Predicting Asthma Exacerbations Employing Remotely Monitored Adherence, Isabelle Killane, Imran Sulaiman, Elaine Mac Hale, Aoife Breathnach, Terrence Taylor, Martin Holmes, Richard B Reilly, Richard W Costello

Articles

This Letter investigated the efficacy of a decision-support system, designed for respiratory medicine, at predicting asthma exacerbations in a multi-site longitudinal randomised control trial. Adherence to inhaler medication was acquired over 3 months from patients with asthma employing a dose counter and a remote monitoring adherence device which recorded participant's inhaler use: n = 184 (23,656 audio files), 61% women, age (mean ± sd) 49.3 ± 16.4. Data on occurrence of exacerbations was collected at three clinical visits, 1 month apart. The relative risk of an asthma exacerbation for those with good and poor adherence was examined employing a univariate …

Investigation Of Humidity And Temperature Response Of A Silica Gel Coated Microfiber Coupler, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Dejun Liu Jan 2016

Investigation Of Humidity And Temperature Response Of A Silica Gel Coated Microfiber Coupler, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Dejun Liu

Conference Papers

The humidity and temperature responses of a microfiber coupler (MFC) coated with silica gel are investigated. Two MFC structures with different waist diameters of 2.5 and 3.5 μm were fabricated by fusing and tapering two single-mode fibers using a microheater brushing technique. The influences of the coating thickness and tapered waist diameter on the sensing performance are analyzed. For the proposed sensor with a waist diameter of 2.5 μm and 8-layers thick coating, the change in the relative humidity (RH) results in an exponential blueshift with a maximum sensitivity of 1.6 nm/% RH in the range from 70 to 86% …

Biomimetic Manipulator Control Design For Bimanual Tasks In The Natural Environment, Alex Smith Jan 2016

Biomimetic Manipulator Control Design For Bimanual Tasks In The Natural Environment, Alex Smith

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

As robots become more prolific in the human environment, it is important that safe operational procedures are introduced at the same time; typical robot control methods are often very stiff to maintain good positional tracking, but this makes contact (purposeful or accidental) with the robot dangerous. In addition, if robots are to work cooperatively with humans, natural interaction between agents will make tasks easier to perform with less effort and learning time. Stability of the robot is particularly important in this situation, especially as outside forces are likely to affect the manipulator when in a close working environment; for example, …

Austerity And Its Effects On Neoliberal Industrial Policy: The Case Of Enterprise Policy In Ireland, Ewan Macdonald, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke Jan 2016

Austerity And Its Effects On Neoliberal Industrial Policy: The Case Of Enterprise Policy In Ireland, Ewan Macdonald, John Hogan, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

This paper seeks to explore the logic of actually existing austerity and its effects on the development of enterprise policy in the Republic of Ireland. It asks the following question: in what manner has enterprise policy been affected by the Irish experience of austerity? Neoliberal austerity is not merely state parsimony; after all the austerity of post-WWII United Kingdom, with its frugal construction of national health and welfare systems, is far from the austerity advocated by Merkel and Cameron today. In light of this, there are a large number of factors which have led to the unique development of actually …

Mental Imagery In Humanoid Robots, Kristsana Seepanomwan Jan 2016

Mental Imagery In Humanoid Robots, Kristsana Seepanomwan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Mental imagery presents humans with the opportunity to predict prospective happenings based on own intended actions, to reminisce occurrences from the past and reproduce the perceptual experience. This cognitive capability is mandatory for human survival in this folding and changing world. By means of internal representation, mental imagery offers other cognitive functions (e.g., decision making, planning) the possibility to assess information on objects or events that are not being perceived. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that humans are able to employ this ability in the early stages of infancy. Although materialisation of humanoid robot employment in the future appears …

Visual Odometry And Mapping In Natural Environments For Arbitrary Camera Motion Models, George Terzakis Jan 2016

Visual Odometry And Mapping In Natural Environments For Arbitrary Camera Motion Models, George Terzakis

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This is a thesis on outdoor monocular visual SLAM in natural environments. The techniques proposed herein aim at estimating camera pose and 3D geometrical structure of the surrounding environment. This problem statement was motivated by the GPS-denied scenario for a sea-surface vehicle developed at Plymouth University named Springer. The algorithms proposed in this thesis are mainly adapted for the Springer’s environmental conditions, so that the vehicle can navigate on a vision based localization system when GPS is not available; such environments include estuarine areas, forests and the occasional semi-urban territories. The research objectives are constrained versions of the ever-abiding problems …

Evidence-Based Accountability Audits For Cloud Computing, Thomas Rübsamen Jan 2016

