Modeling Children's Organization Of Utterances Using Statistical Information From Adult Language Input, Katie Lynn Walker
Modeling Children's Organization Of Utterances Using Statistical Information From Adult Language Input, Katie Lynn Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Previous computerized models of child language acquisition have sought to determine how children acquire grammatical word categories (GWCs). The current study seeks to determine if statistical structure can be corroborated as a factor in GWC acquisition. Previous studies examining statistical structure have dealt with word order rather than GWC order and only examined an overall success rate. The present study examines how well a computer model of child acquisition of GWCs was able to reorganize scrambled sentences back into the correct GWC order using transitional probabilities extracted from adult language input. Overall, a 50% success rate was obtained, but when …

Motivation Of Adult, Auditioned Community Choirs: Implications Toward Lifelong Learning, David James Redman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Knowledge of motivation factors can assist conductors and music educators at all levels in planning and implementation of musical goals. The purpose of this study was to identify motivational factors to join the choir and maintain membership in the choir as well as the role of stress/anxiety in maintaining choral membership. In addition, the role of musicianship was evaluated in terms of music aptitude and vocal ability. Participants (N=135) from four adult, auditioned community choirs participated in this study. Data was collected using Advanced Measures of Music Audiation, Singing Coach, measure of vocal ability and a questionnaire relating to topics …
Queer Horizons: Queer Assemblages And ( Re ) Visioning The"Coming-Out"Trauma Narrative In Fiction, A Critical Introduction, Eric Jason Pitman
Queer Horizons: Queer Assemblages And ( Re ) Visioning The"Coming-Out"Trauma Narrative In Fiction, A Critical Introduction, Eric Jason Pitman
Theses and Dissertations
The experience of many queer subjects in "coming-out" often results in a great deal of continued adversity over the course of their lifetimes, in spite of what popular, exceptionalized narratives such as the "It Gets Better" campaign might suggest. "Coming out" often entails a great deal of trauma, thus making the need to continue "coming out" a source from which anguish continues to emanate and affect queer bodies. Unfortunately, there are few fictional texts dealing specifically with "coming-out" trauma narratives. Queer subjects who continue to endure trauma through the act of "coming out" often discover that the written worlds of …

Designing Tools To Facilitate Students Learning American Sign Language, Matt Huenerfauth, Elaine Gale, Brian Penly, Dhananjai Hariharan
Annual Effective Access Technology Conference
Students learning American Sign Language (ASL) lack interactive tools to give them feedback on their signing accuracy, when a human ASL instructor is not available.
In this multi-university NSF-funded project, we are creating software, utilizing a Kinect camera, to aid students who are learning ASL. In the final system, computer vision software will identify aspects of signing that contain nonfluent movements and give feedback to students practicing ASL independently. This tool won’t replace feedback from ASL instructors; it would only catch certain errors.

Scalable Programming For The Analysis Of Aphasia Transcripts, Paula Conn, Vicki Hanson
Annual Effective Access Technology Conference
Technologies designed for individuals with nonfluent aphasia focus on digitizing speech therapy methods and generating speech. To improve these technologies, the language characteristics of individuals with non- fluent aphasia must be further understood. Language corpuses, such as the AphasiaBank, provide a promising solution for informing technology usability in terms of navigation, interface, and content decisions. As a tool for informing such work, this research investigates the viability of a flexible and scalable multi-threaded software program for the analysis of AphasiaBank transcripts. Results show that the program allows rapid analysis of all transcriptions by optimizing core functionality and minimizing the number …

The “Becoming White Thesis” Revisited, Philip Q. Yang, Kavitha Koshy
The “Becoming White Thesis” Revisited, Philip Q. Yang, Kavitha Koshy
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The claim that some non-Anglo-Saxon European immigrant groups such as the Irish, Italians, and Jews became white in historical America has largely been taken for granted these days, but we see a need for a qualified rectification of this thesis. Did these non-Anglo-Saxon European immigrant groups really become white? We argue that the answer to this question depends on how “becoming white” is defined. We have found no evidence to support the “becoming white thesis” in terms of change in the official racial classification of these groups in the record of social institutions such as U.S. censuses, naturalization laws, and …

