On Using Tree Visualisation Techniques To Support Source Code Comprehension, Ivan Bacher, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

This paper presents a design study that investigates the use of compact tree visualisations to provide software de-velopers with an overview of the static structure of a sourcecode document within a code editor in order to facilitate source code understanding and navigation. A prototype is presented which utilises an icicle tree visualisation to encode the control structure hierarchy of a source code document, as well as a circular treemap visualisation to encode the scope hierarchy of a source code document. An overview of the prototype and its functionality is given as well as a detailed discussion on the design rationale …

Comparison Of Cox Regression And Discrete Time Survival Models, Hong Ye Jan 2016

Comparison Of Cox Regression And Discrete Time Survival Models, Hong Ye

Wayne State University Dissertations

A standard analysis of prostate cancer biochemical failure data is done by conducting two approaches in which risk factors or covariates are measured. Cox regression and discrete-time survival models were compared under different attributes: sample size, time periods, and parameters in the model. The person-period data was reconstructed when examining the same data in discrete-time survival model. Twenty-four numerical examples covering a variety of sample sizes, time periods, and number of parameters displayed the closeness of Cox regression and discrete-time survival methods in situations typical of the cancer study.

The Use Of Personality Profiling As A Means To Assess Person-Organizational Fit To Inform Personnel Decisions, Rebecca J. Early Jan 2016

The Use Of Personality Profiling As A Means To Assess Person-Organizational Fit To Inform Personnel Decisions, Rebecca J. Early

Wayne State University Dissertations

Profile matching refers to personnel selection based on candidate similarity to a pre-determined pattern. Although previous investigations support the use of personality data through univariate, linear-based selection methodologies, there is a paucity of research supporting the use of profile matching in a selection context, and very limited selection research has utilized a person-centered approach. Still, this support is necessary, given that a recent study estimated that the majority of consultative vendor organizations utilize some form of profile matching using personality patterns (Kulas, 2013). After generating profiles from the candidate pool, findings from the current study suggest that profiles have potential …

Neuronal Insult Either By Exposure To Lead Or By Direct Neuronal Damage Cause Genome-Wide Changes In Dna Methylation And Histone 3 Lysine 36 Trimethylation, Arko Sen Jan 2016

Neuronal Insult Either By Exposure To Lead Or By Direct Neuronal Damage Cause Genome-Wide Changes In Dna Methylation And Histone 3 Lysine 36 Trimethylation, Arko Sen

Wayne State University Dissertations

Prenatal and postnatal exposure to pervasive neuro-toxicants such as Lead (Pb) has been reported to causes extensive and diverse changes in the epigenetic profile. Among epigenetic modification, DNA methylation (5mC) is perhaps the most widely studied and has been proposed to be potential early biomarkers for Pb toxicity. Several studies have demonstrated the association between Pb-exposure and 5mC. However most of these studies are restricted to looking at a specific set of target genes or repetitive elements. Therefore, one of the main objectives of our study was to use an unbiased genome-wide approach to look at Pb-exposure associated changes in …

Identification Of Lead-Sensitive Expression And Splicing Quantitative Trait Loci In Drosophila Melanogaster By Analysis Of Rna-Seq Data, Wen Qu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Lead exposure has long been one of the most important topics in global public health since it is a potent developmental neurotoxin. Here, we conducted an expression QTL (eQTLs) analysis, which is genome-wide association analysis of genetic variants with differential gene expression, in the male heads of 79 Drosophila melanogaster recombinant inbred lines originally from eight parental strains in the presence or absence of developmental exposure to 250 µM lead acetate. The aim was to study the effects of lead exposure on gene expression and identify the lead-responsive genes. After detecting 1,536 cis-eQTLs and 952 trans-eQTLs (1000 permutation threshold at …

Variables That Impact The Implementation Of Project-Based Learning In High School Science, Kellie Renee Cunningham Jan 2016

Variables That Impact The Implementation Of Project-Based Learning In High School Science, Kellie Renee Cunningham

