Resistance And Potentiality In Literacy Narrative Assignments, Megan Weaver
Resistance And Potentiality In Literacy Narrative Assignments, Megan Weaver
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
Many students struggle with personal writing, yet this struggle is understood to encourage growth and learning. Analyzing the potentiality of literacy narrative assignments explores the complex paths of student resistance and success in writing. This analysis combines seduction theory and linguistic concepts of modality to explore student resistance in writing.
Teaching With Youtube: Online Media As Model Texts, Natalie L. James
Teaching With Youtube: Online Media As Model Texts, Natalie L. James
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
Online multimedia texts such as YouTube videos, TED talks, and podcasts are not only free and engaging for students, they can also model “popular intellectualism,” curiosity, and information literacy. This presentation demonstrates how to effectively use online multimedia as model texts for the university or high-school writing classroom.
Discourse Analysis: A Bridge Between Grammar Instruction And Writing Practice, Nan S. Lobue
Discourse Analysis: A Bridge Between Grammar Instruction And Writing Practice, Nan S. Lobue
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
Restricting grammar instruction to situational and individual contexts has become the standard “best practice” in the field of composition studies. However, this presentation will show that following grammar instruction with a discourse analysis assignment can give students the tools to come to a deeper understanding of their own writing tendencies.

On The Existential Function Of The Social And The Limits Of Rationalist Accounts Of Human Behavior, Doug Mcadam
On The Existential Function Of The Social And The Limits Of Rationalist Accounts Of Human Behavior, Doug Mcadam
Seattle University Law Review
Rational choice theory has achieved widespread influence in a number of social science disciplines, most notably economics and political science. Given its prominent position within economics, it is not surprising that rational choice theory (and other rationalist perspectives) dominates theory and research on the corporation and decision-making by corporate actors. By contrast, however, the theory has failed to gain more than a toehold in sociology. Indeed, most sociologists are downright hostile to rational choice theory. When pressed to explain why, those in the discipline are very likely to complain that the perspective is “asociological”; that the theory posits an atomized …
Corporations In The Flow Of Culture, Greg Urban
Corporations In The Flow Of Culture, Greg Urban
Seattle University Law Review
As an anthropologist, coming out of three decades of research among indigenous Brazilian populations, I naturally saw modern for-profit business corporations as tribes—the collective bearers of adaptive cultural know-how. They appeared to me to be the entities housing the culture needed to produce commodities, to trade commodities on the open market, or both. I was also, of course, aware of the legal concept of the corporation as fictive person capable of owning property and having standing in court cases, which I thought of as akin to the anthropological corporation insofar as both recognized the group as social actor. However, it …
Religious Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora: Combating The “Othering” Of Muslim Refugee Students In Nebraska, Jessica Sierk
Religious Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora: Combating The “Othering” Of Muslim Refugee Students In Nebraska, Jessica Sierk
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Many communities across the United States have been undergoing recent demographic changes. Since the 1980s, low-skilled labor (e.g. meatpacking) has attracted Latino families to settle in communities that historically have been home to few, if any, Latinos (i.e. the New Latino Diaspora). In more recent years, these same job opportunities have also characterized these communities as prime locations for refugees from countries like Somalia and Sudan. As a result, schools in these settings are serving an even more diverse student population than they were twenty, ten, or even five years ago. Given that the contexts of the New Latino Diaspora …
Counter-Discourses And Alternative Knowledge: Rural Chinese Female Students Accommodating And Resisting The Discourse Of Quality (Suzhi) At Higher Education Institutions In China, Lifang Wang
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
This article, based on a qualitative research study with 66 rural female students attending five public universities and one public college in China, examines how these students negotiated the dominant discourse of quality (suzhi), which represents them as lacking in capacity and knowledge. Since the 1980s when China started implementing its economic reforms, the Chinese state has constructed the discourse of quality to ascribe China’s underdevelopment to the low quality of its population, said to hinder China’s attempts to catch up with the more advanced Western economies. My research findings show how these students have been systematically marginalized and discriminated …

