Cardiovascular Disease Risk Scores And Novel Risk Factors In Relation To Race And Gender, Johanna Wilson
Cardiovascular Disease Risk Scores And Novel Risk Factors In Relation To Race And Gender, Johanna Wilson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The use of cardiovascular risk scores remains the foundation for risk stratification to guide clinical management. Clinicians have access to several cardiovascular risk scores in practice settings. While having several risk scores with different risk factors may provide more information, it does not imply accuracy of the cardiovascular risk score used to calculate individual patient cardiovascular risk. The objective of this study was to compare the Framingham Risk score, Reynolds Risk scores, and the Pooled Cohort Risk Equation (3 commonly used equations) scores with respect to ability to predict cardiovascular events in a diverse ethnic population. Additionally, the potential predictive …

BACKGROUND: Both men and women are vulnerable to weight gain during the college years, and this phenomenon is linked to an increased risk of several chronic diseases and mortality. Technology represents an attractive medium for the delivery of weight control interventions focused on college students, given its reach and appeal among this population. However, few technology-mediated weight gain prevention interventions have been evaluated for college students. OBJECTIVE: This study examined a new technology-based, social media-facilitated weight gain prevention intervention for college students. METHODS: Undergraduates (n =58) in two sections of a public university course were allocated to either a behavioral …

To investigate large structural clonal mosaicism of chromosome X, we analysed the SNP microarray intensity data of 38,303 women from cancer genome-wide association studies (20,878 cases and 17,425 controls) and detected 124 mosaic X events 4 2 Mb in 97 (0.25%) women. Here we show rates for X-chromosome mosaicism are four times higher than mean autosomal rates; X mosaic events more often include the entire chromosome and participants with X events more likely harbour autosomal mosaic events. X mosaicism frequency increases with age (0.11% in 50-year olds; 0.45% in 75-year olds), as reported for Y and autosomes. Methylation array analyses …

Publications and Research
Generalist parasites exploit multiple host species at the population level, but the individual parasite’s strategy may be either itself a generalist or a specialist pattern of host species use. Here, we studied the relationship between host availability and host use in the individual parasitism patterns of the Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis, a generalist avian obligate brood parasite that parasitizes an extreme range of hosts. Using five microsatellite markers and an 1120-bp fragment of the mtDNA control region, we reconstructed full-sibling groups from 359 cowbird eggs and chicks found in nests of the two most frequent hosts in our study area, …

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
INTRODUCTION:
Childhood obesity disproportionately affects rural populations; therefore, promoting healthy eating among rural children is essential. Teachers are important role models for children and can influence children's eating behaviors through their own behaviors and beliefs about food. This study examined the food-related practices and beliefs of rural elementary and middle school teachers.
METHODS:
Data were used from the SNACZ study, a school- and community-based trial conducted in rural Oregon. Kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers (n=87), teaching students usually aged 5-14 years, from eight rural school districts completed a baseline survey in November 2012 concerning their classroom food practices, eating behaviors at …

This presentation offers activities designed to demystify and empower students in learning two key steps of academic research: compiling bibliographic information and writing evaluative annotations, and reading and synthesizing academic journal articles. Attendees of the presentation will leave with information on the need for and creation of these activities, hear of their application in both one-shot instruction and in credit-bearing environments in and out of the library, and be fully prepared to integrate these activities into their …
Offspring Size-Number Tradeoffs And Food Quality Feedbacks Impact Population Dynamics In A Daphnia-Algae System, Ryan Wenkus
Offspring Size-Number Tradeoffs And Food Quality Feedbacks Impact Population Dynamics In A Daphnia-Algae System, Ryan Wenkus
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Population fluctuations can be affected by a number of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, but few manipulative experiments have been conducted that can isolate these effects in consumer-resource systems. Extrinsic factors such as weather patterns or food availability can impact consumer growth and reproduction. Additionally, intrinsic factors relating to life history can have significant impacts on population growth rates. A fundamental principle of life history theory is that individuals are limited by trade-offs between survival and reproduction, and there are a variety of combinations, given environment and physiological limitations, that should maximize lifetime reproductive output. Reproductive strategies vary between species, but …

