Comparing The Academic Word List With The Academic Vocabulary List: Analyses Of Frequency And Performance Of English Language Learners, K. James Hartshorn, Judson M. Hart Jan 2016

Comparing The Academic Word List With The Academic Vocabulary List: Analyses Of Frequency And Performance Of English Language Learners, K. James Hartshorn, Judson M. Hart

Faculty Publications

Although use of the Academic Word List (AWL) has been successful and extensive in English as a second language (ESL) materials development and pedagogy (Coxhead 2000, 2011), some scholars have raised concerns about possible flaws. In an effort to overcome limitations, Gardner and Davies (2014) have presented a "new Academic Vocabulary List" (AVL). While their description suggests a number of potential advantages of the AVL over the AWL, these lists have yet to undergo ecologically valid comparisons based on actual ESL learner performance. Thus, this study compares the AWL with the AVL in an effort to identify some of the …

The Effectiveness Of A Computer-Based Program On The Reading Performance Of Fourth-Grade Students, Latonya L. Cooper Jan 2016

The Effectiveness Of A Computer-Based Program On The Reading Performance Of Fourth-Grade Students, Latonya L. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this applied dissertation was to determine whether a reading intervention of a computer-based program would increase the reading comprehension and vocabulary skills of students in fourth grade in a Title I elementary school. Although the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) covers various federal education programs, the law’s requirements for testing, accountability, and school improvement receive the most attention. NCLB requires states to test students in reading and mathematics annually in Grades 3-8 and once in Grades 10-12. Schools must test students in science once in Grades 3-5, 6-8, and 10-12. Individual schools, school districts, and states …

Effects Of A Music Literacy Integration Intervention On Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Proactive Attitudes Toward Music Integration In Classroom Instruction, Mary Louise Keyloun Cruz Jan 2016

Effects Of A Music Literacy Integration Intervention On Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Proactive Attitudes Toward Music Integration In Classroom Instruction, Mary Louise Keyloun Cruz

Theses and Dissertations

With the adoption of the common core state standards, pressure to raise the achievement of young learners was intense. Classroom teachers were scrutinized to teach lessons with high levels of thinking and rigor. Teachers were inclined to eliminate or ignore artsenriched lessons that would benefit students. The reason for this action was associated with the efficacy of the classroom teacher toward music integration in literacy curriculum. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of the Music Literacy Integration Intervention (MLII) on the self-efficacy and proactiveness of teachers at a small elementary school in Florida toward integration of …

Legislation's Culture, Richard K. Neumann Jr. Jan 2016

Legislation's Culture, Richard K. Neumann Jr.

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

American statutes can seem like labyrinthine mazes when compared to some countries’ legislation. French codes are admired for their intellectual elegance and clarity. Novelists and poets (Stendhal, Valéry) have considered the Code civil to be literature. Swedish legislation might be based on empirical research into problems the legislation is intended to remedy, and the drafting style, though modern today, is descended from an oral tradition of poetic narrative.

Comparing these legislative cultures with our own reveals that the main problem with American legislation is not too many words. It is too many ideas — a high ratio of concepts per …

Smart Fog Computing Interface For Healthcare Domain Applications, Admir Monteiro Jan 2016

Smart Fog Computing Interface For Healthcare Domain Applications, Admir Monteiro

Open Access Master's Theses

Technology is advancing tremendously in this day and age where more and more devices are being deployed in the market of digital devices; so much so that the market is being oversaturated with many different kinds of digital devices to simplify our everyday needs in life. This advancement can have negative consequences, however, there may also be benefits that stem from this technological advancement- especially in healthcare.

