Toward An Evicted Avant, Adam Charles Turl May 2016

Toward An Evicted Avant, Adam Charles Turl

Graduate School of Art Theses

Contemporary art has been evicted from both Heaven and Earth—divorced from the promise of spiritual ascension (or existential truth) as well as the emancipatory impulses of modernity (Marxism, anarchism, etc.). The artist is constantly on the make, trying to become in actuality what they feel themselves to be in essence, trapped between a rigid social position and the fluidity and openness of the contemporary art object or gesture. Within that trap are unspoken truisms about what work can and cannot be: too didactic, too earnest, or too confrontational. Contemporary art suffers an unbearable lightness of being and an unbearable weight …

Developing A Prototype System For Syndromic Surveillance And Visualization Using Social Media Data., Anup Aryal May 2016

Developing A Prototype System For Syndromic Surveillance And Visualization Using Social Media Data., Anup Aryal

Theses

Syndromic surveillance of emerging diseases is crucial for timely planning and execution of epidemic response from both local and global authorities. Traditional sources of information employed by surveillance systems are not only slow but also impractical for developing countries. Internet and social media provide a free source of a large amount of data which can be utilized for Syndromic surveillance.

We propose developing a prototype system for gathering, storing, filtering and presenting data collected from Twitter (a popular social media platform). Since social media data is inherently noisy we describe ways to preprocess the gathered data and utilize SVM (Support …

Water Quality And Fecal Coliform Levels In Georgia Oxbow Lakes Relative To Connectivity With The Savannah River, Carly B. Williams, John E. Weinstein, Claudia L. Rocha May 2016

Water Quality And Fecal Coliform Levels In Georgia Oxbow Lakes Relative To Connectivity With The Savannah River, Carly B. Williams, John E. Weinstein, Claudia L. Rocha

Georgia Journal of Science

The state of Georgia has many bodies of water that provide important wildlife habitats as well as recreational opportunities. The objective of the current study was to investigate water quality and fecal coliform levels in oxbow lakes relative to their connectivity to the Savannah River. For most water quality parameters, no differences were observed between the Savannah River and the oxbow lakes. However, pH and turbidity values were lower in the oxbow lakes (both connected and disconnected) relative to the Savannah River. Fecal coliform values between connected oxbow lakes and the Savannah River were similar to each other and significantly …

Saving Salmo: Federalism And The Conservation Of Maine's Atlantic Salmon, Alison Rieser May 2016

Saving Salmo: Federalism And The Conservation Of Maine's Atlantic Salmon, Alison Rieser

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

In the last decade of the twentieth century, state and federal officials reluctantly acknowledged that restoring wild salmon would take more than making more fish. The anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) once flourished in river systems throughout New England, but the economies of the nineteenth century unwittingly reduced the salmon’s range to a few river systems in Maine. In 2000, the remnant populations that returned to eight of the minor coastal river systems of eastern Maine were listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA). The bitter fight that broke out between State of Maine officials …

Friend Of The Court: An Array Of Arguments To Urge Reconsideration Of The Moody Beach Cases And Expand Public Use Rights In Maine's Intertidal Zone, Orlando E. Delogu May 2016

Friend Of The Court: An Array Of Arguments To Urge Reconsideration Of The Moody Beach Cases And Expand Public Use Rights In Maine's Intertidal Zone, Orlando E. Delogu

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

In the late-1980s, two cases decided by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court (Law Court) delineated littoral upland owner property rights vis-àvis public use rights in the intertidal zone. The cases involved intertidal land in Wells, Maine, known as “Moody Beach” and were titled Bell v. Town of Wells. Hereinafter, they will be referred to as Bell I and Bell II, respectively. Upland owner rights, to the surprise of even many upland owners, were significantly expanded; public use rights, to the disappointment of many, were correspondingly narrowed. The two cases were controversial at the time. The Marine Law Institute of the …

Deep Danger: Intensified Competition In The South China Sea And Implications For China, Guifang (Julia) Xue

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

The South China Sea (SCS) has long been regarded as a major source of tension and instability in the region. Over the years, numerous attempts to manage the SCS, prevent regional confrontation, and foster cooperation among concerned states have been recorded, but no promising results have been observed. Since 2009, an upsurge in tension has sparked concern that the area may become a flashpoint with the potential for global consequences. This Article examines the underlying issues surrounding the intensified competition in the SCS, and analyzes the implications of the ongoing tension for Chinese interests in the region. Part II explains …

Arctic Bottleneck: Protecting The Bering Strait Region From Increased Vessel Traffic, Andrew Hartsig, Ivy Fredrickson, Carmen Yeung, Stan Senner May 2016

