Mapping Temperate Vegetation Climate Adaptation Variability Using Normalized Land Surface Phenology, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Xiaoyang Zhang Apr 2016

Mapping Temperate Vegetation Climate Adaptation Variability Using Normalized Land Surface Phenology, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Xiaoyang Zhang

GSCE Faculty Publications

Climate influences geographic differences of vegetation phenology through both contemporary and historical variability. The latter effect is embodied in vegetation heterogeneity underlain by spatially varied genotype and species compositions tied to climatic adaptation. Such long-term climatic effects are difficult to map and therefore often neglected in evaluating spatially explicit phenological responses to climate change. In this study we demonstrate a way to indirectly infer the portion of land surface phenology variation that is potentially contributed by underlying genotypic differences across space. The method undertaken normalized remotely sensed vegetation start-of-season (or greenup onset) with a cloned plants-based phenological model. As the …

Money Within A Direct Search Framework, Ping Mum Ang Apr 2016

Money Within A Direct Search Framework, Ping Mum Ang

Doctoral Dissertations

Chapter 1 shows that total anonymity in matching is not a necessary condition to give rise to the use of money, contrary to the existing literature, which finds that total anonymity is required. The first paper presents a simple model of direct money search in a decentralized environment. This paper presents three interesting findings: (i) partial anonymity is sufficient for money to be useful, (ii) commodity money does not exist in symmetric direct money search at steady state, (iii) bartering and commodity money can co-exist in the asymmetric case. The introduction of fiat money drives out bartering and commodity money, …

Stagnation And Mass Loss On A Himalayan Debris-Covered Glacier: Processes, Patterns And Rates, Sarah Thompson, Douglas I. Benn, Jordan Mertes, Adrian Luckman Apr 2016

Stagnation And Mass Loss On A Himalayan Debris-Covered Glacier: Processes, Patterns And Rates, Sarah Thompson, Douglas I. Benn, Jordan Mertes, Adrian Luckman

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The ablation areas of debris-covered glaciers typically consist of a complex mosaic of surface features with contrasting processes and rates of mass loss. This greatly complicates glacier response to climate change, and increases the uncertainty of predictive models. In this paper we present a series of high-resolution DEMs and repeat lake bathymetric surveys on Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal, to study processes and patterns of mass loss on a Himalayan debris-covered glacier in unprecedented detail. Most mass loss occurs by melt below supraglacial debris, and melt and calving of ice cliffs (backwasting). Although ice cliffs cover only ∼5% of the area of …

Concepts About Sedimentology And Stratigraphy In Undergraduate Geoscience Courses, Bailey Z. Kreager Apr 2016

Concepts About Sedimentology And Stratigraphy In Undergraduate Geoscience Courses, Bailey Z. Kreager

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This two-part study examines sedimentologic and stratigraphic concepts in undergraduate geoscience courses. The first part seeks to identify the various types of interactive engagement strategies used in undergraduate science courses, how they are used and in what fields. It also looks at areas in which the geosciences have excelled in interactive engagement strategies. Published studies describing interactive engagement strategies in college-level courses were collected and coded, which identified six emergent types of interactive engagement strategies: (1) Polling, (2) Full-Class Discussion and Activities, (3) In-Class Group Work, (4) Out-Of-Class Group Work, (5) Online Work, and (6) Other types. Interactive engagement strategies …

An Assessment Of Home Energy Efficiency In Kalamazoo, Alexis Coutts

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to assess the status of home energy efficiency in Kalamazoo as well as the reasons why (or why not) a homeowner adopts energy efficiency and what their incentives and barriers are. In order to address these questions this study first relies on a literature review to offer insight on this complex topic and reveal the main incentives and barriers to energy efficiency already found by homeowners. Next a survey is completed by a total of thirty participants, fifteen homeowners from two separate neighborhoods of Kalamazoo, using socioeconomics as a variable. Where Milwood neighborhood acts …

The Impossible, Only Solution: School Busing And Racial Integration In Memphis, Tennessee, 1972-1975, Jeffrey Scott Frizzell Apr 2016

The Impossible, Only Solution: School Busing And Racial Integration In Memphis, Tennessee, 1972-1975, Jeffrey Scott Frizzell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examines school busing in Memphis, Tennessee as a remedy for racial inequality in education. Busing to achieve integration was a paradox. It was simultaneously the only method available to effectively balance Memphis's dual school system and also an impossible solution that encouraged white flight and a weakening of the school system. Studying the varying responses to court-ordered busing not only helps explain its shortcomings, but also serves as a flashpoint to reveal a transitional moment in civil rights, conservatism, and evangelicalism. Most Memphians disproved of the initial busing plan. Many black Memphians felt the plan did not go far …

