The Level Of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Contamination On The Kalamazoo River Shoreline Remains High Following The 2010 Enbridge Oil Spill, Wisam Abdulabbas Flayyih Al Isawi
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
- One of the nation’s worst inland oil spills occurred near Marshall in Michigan in 2010.
- The recent Enbridge Line 6B rupture released over three million liters of diluted bitumen crude oil into the environment.
- The spilled oil entered the Talmadge Creek and flowed into the Kalamazoo River, a Lake Michigan tributary.
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) together with other pollutants were released into the environment.
- PAHs represents significant threats to aquatic organisms due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties and their persistence in the environment.
- Five years following the oil spill accident, the levels and identities of PAHs were investigated in …

How Landscape Ecology Informs Global Land-Change Science And Policy, Buma, Audrey Mayer, Amelie Davis, Sara Gagne, E. Louise Loudermilk, Robert Scheller, Fiona Schmiegelow, Yolanda Wiersma, Janet Franklin
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Landscape ecology is a discipline that explicitly considers the influence of time and space on the environmental patterns we observe and the processes that create them. Although many of the topics studied in landscape ecology have public policy implications, three are of particular concern: climate change; land use–land cover change (LULCC); and a particular type of LULCC, urbanization. These processes are interrelated, because LULCC is driven by both human activities (e.g., agricultural expansion and urban sprawl) and climate change (e.g., desertification). Climate change, in turn, will affect the way humans use landscapes. Interactions among these drivers of ecosystem change can …

The State Courts And Alaska Politics: Independence, Public Accountability, And Political Influence, Michael L. Boyer
Faculty, Staff, and Students
From the chapter introduction: "How does the Alaska political and governmental process deal with the tension between the need for judicial independence, public accountability, and the court system’s role in politics and public policy making? The following two sections explore the influences that have shaped the Alaska court system and its organization. The next section explains the devices that work to promote independence and impartiality. Then we explore in more detail six aspects of the role of the courts in Alaska politics and policy making.

The Treatment For Malpractice – Physician, Enhance Thyself: The Impact Of Neuroenhancements For Medical Malpractice, Harvey L. Fiser
Pace Law Review
This article will introduce some of the issues and offer some possible guidelines which may eventually guide cases of medical malpractice and medical care in the face of neurointerventions. First, I will briefly address the standard of care in medical malpractice cases in general. Second, I will discuss some of the existing and potential physical and neurological enhancements available for physicians. Finally, I will explore how these neurointerventions could alter the standards for medical malpractice for both the enhanced doctors and the entire medical profession.

CO2 Summit II: Technologies and Opportunities
Fuel wood is regarded as a major source of energy around the world, particularly in developing nations forming part of the energy mix. Most rural communities around the world, consider forests as the repository of stored energy. The study focused on the role of fuel wood in deforestation and the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the Thulamela local municipality in South Africa. Information regarding the fuel wood consumption was collected during a manual field survey of 200 households in four villages in the municipality using questionnaires and interviews. The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were calculated using the …

Tracing And Predicting Collaboration For Junior Scholars, Chun-Hua Tsai, Yuru Lin
Tracing And Predicting Collaboration For Junior Scholars, Chun-Hua Tsai, Yuru Lin
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Academic publication is a key indicator for measuring scholars' scientific productivity and has a crucial impact on their future career. Previous work has identified the positive association between the number of collaborators and academic productivity, which motivates the problem of tracing and predicting potential collaborators for junior scholars. Nevertheless, the insufficient publication record makes current approaches less effective for junior scholars. In this paper, we present an exploratory study of predicting junior scholars' future co-authorship in three different network density. By combining features based on affiliation, geographic and content information, the proposed model significantly outperforms the baseline methods by 12% …

Exploring Schools' Use Of Natural Spaces, M Gilchrist, R Passy, S Waite, R Cook
Plymouth Institute of Education
This chapter focuses on the changing ways in which schools are using natural spaces as part of their pupils’ learning experience. We suggest that learning in natural spaces has undergone something of a renaissance in recent times, and explore the reasons that this might be so. We then examine ways in which schools and other practitioners are using outdoor spaces for play, for non-curricular and for curricular learning. The chapter draws on a range of countries for examples that show how a nation’s cultural ideas about the outdoors can be incorporated into a country’s outdoor learning, and how other ideas …

Writing/Trauma, Natasha Noel Liebig
Writing/Trauma, Natasha Noel Liebig
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In writing/trauma, I address the association of trauma with knowledge, language, and writing. My discussion first works to establish the relationship between trauma and knowledge. I argue that trauma does not fit into the traditional Enlightenment model of scientific knowledge or the ontological model of what Michele Foucault calls the ‘truth-event.’ Rather, I contend that trauma is unique embodied knowledge, different from that of praxis and normal memory. In general, embodied knowledge is a matter of prenoetic and intentional operations. The body schema and body image maintain a power of plasticity and adjust to new motilities in …