Arctic Bottleneck: Protecting The Bering Strait Region From Increased Vessel Traffic, Andrew Hartsig, Ivy Fredrickson, Carmen Yeung, Stan Senner

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

Climate change in the circumpolar Arctic is reducing seasonal sea ice coverage and leading to longer periods when the ocean surface is relatively ice-free. The reduction in the temporal and geographic extent of sea ice is in turn driving increased interest in the pursuit of commercial and industrial activities throughout the Arctic, including oil and gas exploration and development, mining, tourism, and shipping. While these activities are already affecting various parts of the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Strait and surrounding waters are likely to experience especially significant impacts due to the increased vessel traffic associated with the expansion of commercial …

A Succinct, Holistic Look At Climate Change Legislation, Chris Henry May 2016

A Succinct, Holistic Look At Climate Change Legislation, Chris Henry

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The legislative process in the United States moves slowly, and any legislation that does become law is still subject to change along with the partisan makeup of Congress. Due to the time-sensitive nature of climate change, climate change activists should look to alternate ways to implement policies or try to circumvent the legislative process entirely. First, this article provides the basics of climate change legislation, and discusses the unique problems facing climate change activists. Then, this article describes the history of climate change legislation in the United States. Next, this article explores ways to change climate change policies without resorting …

Domestic Tranquility: The Goals Of Home Protection, Burke Bindbeutel May 2016

Domestic Tranquility: The Goals Of Home Protection, Burke Bindbeutel

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This Article proposes an explanation for the special place of the home by surveying the development of privacy jurisprudence and grounding that development in our political tradition. Our earliest conception of rights began with a kind of home protection. But then there was a crucial shift into the abstract realm of privacy. Legal home protection has evolved beyond a ceasefire between state and citizen. Where before it was enough to stay the government’s intrusion into the home, there is today a recognition of the value of the intimate association of free individuals and the trust in government which arises from …

A New Take On Testing: Evaluating Design Systems In Response To The Recent Natural Disaster In Nepal, Jazmine L. Brown

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

In this thesis project I analyze the destruction of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, specifically in the structural and architectural collapse. I have focused my research on the areas with greatest documented destruction and vulnerability, specifically Kathmandu and the settlements in the Middle Hills. The introduction of a new lateral testing mechanism can provided much needed information on the seismic strengths of vernacular construction methods.

Ecology Of Conflict: Marine Food Supply Affects Human-Wildlife Interactions On Land, Kyle A. Artelle, Sean Anderson, John D. Reynolds, Andrew B. Cooper, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont May 2016

Ecology Of Conflict: Marine Food Supply Affects Human-Wildlife Interactions On Land, Kyle A. Artelle, Sean Anderson, John D. Reynolds, Andrew B. Cooper, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont

Human-Animal Interactions Collection

Human-wildlife conflicts impose considerable costs to people and wildlife worldwide. Most research focuses on proximate causes, offering limited generalizable understanding of ultimate drivers. We tested three competing hypotheses (problem individuals, regional population saturation, limited food supply) that relate to underlying processes of human-grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) conflict, using data from British Columbia, Canada, between 1960–2014. We found most support for the limited food supply hypothesis: in bear populations that feed on spawning salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), the annual number of bears/km2killed due to conflicts with humans increased by an average of 20% (6–32% [95% CI]) for each 50% …

De-Westernizing The Far East, Jericho K. Kakaio-Edwards

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Isolated by the Tibetan highlands which frame Yunnan’s northwest fringes, the ethnic minorities who call the region home live in rural settings ranging from rice-terraced fields to tropical forests; lifestyle unchanged for hundreds of years. However, with globalization causing an exposure to western standards of living, in conjunction with the country’s predisposition towards all things foreign, the people of Yunnan have begun forgoing generations of vernacular architecture in favor of modern materials and regionally defunct construction methods. Here, we will seek to address this foible of architectural development by offering theoretical construction methods for housing types found throughout the region, …

On The Variability Of Pacific Ocean Tides At Seasonal To Decadal Time Scales: Observed Vs Modelled, Adam Thomas Devlin May 2016

On The Variability Of Pacific Ocean Tides At Seasonal To Decadal Time Scales: Observed Vs Modelled, Adam Thomas Devlin

Dissertations and Theses

Ocean tides worldwide have exhibited secular changes in the past century, simultaneous with a global secular rise in mean sea level (MSL). The combination of these two factors contributes to higher water levels, and may increase threats to coastal regions and populations over the next century. Equally as important as these long-term changes are the short-term fluctuations in sea levels and tidal properties. These fluctuations may interact to yield locally extreme water level events, especially when combined with storm surge. This study, presented in three parts, examines the relationships between tidal anomalies and MSL anomalies on yearly and monthly timescales, …

