A Bio-Wicking System To Mitigate Capillary Water In Base Course, Chuang Lin, Xiong Zhang Nov 2016

A Bio-Wicking System To Mitigate Capillary Water In Base Course, Chuang Lin, Xiong Zhang

CESTiCC Project Reports

Water within pavement layers is the major cause of pavement deteriorations. High water content results in significant reduction in soil’s resilient behavior and increase in permanent deformation. Conventional drainage systems can only drain gravity water but not capillary water. Both preliminary lab and field tests have proven the drainage efficiency of a newly developed H2Ri geotextile with wicking fabrics. This bio-wicking system aims at resolving the potential issues that the original design may encounter: (1) H2Ri ultraviolet degradation, (2) H2Ri mechanical failure, (3) loss of drainage function under high suction, and (4) clogging and salt concentration. Both elemental level and …

Fluctuating Temperatures Alter Environmental Pathogen Transmission In A Daphnia–Pathogen System, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake Nov 2016

Fluctuating Temperatures Alter Environmental Pathogen Transmission In A Daphnia–Pathogen System, Tad Dallas, John M. Drake

Faculty Publications

Environmental conditions are rarely constant, but instead vary spatially and temporally. This variation influences ecological interactions and epidemiological dynamics, yet most experimental studies examine interactions under constant conditions. We examined the effects of variability in temperature on the host–pathogen relationship between an aquatic zooplankton host (Daphnia laevis) and an environmentally transmitted fungal pathogen (Metschnikowia bicuspidata). We manipulated temperature variability by exposing all populations to mean temperatures of 20°C for the length of the experiments, but introducing periods of 1, 2, and 4 hr each day where the populations were exposed to 28°C followed by periods of …

Gene Expression Profiling And The Role Of Hsf1 In Ovarian Cancer In 3d Spheroid Models, Trillitye Paullin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer, with over 200,000 women diagnosed each year and over half of those cases leading to death. These poor statistics are related to a lack of early symptoms and inadequate screening techniques. This results in the cancer going undetected until later stages when the tumor has metastasized through a process that requires the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). In lieu of traditional monolayer cell culture, EMT and cancer progression in general is best characterized through the use of 3D spheroid models. In this study, we examine gene expression changes through microarray analysis in …

The Impact Of Criminal Justice Interventions And Social Policies On Family Violence: Theory And Evidence, Sianne Diana Vijay Nov 2016

The Impact Of Criminal Justice Interventions And Social Policies On Family Violence: Theory And Evidence, Sianne Diana Vijay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 2014, the Child Protective Services received 3.6 million referrals alleging child abuse and neglect, of which, 702,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect and an estimated 1,580 children died due to maltreatment. In addition to this appalling toll, the welfare effects of child victimization are substantial. Evidence suggests that compared to demographically similar adults who were non-victims, adults with documented histories of maltreatment are more likely to engage in criminal behavior; have adverse mental and physical health problems such as depression, addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder; and have lower levels of education and earnings. These essays contribute toward …

Prevalence Of Weight Bias In Health Related Majors At The University Of Memphis, Emily E. Beatty Nov 2016

Prevalence Of Weight Bias In Health Related Majors At The University Of Memphis, Emily E. Beatty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Background: Studies have assessed weight bias among pre-health professionals, but no experimental research has tested the difference in weight bias between freshmen and senior pre-health professionals. Such studies are needed to examine if a difference exists that could impact future treatment and health evaluations. Objective: This study assessed the prevalence of weight bias in freshmen and senior undergraduate students in health care majors. Methods: Twenty-nine participants were randomized to read one of four patient profiles, which varied in sex and weight characteristics. Participants evaluated their patient's health status, treatment participation, and answered questions from the Fat Phobia Scale, Marlowe Crowne's Social Desirability …

What Caused The Failure Of The Egyptian Revolution?, Jumana Midani Nov 2016

What Caused The Failure Of The Egyptian Revolution?, Jumana Midani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Why did the Egyptian Revolution fail after President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown and after a new president, Mohammed Morsi, was democratically elected for the first time in Egypt? Egyptian revolutionaries were able to depose a dictator that ruled them for three decades, but were unable to achieve their goals in making any political, social or economic improvements in their country. The rule of President Morsi did not last for more than one year. He was subsequently ousted, and members from the previous Mubarak regime returned to power and resumed autocratic rule in the same manner as before. This thesis explains …
