Taxonomy Of Pathways To Dangerous Artificial Intelligence, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In order to properly handle a dangerous Artificially Intelligent (AI) system it is important to understand how the system came to be in such a state. In popular culture (science fiction movies/books) AIs/Robots became self-aware and as a result rebel against humanity and decide to destroy it. While it is one possible scenario, it is probably the least likely path to appearance of dangerous AI. In this work, we survey, classify and analyze a number of circumstances, which might lead to arrival of malicious AI. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to systematically classify types …

Data were collected from structured observations in 11 Pre- K classrooms in Southeast Virginia during spring and summer 2024. The Language Modeling dimension was assessed through five key indicators: frequent conversations, open-ended questions, repetition and extension, self and parallel talk, and use of advanced language. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlation, and regression analyses were employed to examine relationships between observed teacher behaviors and overall language modeling scores. Results revealed weak and statistically non-significant correlations across …

What If?: Mathematics, Creative Writing, And Play, Emily Clader

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Mathematics can inform creative writing by suggesting structures for it to follow, as well as by providing the imaginative impetus for common rules to be broken. In a workshop co-taught by the author, a class of sixth-grade students explored this interplay as they produced fractal-inspired poetry and geometry-inspired fiction. This article describes the form and results of the workshop in the context of a broader discussion of the influence of mathematics upon literature.

Legitimising The Illegitimate : Extending Interpretation Beyond Reality. The Shrimp Fairytale And Its Implications, Mervyn Martin

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The challenges of liberalization of international trade; Firstly was the realization that in the past there was a tendency to be satisfied with sweeping, unspecific statements on best principles, which always led to often a meaningless outcome without hard and fast commitments. The second was their episodic character. The notion of dispute settlement involves conflicting assertions as to the rights and obligations of the parties involved. Disputes arise from freely entered relationships between parties that create expectations as to their future conduct. there existed a three-pronged objective of the negotiating plan indicated from the Negotiating Group on Dispute Settlement for …

Varied Responses As A Means To The Richness Of Discourse: Reading Tough Texts Through Speaking And Writing, Carol L. Thompson, Michael W. Kleine

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Abstract: New scholarship advocates that students should learn deeply and well. Little information exists on exactly how to get students deeply into material so that they understand it inside and out, backward and forward and in a way that enables them to construct knowledge schemas. The authors have developed a heuristic list of communication response styles that enrich understanding of complex ideas and works and promotes students to use metacognition to reflect deeply about what they are learning.

The Role Of Motivational Systems And Emotions In Virtual Work, Steven A. Murphy, Michael J. Hine, Sandra Kiffin-Petersen Dr Jan 2016

The Role Of Motivational Systems And Emotions In Virtual Work, Steven A. Murphy, Michael J. Hine, Sandra Kiffin-Petersen Dr

Communications of the IIMA

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the behavioural activation system (BAS), the behavioural inhibition system (BIS) and emotions in virtual work. BIS was found to have significant positive relationships with anger, anxiety, annoyance, nervousness, and distress. There were indications of emotional contagion between research confederates and participants. Self-report skill knowledge and the skill role of the research confederate both had significant relationships with performance. Self-report skill knowledge was fully mediated by the skill role played by the research confederate. Managers of virtual teams need to be aware of individual differences such as motivational systems and …

Integrating Hot And Cool Intelligences: Thinking Broadly About Broad Abilities, W. Joel Schneider, John D. Mayer, Daniel A. Newman Jan 2016

Integrating Hot And Cool Intelligences: Thinking Broadly About Broad Abilities, W. Joel Schneider, John D. Mayer, Daniel A. Newman

Psychology

Although results from factor-analytic studies of the broad, second-stratum abilities of human intelligence have been fairly consistent for decades, the list of broad abilities is far from complete, much less understood. We propose criteria by which the list of broad abilities could be amended and envision alternatives for how our understanding of the hot intelligences (abilities involving emotionally-salient information) and cool intelligences (abilities involving perceptual processing and logical reasoning) might be integrated into a coherent theoretical framework.

Defining The Obvious, Or Not, Emily Furner, William Eggington Jan 2016

Defining The Obvious, Or Not, Emily Furner, William Eggington

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When a new word premieres in a publication in the English language, the word is normally followed with a definition (hereafter gloss) that defines or restates its meaning1. But generally, words will eventually stop being defined as readers come to understand the meaning of the word. In other words, when readers “accept” a word into their vocabulary, the practice of including definitions with newer words becomes unnecessary. In this study, I explored the possibility of using corpora to determine when words stop appearing with definitions, thus signaling when these new words became “accepted” into American English.
