Estimating Matriculation With A Focus On Financial Aid And Test Optional Policies: Data From A Liberal Arts Institution In The Northeast, Hillary Morgan May 2016

Estimating Matriculation With A Focus On Financial Aid And Test Optional Policies: Data From A Liberal Arts Institution In The Northeast, Hillary Morgan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The climate in college admissions is more competitive than ever, making understanding the college choice factors that contribute to a student’s enrollment decision increasingly important. Using admitted student data from a liberal arts institution in the northeast for fall 2008 to fall 2011, and after controlling for student preparedness, government financial aid awards, student and family characteristics, and student level of interest, I examine the relationship between (1) institutional financial aid variables, (2) a dummy variable of being test optional in the admissions process or not, and (3) the interaction between the two.

General findings of multivariate probit regression analysis …

Although the iPad device has become a new trend as a teaching and learning tool in schools, using it in Saudi schools is still relatively new. So, the purpose of the study was to investigate whether the iPad enhances the teaching and learning styles in Arabic language classes for first grade in Albushra primary school. It also examined how this new educational tool affects students' skills and achievements, how teachers and students use it in their Arabic language classes, and what are advantages and disadvantages of using it in a class and at home. The study data was collected by …

Narratives On Wheels: Mobility, Language, And Representation On Egyptian Roads, Noha Ezz El-Din Firky May 2016

Narratives On Wheels: Mobility, Language, And Representation On Egyptian Roads, Noha Ezz El-Din Firky

The Undergraduate Research Journal

In this brief exploration, I try to look at a form of popular expression which is microbuses bumper stickers and to look more specifically at the statements printed on these stickers as a form of public expression, representation, and possibly resistance on the part of their agential producers--the vehicles' drivers. I provide a preliminary content analysis for some of the statements I gathered, as well as look at the context of production and dissemination of these stickers. Finally, I try to argue for regarding these statements as a conscious mode of self-expression and self-representation for people otherwise thought of as …

Four Essays In Education And Epidemiology, Brittni Danielle Jones May 2016

Four Essays In Education And Epidemiology, Brittni Danielle Jones

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation includes four, co-authored essays in which social epidemiological concepts and methods were applied to explore the nexus of race, education, and health in the United States. In the first two essays, colleagues and I employed geospatial mapping and analysis to examine the association between past, racially segregative, housing practices and the geospatial distribution of poor, education, health, and related developmental outcomes across Ferguson, Missouri, and the surrounding St. Louis metropolitan region. We investigated this association during two, respective cross-sections of time. Results revealed the nature and distribution of class and racial disparities across the region. Based on the …

Market Effect: The Impact Of For-Profit Charter Schools On Racial And Socioeconomic Segregation, William Brett Robertson May 2016

Market Effect: The Impact Of For-Profit Charter Schools On Racial And Socioeconomic Segregation, William Brett Robertson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

For-profit charter schools are a controversial new development in public education. They combine a structural imperative to maximize profit for private shareholders with the social good of providing public education. This dissertation describes two analyses of for-profit charter schools designed to explore their impact on racial and socioeconomic segregation. The analyses utilize geographic information systems, multilevel modeling, and logistic regression to determine whether and how for-profit charter schools are likely to locate in demographically different neighborhoods, and/or educate demographically different student populations from other types of public schools. The results indicate that for-profit charter schools are less likely than other …

Spectacular Skepticism: Visual Contradiction On The Early Modern English Stage, Lauren Robertson May 2016

Spectacular Skepticism: Visual Contradiction On The Early Modern English Stage, Lauren Robertson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Early modern English culture was marked by a prolonged and multi-faceted struggle with uncertainty. This epistemological crisis took place on several fronts, crossing elite and popular discourses: in the clash of confessional convictions, the ramifications of Calvins doctrine of election, the long complications of Elizabethan succession, and the threat to traditions of natural philosophy by the burgeoning field of experimental science, to name a few sites of disturbance. A restless cultural awareness emerged that certainty, whether in earthly matters or those of God, might not be possible. In Spectacular Skepticism: Visual Contradiction on the Early Modern English Stage, I show …

Suicide Attempts From Adolescence Into Young Adulthood: A System Dynamics Perspective For Intervention And Prevention, Saras Yu Chung May 2016

Suicide Attempts From Adolescence Into Young Adulthood: A System Dynamics Perspective For Intervention And Prevention, Saras Yu Chung

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Though the reduction of suicide-related deaths has been a national priority for over a decade (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001) and over $22 million per year (National Institutes of Health, 2015) have been invested to prevent suicide, rates of suicide have not declined (CDC, 2012). In fact, for some groups of adolescents, these rates seem to be on the ride (Wasserman, Cheng, & Jiang, 2005). The ineffectiveness in reducing deaths by suicide despite increased funding and coordinated efforts suggests the need for a new perspective on examining why and how adolescents begin to desire and attempt suicide …

A Novel Ultrashort Pulsed Laser Method For Pathogen Inactivation, Shaw-Wei David Tsen May 2016

A Novel Ultrashort Pulsed Laser Method For Pathogen Inactivation, Shaw-Wei David Tsen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Emerging viral pathogens represent a constant and prominent threat to human health worldwide. There is a dire need to develop new pathogen inactivation techniques that can be used to safeguard the blood supply and to generate inactivated vaccines against these emerging viruses. Unfortunately, current techniques are inadequate because they introduce toxic/carcinogenic chemicals or alter the structure of the products, leading to loss of safety and efficacy. We have developed a novel, chemical-free ultrashort pulsed laser treatment system capable of inactivating a broad spectrum of both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. We found that ultrashort pulsed laser treatment targets the vibrational modes …

