Representations Of Indigenous Peoples And Use Of Pain Medication In Canadian News Media, Sarah E. Nelson, Annette J. Browne, Josee G. Lavoie Jan 2016

Representations Of Indigenous Peoples And Use Of Pain Medication In Canadian News Media, Sarah E. Nelson, Annette J. Browne, Josee G. Lavoie

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Using media coverage of the withdrawal of OxyContin in Canada in 2011 and 2012 as an example, this article describes a systematic analysis of how news media depict First Nations peoples in Canada. Stark differences can be seen in how First Nations and non-First Nations individuals and communities are represented. In First Nations communities, problematic substance use is discussed without considering the context of pain management, broad generalizations are made, and language of hopelessness and victimization is employed. An analysis of the differences in language, tone, sources of information, and what is left unsaid, makes visible the ways in which …

Access In The Accent: Career Opportunity Based On Differences In Regional Accents, Stephanie Hedges, David Eddington Jan 2016

Access In The Accent: Career Opportunity Based On Differences In Regional Accents, Stephanie Hedges, David Eddington

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Accents affect employment ratings more when the accent is perceived to be stronger (Carlson & McHenry, 2006). When the accent is strongly perceived by the employer, employment ratings drastically dropped for those speaking Spanish-influenced, Asian-influenced and African American English dialects (Carlson & McHenry, 2006). However, when the accent was only minimally perceived, employment ratings remained high (Carlson & McHenry, 2006). This proposes that accents only negatively impact employment when maximally perceived by the employer (Carlson & McHenry, 2006).

Their Hispanic Heritage: The Preservation Of Different Cultures In Lds Spanish-Speaking Congregations, Jeremy Ingersoll, Gerrit Van Dyk

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the early ‘90s, ninety-four Hispanic members of the LDS church were interviewed by the BYU Redd Center for Western Studies and provided oral histories. All interviewees were from a Spanish-speaking country or were the children of parents who came to the United States from a Spanish-speaking country, and all but a few were living in Utah or California. This gave us the opportunity to look into the past of Hispanic Latter-day Saints in Utah, and compare it to those living in a different environment in California. We looked at these oral histories with the hope to determine to what …

The Geographical Information Of Art History: How To Trace The Making Of Knowledge And Facts, Olivier Marcel

Artl@s Bulletin

The objective of this trans-disciplinary, trans-regional and trans-periodical issue of Artl@s Bulletin is to confront a wide range of sources (catalogues, institutional archives, photographs, interviews, etc.), methods (qualitative, quantitative, comparative, multi-situated, cartographic, etc.) and areas of investigation (careers, movements, markets, etc.) in order to highlight the pivotal and problematic role of traceability in the spatial study of art.

Brotherhood, Social Justice, And Persistent Deficit Ideologies: Latino Students’ Experiences In An All-Male Catholic High School, Ursula S. Aldana Jan 2016

Brotherhood, Social Justice, And Persistent Deficit Ideologies: Latino Students’ Experiences In An All-Male Catholic High School, Ursula S. Aldana

Journal of Catholic Education

Declining Catholic school enrollment rates coupled with increasing numbers of Latino Catholics (in the US) have prompted Catholic leaders to interrogate how they can best engage and meet the needs of the Latino community (Ospino, 2014; Notre Dame Task Force, 2009). Much of this work focuses on how Catholic schools can attract Latino students and their families, but does not situate the Latino Catholic school student experience within the historical, economic and sociopolitical context. This paper interrogates the history and experiences of Latino students at Divinity High School (pseudonym), an all male Catholic high school that has historically served a …

Catholic Education For Mexican Americans In Los Angeles: A Brief Historical Overview, Eduardo F. Lopez Jan 2016

Catholic Education For Mexican Americans In Los Angeles: A Brief Historical Overview, Eduardo F. Lopez

Journal of Catholic Education

This article explores the historical development of Catholic schools for Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, California. A brief overview of events that span from the 1700’s to the 1940’s is provided. Particular attention is placed on examining the administration of Cardinal James Francis Aloysius McIntyre from 1948-1969. While his predecessor, Archbishop John Joseph Cantwell, was responsible for laying the foundation of Catholic education in Los Angeles and introducing several innovations, it was under the direction of Cardinal McIntyre that Catholic schooling experienced its most significant growth and evolution. A critical examination of this history reveals a complex and contradictory relationship …