Bodies In Space/Bodies In Motion/Bodies In Character : Adolescents Bear Witness To Anne Frank., James S. Chisholm, Kathryn F. Whitmore
Bodies In Space/Bodies In Motion/Bodies In Character : Adolescents Bear Witness To Anne Frank., James S. Chisholm, Kathryn F. Whitmore
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Situated at the intersection of research on Holocaust education and embodied literacies this study examines how an arts-based instructional approach engaged middle school learners in developing empathetic perspectives on the Anne Frank narrative. We addressed the research question: What can adolescents who are using their bodies to gain empathy with Anne Frank teach us about embodied literacies? Digital images and video were used to generate a multimodal analytic method that combined focus group interviewing with the Semiotic Photo Response Protocol and Visual Discourse Analysis. Analyses of performance and visual arts texts illustrated how students layered their understandings as they recast …

The Path To Violent Behavior: The Harmful Aftermath Of Childhood Trauma, Nicholas Michael Perez
The Path To Violent Behavior: The Harmful Aftermath Of Childhood Trauma, Nicholas Michael Perez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adverse childhood experiences can lead to a number of harmful outcomes throughout an individual’s life, ranging from medical problems to criminal behavior. These traumatic experiences, comprised of different forms of maltreatment and dysfunctional household environments, can affect the development of a child in a variety of different ways. The multitude of developmental changes can produce compounding harmful effects on the child’s life and lead to acutely maladaptive outcomes. Under the perspective of developmental psychopathology, the ever-changing biological, psychological, and social dynamics of children who experience trauma can contribute to deficiencies in all aspects of their subsequent development. Each of these …
The Music Of Trees: The Intergenerative Tie Between Primary Care And Public Health, Peter J. Whitehouse
The Music Of Trees: The Intergenerative Tie Between Primary Care And Public Health, Peter J. Whitehouse
Faculty Scholarship
Stories help us frame and understand complex ideas and challenges. Metaphors are particularly powerful linguistic devices that guide and extend our thinking by bridging conceptual domains, for example to consider the brain as a digital computer. Trees are widely used as metaphors for broad concepts like evolution, history, society, and even life itself, i.e. ‘the tree of life’. Tree-like diagrams of roots and branches are used to demonstrate historical and cultural relationships, for example, between different species or different languages. In this paper, we describe a theatrical character called a tree doctor which is a living metaphor. A human being, …

Incongruous Conceptions: Owen Jones’S Plans, Elevations, Sections And Details Of The Alhambra And British Views Of Spain, Andrea Marie Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes Plans, Elevations, Sections, and Details of the Alhambra (1836-1842) by British Architect Owen Jones in relation to British conceptions of Spain in the nineteenth century. Although modern scholars often view Jones’s work as an accurate visual account of the Alhambra, I argue that his work is not only interested in accuracy, but it is also a re-presentation of the fourteen-century monument based on Jones’s ideologies and creative faculties. Instead of viewing the Alhambra through a culturally sensitive, historical lens, Jones treated it as an Imaginary Geography, as Edward Said called it, through which he could promote his …
The Role Of Translation In The Nobel Prize In Literature : A Case Study Of Howard Goldblatt's Translations Of Mo Yan's Works, Yau Wun Yim
Lingnan Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of the translator and translation in the Nobel Prize in Literature through an illustration of the case of Howard Goldblatt’s translations of Mo Yan’s works.
As the most significant international literary prize, the Nobel Prize in Literature is well discussed in media. However, insufficiently detailed attention has been given to the role of translation in the Prize. In many cases, the works that the Nobel judges evaluate are in fact translations, not the prize winner’s own words. Despite the importance of translation in the selection process, no research has ever …

A Socio-Culturally Responsive Pedagogical Approach To Advance Migrant Students Literacy, Alma D. Stevenson, Scott Beck
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
This presentation describes an innovative summer literacy program for intermediate and middle-level children of migrant farm workers that presented them with over two dozen children’s picture storybooks with migrancy themes, and systematically documented their responses to the books. Using these mentor texts and their responses as scaffolding, the students collaborated to create semi-autobiographical, illustrated narratives about growing up as migrants.

The New Way Of War: Is There A Duty To Use Drones?, Oren Gross
The New Way Of War: Is There A Duty To Use Drones?, Oren Gross
Florida Law Review
Part I of this Article briefly describes the newest battlespace occupants. Robotic systems have been taking active part in combat. They now inhabit the air, the land, and the sea. They carry out missions ranging from surveillance and bomb disposal to “destroy and disable.” Part II examines the relevant principles of LOAC. It argues that drones are not, per se, unlawful under LOAC. Rather, the critical question is the same for drones as for other types of weapons, i.e., whether the specific use of the weapon complies with LOAC. In this context, the weapon must be deployed in accordance with …
