Shut Up And Listen: How We Used Social Listening To Connect With Students And Build A Community, Maria Atilano Nov 2016

Shut Up And Listen: How We Used Social Listening To Connect With Students And Build A Community, Maria Atilano

Library Presentations & Publications

In social media, content creation is often king. The University of North Florida’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library has refocused its efforts away from original content in an effort to focus on listening and engagement. This practice has led the Carpenter Library to build a reliable, friendly, and helpful online community that has inspired other departments on campus to do the same. By monitoring keywords, hashtags, and geotags, library staff has kept tabs on what students have to say about the library’s various services, resources, spaces, employees, and more. Over the past 2 years, follower counts on Facebook and Twitter have …

Is It Scholarly? A Lesson Plan For Collaborative Chemistry Information Literacy, Barbara C. Harvey

Books and Contributions to Books

This chapter describes a lesson plan that incorporates information literacy into an introductory chemistry course. The learning outcomes of the activity include becoming familiar with the peer-review process, knowing how to locate original research articles based on “clues” in a general news article, and differentiating between popular and scholarly periodicals. Students work in small groups in a collaborative classroom setting. The activities of the lesson plan are mapped to the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. The lesson plan is supported by a literature review outlining the importance of collaborative, active learning in STEM courses, and highlights the correlation …

The Effects Of Sector Reforms On The Productivity Of Greek Banks: A Step-By-Step Analysis Of The Pre-Euro Era, P Tziogkidis, K Matthews, D Philippas

Plymouth Business School

The paper analyses the effects on the productivity of Greek commercial banks of sector regulatory reforms in the pre-Euro era, using the Global Malmquist Index. In a bootstrap Data Envelopment Analysis framework, we propose an alternative to smoothing that utilises the Pearson system random number generator, offering greater flexibility in the choice of the fitting distribution. In the context of a step-by-step approach, we demonstrate the contribution of deregulatory commercial freedoms to greater productivity and the negative effect of prudential controls. Our findings offer insights into the current state of the Greek banking sector, suggesting that the imposition of additional …

Presented at the Lessons and Legacies conference on Holocaust Studies in November 2016, these posters document a year-long freshman FOCUS seminar held at Washington University in St. Louis in 2015-2016 that aimed to give incoming college students a sophisticated understanding of the causes, dynamics, representation, and memory of the Nazi genocide. Created and co-taught by Anika Walke and Erin McGlothlin, this intensive academic engagement featured two semesters of coursework focusing on the history and the literary and filmic representation of the Holocaust and a twelve-day trip to Germany, Poland and Lithuania. The group visited important Holocaust-related sites to deepen their …

Microbial Enzyme Production Using Lignocellulosic Food Industry Wastes As Feedstock: A Review, Amit Jaiswal, Rajeev Ravindran Nov 2016

Microbial Enzyme Production Using Lignocellulosic Food Industry Wastes As Feedstock: A Review, Amit Jaiswal, Rajeev Ravindran

Articles

Enzymes are of great importance in the industry due to their substrate and product specificity, moderate reaction conditions, minimal by-product formation and high yield. They are important ingredients in several products and production processes. Up to 30% of the total production cost of enzymes is attributed to the raw materials costs. The food industry expels copious amounts of processing waste annually, which is mostlylignocellulosicin nature. Upon proper treatment, lignocellulosecan replace conventional carbon sources in media preparations for industrial microbial processes, such as enzyme production. However, wild strains of microorganisms that produce industrially important enzymes show low yield and cannot thrive on …

Hydrolytic And Nonhydrolytic Sol-Gel Zirconia-, Titania-, And Niobia-Based Capillary Microextraction Coatings For The Preconcentration And Hplc Analysis Of Catecholamine Neurotransmitters And Phosphorylated Peptides, Abdullah Awadh Alhendal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sample preparation is the most error-prone step in chemical analysis. A great deal of efforts has been made to develop efficient techniques and protocols for sample preparation to accomplish important goals such as miniaturization and implementation of green analytical methodologies. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has successfully eliminated the use of hazardous organic solvents in extraction sampling, sample preparation, preconcentration and sample introduction to the analytical instrument in an effective manner. Ensuring thermal- and solvent-instability of traditional SPME extraction phases represented one of their main drawbacks. This was solved by the introduction of sol-gel SPME phases characterized by enhanced thermal-, solvent-, and …

Everything Is Awesome: Teaming Up With Students For Library Outreach, Raymundo Andrade, John Jackson Nov 2016

Everything Is Awesome: Teaming Up With Students For Library Outreach, Raymundo Andrade, John Jackson

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Successful library outreach at Loyola Marymount University would be impossible without students. Whether it’s designing an event poster, conducting community tours, spreading information via word-of-mouth, or creating content for social media, students are involved at every level of our programming and outreach efforts. This presentation will explore some of the successes (and failures) of integrating students as employees and volunteers to help promote the college library. By trusting students to carry the message of the library into the campus community, this presentation will illustrate how outreach teams can develop more efficient, organic, and creative marketing strategies.

The Federal Circuit’s ruling that the § 2(a) disparagement provision is unconstitutional, if upheld, could allow for numerous provisions of the Trademark Act to be overturned, dismantling the modern trademark system. The trademark system is premised on evaluating speech and making content-based determinations. Granting a trademark registration requires content-based determinations, though not viewpoint-based, as words are evaluated independent of applicants’ individual viewpoints. In no way does the refusal to register a trademark prevent its use or diminish public debate. Rather than facilitating public debate, a trademark registration is a government-issued document that makes it easier for its owner to suppress …

The Role Of Diversity Of Academic Major In Influencing Group And Individual Creativity, Xiaochen Liu Nov 2016

The Role Of Diversity Of Academic Major In Influencing Group And Individual Creativity, Xiaochen Liu

Master's Theses

This study examined, on a preliminary basis, the role of diversity of academic major in influencing individual and group divergent thinking. Prior studies on diversity provide evidence that working with diverse individuals can make groups more productive in generating creative ideas. Diversity of academic major is an important element of group diversity that has not been sufficiently studied. This study provided direction for future research to help us understand the ways that diversity may influence creative thinking as well as enrich the school curriculum. A total of 56 graduate students from University of Connecticut were recruited to study this issue. …

A Review Of Evolution, Behavior, And Vision With An Experimental Evolution Study On Color Vision In Drosophila Melanogaster, Mellissa Ann Marcus Nov 2016

A Review Of Evolution, Behavior, And Vision With An Experimental Evolution Study On Color Vision In Drosophila Melanogaster, Mellissa Ann Marcus

Theses

The first chapter of this thesis is to take a piece by piece look at the factors that contributed to the experimental evolution study that will be discussed in Chapter 2. Behavior, how that can affect experimental studies, and how biases can affect sensory systems and preference in subject species. Specifically visual sensory systems are described in detail, from the possible evolutionary histories, to major components that contribute to eye structure, form, and/or abilities. We discuss how to define color vision, and what are the prerequisites for color vision in species.