The Promise And Potential Of Two-Way Immersion In Catholic Schools, Luis R. Fraga Jan 2016

The Promise And Potential Of Two-Way Immersion In Catholic Schools, Luis R. Fraga

Journal of Catholic Education

Two-Way Immersion (TWI) is a method of instruction designed to facilitate the learning of a second language by non-native speakers. Unlike traditional methods of teaching a second language, TWI is grounded in the equal presence, respect, and value of the two languages and their related cultures. Moreover, the goal of TWI is the building of communities of intercultural competence and appreciation. In this essay, I argue that TWI is especially appropriate for many Catholic schools given the current and growing presence of Latino Catholics. However, the establishment and maintenance of an effective TWI school is not a panacea for efforts …

Latinos, Education, And The Church: Toward A Culturally Democratic Future, Antonia Darder Jan 2016

Latinos, Education, And The Church: Toward A Culturally Democratic Future, Antonia Darder

Journal of Catholic Education

The article provides a comprehensive critical analysis of key issues that are deeply salient to an examination of the relationship of Latinos, education and the Church. The status of Latinos and their educational participation in the United States is systematically presented through a critical theoretical lens that brings questions of historical, political, and economic inequalities and their consequences to the center of this interpretive interrogation. With this foundational piece in place, the article moves to the concept of cultural democracy as an important philosophical principle in our work to transform the education of Latino children within Catholic schools and beyond. …

Some Results On Analysis And Implementation Of Hc-128 Stream Cipher., Shashwat Raizada Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The HC-128 stream cipher is a successful entrant in the eStream candidate list (software profile) and is the lighter variant of HC-256 stream cipher. Apart from the analysis by the designer of the cipher (Hongjun Wu) to conjecture the security of this cipher, there are only a few other observations on this cipher despite being the focus of researchers during the three phases of eStream evaluation and later efforts in the community. Till date none of the security claims in favor of HC-128 by the designer could be broken. One may expect HC-128 stream cipher to be popular in commercial …

Islands Within An Almost Island: History, Myth, And Aislamiento In Baja California, Mexico, Ryan B. Anderson Jan 2016

Islands Within An Almost Island: History, Myth, And Aislamiento In Baja California, Mexico, Ryan B. Anderson

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the persistent histories and lasting effects of the Baja California peninsula's status as an "almost island." The peninsula is almost an island in so many ways. Its reputation as an island-like entity has also ben strengthened by a longstanding myth that it was, in fact, an actual island. In many senses it was an island - isolated, remote, difficult to envision, understand, and control. Geography and climate played a vital role in all of this, but so, too, did human imagination. The author uses the concept of shima, along with discussions about the dual meanings of the …

Counseling Attitudes And Stigma Among Polynesian Americans, Timothy B. Smith, G. E. Kawika Allen, Ofa Hafoka Jan 2016

Counseling Attitudes And Stigma Among Polynesian Americans, Timothy B. Smith, G. E. Kawika Allen, Ofa Hafoka

Faculty Publications

There is a paucity of research on the mental health of Pacific Islanders living in the U.S., including those of Polynesian descent. This study examined coping strategies, attitudes towards seeking mental health counseling, public and self-stigma towards seeking professional help, and psychological adjustment among 638 Polynesian Americans. On average, participants held neither favorable nor unfavorable attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help, but Polynesian American men endorsed moderate self-stigma about mental illness and Polynesian American women endorsed high levels of public stigma about mental illness. Women showed relatively more favorable attitudes than men about seeking help from professional mental health providers. …

Teaching Strategies For Today's College Classroom, Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock Jan 2016

Teaching Strategies For Today's College Classroom, Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Everybody has something to say about teaching. Everyone has an opinion on the subject. This is probably because everyone has been on the receiving end of it.

It is a favorite pastime of students to compare and contrast their professors. Much, if not most, of what they have to say is of a personal nature. Conspicuous in its absence is anything of substance about their teaching.

