The objectives of this research were to 1) summarize the available evidence on the impact of hearing loss on quality of life (QOL) among U.S. active-duty service members, 2) describe the QOL instruments that have been used to quantify the impact of hearing loss on quality of life, 3) examine national population-level secondary databases and report on their utility for studying the impact of hearing loss on QOL among active-duty service members, and 4) provide recommendations for future studies that seek to quantify the impact of hearing loss in this population. There is a lack of literature that addresses the …
Establishing A Nurse Mentor Program To Improve Nurse Satisfaction And Intent To Stay, Sara Jane Jones
Establishing A Nurse Mentor Program To Improve Nurse Satisfaction And Intent To Stay, Sara Jane Jones
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Retention of new graduate registered nurses (RNs) is a problem within the healthcare system negatively impacting patient safety and health care outcomes. The problem of retention of qualified RNs is compounded by the potential shortage of RNs, the aging RN workforce and the aging US population. During a period of transition, a novice RN requires the guidance of others to learn to apply theoretical knowledge to real life clinical experiences. In the linear progression of Benner’s levels of clinical competency, the beginning two levels of nurses need a resource person to guide their progression in clinical practice. A mentoring relationship …

Used as integrated tools, technology may improve the ability of healthcare providers to improve access and outcomes of care. Little is known about healthcare teams’ preferences in using such technology. This paper reports the findings from focus groups aimed at evaluating a newly developed primary care technology platform. Focus groups were completed in academic, outpatient, and community settings. Focus groups were attended by 37 individuals. The participants included professionals from multiple disciplines. Both prescribing (=8) and nonprescribing healthcare team members ( = 21) completed the focus groups and survey. The majority were practicing for more than 20 years (44.8%) in …

Purpose. While individual participant data (IPD) meta-analyses are considered the gold standard for meta-analysis, the feasibility of obtaining IPD may be problematic. Methods. Using data from a previous meta-analysis of 29 studies on exercise in adults with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, the percentage of studies in which useable IPD was provided was calculated. Results. Eight of 29 authors (28%, 95% CI = 11% to 44%) provided IPD. Using logistic regression, neither year of publication (odds ratio = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.90 to 1.27, = 0.58) nor country (odds ratio = 1.36, 95% CI = 0.20 to 10.9, …

Current Issues And Developments In Psychology With Regards To Latina/O Americans, Rachel Giddings
Current Issues And Developments In Psychology With Regards To Latina/O Americans, Rachel Giddings
2016 Symposium
Past research has shown that the Chicano/Latino community experience mental illness differently than other populations, and they are largely underserved by mental health professionals. This work explores the underrepresentation of culturally diverse individuals seeking and utilizing psychological services due to the lack of cultural sensitivity of therapists; cynicism by mental health professionals, and an outlook that therapy can be used as an oppressive tool by those in power (Sue & Sue, 1999). In short, there is much apprehension towards traditional therapeutic and intervention models in which most therapists have been educated on are based on and designed to meet the …

This study applied the Stress/Health Model to examine a novel approach for promoting stress management among 67 caregivers of persons with multiple sclerosis, who often face unique caregiving challenges. Hierarchical regressions indicated that caregiver distress (i.e., emotional burden) and engagement in other health-promoting activities (i.e., controlling alcohol use) were the best predictors of caregiver stress management. Communication with the MS care recipient’s health provider about caregiver engagement in health-promoting activities was associated with caregiver stress management, but not significantly more so than explained by the other factors (i.e., caregiver distress and engagement in health-promoting behaviors). A more controlled study would …

HIV-infected individuals are living longer on antiretro-viral therapy, but many patients display signs that in some ways resemble premature aging. To investigate and quantify the impact of chronic HIV infection on aging, we report a global analysis of the whole-blood DNA methylomes of 137 HIV+ individuals under sustained therapy along with 44 matched HIV- individuals. First,we develop and validate epigenetic models of aging that are independent of blood cell composition. Using these models, we find that both chronic and recent HIV infection lead to an average aging advancement of 4.9 years, increasing expected mortality risk by 19%. In addition, sustained …