Topical, Biological And Clinical Challenges In The Management Of Patients With Acne Vulgaris, Anwar Al-Hammadi, Abla Al-Ismaily, Sameer Ramadurai, Rajesh, Rishi Jain, Lynn Mckinley-Grant, Tariq I. Mughal

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin disorders among adolescents and young adults. It is associated with substantial morbidity and, rarely, with mortality. The exact worldwide incidence and prevalence are currently unknown. Current challenges involve improving understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of acne vulgaris and developing a practical treatment consensus. Expert panel discussions were held in 2013 and 2014 among a group of scientists and clinicians from the Omani and United Arab Emirate Dermatology Societies to ascertain the current optimal management of acne vulgaris, identify clinically relevant end-points and construct suitable methodology for future clinical trial …

Human Rights In North Korea - The Pump Don't Work Cause The Vandals Took The Handles, Steven Gariepy May 2016

Human Rights In North Korea - The Pump Don't Work Cause The Vandals Took The Handles, Steven Gariepy

International Human Rights Law Journal

Many cynics of the universality of international human rights point to persistent large-scale human-rights abusing regimes, such as the Democratic Republic of North Korea, as proof that there is nothing at all universal about human rights. This essay is an attempt to root out the implications of internal national policies on the suitability of international human rights whilst reinforcing their universality. The author of this essay, a military lawyer, reaches the conclusion that the pump of universal human rights don't work within the North Korea cause the vandals took the handle.

A Proposed Enhancement To Un Treaty Enforcement: Regular Recommendations To Civil Society, Benjamin Bloomer May 2016

A Proposed Enhancement To Un Treaty Enforcement: Regular Recommendations To Civil Society, Benjamin Bloomer

International Human Rights Law Journal

The UN treaty body system is an imperative component in the enforcement of international human rights law, but it currently does not have the mechanisms sufficient for the effective internalization of international human rights law standards. One of its current mechanisms, namely, concluding observations, are by their nature of being addressed to states insufficient to ensure enforcement in state parties not politically, economically, socially, or culturally inclined to obey the recommendations. This article proposes a new publication that will better foster communication between civil society organizations and treaty bodies, allowing for a more highly coordinated effort of civil society in …

The Origin And Expansion Of The Eastern Red Fox, Adrienne Egge Kasprowicz May 2016

The Origin And Expansion Of The Eastern Red Fox, Adrienne Egge Kasprowicz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

When new populations are first identified in a region there are multiple potential sources: introduction of a non-native species, extra-range expansion of a nearby population, or demographic growth of a previously unnoticed species. Red foxes were absent or rare in the mid-eastern portion United States until the late 1800s. Their origins potentially include natural population increase/expansion, translocations from Europe, and, eventually, 20th century fur farming. In this study I attempt to identify the relative impact of native expansion versus human mediated introductions of both colonial era European foxes and early 20th century fur-farm foxes on the establishment of red …

The Second Intifada In The Palestinian City Of Ramallah: Social, Economic And Political Consequences, Saber Farhud May 2016

The Second Intifada In The Palestinian City Of Ramallah: Social, Economic And Political Consequences, Saber Farhud

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, the Second Intifada has been consigned to paragraphs within history books and the significance has been forgotten by many. While this may be due to the scarcity of sources that are out there, the history of the Second Intifada cannot be ignored. Like previous conflicts in the past between Palestinians and Israelis, the Second Intifada had a monstrous toll on the way of life for both Palestinians and Israelis. The following thesis will examine the Second Intifada and how it affected the economy, the politics, and the social life of Palestinians living in Ramallah, the de facto …

“The Grand Old Man Of Cotton”: Colonel Henry G. Hester, Economic Innovation, And The New Orleans Cotton Exchange, 1871-1932, Joshua E. Lincecum

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

After the American Civil War, and the collapse of the market in slave-produced cotton in the South, cotton merchants in New Orleans faced challenges in re-establishing the city as a central port for Southern cotton. As commodities exchanges emerged as centralized spaces for business in the 1870s, a new class of experts emerged, upon whose reports traders bought and sold newly developed securities derivatives. Henry G. Hester (1846- 1934), Secretary of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, was an integral player in the development of the methods that governed sophisticated commodities trading around the world. His career at the New Orleans …

The Unmaking Of An Embargo: How Policy Entrepreneurs At The Individual, State, And National Levels Are Creating New Paths For Policy Change In Modern United States-Cuba Relations, Kyle C. Griffith May 2016

The Unmaking Of An Embargo: How Policy Entrepreneurs At The Individual, State, And National Levels Are Creating New Paths For Policy Change In Modern United States-Cuba Relations, Kyle C. Griffith

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the Cold War antagonisms of the twentieth century, the United States (US) championed greater global economic cooperation and an embrace of free market principles to encourage economic growth. Post World War II, passage of the Bretton Woods Agreement institutionalized this political agenda effectively establishing the rules of global commerce. The result has been increased economic participation and trade liberalization. One of the last remaining vestiges of Cold War hostility and impediments to trade is the US economic embargo of Cuba, in place since 1960. Increasingly seen as a policy failure, the US has taken steps in the past two …