Talk at faculty meetings isn't much better. You will hear about lighter teaching loads, smaller class sizes, and fewer committee assignments. Invariably, some intrepid instructor might even suggest the need for better instruction. Talk …

Teaching And Technology Techniques For Teachers In Online Learning Environments, Sallie J. Johnson Jan 2016

Teaching And Technology Techniques For Teachers In Online Learning Environments, Sallie J. Johnson

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

When developing and delivering instruction, whether online or not, the use of technology is secondary to well-designed learning goals and objectives. What distinguishes online instruction and technology in the classroom from entertainment or recreation is the conceptual development of teaching techniques based on solid learning theories. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for implementing teaching and technology techniques for online learning environments.

Indigni Et Peccatoris Verbum: Christian Identity In The Epistula Severi, Mark Pearsall Jan 2016

Indigni Et Peccatoris Verbum: Christian Identity In The Epistula Severi, Mark Pearsall

Doctoral Dissertations

The Epistula Severi provides an account of the conversion of the Jews on the island of Minorca in February, 418. According to the letter, the Christians were inflamed with religious fervor as a result of the arrival of certain relics of St. Stephen the Protomartyr shortly earlier. As a result, they rallied under the leadership of their bishop, Severus, and attempted to engage the Jews of Magona, the primary city on the island, in a debate and convince them to join the Christian church. The Jews, according to Severus, refused to debate and began stockpiling weapons to defend themselves against …

Full, Conscious, And Active…Listening?, Heather Josselyn-Cranson Jan 2016

Full, Conscious, And Active…Listening?, Heather Josselyn-Cranson

Northwestern Review

Active participation by Christian laity in singing is a goal assumed by all liturgical leaders, scholars, and musicians. Is singing, though, the only form of active participation in liturgical music? What about listening? Drawing on discussions of listening by Aaron Copland, Frank Burch Brown, and Ronald J. Allen, it becomes clear that listening well is an active task, one for which musical leaders must prepare their congregations. Lay people should be encouraged to both receive music as a gift and to search out what it means in relationship to the congregation, the day, and the liturgical context. Congregations also need …

An Analysis Of Domestic Violence In Mass Media & Motion Pictures, Renee Delcambre Jan 2016

An Analysis Of Domestic Violence In Mass Media & Motion Pictures, Renee Delcambre

Research on Capitol Hill

Mass media have a curious and powerful position of influence within our culture making it a critical component in creating, altering, and/or mimicking current ideologies within society.

Motion pictures often incorporate life-like situations or plots into their stories which can contain controversial or taboo topics. One of these situations involves abuse within intimate, adult relationships. Choices made in how the abuse and characters are depicted is called framing. This strategy is a deliberate means of including and excluding certain information and/or details. It is a tactic used to provide the viewer with a carefully “framed” picture.

This analysis reveals the …

Ethnography On The Return Of Professional Egyptian Female Migrants From The Gulf Cooperation Council, Nerida Mackey Jan 2016

Ethnography On The Return Of Professional Egyptian Female Migrants From The Gulf Cooperation Council, Nerida Mackey

Theses and Dissertations

International labor migration is one of Egypt’s economic development strategies, averaging an estimated twenty-two billion dollars in remittances in recent years, according to Egypt Daily News (Al-Aees, 2015). Although the participation of Egyptians in international migration for the purpose of work has mainly been dominated by men, there is a substantial handful of Egyptian women who independently participate in these migration flows. The Feminization of migration is still an unexplored and relatively new phenomenon in Egypt. Much of the discourse on Egyptian international labor migration has focused on men. Research on the effects of the women left behind by migrant …

The Experiences Of Siblings Of Individuals With Disabilities: A Holistic View, Ashley Mc Adams Jan 2016

The Experiences Of Siblings Of Individuals With Disabilities: A Holistic View, Ashley Mc Adams

Educational Studies Dissertations

The research on siblings of individuals with disabilities has rarely addressed the perceived benefits of having a sibling with a disability. The existing research on the experience of siblings of persons with disabilities is also limited to European American families (Sage & Jegatheesan, 2010). With families from different cultures, I sought to capture the experiences of brothers and sisters who have siblings with disabilities. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationships of siblings with disabilities and typical developing siblings, and present a holistic picture from the perspective of the typical developing siblings. These gaps in the literature …