Wayne State University Dissertations

Wagner and colleagues (2006) state the mediocrity of teaching and instructional leadership is the central problem that must be addressed if we are to improve student achievement. Educational reform efforts have been initiated to improve student performance and to hold teachers and school leaders accountable for student achievement (Wagner et al., 2006). Specifically, in the area of science, goals for improving student learning have led reformers to establish standards for what students should know and be able to do, as well as what instructional methods should be used. Key concepts and principles have been identified for student learning. Additionally, reformers …

Oxygen Transport, Shear Stress, And Metabolism In Perfused Hepatocyte-Seeded Scaffolds With Radial Pore Architecture: Experimental And Computational Analyses, Chijioke Mbanu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Several modalities have been proposed as treatments or temporary stop-gap for patients suffering from liver failure until a suitable organ is available. However there is still an urgent need for an off-the-shelf device that can accommodate clinically relevant cell numbers, be cultured at physiological oxygen tensions and, can be fully integrated into and heal the injured hepatic space. In this study we investigated the effects that convective and direct oxygenation had on hepatocyte functionality, morphology and viability while cultured in bulk 3D chitosan scaffolds and perfusion bioreactor systems. Cylindrical chitosan scaffolds with radial directed pore structures were fabricated by a …

Small Things of Great Importance: Toy Advertising in China, 1910s-1930s by Valentina Boretti

From the turn of the twentieth century, playthings acquired a key role within the Chinese childrearing discourse as tools to train children, the prospective rescuers of China from its perceived decline. As a possibly unintended result, both children and toys acquired a marketing value: advertising employed them as icons to publicize a wide array of products. At the same time, the nascent toy industry “poached” the new discourse to brand its playthings as symbols of (made-in-China) educated progress, seeking to convince …

Water Demand Forecasting In Al-Ain City, United Arab Emirates, Hebah Ibrahim Younis

Theses

Al-Ain city is the second largest city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the third in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Currently, desalination plants are the only source of municipal water in Al-Ain city with an average daily supply of 170 MIG. The expected natural population growth, in addition to future projects, will certainly put additional stress on the water resources in the city. Therefore, Al-Ain city seems to be in an urgent need for estimations of future water demands for achieving sustainable development. The main aim of this thesis is to introduce a water demand forecasting model to …

Effect Of Phytosanitary Irradiation And Methyl Bromide Fumigation On The Physical, Sensory, And Microbiological Quality Of Blueberries And Sweet Cherries, Karen Thang, Kimberly Au, Cyril Rakovski, Anuradha Prakash

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Background

The objective of this study was to determine whether irradiation could serve as a suitable phytosanitary treatment alternative to methyl bromide (MB) fumigation for blueberries and sweet cherry and also to determine the effect of phytosanitary irradiation treatment on survival of Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes on these fruit. ‘Bluecrop’ blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) and ‘Sweetheart’ cherries (Prunus avium) were irradiated at 0.4 kGy or fumigated with methyl bromide and evaluated for quality attributes during storage.

Results

Irradiation caused an immediate decrease in firmness of both fruit without further significant change during storage. Fumigated fruit, in …

Enabling Microblogging-Based Peer Feedback In Face-To-Face Classrooms, Tian Luo Jan 2016

Enabling Microblogging-Based Peer Feedback In Face-To-Face Classrooms, Tian Luo

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to understand student interaction and learning in microblogging-based peer feedback sessions. The researcher examined through a case study how students interacted and provided peer feedback for each other when Twitter was enabled as a backchannel; students were also asked to report how they perceived their experience. The findings suggested that students participated actively in the microblogging-based peer feedback sessions. Although Twitter supported cognitive and corrective feedback, affective feedback was dominant. Student interaction on Twitter tended to be brief and involve low-level cognitive thinking in unguided, naturalistic learning contexts. Overall, students had a positive attitude …

Palestinian Opinion On Peace: Analysis Of Survey Data From The Occupied Palestinian Territories, Kaylee G. Brink Jan 2016