The Role Of Family Interactions In Hiv Risk For Gay And Bisexual Male Youth: A Pilot Study, Michael C. Lasala, Carl F. Siebert, James P. Fedor, Elyse J. Revere Apr 2016

The Role Of Family Interactions In Hiv Risk For Gay And Bisexual Male Youth: A Pilot Study, Michael C. Lasala, Carl F. Siebert, James P. Fedor, Elyse J. Revere

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite ongoing prevention efforts, young gay and bisexual males continue to engage in sexual behaviors that place them at disproportionately high risk for HIV infection. Parental monitoring and parent-child communication have been found to be associated with low-risk sexual behavior among heterosexual youth, but the role of family interactions for gay and bisexual male youth remains largely unexplored. To help address this gap, an exploratory study of recorded and coded interactions among 35 gay and bisexual youth and their parents was done to begin to identify which types of family interactions were associated with youth high-risk sexual behavior. Parent-son communication …

Many U.S.- and foreign-based MNCs that have implemented carefully researched tax strategies to reduce their income taxes are coming under increased scrutiny. Most MNC tax strategies involve businesses they conduct worldwide, but which are managed from the U.S. These strategies have several factors in common:

(i) Companies established in tax havens or otherwise structured to attract little if any tax;

(ii) Intercompany agreements placing commercial risk and intangibles in such companies, thereby shifting profits to such companies;

(iii) Conduct of centralized activities and functions in the U.S. (in addition to group senior management), which are integral to and which critically …

Place-Based Curriculum In The Eighth Grade English Language Arts Classroom, Lindsey K. Cassidy Apr 2016

Place-Based Curriculum In The Eighth Grade English Language Arts Classroom, Lindsey K. Cassidy

Education

In this project, I am investigating the role of place-based education (PBE) in the eighth grade English Language Arts (ELA) classroom and creating a place-based curriculum to use in this class. While PBE has many different definitions and connotations, I define it here as a type of education that takes advantage of the local opportunities to learn in a community and place as a basis for an educational experience. PBE engages student learning by making connections to their community through their work, identifying how their classwork is connected to life, and providing students with an authentic audience for their products …

The Social And Emotional Impact Of Videogames In The Classroom: A Meta-Synthesis, Michael Kaminsky Apr 2016

The Social And Emotional Impact Of Videogames In The Classroom: A Meta-Synthesis, Michael Kaminsky

Special Education Masters Program Theses

As videogames become more and more prevalent in today’s culture, the effects of gameplay on child development has grown as a concern for parents, educators, and researchers. The aim of this paper is to explore the possible social and emotional impacts of including videogames in the classroom. This paper specifically investigated the impact of videogame play on student self-esteem, social skills, and emotional well-being. This was done through a meta-synthesis of the existing literature on the social and emotional aspects of videogame play. Results indicate that there are likely both positive and negative impacts from gameplay but there is a …

Enhancing The Clinical Supervision Process For Beginning Mental Health Professionals, Adie Callahan Apr 2016

Enhancing The Clinical Supervision Process For Beginning Mental Health Professionals, Adie Callahan

Counseling

Using current research, this project discovers and compiles the pertinent information students need to know to successfully utilize supervision. Supervision was established as a field competency after the American Psychological Association's 2002 Multinational Competencies Conference. Since then, the mental health field has made strides in defining, standardizing, and evaluating the process of supervision. Students' awareness and ability to effectively use supervision is still gaining momentum, as the professionals in the field develop an infrastructure to train student development of knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the utilization of supervision. This project's application establishes a supplemental booklet for students in the …

Southwest Alaska: Where The Sea Breaks Its Back, Matt Bowes, Lindsay Clark, Ryan Hickel, Shivani Kakde, Erin Popek, Chris Won, Peter Pappas, Angie Lunda, Deborah E. Lo

Education Masters Program Projects and Theses

The authors have borrowed their title from the title of the book "Where the Sea Breaks Its Back: The Epic Story - Georg Steller and the Russian Exploration of Alaska" by Corey Ford. Mr. Ford's title may have also been borrowed/derived from older Unangax or Sugpiat origins, though the authors were not able to verify this. The following volume is the story of Southwest Alaska. The authors make no claim that the story presented within is comprehensive; though we believe that the following pages contain a breadth of topics that will hopefully entice the curious reader to further explore the …