Reconsidering The Emergence Of The Gay Novel In English And German, James P. Wilper
Reconsidering The Emergence Of The Gay Novel In English And German, James P. Wilper
Purdue University Press Books
In Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German, James P. Wilper examines a key moment in the development of the modern gay novel by analyzing four novels by German, British, and American writers. Wilper studies how the texts are influenced by and respond and react to four schools of thought regarding male homosexuality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first is legal codes criminalizing sex acts between men and the religious doctrine that informs them. The second is the ancient Greek erotic philosophy, in which a revival of interest took place in the …
Unpacking Empowerment Discourse Within A Women's Reentry Organization, Amanda Nicole Miller
Unpacking Empowerment Discourse Within A Women's Reentry Organization, Amanda Nicole Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Through ethnographic research with a small organization, Jareth, that helps women transition from prison to the community, this work unpacks discourses of empowerment within reentry organizations. I argue that Jareth’s empowerment discourse works on a pragmatic level to help women become employed but it does not work well to completely meet the needs of women offenders because businesses do not want to employ former prisoners and because the general public thinks that prison can meet all of women's needs. I also argue that empowerment defines 'power' and dependence' in particular ways - through appropriate and inappropriate forms of power and …
In Search Of Solidarity: Identification Participation In Virtual Fan Communities, Jaime Shamado Robb
In Search Of Solidarity: Identification Participation In Virtual Fan Communities, Jaime Shamado Robb
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study questions the way sports fans create (a sense of) community through online conversations. Here, ‘community’ and ‘internet’ are seen as invitational terms that suggest an authentic social interaction. By examining the language used by fans to sustain a sense of solidarity in the virtual realm, this study questions the ways in which rhetoric frames the situation. Participation in the virtual space relies on practices of identification derived from physical engagements. By using a rhetorical approach, this study illuminates the way individual participants operationalize a rhetoric in virtual conversations that spiritualize the fan’s experience at the base of a …

Fantasy Incarnate: Of Elves And Men, Simon J. Cook Dr.
Fantasy Incarnate: Of Elves And Men, Simon J. Cook Dr.
Journal of Tolkien Research
This essay proposes the idea of incarnation as a key to unlocking Tolkien’s conception of fantasy as set out in the 'Origins' section of On Fairy Stories. Tolkien's intellectual context is explored and his conception of mythology as a blending of imagination and history examined. The essay also establishes the differences between mortal and Elvish fantasy and argues that Tolkien's Elves engage in a different kind of incarnational art than do mortals. In conclusion it is claimed that in ‘Origins’ Tolkien reworked the speculations of mid-Victorian comparative philology into an aesthetic theory of artistic creation grounded upon the notion …

Virginity And Intellectual Construction: The Function Of Virginity Within The Early English Novel, Jayna Morgan Leipart Guttilla
Virginity And Intellectual Construction: The Function Of Virginity Within The Early English Novel, Jayna Morgan Leipart Guttilla
Theses and Dissertations
This project situates the state of virginity as both a narrative and mode of behavior within Samuel Richardson's novel Pamela. By challenging the supposition that feminine virginity in eighteenth-century novels is presented as both an intellectual and physical disability, this thesis allows for a reconsideration of how virginity functions in the early novel. I place virginity in three distinct and yet simultaneous modes of thinking that contributed to the conflicting and contradictory images of women that were available to purchase in print: virginity as moral intelligence and form of resistance; virginity as an intellectual disability, and the loss of virginity …

Winning The Peace: The "Three Pillars" Of George Bush At Whitehall Palace, Terry Robertson
Winning The Peace: The "Three Pillars" Of George Bush At Whitehall Palace, Terry Robertson
Speaker & Gavel
The November, 19, 2003 speech given by George W. Bush at Whitehall Palace in Great Britain was one of the most significant in the President’s political career. Mr. Bush attempts, in the speech, to reinforce his proponents as well as negate the arguments of his skeptics. This work illustrates, through Neo- Aristotelian rhetorical criticism how the President met the rhetorical situation, how he utilized language and rhetorical devices, and critiques the means of persuasion utilized by Mr. Bush.

Kritiking As Agrumentative Praxis, Joseph P. Zompetti, Brian Lain
Speaker & Gavel
Controversies in the realm of academic debate are often assessed with the standards used for other social science confrontations. The notion of paradigms, introduced by Thomas Kuhn (1970) to describe scientific revolutions, provides a starting point for analyzing the current conflict over kritiking. Despite this, previous discussions concerning the so-called “kritik” have focused mainly on whether it should be considered a legitimate argument form in contemporary policy debate (Berube, 1996; Katsulas, 1996/1997; Morris, 1996/1997). In this way, these discussions have become embroiled in a back-and-forth squabbling. Overcoming the tendency to steadfastly proclaim the legitimacy/illegitimacy of kritiks as an argument form …

Musical Training Influences Auditory Temporal Processing, Saravanan Elangovan, Nicole Payne, Jacek Smurzynski, Marc A. Fagelson
ETSU Faculty Works
Background: A link between musical expertise and auditory temporal processing abilities was examined.
Material and methods: Trained musicians (n=13) and non-musicians (n=12) were tested on speech tasks (phonetic identification, speech recognition in noise) and non-speech tasks (temporal gap detection).
Results: Results indicated musicians had shorter between-channel gap detection thresholds and sharper phonetic identification functions, suggesting that perceptual reorganization following musical training assists basic temporal auditory processes.
Conclusions: In general, our results provide a conceptual advance in understanding how musical training influences speech processing, an ability which, when impaired, can affect speech and reading competency.
