The Effects Of Estrogen (E2), Bisphenol A (Bpa), Bisphenol S (Bps), And Bisphenol F (Bpf) On The Proliferation Of Mcf-7 Cells, Colleen Leahy Jul 2016

The Effects Of Estrogen (E2), Bisphenol A (Bpa), Bisphenol S (Bps), And Bisphenol F (Bpf) On The Proliferation Of Mcf-7 Cells, Colleen Leahy

Biology Summer Fellows

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are chemicals that disturb the endocrine system and exhibit adverse effects throughout the body. EDCs exert their effects by displaying hormone-like activity and can act as agonists or antagonists to normal hormonal function. Those EDCs that disturb the activity of estrogen are of particular interest. Estrogen, also known as 17β-estradiol, is a steroid hormone responsible for the development of the female sexual organs, secondary sexual characteristics, bone development and maintenance, and cardiovascular development. It has also been shown to play a role in the growth of certain breast cancers. Endocrine disrupting compounds that are structurally similar …

‘‘Covert Coping’’ In Extreme Environments: Insights From South African Submarines, Charles H. Van Wijk, Vittorio Dalla Cia Jul 2016

‘‘Covert Coping’’ In Extreme Environments: Insights From South African Submarines, Charles H. Van Wijk, Vittorio Dalla Cia

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Submariners are a group of people who live and work in enclosed habitats. In this confined environment, they need to balance the emotional needs of individuals with the resources of the group, to ensure effective coping for all. This study explored the mechanisms of maintaining this balance.

Observations and a self-report measure (a modified Brief COPE) were used to describe the coping of submariners during deployment. Findings from the thematic analysis and self-report instrument are briefly described. An apparent contrast between the qualitative observations and quantitative data was noted, and when closely examined reveal two mechanisms whereby submariners managed their …

A Case Study That Examines The Community School Model In Elementary School Settings In West Tennessee, Lawanda Michelle Clark Jul 2016

A Case Study That Examines The Community School Model In Elementary School Settings In West Tennessee, Lawanda Michelle Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

If schools are to succeed, children must be provided with more than a school can accomplish alone (Barbour et al., 2010). The need to involve community in the education process to offer services that make students successful and to have these services within the school building are all critical aspects of the community school model (Dryfoos, 1994; Dryfoos et al., 2005; Kronick, 2002, 2005). Literature suggest that school and community collaboration is not a foreign concept. Parents and neighborhoods working together to enhance academics and strengthen the community can be traced back to the reform era of the early twentieth …

Demographic Characteristics Influencing Religious Tourism Behaviour: Evidence Form A Central-Eastern-European Country, Anna Irimias, Ariel Mitev, Gabor Michalko Jul 2016

Demographic Characteristics Influencing Religious Tourism Behaviour: Evidence Form A Central-Eastern-European Country, Anna Irimias, Ariel Mitev, Gabor Michalko

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Although religious tourism and pilgrimage have been widely studied there is very limited research that explores the peculiarities in attitude and behaviour among tourists with different demographic factors. The present exploratory study enhances the discussion on perception of religious tourism behaviour. Specifically, eleven statements on attitude and behaviour were explored among 345 Hungarians with different socio-demographic backgrounds. The results show that there are significant variations between senior and young travellers: seniors see as important, the educational purposes and feelings of national identity related to sacred sites while these are less motivating for the young. The frequency of participating in religious …

Development Of A Capacity Building Program For Village Health Volunteers To Support Self-Management In A High Risk Population For Diabetes In A Rural Community In Northeast Thailand, Pakinee Srisarakham, Kwanjai Amnatsatsue, Patcharaporn Kerdmongkol, Prasit Leerapan

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

Similar to other parts of the world, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Asia-Pacific Region has rapidly increased during the last few decades. The purposes of this pilot study were to determine the feasibility and the effects of a capacity building program for Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) to support self-management in a T2DM high risk population from a rural subdistrict in Northeast Thailand. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using surveys, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed and used to develop a 12-week capacity building program for VHVs. This program was then …

Defining Abdominal Obesity As A Risk Factor For Coronary Heart Disease In The Us Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos (Hchs/Sol), Diana A. Chirinos Medina

Open Access Dissertations

It is now well established that pronounced differences exist in prevalence of abdominal obesity across gender and ethnicity. Hispanic/Latinos, in particular, have been shown to have markedly distinct prevalence when compared to other ethnic populations around the world. Various organizations have highlighted the need to examine whether overall abdominal obesity cut points are appropriate for the use in this ethnic minority, particular highlighting the need of research among Hispanic/Latino residing in Western countries. This study used data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), the largest study of Hispanic/Latinos in the US, to: (1) establish optimal definitions for …

Fewer Than Half Of Wic-Eligible Families Receive Wic Benefits, Kristin Smith Jul 2016

Fewer Than Half Of Wic-Eligible Families Receive Wic Benefits, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

Research has shown that the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a successful and cost-effective program. Numerous studies find that WIC participation improves pre- and postnatal health outcomes; families’ overall nutrition; access to prenatal care, health care for children, and immunizations; and children’s cognitive development and academic achievement. Despite these important benefits, author Kristin Smith--using data from the 2015 Current Population Survey---reports that fewer than half of WIC income-eligible families with young children received WIC nutrition benefits in 2014. Among eligible families, receipt of WIC benefits was more likely among families in which the head …

