ISER Reports
This assessment evaluates the effects of future climate change on a select set of ecological systems and ecosystem services in Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula and Chugach National Forest regions. The focus of the assessment was established during a multi-agency/organization workshop that established the goal to conduct a rigorous evaluation of a limited range of topics rather than produce a broad overview. The report explores the potential consequences of climate change for: (a) snowpack, glaciers, and winter recreation; (b) coastal landscapes and associated environments, (c) vegetation, (d) salmon, and (e) a select set of wildlife species. During the next half century, directional …

Relationship Between Lidar-Derived Canopy Layering And Rainfall Redistribution In Forests Varies With Scale, Daniel Cirincione
Relationship Between Lidar-Derived Canopy Layering And Rainfall Redistribution In Forests Varies With Scale, Daniel Cirincione
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
Forest canopy can reduce precipitation reaching the ground by up to 50% through interception, storage, and evaporation of droplets from leaf and bark surfaces. This process, called "interception loss," impacts runoff, recharge, flood flashiness, erosion, etc., and cost of stormwater management. It is not well understood how canopy structure affects interception loss, particularly in urban forests. This research addresses this issue by monitoring interception loss variables for a common south eastern US tree species (slash pine) across a natural-to-urban gradient in forest structure. This study considers three different sites to obtain the natural-to-urban gradient. Two of those sites are at …

Group Analysis In Practice: Narrative Approaches, A Phoenix, J Brannen, H Elliott, J Smithson, Et Al
School of Psychology
Working in groups is increasingly regarded as fruitful for the process of analyzing qualitative data. It has been reported to build research skills, make the analytic process visible, reduce inequalities and social distance particularly between researchers and participants, and broaden and intensify engagement with the material. This article contributes to the burgeoning literature on group qualitative data analysis by presenting a worked example of a group data analysis of a short extract from an interview on serial migration from the Caribbean to the UK. It describes the group's working practices and the different analytic resources drawn upon to conduct a …

United States Asia Strategy: Policy, Power, Pivot, Michael S. Montemalo
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
This paper is an assessment of contemporary United States strategy in the Asia-Pacific. It gives a background of United States grand strategy throughout history culminating with the 2012 Pivot to Asia designed and implemented by the Obama Administration, the Department of State, and the National Security Council. The Pivot to Asia will be viewed by assessing the hard and soft powers the United States has at its disposal as a means to further its national interests in the Asia-Pacific. Current cases focusing on Southeast Asia and East Asia will be used to assess the efficacy of the new strategy and …

The Life Of The Factory? Or The Life Of The Farm? That Is The Question., Adam C. Mcelwain, Bethany Lutwin
Migration in Global Context Symposium
Abstract: The focus of this lesson on Global Migration is the emotion behind young women’s decision to leave for the city and work in the factory, or stay in their hometown. Both have an opportunity cost for a life that may be better. The essential question is “Is it better to be a factory girl who has emigrated to the city or a country girl living and working on a farm?” Students will examine the motivation behind leaving the country for a factory job in the city or staying behind and working in a rural setting like a farm. They …

Garden Cities Of The Americas: Greenbelt And El Palomar, A Comparative Case Study On The Model's Translation To The American Continents, Maria Gabriela Dines
Open Access Theses
The Garden City model proposed by Ebenezer Howard in the 1890s has proven to be highly adaptable to different environments, political and historical contexts, and different cultural backdrops. However, this inherent flexibility has also left the Garden City model vulnerable to appropriation and misinterpretation. This vulnerability has been extensively tested through a number of adaptations and international translations that took place at the beginning of the twentieth century. To develop this thesis, the essential elements and the theory behind the original British model are used as a basis for a comparative case study that focuses on the translation of Howard's …

Breaking The Dragon's Gaze: Commodity Fetishism In Tolkien's Middle-Earth, Steven Kelly
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines Tolkien’s treatment of economics in Middle-earth, using tobacco as an example of a Lukácsian fetishized commodity, and explains why this is important not just as an example of world-building but as an indicator of the power and danger of unexamined economic assumptions.

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines the geography and both natural and created landscapes of Middle-earth in terms of what they reveal about gender and race, and how Tolkien used landscape to “[map] alternative masculinities onto […] different races” and emphasize contrasting depictions of femininity through female characters and races that either “stay put” or wander.