BACKGROUND: Local adaptation, the differential success of genotypes in their native versus foreign environment, arises from various evolutionary processes, but the importance of concurrent abiotic and biotic factors as drivers of local adaptation has only recently been investigated. Local adaptation to biotic interactions may be particularly important for plants, as they associate with microbial symbionts that can significantly affect their fitness and may enable rapid evolution. The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is ideal for investigations of local adaptation because it is globally widespread among most plant taxa and can significantly affect plant growth and fitness. Using meta-analysis on 1170 studies …

Policy Analysis: Minimum Wage In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Aaron Kaufman
Policy Analysis: Minimum Wage In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Aaron Kaufman
Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
Oregon’s current minimum wage of $9.25 per hour is unsustainable as it does not provide adequate nutritional resources or housing for full time employees. Additionally, employers of minimum wage workers often rely on social safety net benefits for their workers which effectively subsidize wages. This creates an unnecessary burden on the taxpayer. Oregon Senate Bill 1532 increases the minimum wage incrementally within Portland’s Metropolitan Area to $14.75 in 2022. This wage provides full time minimum wage workers enough income for adequate nutrition and reasonable housing while reducing reliance on social safety net programs.
Voice Your Health -- Determining Elementary School Students Perceived "Hinders" And "Helpers" To Leading A Healthy Lifestyle, Mindy Stewart
Voice Your Health -- Determining Elementary School Students Perceived "Hinders" And "Helpers" To Leading A Healthy Lifestyle, Mindy Stewart
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Research demonstrates that the quality of a person’s diet as well as the level of physical activity greatly influences the likelihood of that person being overweight. Healthful life habits are formed during childhood. Childhood overweight and obesity increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, and respiratory problems. Due to the serious problems associated with these disease states, it is critical to prevent or decrease the rate of childhood overweight and obesity. This project sought to discover the barriers children perceive are preventing them from being healthy and what they believe is healthy. The goal of the project was to …
Initiating Self-Management Of Lifestyle-Related Chronic Disease Resulting From Unhealthy Weight: Identifying Thoughts And Actions Through Phenomenology, Celeste Lee
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
A heuristic phenomenological approach drew out participants identified factors that initiated self-management of unhealthy weight-related chronic diseases; resulting in severity attenuation of current chronic disease(s) and lowered risk of comorbidity development. Prior to this study, there have been three omissions relating to older individuals who have unhealthy weight-related chronic diseases. First, direct first-person narratives of the process to self-management have not been reported. Second, the self-identification of the initiating factors leading to self-management has not been found in scholarly literature. Finally, cognitive reflection, an activity that results in paradigmatic shifts in adult behaviors has not been discussed from the first-person …

Coping with Water Scarcity in River Basins Worldwide: Lessons Learned from Shared Experiences (Martz Summer Conference, June 9-10)
Water scarcity is increasingly dominating headlines throughout the world. In the southwestern USA, the looming water shortages on the Colorado River system and the unprecedented drought in California are garnering the greatest attention. Similar stories of scarcity and crisis can be found across the globe, suggesting an opportunity for sharing lessons and innovations. For example, the Colorado River and Australia's Murray-Darling Basin likely can share many lessons, as both systems were over-allocated, feature multiple jurisdictions, face similar climatic risks and drought stresses, and struggle to balance human demands with environmental needs. In this conference we cast our net broadly, exploring …

Food Security, Climate Change, And Poverty Reduction In Rural Nepal, Wenmei Guo
Food Security, Climate Change, And Poverty Reduction In Rural Nepal, Wenmei Guo
Economics ETDs
Smallholder famers in the developing countries, especially those who mainly depend on rain-fed agriculture, are vulnerable and sensitive to climate change because such agricultural cultivators largely depend on traditional farming techniques, and are less capable of coping with climate change (Krishnamurthy et al., 2013). Like many other developing countries, agricultural production in Nepal is largely dependent on rainfall, which causes high sensitivity to climate change for household food security. This dissertation, which is composed of three main studies, examines how serious climate change affects household food security, as well as the potential strategies households could adopt to cope with food …

Water usage is governed through a variety of mechanisms, including government administration and market tools. In 2006-2008 Barcelona’s region, a water scarce area, suffered a drought comparable to the one faced today by the US West. This article surveys a variety of techniques which were or could have been used to address these scarcity challenges. Spanish water regulations established water markets in 1999 but neither the design, nor its implementation were optimal. In addition to the design and implementation flaws, the response to the 2006-2008 drought crisis shows how emergency measures highjack water markets as a viable solution to water …