Health Costs Of Reproduction Are Minimal Despite High Fertility, Mortality And Subsistence Lifestyle, Michael Gurven, Megan Costa, Ben Trumble, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, Daniel Eid Rodriguez, Paul L. Hooper, Hillard Kaplan Jul 2016

Health Costs Of Reproduction Are Minimal Despite High Fertility, Mortality And Subsistence Lifestyle, Michael Gurven, Megan Costa, Ben Trumble, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, Daniel Eid Rodriguez, Paul L. Hooper, Hillard Kaplan

ESI Publications

Women exhibit greater morbidity than men despite higher life expectancy. An evolutionary life history framework predicts that energy invested in reproduction trades-off against investments in maintenance and survival. Direct costs of reproduction may therefore contribute to higher morbidity, especially for women given their greater direct energetic contributions to reproduction. We explore multiple indicators of somatic condition among Tsimane forager-horticulturalist women (Total Fertility Rate = 9.1; n = 592 aged 15–44 years, n = 277 aged 45+). We test whether cumulative live births and the pace of reproduction are associated with nutritional status and immune function using longitudinal data spanning 10 …

Animals Are Agents, Linda A.W. Brakel Jul 2016

Animals Are Agents, Linda A.W. Brakel

Animal Sentience

Mark Rowlands’s (2016) target article invites us to consider individuals in a broad subset of the non-human animal world as genuine persons. His account features animals reacting to salient environmental stimuli as Gibsonian affordances, which is indicative of “pre-reflective self-awareness.” He holds that such pre-reflective self-awareness is both “immune to error through misidentification” (Shoemaker, 1968) and a necessary precursor to reflective consciousness and personhood. I agree. In this commentary I hope to extend Rowlands’s work with a view in which agency is an even more fundamental precursor and one can (and should) consider individuals throughout the entire animal kingdom as …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Monday, July 25, 2016:

Purpose: Minority children in the United States (U.S.) are disproportionately affected by overweight and obesity. According to the Youth at Risk of Decreased Physical Activity Survey, minority preadolescent and adolescent girls of low socioeconomic status are at increased risk for obesity due to insufficient physical activity. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the physical activity levels of Adolescent females in an urban school environment and their perceived barriers to exercise. In the U.S. there has been a decrease in the overall obesity rates among children, however obesity among adolescents, …

Three Essays On Households Consumption Patterns And Labeling, Madiha Zaffou Jul 2016

Three Essays On Households Consumption Patterns And Labeling, Madiha Zaffou

Doctoral Dissertations

The difference in product attributes presented by different labels represents an important factor for consumers when making a purchase decision. Research has shown that a greater variety of options can cater to a wider range of tastes and preferences (Lancaster 1990). That is, with different product attributes, the quality of the product, as perceived by consumers, increases. However, providing consumers with more information on the product’s attributes does not necessarily imply a direct effect on their preference ordering. Other emotional triggers may drive the purchase decision and can be hard for the researcher to capture.

The current dissertation continues a …

Japanese Small Type Coastal Whaling, Sue Fisher Jul 2016

Japanese Small Type Coastal Whaling, Sue Fisher

Commercial Whaling Collection

2016 marks the 70th anniversary of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW) as well as the 30th anniversary of the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling. It also marks three decades of effort by Japan to overturn this ban. Its strategy to circumvent the moratorium by issuing permits to kill protected whales for scientific research is famous—even the subject of a 2014 lawsuit at the International Court of Justice. Less well known is Japan’s strategy to overturn the ban by persuading the Commission to authorize a category of commercial whaling known as Small Type Coastal …

Climate change is affecting medicinal plants around the world and could ultimately lead to losses of some key species, in particular species endemic to a region and causing plants to migrate to new ranges. As the situation unfolds, climate change may become a pressing issue for the herbal community, affecting medicinal plant supply chains with varying requirements for plant cultivation, resource management in the wild, harvesting, processing, and importantly marketing.

To Tackle The Housing Crisis, We Need To Talk About Ownership, Lorcan Sirr Jul 2016

To Tackle The Housing Crisis, We Need To Talk About Ownership, Lorcan Sirr

Media

The rights and obligations that go with property ownership are important issues in any country trying to control its housing stock, resolve a housing crisis or create a functioning system. The concept of ownership is not clear cut: there is common ownership, as seen on the pampas and prairies, and in the outback; shared ownership, in India and China; temporal ownership, in medieval France and now Catalonia; and subservient ownership, where the Earth belongs only to its creator.

Leadership Of Humanitarian Organizations Working In Less Developed Countries: A Best Practices Analysis, John Oliphant Jul 2016

Leadership Of Humanitarian Organizations Working In Less Developed Countries: A Best Practices Analysis, John Oliphant

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Many people from the developed world, who intend to help the poor in less developed countries, actually end up doing harm by creating more dependence, demonstrating ignorance of the local culture, not understanding the importance of long-term relationships, and offering solutions to problems without ever getting input and buy-in from those they intend to help. There is very little published research in scholarly journals regarding how those from the developed world can best approach humanitarian relief and development work in the developing world. In this qualitative analysis using a collective case study design, humanitarian relief and development organizational leaders share …