From Empty Lot To Garden Plot: Urban Agriculture In Chula Vista, Jennifer E. Gutierrez May 2016

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project is an exploration of how agriculture can be incorporated into the fabric of the city of Chula Vista, which has both uniquely urban and suburban areas. The proposal is to integrate agriculture as a design tool to reconnect to the city’s agricultural past and as a model for cities of the future. First, I discuss Chula Vista’s history and contemporary context, including demographics. I review the existing urban agriculture policies Chula Vista has and compare them to other cities in California. The second part of the project is concerned with how to choose and develop a site for …

Paleoethnobotany In Interior Alaska, Caitlin R. Holloway May 2016

Paleoethnobotany In Interior Alaska, Caitlin R. Holloway

Anthropology

Vegetation and plant resources can impact forager mobility and subsistence strategies. However, misconceptions about the preservation of organics in subarctic archaeological contexts and underestimations of the importance of plant resources to foraging societies limit paleoethnobotanical research in high-latitude environments. This research draws upon concepts from human behavioral ecology to address questions relating to site seasonality, plant resource use, land use, and deposition and taphonomy. The model developed in this thesis outlines expectations of seasonal archaeobotanical assemblages for Late Pleistocene and Holocene sites in interior Alaska. I consider these expectations in light of plant macroremains found in anthropogenic features from Components …

Assessing Year To Year Variability Of Inertial Oscillation In The Chukchi Sea Using The Wavelet Transform, David Leonard May 2016

Assessing Year To Year Variability Of Inertial Oscillation In The Chukchi Sea Using The Wavelet Transform, David Leonard

Mathematics and Statistics

Three years of ocean drifter data from the Chukchi Sea were examined using the wavelet transform to investigate inertial oscillation. There was an increasing trend in number, duration, and hence total proportion of time spent in inertial oscillation events. Additionally, the Chukchi Sea seems to facilitate inertial oscillation that is easier to discern using north-south velocity records rather than east-west velocity records. The data used in this analysis was transformed using wavelets, which are generally used as a qualitative statistical method. Because of this, in addition to measurement error and random ocean noise, there is an additional source of variability …

Remote Sensing Of Lake Dynamics In Alaska, Prajna R. Lindgren May 2016

Remote Sensing Of Lake Dynamics In Alaska, Prajna R. Lindgren

Geosciences

Lakes are abundant in high northern latitude permafrost regions. They are important ecosystem components forming a complex and dynamic landscape with repeated cycles of lake formation and drainage affecting regional hydrological and terrestrial characteristics, biogeochemical processes and carbon cycling, wildlife habitats, and human communities living in the permafrost region. Remote sensing is a useful tool to map the spatial distribution of lakes and assess its change, understand lake dynamics, and to extract useful information to study their associated feedbacks in a changing climate. In this dissertation, I focused on remote sensing studies associated with (1) methane ebullition from a thermokarst …

Diet And Habitat Of The Little Brown Bat (Myotis Lucifugus) In Interior And Northern Alaska, Rachel Shively May 2016

Diet And Habitat Of The Little Brown Bat (Myotis Lucifugus) In Interior And Northern Alaska, Rachel Shively

Biological Sciences

Little brown bats are sensitive to cold winters but consistent records of roosts in interior Alaska for 30 years indicate that the range of this species expands into the subarctic. We hypothesized that the little brown bat in interior and northern Alaska has adapted to high environmental demands by shifting foraging strategies. We analyzed guano to describe prey composition by microhistology, DNA analysis, stable isotope analysis, and image fragment recognition software. Alaskan bats consumed moths and flies, which was similar to the diet of southern conspecifics. However, bats in Alaska also consumed spiders. The stable isotopes of N and C …

Late Quaternary And Future Biome Simulations For Alaska And Eastern Russia, Amy S. Hendricks May 2016

Late Quaternary And Future Biome Simulations For Alaska And Eastern Russia, Amy S. Hendricks

Atmospheric Sciences

Arctic biomes across a region including Alaska and Eastern Russia were investigated using the BIOME4 biogeochemical and biogeography vegetation model. This study investigated past (the last 21,000 years), present, and future vegetation distributions in the study area, using climate forcing from five CMIP5 models (CCSM4, GISS-E2-R, MIROC-ESM, MPI-ESM, and MRI-CGCM3). The present-day BIOME4 simulations were generally consistent with current vegetation observations in the study region characterized by evergreen and deciduous taiga and shrub tundras. Paleoclimatological simulations were compared with pollen data samples collected in the study region. Pre-industrial biome simulations are generally similar to the modern reconstruction but differ by …
