Stephen Langton, The Chanter Circle, And The Semiotics Of Violence In A Crusading Culture, Andrew Thornebrooke Jan 2016

Stephen Langton, The Chanter Circle, And The Semiotics Of Violence In A Crusading Culture, Andrew Thornebrooke

University Honors Theses

The influence of Peter the Chanter's (d. 1197) pedagogy and moral theology on the development of the faculty of theology at the University of Paris is being increasingly well documented. Much work remains to be done, however, in developing our understanding of how the teachings of the Parisian master influenced the theological views of one of his most politically active disciples, Stephen Langton (c. 1150-1228). This research offers an intensive semiotic analysis of violent imagery and allusions to the Holy Land within the sermons of Langton, found in BnF Lat. MSS 14470 and 14593, as well as the decrees and …

The Effects Of Rubric Use On Calibration Accuracy, Katrice Hawthorne, Linda Bol, Shana L. Pribesh Jan 2016

The Effects Of Rubric Use On Calibration Accuracy, Katrice Hawthorne, Linda Bol, Shana L. Pribesh

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The utility of rubric-referenced calibration and the interaction between achievement and calibration accuracy were investigated. Students (N = 596) were assigned to one of three rubric conditions: (1) a global condition, (2) a general criteria condition, or (3) a detailed criteria condition. Students in all three conditions provided holistic predictions and postdictions. Students in the rubric conditions also provided criteria-based predictions and postdictions. Whereas calibrating by condition did not affect calibration accuracy overall, significant effects were found between calibration accuracy by criteria and achievement level. Lower achieving students had better calibration accuracy in the detailed rubric criteria condition when compared …

Energy-Saving Occupant Behaviour In Offices: Change Strategies, Mark Mulville, Keith Jones, Gesche Huebner, Joanne Powell-Grieg Jan 2016

Energy-Saving Occupant Behaviour In Offices: Change Strategies, Mark Mulville, Keith Jones, Gesche Huebner, Joanne Powell-Grieg

Articles

As regulated energy consumption in buildings is reduced, the proportional importance of unregulated energy consumption increases. Reducing unregulated energy use in the commercial office requires an understanding of the factors that influence workplace behaviour. To date these factors have been assumed to be similar to those that influence behaviour in the home. However, the social dynamics of the workplace are different to those in the home. This study examines the degree to which theories of behaviour change generated largely in a domestic building setting could be used as the basis for designing interventions to reduce unregulated energy consumption in the …

Main Contractor Selection On Construction Projects When Adapting An Integrated Project Delivery Procurement Strategy Within An Irish Context., Fiacra Mcdonnell

Other Resources

The Irish construction industry has experienced turbulent years over the last decade from an economic viewpoint. The industry has tended to be conservative in nature and slow to embrace change. However international influences have exposed Irish construction professionals to new more efficient systems and technologies, which although slow to take hold have started to gain traction within certain sectors of the industry. This study has focussed on the innovative procurement route known as Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and its facilitator; Building Information Modelling (BIM). The overall aim of this study was to investigate whether Integrated Project Delivery was a viable …

Iron In The Soul, Noel Brady Jan 2016

Iron In The Soul, Noel Brady

Articles

This paper re-examines the iconic use of cruciform columns in the famous Barcelona Pavilion and the other ‘German’ projects of the architect Mies Van der Rohe. It extrapolates for the material itself to construct a theory about the meaning behind their design and iconography linking it to Shinkel and a coded national identify.

