From The Desire To Mark Essex: The Catalysts Of Militarization For The New Orleans Police Department, Derrick W.A. Martin May 2016

From The Desire To Mark Essex: The Catalysts Of Militarization For The New Orleans Police Department, Derrick W.A. Martin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

The ultimate goal in the South was to end segregation, but nationwide equal-rights were the common goal of all African-Americans. Nonviolent protests and over aggressive police departments became the norm within the African-American community. Understated in the history of the Civil Rights Era is the role of armed resistance and Black Nationalism. Marcus Garvey, Stokely Carmichael, Huey P. Newton, and Malcolm X were Black Nationalists that led the charge of Black Nationalism worldwide. The Deacons of Defense, the Lowndes County Freedom Organization (LCFO) and the Black Panther Party for Self Defense transformed the social makeup of the country and …

“Fixing The Italian Problem”: Archbishop Of New Orleans John W. Shaw And The Oblates Of Mary Immaculate, 1918-1933, Emily E. Nuttli

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1918, Archbishop Shaw invited the Texas Catholic religious order, Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, to New Orleans to manage the St. Louis Cathedral and its filial parish for Southern Italians, St. Mary’s Church. This thesis will look at the personalities and preferentialism that affected this early 20th century transfer of religious power from secular priests to a religious order. Comparing the language used by Archbishop Shaw in correspondence with Oblate Fathers with the language he used with his secular priests will determine that Shaw displayed favoritism in his decision to invite the Oblates. This decision was affected by …

It's Always Better With A Good Dm, David Colannino May 2016

It's Always Better With A Good Dm, David Colannino

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It’s Always Better With A Good DM is about our relationship with objects and maps as a vector for fantasy. Beginning from the premise that humans understand the world via narrative, I am concerned with the loss of imagination in adulthood in lieu of ideology, which is no more real than stories of future and fantastic places.

"Romantic Realities": Sherlock Holmes And Urban Imagination, Samantha Vaughn Gates May 2016

"Romantic Realities": Sherlock Holmes And Urban Imagination, Samantha Vaughn Gates

Honors Theses

My thesis explores excerpts of the Sherlock Holmes canon through literary and historical lenses, and relies on close readings to investigate the representation of urbanity in the stories. For my work, I rely on the term "urban imagination" as I discuss the way that Arthur Conan Doyle places representations of real London places adjacent to fantasy urban locations of his own creation, and the effect that this has on the narratives and on Sherlock himself. Doyle uses urban imagination in his romanticization of city life, and his manifestation of a London particularly suited to Sherlock's needs. The kind of London …

Black Hole In The Rising Sun: Japan And The Hague Convention On Child Abduction, Paul Hanley May 2016

Black Hole In The Rising Sun: Japan And The Hague Convention On Child Abduction, Paul Hanley

International Human Rights Law Journal

Japan has long been criticized for its failure to address the issue of international child abduction. In response to international pressure, Japan adopted the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Parental Abduction in April 2014. Despite its ratification of the treaty, great concern remains whether Japan is willing to comply with the legal obligations imposed by the Convention. This article examines Japan’s struggle with the issue of international child abduction, analyzing its traditional approach to family matters such as its “divorce by conference” system, which permits couples to negotiate issues of child custody and visitation without any judicial …

The “True American”: William H. Christy And The Rise Of The Louisiana Nativist Movement, 1835-1855, Brett R. Todd May 2016

The “True American”: William H. Christy And The Rise Of The Louisiana Nativist Movement, 1835-1855, Brett R. Todd

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In New Orleans during the 1830s, Irish immigration became a source of tension between newly settled Anglo-American elites and the long-established Creole hegemony. Out of this tension, in 1835 Anglo-American elites established the Louisiana Native American Association (LNAA) to block Irish immigrants from gaining citizenship and, ultimately, the right to vote. The Whig Party, whom most Louisiana Anglo-Americans supported, promoted nativism to prevent naturalized Irish from voting Democrat, the preferred party of the Creoles. This study will argue that the LNAA, under the leadership of William H. Christy, was not merely a reaction to increased Irish immigration, but was also …

Natural Elements Representing The Cycle Of Life And Death Through Whitman’S “Song Of Myself” And “When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom’D”, Priya Patel May 2016

Natural Elements Representing The Cycle Of Life And Death Through Whitman’S “Song Of Myself” And “When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom’D”, Priya Patel

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In Emerson’s essay “The Poet,” he writes that we have “no genius in America” and that we need to find a poet who can be America’s Shakespeare. He continues to say that “America is a poem in our eyes; its ample geography dazzles the imagination…” Not long after Emerson published “The Poet,” Walt Whitman emerged becoming “The Poet” that Emerson was seeking to find. Whitman soon became the “one who would sing of the new country in a new voice.”

