Service–Learning In Undergraduate Nursing Education: Where Is The Reflection?, Janet Brown, Nola A. Schmidt
Service–Learning In Undergraduate Nursing Education: Where Is The Reflection?, Janet Brown, Nola A. Schmidt
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Publications
Service–Learning is recognized as a valuable pedagogy that involves experiential learning, reflection, and reciprocal learning. Reflection is a critical component because it assists students to develop critical thinking and social awareness as they reflect upon their experiential learning with community partners. Although there is a proliferation of literature about service–learning, upon closer examination, it is apparent that some authors do not place emphasis on reflection when reporting on service–learning projects. This begs the question, “Where is the reflection?” The purpose of this article is to provide an overview and describe misrepresentations and exemplars of service–learning. After providing an overview of …

Process Evaluation On Crisis Services In Northern Idaho, Claudia G. Miewald
Process Evaluation On Crisis Services In Northern Idaho, Claudia G. Miewald
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Idaho ranks last of all states for per capita spending on mental health treatment (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2014). In Idaho, individuals in crisis who suffer from mental illness or Substance Use Disorder (SUD) have few options for care. They often utilize the most expensive treatment through the emergency department, inpatient services, or by going to jail. Idaho has the 7th highest suicide rate in the nation (Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho, 2015), while Region 1 of Idaho has the second highest suicide rate in the state from 2010-2014 (Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho, 2015).

Color Your Plate: A Pilot Nutrition Education Intervention To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Intake Among Older Adults Participating In The Congregate Meal Site Program In Kentucky Senior Centers, Emily Dickens
Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems
The purpose of this study was to determine if the amount and variety of fruit and vegetable intake increased among community-dwelling older adults participating in Kentucky’s congregate meal site program following a series of educational nutrition lessons. A convenience sample (n=35) of community-dwelling older adults at two intervention (n=19) and two control (n=16) senior centers in central Kentucky participated in this quasi-experimental pre-post pilot study. Following the intervention there was a trend towards increased self-reported intake in the variety of fruit and vegetables among the intervention group (range:0.03±3.31 to 1.32±2.75 servings per week); a significant increase in the number of …

The Value Of Pets To Public And Private Health And Well-Being, Leslie Irvine, Laurent Cilia
Human-Companion Animal Relationships Collection
This analysis reviews empirical studies of the health benefits of pet ownership published between 1980 and 2016 and collected in the database of the Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative, or HABRI. The analysis began with 373 titles and eventually encompassed a dataset of 151 full-text documents. Along with analysis of substantive content, each study received a score for methodological rigor. The number of studies has steadily increased, particularly since 2000, and methodological rigor has improved. The literature encompasses four topics, including cardiovascular, general, and psychosocial health, and physical activity. Overall, the research finds that pets benefit human health, although the available …