One possible benefit is to utilize the device’s capabilities to give real time feedback to people with medical diagnoses. Furthermore, that device could be connected to a stream of other devices to have …

Web Based Bioinformatics Tool For Contributing Content To The Anti-Microbial Peptide Editable Database, Abraham Herrera Jan 2016

Web Based Bioinformatics Tool For Contributing Content To The Anti-Microbial Peptide Editable Database, Abraham Herrera

Open Access Master's Theses

The goal of the work described in this thesis is to improve the software tool used to extract relevant data from an existing larger database, the Protein Data Bank (PDB), in order to populate the newly designed AMPed database that has been developed by Professor Lenore Martin's microbial peptide research group at URI. However, not all data from the PDB site can be automatically loaded into the AMPed database. Thus, this work describes a user-friendly secure web-based tool for manually transferring, editing, and contributing structural and anti-microbial experimental data generated by research labs around the globe into the AMPed.

Once …

The Need For Annotated Corpora From Legal Documents, And For (Human) Protocols For Creating Them: The Attribution Problem, Vern R. Walker Jan 2016

The Need For Annotated Corpora From Legal Documents, And For (Human) Protocols For Creating Them: The Attribution Problem, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This paper argues that in order to make progress today in automating argumentation mining from legal documents, we have a critical need for two things. First, we need a sufficient supply of manually annotated corpora, as well as theoretical and experimental evidence that those annotated data are accurate. Second, we need protocols for effectively training people to perform the tasks and sub-tasks required to create those annotations. Such protocols are necessary not only for a team approach to annotation and for quality assurance of the finished annotations, but also for developing and testing software to assist humans in the process …

The Philosophy Of Mathematics: A Study Of Indispensability And Inconsistency, Hannah C. Thornhill Jan 2016

The Philosophy Of Mathematics: A Study Of Indispensability And Inconsistency, Hannah C. Thornhill

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines possible philosophies to account for the practice of mathematics, exploring the metaphysical, ontological, and epistemological outcomes of each possible theory. Through a study of the two most probable ideas, mathematical platonism and fictionalism, I focus on the compelling argument for platonism given by an appeal to the sciences. The Indispensability Argument establishes the power of explanation seen in the relationship between mathematics and empirical science. Cases of this explanatory power illustrate how we might have reason to believe in the existence of mathematical entities present within our best scientific theories. The second half of this discussion surveys …

The purpose of this study was to examine how the use of social network sites by international students affects their adjustment in several different sectors of campus life, including making social relationships, communication with university administration, and academic learning …

Scaling Up Your Story: An Experiment In Global Knowledge Sharing At The World Bank, Shad Morris, James B. Oldroyd, Sita Ramaswami Jan 2016

Scaling Up Your Story: An Experiment In Global Knowledge Sharing At The World Bank, Shad Morris, James B. Oldroyd, Sita Ramaswami

Faculty Publications

Timely and effective knowledge transfer is increasingly important in today’s technologically advanced global market. However, a myopic focus on efficiency has frequently rendered most organizational knowledge ineffective. By coupling technology with a formal system that captures informal stories in an engaging and entertaining way, actors within an organization may be more willing to listen to what geographically dispersed colleagues are doing, and may be more likely to ascribe value to that information. Focusing on the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, we conducted interviews with those sharing and using knowledge, and performed content analyses of 175 knowledge-sharing narratives. …

Using nurs* as a search term, 469 case study entries were retrieved from the REF database and placed into three categories determined by the level …

The Systematic Stretching And Contracting Of Ideophonic Phonology In Pastaza Quichua, Joseph A. Stanley, Janis B. Nuckolls, Elizabeth Nielsen, Roseanna Hopper Jan 2016

The Systematic Stretching And Contracting Of Ideophonic Phonology In Pastaza Quichua, Joseph A. Stanley, Janis B. Nuckolls, Elizabeth Nielsen, Roseanna Hopper

Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes systematic differences between sounds used in ideophones and sounds used in the non-ideophonic or “prosaic” lexicon of the Pastaza Quichua language of Amazonian Ecuador. We compare a digitized corpus of vocabulary items with a list of ideophones identified from field observations. We find that if a sound, syllable structure, or stress pattern is distributionally restricted in Pastaza Quichua, it is likely to be normalized and expanded within ideophones. The overall system is also stretched among ideophones by the addition of new sounds to the obstruents. These expansions are complemented by an overall contraction among sonorant sounds within …