Interpreting Megalithic Tomb Orientations And Siting Within Broader Cultural Contexts, Frank Prendergast Jan 2016

Interpreting Megalithic Tomb Orientations And Siting Within Broader Cultural Contexts, Frank Prendergast

Articles

This paper assesses the measured axial orientations and siting of Irish passage tombs. The distribution of monuments with passages/entrances directed at related tombs/cairns is shown. Where this phenomenon occurs, the targeted structure is invariably located at a higher elevation on the skyline and this could suggest a symbolic and hierarchical relationship in their relative siting in the landscape. Additional analysis of astronomical declinations at a national scale has identified tombs with an axial alignment towards the rising and setting positions of the Sun at the winter and summer solstices. A criteria-based framework is developed which potentially allows for these types …

Predicting Undergraduate Statistics Course Performance And Transfer Through Students' Implicit Theories And Achievement Goals, Rachel L. Ankney Jan 2016

Predicting Undergraduate Statistics Course Performance And Transfer Through Students' Implicit Theories And Achievement Goals, Rachel L. Ankney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Students' implicit theories of intelligence (TOI), implicit theories of statistics ability (TOSA), and achievement goals were analyzed as individual differences predictors of both statistics course performance and statistics transfer. Students enrolled in an introductory undergraduate statistics course completed inventories for the three individual differences under investigation as well as measures of course performance and transfer. We hypothesized that TOSA would be a stronger predictor of achievement goals, course performance, and transfer, and would outperform TOI in competing path models. We also anticipated that achievement goals would predict both statistics outcomes. Results demonstrated that (1) TOSA is a stronger predictor of …

Strategy/Enterprise Discourse Bounds In Business Talk., Brendan O'Rourke Jan 2016

Strategy/Enterprise Discourse Bounds In Business Talk., Brendan O'Rourke

Articles

Corporate strategy emerged as large non-owner managed firms became economically important (Knights and Morgan, 1991). Strategy became the substitute for the earlier enterprise discourse, which depended on the dominance, in entrepreneurial capitalism, of owner-managed firms. The discourses of strategy and enterprise developed as separate academic areas and as logics of two very different economic domains. From the late 1970s however, large organizations (Kanter, 1983:27) and governments have been urged to be more entrepreneurial (Klein et al., 2010; Osborne and Gaebler, 1993). Meanwhile, small firms were encouraged to be more strategic (Carr, 2000). This article looks at evidence from small …

Legitimising Expertise: Analysing The Legitimation Strategies Used By Economics Experts In Broadcast Interviews, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke

Articles

Few would doubt that economists have taken a prominent role as experts on policy issues [Maesse, J. 2015. Economic experts: A discursive political economy of economics. Journal of Multicultural Discourses 10, no.3: 279–305] and some contend that no other social science discipline has gained such prominence [Fourcade, M., E. Ollion, and Y. Algan. 2015. The superiority of economists. Journal of Economic Perspectives 29, no.1: 89–114]. This prominent societal role has long been evident and leans on their perceived objectivity with regard to the economy and policy advice. Yet, the Great Recession of 2008 put past understandings of the economy, and …

Automated Selection Of The Optimal Cardiac Phase For Single-Beat Coronary Ct Angiography Reconstruction, Daniel Stassi, S. Dutta, H. Ma, A. Soderman, D. Pazzani, E. Gros, D. Okerlund, Taly Gilat-Schmidt Jan 2016

Automated Selection Of The Optimal Cardiac Phase For Single-Beat Coronary Ct Angiography Reconstruction, Daniel Stassi, S. Dutta, H. Ma, A. Soderman, D. Pazzani, E. Gros, D. Okerlund, Taly Gilat-Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: Reconstructing a low-motion cardiac phase is expected to improve coronary artery visualization in coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) exams. This study developed an automated algorithm for selecting the optimal cardiac phase for CCTA reconstruction. The algorithm uses prospectively gated, single-beat, multiphase data made possible by wide cone-beam imaging. The proposed algorithm differs from previous approaches because the optimal phase is identified based on vessel image quality (IQ) directly, compared to previous approaches that included motion estimation and interphase processing. Because there is no processing of interphase information, the algorithm can be applied to any sampling of image phases, …

Motor Output Variability Impairs Driving Ability In Older Adults, Neha Lodha, Hwasil Moon, Changki Kim, Tanya Onushko, Evangelos A. Christou Jan 2016

Motor Output Variability Impairs Driving Ability In Older Adults, Neha Lodha, Hwasil Moon, Changki Kim, Tanya Onushko, Evangelos A. Christou

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background: The functional declines with aging relate to deficits in motor control and strength. In this study, we determine whether older adults exhibit impaired driving as a consequence of declines in motor control or strength.

