The Combatant’S Stance: Autonomous Weapons On The Battlefield, Jens David Ohlin
The Combatant’S Stance: Autonomous Weapons On The Battlefield, Jens David Ohlin
International Law Studies
Do Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS) qualify as moral or rational agents? This paper argues that combatants on the battlefield are required by the demands of behavior interpretation to approach a sophisticated AWS with the “Combatant’s Stance”—the ascription of mental states required to understand the system’s strategic behavior on the battlefield. However, the fact that an AWS must be engaged with the combatant’s stance does not entail that other persons are relieved of criminal or moral responsibility for war crimes committed by autonomous weapons. This article argues that military commanders can and should be held responsible for perpetrating war crimes through …

Improving Oral And Written Communication, David M. Keithly
Improving Oral And Written Communication, David M. Keithly
Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings
Recent research indicates that reading and writing ability seem more related than previously thought, that writing ability can be effectively evaluated through analysis of student writing samples, and that analytical abilities should be measured through discussion, questioning and examination of expository writing (Cashin and McKnight, 1986; Kozol, 1985). The common premise of recent linguistic research seems to be that reading and writing are natural extensions of oral language. Reading is a "meaning-getting" process, and writing is a "meaning-giving" process. Comprehension results from the interaction of the mind of the reader and the text; composition results from the interaction of the …
Resisting The Male Gaze: Feminist Responses To The "Normatization" Of The Female Body In Western Culture, Diane Ponterotto
Resisting The Male Gaze: Feminist Responses To The "Normatization" Of The Female Body In Western Culture, Diane Ponterotto
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper attempts to present a feminist critique of the social and political promotion in Western culture of a univocal model of female corporeity imposed on women, and consequently detrimental to female subjectivity and agency. Starting from the Foucauldian position concerning social oppression determined by the disciplinary gaze of power structures, the paper discusses perspectives of resistance to the patriarchally-motivated scrutiny of the female body, and to the mass-media induced coercion of conformity to the normatized model for the female body in contemporary society.
Multi-Architecture In Saudi Arabia: Representing The History Of Women, Salwa Nugali
Multi-Architecture In Saudi Arabia: Representing The History Of Women, Salwa Nugali
Journal of International Women's Studies
The purpose of this research project is to put into context the role of women in Saudi Arabia through reading of symbols and signs of the physical shape of the first sky scrapers: AlMamlakah (Kingdom) and AlFaisalia. The paper analyses perceptions of modern Saudi Arabian architecture and the significance of our visual perception to gender codification is what this project attempts to analyze. The project uses three interlaced lines of investigation. The first is the relationship of architecture to the culture and the population. The research paper will study the architecture of the two skyscrapers. The second line of investigation …
Presenting The Absence: A Contrapuntal Reading Of The Māita In Nepali Tīj Songs, Balram Uprety
Presenting The Absence: A Contrapuntal Reading Of The Māita In Nepali Tīj Songs, Balram Uprety
Journal of International Women's Studies
Much before the arrival of Western feminism in Nepal with its vocabulary of protest and polemics, the discourse of right and fight, Nepali women have had a long complex and ambivalent genealogy of protest in the genre of Tīj songs. However, such discourses have been rendered invisible by the dominant epistemology that derives its ideological sustenance from the Eurocentric and Enlightenment paradigm of knowledge production. The collusion of native patriarchy with the dominant epistemological system can be located in the absence of any systematic engagement with the Tīj songs in the indigenous academia. Through Nepali women’s complex and highly nuanced …
Utopia And The Law And Literature Movement, Michael P. Malloy
Utopia And The Law And Literature Movement, Michael P. Malloy
UTOPIA500
Dr. Malloy kicked off the UTOPIA500 project with a presentation on Jan. 21, 2016. His paper, Utopia and the Law and Literature Movement, marked the quincentennial of the publication of Thomas More's novel Utopia in 1516. Dr. Malloy explored the meaning and implications of the concepts of utopia and dystopia. He argued, with colorful graphic support, that More's novel was a precursor to post-modernist literature, and that in our own time there has been a linguistic transformation of the concept of utopia to contemporary meanings that are often entirely independent of More's novel. Dr. Malloy concluded that More's novel is …

Services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) often include tailored strategies for successful employment placement. Using Oliver’s (1980) Expectation Confirmation Theory, this study utilized exploratory and confirmatory analyses of semi-structured interviews of 10 VR professionals to examine their view of the role expectations play in their assessment of important factors that lead to successful outcomes for DHH clients. Analysis revealed a complex, multilevel system in which VRCs operate as active mediators of the expectations of both clients who are DHH and their potential employers.