Personality Traits In College Students And Caregiving For A Relative With A Chronic Health Condition, Michael A. Trujillo, Paul B. Perrin, Aaliah Elnasseh, Bradford S. Pierce, Melody Mickens
Psychology Publications
The purpose of this study was to investigate among college students the relationship between personality traits and willingness to care for a relative with a chronic health condition. 329 undergraduate students completed an online questionnaire. Hierarchical multiple regressions found that after controlling for demographics personality traits explained 10% of the variance in willingness to provide emotional care, 7% in instrumental care, and 7% in nursing care. Within these models, greater empathy was uniquely associated with willingness to provide emotional, instrumental, and nursing care for a family member in the future. Similarly, participants with high agreeableness were more willing to provide …
The Efficacy Of A House Call Provider Service, Lynne M. Jacobson
The Efficacy Of A House Call Provider Service, Lynne M. Jacobson
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Problem: Many individuals who are disabled, homebound from chronic disease or are of advanced age have difficulty seeking medical services from an outpatient medical provider. Unnecessary or preventable hospital readmissions/ER visits from congestive heart failure (CHF) and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations are costly and these individuals would benefit from a house call program. The PICO format is as follows: P) Elderly and adult population with COPD and/or CHF. I) Adult and elderly population with COPD and/or CHF receiving house call visits by a nurse practitioner. C) Adult and elderly population with COPD and/or CHF receiving medical care at …
Exploring The Influence Of Bc-Adm Certification On Advanced Practice Nurses’ Clinical Practice And Knowledge Of Cognitive Dysfunction In Geriatric Diabetes Care, Kimberley J. Krapek
Exploring The Influence Of Bc-Adm Certification On Advanced Practice Nurses’ Clinical Practice And Knowledge Of Cognitive Dysfunction In Geriatric Diabetes Care, Kimberley J. Krapek
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
To meet the healthcare demands of an aging population one strategy is the use of advanced practice nurses (APN) in primary care (Buerhaus, DesRoches, Dittus, & Donelan, 2015). Diabetes affects 26.9% of people aged 65 and older in the United States. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often unrecognized in this population (Munshi, Hayes, Iwata, Lee &Weinger, 2012). Information on APN knowledge of this comorbidity or practice characteristics regarding cognitive function assessment is limited. This capstone project sought to increase understanding of APN practice and knowledge of MCI, comparing APNs board certified in advanced diabetes management (BC-ADM) to those without certification. …

The Online Dating Preferences Of Chinese American Older Adults, Lin Jiang
The Online Dating Preferences Of Chinese American Older Adults, Lin Jiang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recently years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of online dating websites among adults over age 50. Nevertheless, samples collected in existing literature are mainly centered on White/Caucasian Americans. Furthermore, the only theoretical guide has been sexual strategies theory. This study fills the gap by using sexual strategies theory and acculturation theory to test Chinese American older adults dating preferences.
The sexual strategies theory discusses how males and females use different mating strategies in short-term and long-term contexts. Acculturation theory describes changes in which individuals or groups adopt another culture when it makes contact with their …

The Semantic Memory Imaging In Late Life Pilot Study, Michael Adam Sugarman
The Semantic Memory Imaging In Late Life Pilot Study, Michael Adam Sugarman
Wayne State University Dissertations
Introduction: Several functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have analyzed the famous name discrimination task (FNDT), an uncontrolled semantic memory probe requiring discrimination between famous and unfamiliar individuals. Completion of this simple task recruits a semantic memory network that has shown utility in determining risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Specific semantic memory probes using biographical information associated with famous individuals may build on previous findings and yield superior information regarding risk for AD.
Method: Sixteen cognitively intact elders completed the FNDT and two novel tasks during fMRI: Categories (matching famous individuals to occupational categories) and Attributes (matching famous individuals to …

With continued surges in enrollment in the various online health science programs, especially nursing programs, there is a great need for additional research to be conducted regarding how students perceive their professors social presence in an online learning environment through the use of Computer-Mediated Communications - CMCs. The objectives of this descriptive phenomenological qualitative study were to: 1) illustrate how students perceive their professors’ social presence as used in various types of CMCs; 2) identify emotions which the students have experienced in response to their professor’s CMCs; 3) unveil common themes regarding student perception of their professors’ social presence; and …
Aging And Emotion Recognition: An Examination Of Stimulus And Attentional Mechanisms, Stephanie Nicole Sedall
Aging And Emotion Recognition: An Examination Of Stimulus And Attentional Mechanisms, Stephanie Nicole Sedall
ETD Archive
Emotion recognition is essential for interpersonal communication. However, previous research has suggested that older adults are not as accurate as younger adults in recognizing certain emotions, particularly negative facial expressions of anger, fear, and sadness. Including additional contextual information (e.g., manipulation of certain facial features) might help us better understand these age differences. The present study investigated how potential age differences in emotion recognition are influenced by stimulus factors (target eye gaze direction) as well as facial viewing patterns, cognitive functioning, and physiological processes. A sample of younger and older adults viewed static facial expressions depicting anger, fear, sadness, happiness, …