Methods: Young and older adults performed the following tasks: (i) maximum voluntary contractions of ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion; (ii) sinusoidal tracking with isolated ankle dorsiflexion; and (iii) a reactive driving task that required responding to unexpected brake lights of the car ahead. We quantified motor control with ankle force variability, gas position variability, and brake force variability. We quantified reactive driving performance with a combination …

Comparing Offline Decoding Performance In Physiologically Defined Neuronal Classes, Matthew D. Best, Kazutaka Takahashi, Aaron J. Suminski, Christian Ethier, Lee E. Miller, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: Recently, several studies have documented the presence of a bimodal distribution of spike waveform widths in primary motor cortex. Although narrow and wide spiking neurons, corresponding to the two modes of the distribution, exhibit different response properties, it remains unknown if these differences give rise to differential decoding performance between these two classes of cells. Approach: We used a Gaussian mixture model to classify neurons into narrow and wide physiological classes. Using similar-size, random samples of neurons from these two physiological classes, we trained offline decoding models to predict a variety of movement features. We compared offline …

Smartphone Microendoscopy For High Resolution Fluorescence Imaging, Xiangqian Hong, Vivek K. Nagarajan, Dale H. Mugler, Bing Yu

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

High resolution optical endoscopes arc increasingly used in diagnosis of various medical conditions of internal organs, such as the cervix and gastrointestinal (GI) tracts, but they are too expensive for use in resource-poor settings. On the other hand, smartphones with high resolution cameras and Internet access have become more affordable, enabling them to diffuse into most rural areas and developing countries in the past decade. In this paper, we describe a smartphone microendoscope that can take fluorescence images with a spatial resolution of 3.1 μm. Images collected from ex vivo, in vitro and in vivo samples using the device …

Dominant Discourses And Language Socialization In The Literacy Practices Of A Spanish-Speaking Church, Katherine Christoffersen Jan 2016

Dominant Discourses And Language Socialization In The Literacy Practices Of A Spanish-Speaking Church, Katherine Christoffersen

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Over the years, research has investigated language in communities, schools and homes, community programs and to a lesser degree research investigates language use in religious communities. In particular, there is a lack of research on religious language and literacy practices in Hispanic communities, especially those in the United States, although incipient work has revealed the importance of religious literacy among women Mexican immigrants (Farr, 2000) and for the socialization of children into a Mexican identity (Baquedano-López, 1997). Given the hostile local sociopolitical environment of Spanish in the state of Arizona in the Southwestern United States, the church is one of …

The Role Of Integrin Alpha 6 On Tumor Metastasis, Shauntell N. Luke Ms. Jan 2016

The Role Of Integrin Alpha 6 On Tumor Metastasis, Shauntell N. Luke Ms.

Honors College Theses

Cancer research is a large topic in science, because over 14 million people are diagnosed worldwide, and of those, 8 million will die annually. Traditional therapies are the mainstays of treatment strategies, but a cure less invasive or with less side effects have not yet been identified. In order to develop a better cure, we need to understand the tumor and molecules present in its tissues. Integrins, cell surface proteins that aid in cell communication, have been found in the tumor tissues of several types of cancers, including prostate, lung and bone. Integrin alpha-6 (ITGA6), in particular, has been found …

The Study Of Nf-Κb Peptide Mimics And How Proteins Bind Dna, Allee M. Murray Jan 2016