In 1855, Whitman published his first edition of Leaves of Grass and shed light to the wonderful landscapes that America …

Determining The Impact Of Latitude On Parturition Timing In Captive North American River Otters: A Statistical Analysis Of Aza Studbook Records, Jordan I. Bailey May 2016

Determining The Impact Of Latitude On Parturition Timing In Captive North American River Otters: A Statistical Analysis Of Aza Studbook Records, Jordan I. Bailey

Theses

Historically, North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widely dispersed throughout the North American continent. Trapping pressures and urbanization have led to regional exclusion of North American river otter populations from historic habitats, leading the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to spearhead conservation and captive breeding efforts to maintain genetic diversity of the aquatic mustelid. Difficulties in consistently breeding captive North American river otters have spotlighted a need to understand how geography and life history of adult individuals influence reproductive events. This study analyzed the AZA studbook records for all litters born in captivity from 2008 to 2014 (N = …

Immersions In Global Equality And Social Justice: A Model Of Change, Kevin Guerrieri, Sandra Sgoutas-Emch

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

In the work for global equality and social justice, how should “change” be understood? Who determines what must change or be changed? In the efforts to carry out social change, what is the academy’s relationship with the community, society at large, and the broader world? This article parts from these and other key questions and then proposes a model of change that can be used as a lens for examining any project, program, or organization with the aim of creating positive change that is meaningful, sustainable, and holistic. The article provides both an explanation of the underlying interdisciplinary theoretical framework …

A Noble Dream: The Inter-American Studies Program At Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (1958-1985), Colin T. White

Honors Theses

This essay explores the rise and fall of the Inter-American studies program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Inter-American Studies Program attempted to bridge two distinctive bodies of academic literature when Dr. Albert Bork first envisioned it. Unlike other programs founded in the 1950s, SIU’s Inter-American Studies program was an academic experiment challenging that emerging trend. Regardless of its failure, the program’s original idea was innovative.

Climate And Crisis: Environmental Degradation And Humanitarian Disaster In Darfur, Talia Macauley, Environmental Studies May 2016

Climate And Crisis: Environmental Degradation And Humanitarian Disaster In Darfur, Talia Macauley, Environmental Studies

Student Theses 2015-Present

As one of the largest humanitarian conflicts in the world, the situation in Darfur, Sudan continues to be characterized by a growing ethnically driven conflict, by a persistent number of displaced persons, and most importantly—at least for the sake of this thesis—by a widespread and significant number of environmental issues. While the former two characteristics seem to be at the forefront of humanitarian assistance programs, the latter is severely lacking in both acknowledgement and incorporation by the aid sector. In an effort to make apparent the need to incorporate environmental issues into humanitarian projects, this thesis uses the United Nations …

Validating Visibility And Voice: A Community-Based Participatory Research Study To Address The Health Access Of Cambodian Americans, Jack J. Lu May 2016

Validating Visibility And Voice: A Community-Based Participatory Research Study To Address The Health Access Of Cambodian Americans, Jack J. Lu

Doctoral Dissertations

Since 1975, Cambodians have sought survival in the United States by escaping from extreme forms of violence, torture, and other traumas from the Khmer Rouge genocide and refugee camps. Although some have lived within the United States for several decades, many Cambodian Americans continue to experience inadequate access to health that results in ongoing poor health outcomes, such as physical suffering, psychological distress, and premature death. Rooted in social determinants (e.g., social economic status, education, stress), these poor health outcomes have led to disproportionate rates of illness (i.e. health disparities) when compared to the general population. Improving health access, defined …

Building Constituency At Yellowstone National Park: Predicting Visitor Support Now And Into The Future, Jacob Daniel Jorgenson, Norma P. Nickerson May 2016

Building Constituency At Yellowstone National Park: Predicting Visitor Support Now And Into The Future, Jacob Daniel Jorgenson, Norma P. Nickerson

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

The purpose of this study was to explore how visitors support Yellowstone National Park, differences in support among groups, and the relationships between support and various behavioral and psychological concepts. An on-site and mail-back survey was conducted. Results indicate that highly salient memories lead to place attachment and are significantly related to increasing park support. High park supporters tended to be older, more experienced with the park, have geotouristic tendencies, and are generally more involved in recreational activities. Practical implications from this research show a need to engage visitors and provide experiences that are likely to lead to park support.

Assessing Going-To-The-Sun Road Travelers’ Attitudes, Knowledge, And Perceptions Of Bicycling, Brian Battaglia, Norma P. Nickerson

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Visitors of the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) are primarily scenic drivers, yet niche groups of bicyclists have a stake in sharing the GTSR. Conducting a quantitative survey assessment on the bicycling attitudes of visitors produced key findings for determining visitor support for bicycling along the GTSR. Park officials are in a position to evaluate data on bicycling attitudes for visitor management and transportation decision making along the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Bioswales For Stormwater Remediation And Infiltration: Assessing Regulatory Climate And Quantifying Filtration Capacity Of A Claremont Bioswale, Skyler Lewis, Boyu Liu, Paul Picciano, Liana Solis, Char Miller

Environmental Analysis Program Senior Projects

Watershed management is critical in ensuring a sustainable water supply. This project is designed to assess the impact of bioswales in the context of Southern California’s climate. The patterns of droughts and floods make these green infrastructure appealing as they offer potential to boost water quality and regenerate local aquifers, while reducing the area of impermeable surfaces in our urban landscape. As bioswales have not been commonly incorporated into infrastructure development, our project focuses on a relatively new bioswale, added in 2012 and located on Pomona College’s campus, to serve as our case study in determining the viability of bioswales …

Observational Analysis Of Inter-Annual Boundary Layer Processes Within The Glaciated Llanganuco Valley, Peru, Jason Covert May 2016

Observational Analysis Of Inter-Annual Boundary Layer Processes Within The Glaciated Llanganuco Valley, Peru, Jason Covert

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The tropical glaciers of the Cordillera Blanca, Peru are rapidly receding as a result of significant mass and energy imbalances caused by climate change. The glacier recession is raising concerns among the scientific community and those living in the Rio Santa Valley of Ancash, Peru due to the likely water shortages in the near future as a result of disappearing glaciers and the subsequent reduction of fresh water discharge. In response to the concern, much research has sought to constrain the atmospheric forcing of the glacier surface energy balance (SEB) in effort to model future glacier loss. There is little …
