃ were performed. Increases in the extraction yields (87.8-607.8 mg/g) and the total phenolic content (2.02-7.45 mg/g) of various extracts were obtained, suggesting that bionutrients were released from noni during hydrolysis or fermentation. In hydrolyzed and/or additionally fermented samples, significant decreases in the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) against α-amylase (10.28-1.61 mg/mL) and α-glucosidase (46.47-3.73 mg/mL) were observed. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry results revealed that the major components with these …

Nutritional Knowledge And Dietary Practices Among Division I Athletes: Do College Athletes Understand And Fulfill Sex Specific Nutritional And Metabolic Requirements?, Martina Loncarica Loncarica
Theses - ALL
ABSTRACT
Objective: This study evaluated and compared male and female college athletes’ dietary habits, their general nutrition knowledge, and understanding of their daily metabolic requirements during training and non-training days. The goal was to 1) determine whether a nutritional gender gap existed between male and female college athletes and 2) assess whether the level of nutritional knowledge of student athletes was generally sufficient to meet their sex- specific dietary needs.
Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to gather dietary data from Syracuse University student athletes. Participants were asked to complete an online survey (Qualtrics Software, Qualtrics.com) approved by the …

Background: The adverse health and equity impacts of transnational corporations’ (TNCs) practices have become central public health concerns as TNCs increasingly dominate global trade and investment and shape national economies. Despite this, methodologies have been lacking with which to study the health equity impacts of individual corporations and thus to inform actions to mitigate or reverse negative and increase positive impacts.
Methods: This paper reports on a framework designed to conduct corporate health impact assessment (CHIA), developed at a meeting held at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in May 2015.
Results: On the basis of the deliberations …

Modeling The Biomechanics And Mechanobiology Of Intervertebral Discs, Xin Gao
Modeling The Biomechanics And Mechanobiology Of Intervertebral Discs, Xin Gao
Open Access Dissertations
The degeneration of lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs) has been implicated as a possible cause of low back pain which affects more than 600 million people worldwide. Abnormal mechanical loading is thought to be a primary etiological factor leading to degenerative changes in the discs. The abnormal mechanical loading could initiate disc degeneration through two pathways: causing the failure of disc structures, and disturbing the balance between cellular anabolic and catabolic activities. The latter one is thought to be the main pathway. However, the mechanism of extracellular mechanotransduction is not fully understood, neither the abnormal mechanical loading is quantified. The objectives …

Exploration Of Chemical And Biological Management Strategies For Diaphorina Citri The Primary Vector Of Candidatus Liberibacter Asiaticus, Gretta Marie Sharp
Biology Theses
Diaphorina citri (Hemipteran: Psyllidae), the Asian citrus psyllid, is a phloem-feeding, invasive species endemic to southern Asia that was first identified in the United States in Florida in 1998. Since introduction, D. citri has spread across the major citrus growing regions of the United States. This is of great concern to the citrus industry because D. citri is the primary vector of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus the causal agent of Haunglongbing (HLB). Haunglongbing is the most economically devastating disease of citrus causing an estimated 8.92 billion dollars lost in revenue and 4.62 billion dollars lost in gross domestic product between 2006-2007 …

Ketone Esters For Treatment Of Angelman Syndrome, Edwin J. Weeber, Stephanie L. Ciarlone, Dominic P. D'Agostino
USF Patents
The invention concerns a method of treating Angelman Syndrome (AS) in a subject, comprising inducing ketosis in the subject by administering a therapeutically effective amount of a ketone ester, such as an R,S-1,3-butanediol acetoacetate ester, wherein administration of the ketone ester elevates the blood ketone level in the subject. Other aspects of the invention include a method of increasing cognitive function and/or motor function in a subject with AS; and a method of decreasing seizures and increasing the latency to seize in a subject with AS.