The Last Glacial Maximum In Central North Island, New Zealand: Palaeoclimate Inferences From Glacier Modelling, Shaun. R. Eaves, Andrew N. Mackintosh, Brian M. Anderson, Alice M. Doughty
Dartmouth Scholarship
Quantitative palaeoclimate reconstructions provide data for evaluating the mechanisms of past, natural climate variability. Geometries of former mountain glaciers constrained by moraine mapping afford the opportunity to reconstruct palaeoclimate, due to the close relationship between ice extent and local climate. In this study, we present results from a series of experiments using a 2D coupled energy-balance/ice-flow model that investigate the palaeoclimate significance of Last Glacial Maximum m
oraines within nine catchments in the central North Island, New Zealand. We find that the former ice limits can be simulated when present-day temperatures are reduced by between 4 and 7 ◦C, if …

Impact Of Repeal Of Conference On European Liner Market, Yuh-Ling Su, Dong-Hua Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In September 2006 the European Council decided to repeal Regulation 4056/86 with effect from October 2008. The primary issue addressed in this study is the impact of repeal of block exemption in Europe on two major Europe-based trades – the United States/North Europe trade and the Far East/North Europe trade. This paper measures empirically the economic impact of the repeal of conference on competition of EU liner shipping. Adam Smith’s theory of joint products is adopted to examine the impact of the repeal after 2009. This paper considers head haul and backhaul container shipments as joint products. Two statistical equations …
Taking Teacher Quality Seriously, Derek W. Black
Taking Teacher Quality Seriously, Derek W. Black
William & Mary Law Review
Although access to quality teachers is one of the most important aspects of a quality education, explicit concern with teacher quality has been conspicuously absent from past litigation over the right to education. Instead, past litigation has focused almost exclusively on funding. Though that litigation has narrowed gross fundinggaps between schools in many states, it has not changed what matters most: access to quality teachers.
This Article proposes a break from the traditional approach to litigating the constitutional right to education. Rather than constitutionalizing adequate or equal funding, courts should constitutionalize quality teaching. The recent success of the constitutional challenge …
Woman And Power: Thoughts Arising Out Of The Roundtable "Debating Women And Power In The Middle Ages," International Medieval Congress, Leeds, 2014, Penelope Nash
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Questions are asked about how we study medieval women in positions of power, with particular reference to elite Italian and German women in the earlier Middle Ages. The essay calls for scholars to search for nuances in former understandings of women’s opportunities to exercise power while re-examining locality, time period, life cycles, and female and male power. The essay includes an appeal to scholars to become better acquainted with the work of their peers who write in other languages.

Where Do We Go From Here? Some Thoughts On Power And Gender In The Middle Ages, Theresa Earenfight
Where Do We Go From Here? Some Thoughts On Power And Gender In The Middle Ages, Theresa Earenfight
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Current research on queens exposes the biased weaknesses in much of the scholarly work on monarchy and reveals that queens were hardly exceptional. By examining monarchy as a family affair, rather than that of a man alone on the throne, it is clear that queens and noblewomen were fundamental to the operations of monarchy. Taking this meta-discourse of monarchy into account reveals a complex network of affiliations that were obscured by generations of scholars who focused only the deeds of men and thus regarded a woman in power as exceptional.
Analysis Of Transit Oriented Development Compatibility For Light Rail Station Areas Adjacent To U.S. Interstate Freeways, Eric D. Dorsey
Analysis Of Transit Oriented Development Compatibility For Light Rail Station Areas Adjacent To U.S. Interstate Freeways, Eric D. Dorsey
Master's Theses
In 2006, the city of Denver completed a major phase of the T-REX project that included expanding a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, building 13 stations along the corridors of Interstates 25 and 225. The expansion brought mixed concerns about whether locating the system alongside interstate freeways would produce transit-oriented developments (TOD), or if it intended to have stations that serve multiple purposes, some functioning as destinations and others serving as feeder stations to generate ridership for the system. This prompted a study to (1) create a typology of station areas and determine what type of station areas are located …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Understanding the processes that determine above-ground biomass (AGB) in Amazonian forests is important for predicting the sensitivity of these ecosystems to environmental change and for designing and evaluating dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). AGB is determined by inputs from woody productivity [woody net primary productivity (NPP)] and the rate at which carbon is lost through tree mortality. Here, we test whether two direct metrics of tree mortality (the absolute rate of woody biomass loss and the rate of stem mortality) and/or woody NPP, control variation in AGB among 167 plots in intact forest across Amazonia. We then compare these relationships …

School Climate Transformation Efforts In Montana's Public Schools: State Support Of Local Visions For The Future, Piper Worthington
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Public education in the United States (US) has been called the “great equalizer”. Schools not only intersect with with every family in a school district, they often serve as a locus for community gathering and development: schools are a reflection of the community in which they are situated. Over the past 15 years, academic research and teaching practices have redefined the measure of success in school to include and connect emotional and behavioral learning with academic development. How have state educational agencies (SEAs) supported local schools and districts (LEAs) through this process, while also supporting the unique identities of school …
It’S All In Your Head: A Solution To The Problem Of Object Coincidence, Graham Louis Renz
It’S All In Your Head: A Solution To The Problem Of Object Coincidence, Graham Louis Renz
Theses
It’s uncontroversial that artifacts like statues and tables are mind-dependent. What’s controversial is what this dependence entails about the ontic status of artifacts. I argue this mind-dependence entails that the extra-mental world contains no artifacts or artifact joints. In support of this claim I respond to recent arguments proffered by defenders of the mind-independent existence of artifacts, viz. those of Lynne Rudder Baker, Crawford Elder, and Amie Thomasson. I argue the most plausible story about artifacts is that they’re in our minds, not the world; they are merely projections onto a world of “indifferent materials”. With this established, I show …