Symptom Patterns Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Deaf Trauma Survivors, Melissa L. Anderson, Amanda Sortwell, Kelly S. Wolf Craig, Douglas M. Ziedonis
JADARA
Details about Deaf people’s pattern of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms remain relatively unknown due to inaccessible methods used in most epidemiological research. We conducted semi-structured American Sign Language interviews with 16 trauma-exposed Deaf individuals to explore their PTSD symptom patterns. Half met criteria for current PTSD, a rate higher than the general population. Underlying this disparity may be heightened rates of dissociation and psychogenic amnesia reported by many Deaf trauma survivors. Future research with large samples of Deaf survivors is needed to clarify this hypothesis, and to inform interventions that more accurately target Deaf people’s pattern of trauma symptoms.

Are Stem Syllabi Gendered? A Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis, Laura Parson
Are Stem Syllabi Gendered? A Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis, Laura Parson
The Qualitative Report
This study explored the gendered nature of STEM higher education institution through a feminist critical discourse analysis of STEM course syllabi from a Midwest research university. I explored STEM syllabi to understand how linguistic features such as stance and interdiscursivity are used in the syllabus and how language and discourses used in the syllabus replicate the masculine nature of STEM education. Findings suggest that the discourses identified in the syllabi reinforce traditional STEM academic roles, and that power and gender in the STEM syllabi are revealed through exploration of the themes of knowledge, learning, and the teaching and learning environment …

Anger, Wrath, And Irritation In The Holy Quran : A Semiotic Study, Talal Khaleefah
Anger, Wrath, And Irritation In The Holy Quran : A Semiotic Study, Talal Khaleefah
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Anger is one of the Human beingʼs main irritations. Irritation can be defined as a state of total confusion where all activities of a human being come to a stop, the focus being only on irritation. Anger originally is attributed to a psychological source because it results from either external or internal influence. It is this that distinguishes irritation from confusion. Anger is one of the irritations that have been shown in the Glorious Qurʼan, for it has taken different forms or lexical items, as follows, ghadhab (anger), ghayz(rage), sakhat (condemnation). Due to the diversity of the linguistic signs that …

Language Control, 'Hyper-Sensitivity' And The Death Of True Liberalism, David R. Barnhizer
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
The Rule of Law in America is buttressed by the idea of free speech. Universities are supposed to be centers of free speech, dialogue and learning, in the process educating and preparing students to protect and preserve the unique ideal of the Western version of the Rule of Law. This includes the importance of competing factions attempting to achieve compromise through political discourse. There is a rather significant problem, therefore, when the dynamic and often contentious interactions that produce the ability to recognize the potential legitimacy of others’ arguments and the flaws in one’s own are short circuited by political …

Political Economy, Capitalism And The Rule Of Law, David R. Barnhizer, Daniel D. Barnhizer
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
There is a symbiotic relationship between a society’s form of economic activity and the Rule of Law institutions that support, facilitate, and limit that activity. Economic activity and Rule of Law institutions interact in a dynamic relation that creates, allocates, denies, and adapts power among competing entities. The core fact is that of transformation of the nature of power and the identities of those who control it. Nothing in such a system remains static and, unlike other systems, it is the natural effect of the system to reward its participants for creative contributions that sustain and advance its dynamism. The …

'Something Wicked This Way Comes': Political Correctness And The Reincarnation Of Chairman Mao, David R. Barnhizer
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
There could not possibly be any parallel between the actions of Mao Tse Tung’s young Red Guard zealots and the intensifying demands of identity groups that all people must conform to their version of approved linguistic expression or in effect be condemned as “reactionaries” and “counter-revolutionaries” who are clearly “on the wrong side of history”. Nor, in demanding that they be allowed to effectively take over the university and its curriculum while staffing faculty and administrative positions with people who think like them while others are subjected to “re-education” sessions that “sensitize” them into the proper way to look at …

Law Faculty Articles and Essays
Universities are the institutions responsible for advancing our freedom of thought and discourse through the work of independent scholars and the teaching of each generation of students. But for several decades, universities and other educational institutions have increasingly set up rules aimed at protecting individuals and groups from criticism that those individuals and groups consider insensitive, offensive, harassing, intolerant and disrespectful, critical of their core belief systems or threats to their agendas. Even though it has been claimed that disadvantaged interest groups have a right to use one-sided tactics of intolerance against those they consider to be responsible for their …
