Instructional Experiences And Schooling Factors Of Long-Term English Learners, Rafael Gaeta
Instructional Experiences And Schooling Factors Of Long-Term English Learners, Rafael Gaeta
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This phenomenological study includes exploration of the instructional experiences and the schooling factors that have been in place both assisting and failing academically six long-term English learners who attend a comprehensive urban high school in Los Angeles. Long-term English learners have attended schools in the United States (U.S.) for more than six years and are not yet fully proficient in English. Qualitative and quantitative data sources, include demographic questionnaire, one-on-one focused interviews, classroom observations using English learner Shadow Study Protocol (Soto, 2012), academic transcript analysis, and a focus group, were analyzed using descriptive content analysis and Critical Sociocultural Theory (Handsfield, …
Critical Hip-Hop Graffiti Pedagogy In A Primary School, Wade E. Brown
Critical Hip-Hop Graffiti Pedagogy In A Primary School, Wade E. Brown
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Educational reform movements are constantly in the process of trying to improve a fractured educational system. Many scholars contend there is a discrepancy between educational outcomes for White students and students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Some educators in working class communities of color have begun to infuse elements of students’ social and cultural backgrounds, including popular culture, to create instructional methods that can better engage and pique student interest. Hip-hop Pedagogy is one of the methods, rooted in popular culture, which is being used in classroom settings to increase students’ awareness about the societal constructs and issues in their communities …
Intergroup Relations In Inclusive Classrooms: The Development And Validation Of The Intergroup Relations Classroom Environment Scale (Irces), Matthew P. Cunningham
Intergroup Relations In Inclusive Classrooms: The Development And Validation Of The Intergroup Relations Classroom Environment Scale (Irces), Matthew P. Cunningham
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Before the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (1975), most efforts to educate students with disabilities happened in isolation. Within the last 40 years, a growing number of districts and individual schools have experimented with inclusive models in hopes of successfully educating students with and without disabilities in the same classrooms; however, general education students still hold negative attitudes toward students with disabilities. The contact hypothesis of intergroup contact theory postulates that prejudicial attitudes toward out-groups can be alleviated if the following conditions are present in and around contact situations: equal status, cooperation, common goals, and institutional support. The purpose …

Sacred Spaces: A Narrative Analysis Of The Influences Of Language And Literacy Experiences On The Self-Hood And Identity Of High-Achieving African American Female College Freshmen, Michelle Flowers Taylor
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Late-adolescent African American students face unique difficulties on their journey to womanhood. As members of a double minority (i.e., African American and female) (Jean & Feagin, 1998), certain limiting stereotypes relevant to both race and gender pose challenges to these students. They must overcome these challenges in order to excel within the various and changing environments they move through on a daily basis (hooks, 1981, 1994). Within the context of social justice, this dissertation provides insight into the role that language and literacy practices play to help enable the positive and affirming development of self-hood of African American college freshmen. …

Discourse Functions Of Modal Verbs 'Will And Shall' In Christian Prayers, Olalekan T. Adepoju
Discourse Functions Of Modal Verbs 'Will And Shall' In Christian Prayers, Olalekan T. Adepoju
Publications and Research
Prayer and language can be said to share similar definition in that they are both means of communication, though in prayer, one is communicating solely with a Supreme Being. This communication implies that a prayer is a form of discourse due to the presence of interaction; as such a discourse analysis of prayer will not be out of place. This study therefore investigates the use of modal verbs by pastors in Christian prayers. This is with a view to identifying and examining the discourse functions performed by these modal expressions. The Speech Act Theory and Systemic Functional Grammar, mainly using …
Wherefore Art Thou, Bae Romeo? Or, An Argument For Modernizing Shakespeare’S Texts, Erin M. Ritchie
Wherefore Art Thou, Bae Romeo? Or, An Argument For Modernizing Shakespeare’S Texts, Erin M. Ritchie
BYU English Symposium
This research examines the trend towards modernizing Shakespeare’s plays. Though Shakespeare is valued for his intricate wordplay and changes to his text are considered sacrilegious, I will explain how Elizabethan Era views on language value finding expressing Shakespeare’s important universal social commentaries in ways that are accessible to the largest number of people. Because the majority of Shakespeare’s global fame stems from admirers who have not encountered his original works, but translations of it, this research suggests that the value gained from adapting the original texts into more modern forms of English to engage a wider audience outweighs the arguments …

An Idea For Improving English Language Learners’ Access To Education, Erin Archerd
An Idea For Improving English Language Learners’ Access To Education, Erin Archerd
Fordham Urban Law Journal
English Language Learners (ELLs) and language-minority families have few promising options for receiving tailored educational services under federal law. Civil Rights era statutes like the Equal Education Opportunities Act (EEOA) designed to protect and promote ELLs’ right to an education have led to few actual changes in children’s education, and fewer still within reasonable time frames. For the subset of ELLs with disabilities, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) holds out the promise of more direct and immediate improvements in their education. Part I of this Article introduces the problem through a hypothetical student, Faith, and her family. Part …

