Sources Of Strength: An Evidence-Based Student-Led Suicide Prevention Program, Tammi Clarke, Cheryl Benefield

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Sources of Strength is designed to provide both awareness and early prevention as well as to support intervention systems already in place. Although suicide prevention is the primary goal, this program has shown to reduce violence and bullying as well. Through the use of peer leaders, Sources of Strength empowers students to spread hope, help and strength messages utilizing the influence of friendship networks and positive norming. The formula of one part fun, one part sharing and one part planning builds momentum and sustains interest in this peer leader program that is one of the most heavily researched.

Two-Phase Transport In Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Kazuya Tajiri Nov 2016

Two-Phase Transport In Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Kazuya Tajiri

TechTalks

In Multiscale Transport Process Laboratory our research is focused on the experimental and computational analysis of transport phenomena in electrochemical devices and propulsion systems. In this talk our research activity on proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for automotive application will be explained. Water management is one of the most critical issues in PEMFCs. The water generated in catalyst layer as a product of the electrochemical reaction needs to be removed through porous media by diffusion if it’s vapor, or by capillarity in case of liquid. In flow channels, the liquid water is removed primarily by inertial force of the …

Numerical Methods For Partial Differential Equations, Yang Yang Nov 2016

Numerical Methods For Partial Differential Equations, Yang Yang

TechTalks

Many physical phenomena can be modeled by partial differential equations, such as Euler equations and Navier–Stokes equations. However, most cases, we cannot find the exact solutions, hence numerical methods are needed to approximate them. In my work, I use discontinuous Galerkin methods (a kind of finite element method) and finite volume methods to solve hyperbolic and parabolic equations—especially for problems with strong singularities, such as delta-functions. Moreover, some of the physical bounds will be preserved, such as the positivity of the density, maximum-principle of the velocity etc. Some of the problems I am working on include compressible gas dynamics, miscible …

This collection of fictional writing is intended for young adults. Both works feature female protagonists encountering supernatural element and could be categorized as magical realism, in that they incorporate fantastic or mythical elements in otherwise realistic fiction. “Teeth” is a short story that covers an issue that is prevalent amongst young adults and has been heavily discussed in the media. A reimagining of the Greek mythological tale of Medusa, the protagonist undergoes a transformation after a brutal rape that leaves her physically changed and what some would consider a monster. The Political Economy: Political Attitudes And Economic Behavior, Ellen M. Key, Kathleen M. Donovan Nov 2016

The Political Economy: Political Attitudes And Economic Behavior, Ellen M. Key, Kathleen M. Donovan

Political Science Faculty/Staff Publications

It has long been recognized that voters bring their political behaviors in line with economic assessments. Recent work, however, suggests that citizens also engage in economic behaviors that align with their confidence—or lack thereof—in the political system. This alignment can happen consciously or, as we suggest, unconsciously, in the same way that positivity carries over to other behaviors on a micro-level. Using monthly time series data from 1978 to 2008, we contribute further evidence of this relationship by demonstrating that political confidence affects consumer behavior at the aggregate level over time. Our analyses employ measures more closely tied to the …

Class Roots: The Genesis Of The Ontario Class Proceedings Act, 1966 - 1993, Suzanne Erica Chiodo

LLM Theses

Nearly 25 years since its passage, the Ontario Class Proceedings Act has become one of the most frequently debated procedural mechanisms of its kind. The CPA came about following the release of the Attorney Generals Advisory Committee (AGAC) Report in 1990. None of the current narratives explain how this Report pulled together so many divergent interests where previous attempts had failed. My thesis answers this question with reference to the historical sources and the legal, political and social changes that took place throughout this period.

This thesis also highlights the unique nature of the AGAC consultation process, which saw the …

What We Know About The Public’S Level Of Concern For Farm Animal Welfare In Food Production In Developed Countries, Amelia Cornish, David Raubenheimer, Paul Mcgreevy Nov 2016

What We Know About The Public’S Level Of Concern For Farm Animal Welfare In Food Production In Developed Countries, Amelia Cornish, David Raubenheimer, Paul Mcgreevy

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Population growth and rising consumption of meat, dairy, eggs and fish are forcing the world to face the intersecting challenges of how to sustainably feed a population expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050, while also controlling the impact of food production on the planet, on people and on animals. This review acknowledges the absence of a globally accepted definition of animal welfare and then explores the literature regarding different levels of concern for animal welfare in food production by such stakeholders as veterinarians, farmers, and the general public. It focuses on the evidence that the general public’s level of …

Pld-Specific Small-Molecule Inhibitors Decrease Tumor-Associated Macrophages And Neutrophils Infiltration In Breast Tumors And Lung And Liver Metastases, Karen M. Henkels, Naveen Reddy Muppani, Julian Gomez-Cambronero Nov 2016

Pld-Specific Small-Molecule Inhibitors Decrease Tumor-Associated Macrophages And Neutrophils Infiltration In Breast Tumors And Lung And Liver Metastases, Karen M. Henkels, Naveen Reddy Muppani, Julian Gomez-Cambronero

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Phospholipase D-2 (PLD2) has a key role in breast cancer formation and metastasis formation with PLD small inhibitors reducing primary tumor growth. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of targeting PLD on the tumor microenvironment. We provide evidence about the beneficial effect of PLD inhibitors [FIPI (dual PLD1/PLD2) or VU0155072-2 (PLD2 inhibitor)] on avoiding infiltration of tumor-helping macrophages and neutrophils. Tumor growth and metastasis within the primary tumors had low (<20% over controls) PLD enzyme activity. Unexpectedly, we found that the inhibitors also affected PLD2 gene expression and protein albeit at a lesser extent. The later could indicate that targeting both the actual PLD enzyme and its activity could be beneficial for potential cancer treatments in vivo. F4/80 and Ly6G staining of macrophages and neutrophils, respectively, and Arg1 staining data were consistent with M2 and N2 polarization. NOS2 staining increased in xenotransplants …

The Anchor, Volume 130.11: November 16, 2016, Hope College

The Anchor: 2016

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