Validity Of The Promis Physical Performance Scale In Determining Frailty And Physical Ability In Community-Dwelling Elderly, Jeff Houck, Tomoko Iwanaga, Christine Kieu, Keegan Lerma, Chelan Murasaki, Tawny Souza
Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy
In many clinical settings, therapists are continuously seeking efficient and valid assessments for older adults to determine their physical abilities and functional status. The Patient Reported Outcome Instrument System (PROMIS) is a newly developed computer adapted test (CAT) that is being incorporated into electronic medical records and has been reported to assess a person’s physical function. The current gold standard to assess different levels of frailty and physical function in older individuals is the Modified Physical Performance Test (mPPT). However, the mPPT is a lengthy performance based outcome measure that takes time to administer. The purpose of this study is …
The Effects Of Cerebrovascular Aging On Sleep Quality In A Sample Of Aging Adults, Chelsea Tia Mapp
The Effects Of Cerebrovascular Aging On Sleep Quality In A Sample Of Aging Adults, Chelsea Tia Mapp
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Cerebrovascular burden (CVB) is a significant factor among the aging population. Age-related cognitive decline is an important social and economic issue, and understanding the mechanisms has clinical implications, both in selecting potential therapies and in choosing specific modifiers for their evaluation. In summary, past work suggests that high CVB is one source of variance in neurovascular functioning among older adults. High CVB and associated brain-changes have been identified as causes of age-related changes and it may be that high CVB is a correlate of age-related changes in sleep quality. The primary hypothesis to be tested is that cerebrovascular burden measured …

Objectives: To examine whether older parents in China would benefit more from daughters’ care than from sons’ care.
Methods: Analysis of the unique datasets of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey conducted in 2002, 2005 and 2008-2009 in 22 provinces.
Results: As compared to having son(s), having daughter(s) is significantly more beneficial at older ages in China, with regards to maintaining higher cognitive capacity and reducing mortality risk. Such daughter-advantages are more profound among the oldest-old aged 80+ as compared to the young-old aged 65-79, and surprisingly more profound in rural areas as compared to urban areas, even though son-preference …

The current study examined whether relationship quality with older adults currently and in childhood, as well as experience with older adults, was associated with biases toward older adults and interest in working with older adults as a possible career area. The authors sampled undergraduate students (N = 753, M = 18.97 years, SD = 2.11 years) from a Northern California university. In hierarchical regression analyses, higher perceived quality of relationships with older adult family members, higher perceived social support, and lower perceived conflict from relationships with older adults was significantly associated with positive attitudes toward older adults. Interest in …
What Is The Impetus To Move? Amenity-Rich Residential Clubs And Retirement Housing Aspirations Of The Soon-To-Be Old, Tris Kee
Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)
Hong Kong’s population is aging rapidly, yet the city is still struggling to provide an adequate housing supply for its soon-to-be old cohort. By examining the needs and aspirations of the soon-to-be old population through the theoretical frameworks for elderly housing and elderly migration, the relationship between amenity-rich residential clubs and retirement housing aspirations of future retirees become clear. This paper finds that the soon-to-be old cohort is aspired to better medical, leisure, and community facilities in their residential vicinities when considering their retirement living environment, underlining the appeal of amenity-rich residential clubs; however, most of the soon-to-old old cohort …

Escalating obesity rates have become a significant public health problem in the Middle East and North Africa [MENA] region and have been associated with shifts towards a westernized diet. This integrative review aimed to examine the current dietary trends and transitions and their association with obesity in Arabic-speaking countries of the MENA region. Relevant databases were searched for studies in MENA countries between 1998 and 2014 that investigated obesity trends and changes in dietary patterns at the regional level in all age groups. A total of 39 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All the articles noted that obesity was increasingly …
Conceptualizing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy As A Supportive-Educative Nursing System For Patients With Insomnia, Christine Kurtz, Nola Schmidt
Conceptualizing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy As A Supportive-Educative Nursing System For Patients With Insomnia, Christine Kurtz, Nola Schmidt
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Publications
Difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep is one of the most common health complaints of the general population. Approximately 35-50% of people experience occasional insomnia symptoms (Walsh et al., 2011) while 12-20% have insomnia disorder (Morin, et al., 2011; Roth et al., 2011). An effective treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I; Schutte-Rodin, Broch, Buysse, Dorsey, & Sateia, 2008), a nonpharmacological, evidence-based intervention aimed at changing sleep behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to frame CBT-I as a nursing intervention for insomnia within the context of Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory (Orem, 2001). Orem’s theory provides a framework from …