From Characterising Three Years Of Hri To Methodology And Reporting Recommendations, P Baxter, J Kennedy, E Senft, S Lemaignan, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research requires the integration and cooperation of multiple disciplines, technical and social, in order to make progress. In many cases using different motivations, each of these disciplines bring with them different assumptions and methodologies. We assess recent trends in the field of HRI by examining publications in the HRI conference over the past three years (over 100 full papers), and characterise them according to 14 categories. We focus primarily on aspects of methodology. From this, a series of practical recommendations based on rigorous guidelines from other research fields that have not yet become common practice in HRI …

What’S On The Inside Counts: A Grounded Account Of Concept Acquisition And Development, S Thill, K Twomey Jan 2016

What’S On The Inside Counts: A Grounded Account Of Concept Acquisition And Development, S Thill, K Twomey

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Understanding the factors which affect the age of acquisition (AoA) of words and concepts is fundamental to understanding cognitive development more broadly. Traditionally, studies of AoA have taken two approaches, either exploring the effect of linguistic variables such as input frequency (e.g., Naigles and Hoff-Ginsberg, 1998) or the semantics of the underlying concept, such as concreteness or imageability (e.g., Bird et al., 2001). Embodied theories of cognition, meanwhile, assume that concepts, even relatively abstract ones, can be grounded in the embodied experience. While the focus of such discussions has been mainly on grounding in external modalities, more recently some have …

Biomimetic Manipulator Control Design For Bimanual Tasks In The Natural Environment, Alex Smith Jan 2016

Biomimetic Manipulator Control Design For Bimanual Tasks In The Natural Environment, Alex Smith

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

As robots become more prolific in the human environment, it is important that safe operational procedures are introduced at the same time; typical robot control methods are often very stiff to maintain good positional tracking, but this makes contact (purposeful or accidental) with the robot dangerous. In addition, if robots are to work cooperatively with humans, natural interaction between agents will make tasks easier to perform with less effort and learning time. Stability of the robot is particularly important in this situation, especially as outside forces are likely to affect the manipulator when in a close working environment; for example, …

Austerity And Its Effects On Neoliberal Industrial Policy: The Case Of Enterprise Policy In Ireland, Ewan Macdonald, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke Jan 2016

Austerity And Its Effects On Neoliberal Industrial Policy: The Case Of Enterprise Policy In Ireland, Ewan Macdonald, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

This paper seeks to explore the logic of actually existing austerity and its effects on the development of enterprise policy in the Republic of Ireland. It asks the following question: in what manner has enterprise policy been affected by the Irish experience of austerity? Neoliberal austerity is not merely state parsimony; after all the austerity of post-WWII United Kingdom, with its frugal construction of national health and welfare systems, is far from the austerity advocated by Merkel and Cameron today. In light of this, there are a large number of factors which have led to the unique development of actually …

The Concept Of 'Knowledge Creating': Re-Conceptualising The Problems Of Knowledge Transfer And Creation Processually, Conor Horan Jan 2016

The Concept Of 'Knowledge Creating': Re-Conceptualising The Problems Of Knowledge Transfer And Creation Processually, Conor Horan

Conference papers

How knowledge is created remains the subject of much debate (Kuhn, 1962). In fields of management, organisation studies and knowledge management, the hegemonic approach to studying the role of knowledge in management, and how it comes into being has predominantly been influenced by a knowledge transfer agenda. Recent attempts to explore a specific theory of knowledge creation (Nonaka, 1994) per se, have continued to rely on assumptions inherited from this knowledge transfer agenda. Here ‘events of transfer’ have been replaced with an emphasis on ‘events of creation’ suggesting that events of organisational knowledge creation require similar solutions to those addressing …