Stories Of Becoming And Being An Associate Degree Nurse Educator: A Narrative Inquiry Study Examining How Participants' Ways Of Knowing Evolved Through Their Experiences, Bonnie Jill Ross
Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the stories of the experiences of three associate degree nurse educators and how they evolved in the way they viewed their world as they transitioned in their role from nurse expert to experienced nurse educator. As associate degree nursing education is the most commonly reported initial nursing education of registered nurses in the United States, and, because of the highly affordable and accessible means for educating the next generation of nurses, the purpose of this study was to address the projected nurse and nursing faculty shortage. Through narrative inquiry, this study has provided a means to inform …
The Influence Of Test Anxiety On Memory, James J. Malloy
The Influence Of Test Anxiety On Memory, James J. Malloy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between test anxiety and memory among a college population (N = 42). Specifically, the goal was to ascertain whether text anxiety had a measurable effect on memory, which was represented by scores on the Nelson-Denny reading comprehension subtest. Participants were divided into a stressed group (N = 22) and a non-stressed group (N = 20) in order to compare scores from test-takers with anxiety to those who do not. It was hypothesized that (a) test anxiety would have a significant impact on test results, (b) the non-stressed group would score …
Influence Of Early Language Exposure On Children's Cognitive And Language Development, Lauren M. Head, Ashley Darcy Mahoney
Influence Of Early Language Exposure On Children's Cognitive And Language Development, Lauren M. Head, Ashley Darcy Mahoney
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015: Purpose: Early childhood represents a critical period for brain development, in which foundations for later learning are established. Brain development is shaped through environmental experiences, including language exposure and parental engagement. Research shows that low-income children hear 30 million less words than their more affluent peers by the age of 4, and that this word gap contributes to disparities in their educational outcomes. As interventions aimed at bridging the word gap develop, literature should be evaluated to examine the influence of early language exposure on children's neurodevelopment. Methods: An integrated review of literature …

Purpose: Timely and appropriate access to primary care is essential to both the maintenance and improvement of population health. In the United States, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) provide primary care services for underserved communities, which includes Hispanics with limited-English-proficiency. Community health workers, known as promotores de salud in Spanish, are recognized as an essential link between underserved communities and the formal healthcare system. In nursing, the navigator role often refers to individualized assistance provided to patients with a specific health condition or in a specialized setting. Building on and combining aspects of …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 24, 2015: Purpose: An early environment that includes language-rich, adult-child interactions, or language nutrition, is critical for a child's brain development and subsequent educational achievement. Research demonstrates that the strongest predictor of a child's academic success is the quality and quantity of words spoken to a child in the first three years of life, which is directly related to third grade literacy. Children from low-income families hear thirty million words less than peers from more affluent families and currently, only 21% of fourth-grade children from low-income families in Georgia can read at grade level. Talk …

The Critical Factors That Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Teaching English As Second Language Nursing Students, Traci J. Starkey
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015:
Purpose: The nation's demographic changes have led to a shortage of racial and ethnic minorities in nursing. Recruitment efforts have resulted in a growing number of diverse English as second language (ESL) nursing students. Unfortunately, these students have had higher rates of attrition and lower levels of academic achievement. If these students continue to experience high attrition rates, cultural diversity in the practice setting could be greatly impacted along with the ability to provide culturally relevant health care. As student diversity increases, communication issues based on cultural and language differences have created major …

Solid Metaphor And Sacred Space: Interpreting The Paradigmatic And Syntagmatic Relations Found At Beth Alpha Synagogue, Evan Carter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, more than an iconic symbol of Jewish identity was destroyed. As the epicenter of religious life for Jews within the land of Israel, the Temple stood as both a symbol for religious hope and as the physical embodiment of Judaism. Yet, in the centuries that would follow synagogue’s like the one found at Beth Alpha would come to fill its absence.
In this thesis I will demonstrate how the use of Christopher Tilley’s theory of the solid metaphor helps us to better understand both the art and architecture of the …
Writing Resistance: Agency And Politics In The Postmodern And Contemporary Novel, Bradley Michael Poling
Writing Resistance: Agency And Politics In The Postmodern And Contemporary Novel, Bradley Michael Poling
Theses and Dissertations
This project seeks to substantiate a key ambivalence at the heart of contemporary literature: what does it mean to "return" to politics? Critics of contemporary literature have outlined the new literary aesthetic, using social and political engagement as a key component in distinguishing the contemporary novel from its postmodern predecessor. This project, in response to this claim, will examine both the discursive and representation politics of two landmark postmodern novels, Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Don DeLillo's Libra, while examining Jennifer Eganâ??s A Visit from the Goon Squad as a descendent of this literary lineage. This project argues that the …

Music In The South African Anglican Diocese Of Cape Town From 1900 To The Present: Toward A History Of Anglican Music In The Anglican Church Of Southern Africa, Andrew-John Bethke
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
This article provides a succinct history of Anglican cathedral and parish music in the Western Cape Province and the city of Cape Town. Within these parameters the author explores the musical trends in different strands of Anglicanism (Anglo-Catholic, Broad Church and Evangelical), documents the development of choirs and music groups and gauges the musical consciousness of South African Anglicans. The article begins at the turn of the twentieth century and extends to 2010. The earliest history (from 1750 - 1900) has been documented in a previous article by the same author.