Palestinian Opinion On Peace: Analysis Of Survey Data From The Occupied Palestinian Territories, Kaylee G. Brink

University Honors Theses

There have been many articles on the influence of public opinion on Palestinian peace with Israel, but none have been written using data since the early 2000s. This gap is important because many Israeli and Palestinian citizens have increasingly lost hope in the Oslo peace process. This article uses data from 2006 to 2012 to analyze changes in Palestinian support for peace with Israel. Variables include political affiliation, gender, religiosity, economic situation, and area of residence. The Arab Barometer and the Palestinian Center originally gathered all of the data for Policy and Survey Research used in this paper. A binomial …

The Nature Of Kinematic Waves In Glaciers And Their Application To Understanding The Nisqually Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington, Brita Ilyse Horlings Jan 2016

The Nature Of Kinematic Waves In Glaciers And Their Application To Understanding The Nisqually Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington, Brita Ilyse Horlings

University Honors Theses

The Nisqually Glacier is one of the best studied glaciers on Mt. Rainier. Data was first collected on the glacier in 1857 and since then a number of kinematic waves have been observed but not extensively studied. The purpose of the thesis is to numerically model the conditions that favor or restrict kinematic wave propagation/initiation and subsequently model the relationship between kinematic wave behavior and the Nisqually Glacier. The numerical models used in this study are 2-D and use bedrock elevation, mass balance, basal sliding, and other equations to simulate alpine glaciers. A perturbation is added instantaneously for a specified …

Stephen Langton, The Chanter Circle, And The Semiotics Of Violence In A Crusading Culture, Andrew Thornebrooke Jan 2016

Stephen Langton, The Chanter Circle, And The Semiotics Of Violence In A Crusading Culture, Andrew Thornebrooke

University Honors Theses

The influence of Peter the Chanter's (d. 1197) pedagogy and moral theology on the development of the faculty of theology at the University of Paris is being increasingly well documented. Much work remains to be done, however, in developing our understanding of how the teachings of the Parisian master influenced the theological views of one of his most politically active disciples, Stephen Langton (c. 1150-1228). This research offers an intensive semiotic analysis of violent imagery and allusions to the Holy Land within the sermons of Langton, found in BnF Lat. MSS 14470 and 14593, as well as the decrees and …

The Effects Of Rubric Use On Calibration Accuracy, Katrice Hawthorne, Linda Bol, Shana L. Pribesh Jan 2016

The Effects Of Rubric Use On Calibration Accuracy, Katrice Hawthorne, Linda Bol, Shana L. Pribesh

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The utility of rubric-referenced calibration and the interaction between achievement and calibration accuracy were investigated. Students (N = 596) were assigned to one of three rubric conditions: (1) a global condition, (2) a general criteria condition, or (3) a detailed criteria condition. Students in all three conditions provided holistic predictions and postdictions. Students in the rubric conditions also provided criteria-based predictions and postdictions. Whereas calibrating by condition did not affect calibration accuracy overall, significant effects were found between calibration accuracy by criteria and achievement level. Lower achieving students had better calibration accuracy in the detailed rubric criteria condition when compared …

Energy-Saving Occupant Behaviour In Offices: Change Strategies, Mark Mulville, Keith Jones, Gesche Huebner, Joanne Powell-Grieg Jan 2016

Energy-Saving Occupant Behaviour In Offices: Change Strategies, Mark Mulville, Keith Jones, Gesche Huebner, Joanne Powell-Grieg

Articles

As regulated energy consumption in buildings is reduced, the proportional importance of unregulated energy consumption increases. Reducing unregulated energy use in the commercial office requires an understanding of the factors that influence workplace behaviour. To date these factors have been assumed to be similar to those that influence behaviour in the home. However, the social dynamics of the workplace are different to those in the home. This study examines the degree to which theories of behaviour change generated largely in a domestic building setting could be used as the basis for designing interventions to reduce unregulated energy consumption in the …