The Study Of Nf-Κb Peptide Mimics And How Proteins Bind Dna, Allee M. Murray

Honors College Theses

The protein complex nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) is widely considered to be one of the most influential transcription factors when studying cellular functions. Peptide mimics of NF-κB aim to inhibit DNA binding in order to displace the natural transcription factor, therefore inhibiting transcription and translation. In theory, NF-κB is not the problem; the real problem lies in directing the synthesis and expression of harmful proteins. In conjunction with this, the project aims to study NF-κB and its structure and function to determine what criteria are important for the binding of DNA in order to design a peptide that comes …

Laboratory Evaluation Of A Real-Time Coaxial Cable Casing Imager For Wellbore Integrity Monitoring, Yurong Li, Runar Nygaard, Baokai Cheng, Wenge Zhu, Hai Xiao Jan 2016

Laboratory Evaluation Of A Real-Time Coaxial Cable Casing Imager For Wellbore Integrity Monitoring, Yurong Li, Runar Nygaard, Baokai Cheng, Wenge Zhu, Hai Xiao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Leakage is one of the major concerns in a geological carbon sequestration project due to the adverse environmental consequences. The main leakage risk of CO2 through a thick, low permeable cap rock is identified to be along wells, especially in sedimentary basins that have a history of oil and gas exploration and production. To pursue a robust and cost-effective real-time monitoring technology for CO2 leakage risk detection along the wellbore, a permanently downhole deployed coaxial cable casing imaging system is developed and tested for various deformation modes in laboratory in this paper. The casing imager consists of a …

It analyzes their personal histories, preferred genres, and styles in an attempt to aid performers in accurately and sincerely …

Ecological-Hydrological Feedback In Forested Wetlands, Scott Thomas Allen Jan 2016

Ecological-Hydrological Feedback In Forested Wetlands, Scott Thomas Allen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In forested wetlands, the biotic and abiotic consequences of water level variability is not well understood. The effects of flooding on carbon and water exchanges are important knowledge gaps where progress could benefit management of natural resources and predicting of changes in surface geophysical cycles. Two specific needs are a better understanding of (1) wetland tree responses to hydrologic variations, and (2) the effects of the forest and associated tree stressors on surface energy and water fluxes. Objectives were to determine effects of flooding on evaporation rates and energy dynamics, tree water use and growth responses to river-floodplain connectivity and …

The Duty Of Care Of Bank Directors And Officers Bank Director And Officer Responsibilities Conference, Julie Andersen Hill, Douglas K. Moll Jan 2016

The Duty Of Care Of Bank Directors And Officers Bank Director And Officer Responsibilities Conference, Julie Andersen Hill, Douglas K. Moll

Articles

In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) brought numerous lawsuits against directors and officers offailed banks asserting that they had breached their fiduciary duty of care. Under state corporate law, duty of care claims arise in different contexts, and courts often apply different standards of liability depending upon the context of the claim. In the banking setting, the standard of liability for breach of the duty of care is governed by the federal statute FIRREA and the Supreme Court's decision in Atherton v. FDIC. In Atherton, the Court held that FIRREA allows the …

Ultrafast And Nonlinear Spectroscopy Of Colloidal Nanomaterials, Tony Eugene Karam Jan 2016

Ultrafast And Nonlinear Spectroscopy Of Colloidal Nanomaterials, Tony Eugene Karam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the first part of this dissertation, the adsorption isotherms, resonance coupling, and fluorescence of molecular dyes on the surface of plasmonic nanoparticles are investigates. SHG is also used to investigate the growth of a silver shell on the surface of gold nanoparticles in real time. Additionally, gold-silver-gold core-shell-shell nanoparticles possess extinction peak wavelengths that can be controlled over the visible and near-infrared regions and enhanced photothermal effect. Transient absorption measurements determine that the phonon-phonon scattering lifetime is considerably faster in the core-shell-shell nanoparticles than in the gold nanospheres and gold nanorods, which contributes to the higher photothermal efficiencies. Transient …