Evidence-Based Accountability Audits For Cloud Computing, Thomas Rübsamen

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Cloud computing is known for its on-demand service provisioning and has now become mainstream. Many businesses as well as individuals are using cloud services on a daily basis. There is a big variety of services that ranges from the provision of computing resources to services such as productivity suites and social networks. The nature of these services varies heavily in terms of what kind of information is being out-sourced to the cloud provider. Often, that data is sensitive, for instance when PII is being shared by an individual. Also, businesses that move (parts of) their processes to the cloud are …

A Comparison Of The Mathematical Performance Of Mature Students And Traditional Students Over A 10-Year Period, Fiona Faulkner, Olivia Fitzmaurice, Olivia Hannigan

Journal Articles

Every student who enrols in a degree programme involving service mathematics in the University of Limerick in Ireland is given a mathematics diagnostic test. The diagnostic test was developed due to mathematics lecturers’ anxiety regarding students’ mathematical competency levels. Students receive the 40 question paper-based test in their first service mathematics lecture without prior notification. Initial analysis of students’ work revealed that many students were having difficulties with basic algebra and arithmetic in particular [Gill, O. 2006. “What Counts as Service Mathematics? An Investigation into the ‘Mathematics Problem’ in Ireland.” PhD diss., University of Limerick]. Further research highlighted the significant …

The Neural Dynamics Of Somatosensory Processing And Adaptation Across Childhood: A High-Density Electrical Mapping Study, Neha Uppal, John J. Foxe, John Butler, Frantzy Acluche, Sophie Molholm Jan 2016

The Neural Dynamics Of Somatosensory Processing And Adaptation Across Childhood: A High-Density Electrical Mapping Study, Neha Uppal, John J. Foxe, John Butler, Frantzy Acluche, Sophie Molholm

Articles

Young children are often hyperreactive to somatosensory inputs hardly noticed by adults, as exemplified by irritation to seams or labels in clothing. The neurodevelopmental mechanisms underlying changes in sensory reactivity are not well understood. Based on the idea that neurodevelopmental changes in somatosensory processing and/or changes in sensory adaptation might underlie developmental differences in somatosensory reactivity, high-density electroencephalography was used to examine how the nervous system responds and adapts to repeated vibrotactile stimulation over childhood. Participants aged 6–18 yr old were presented with 50-ms vibrotactile stimuli to the right wrist over the median nerve at 5 blocked interstimulus intervals (ranging …

Unique Characterization Of Materials With Memory, John Murrough Golden Jan 2016

Unique Characterization Of Materials With Memory, John Murrough Golden

Articles

In general, materials with linear memory constitutive relations are characterized by a relaxation function. This leads to a situation where the free energy for most materials with memory is not unique. There is a convex set of free energy functionals with a minimum and a maximum element. An alternative procedure is proposed which characterizes a material by the kernel of the rate of dissipation functional. Using some recent results, we find that a unique free energy and relaxation function may then be deduced. An example is given for discrete spectrum materials. Also, the new results are used to show that …

Turning To Case Studies As A Mechanism For Learning And Evaluation In Action Learning, Denise O'Leary, Paul Coughlan, Clare Rigg, David Coughlan Jan 2016

Turning To Case Studies As A Mechanism For Learning And Evaluation In Action Learning, Denise O'Leary, Paul Coughlan, Clare Rigg, David Coughlan

Conference papers

Case studies are a useful means of capturing and sharing experiential knowledge by allowing researchers to explore the social, organisational and political contexts of a specific case. Although accounts of action learning are often reported using a case study approach, it is not common to see individual case studies being used as a learning practice within action learning sets. Drawing network action learning project this paper explores how the process of coaching, articulating, authoring, sharing and editing case studies provided a vehicle for learning and research within the network action learning sets. The intended contribution of this paper to the …

A Corpus Of Annotated Irish Traditional Dance Music Recordings: Design And Benchmark Evaluations, Pierre Beauguitte, Bryan Duggan, John D. Kelleher Jan 2016

A Corpus Of Annotated Irish Traditional Dance Music Recordings: Design And Benchmark Evaluations, Pierre Beauguitte, Bryan Duggan, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

An emerging trend in music information retrieval (MIR) is the use of supervised machine learning to train automatic music transcription models. A prerequisite of adopting a machine learning methodology is the availability of annotated corpora. However, different genres of music have different characteristics and modelling these characteristics is an important part of creating state of the art MIR systems. Consequently, although some music corpora are available the use of these corpora is tied to the specific music genre, instrument type and recording context the corpus covers. This paper introduces the first corpus of annotations of audio recordings of Irish traditional …

Comparison Of Cox Regression And Discrete Time Survival Models, Hong Ye Jan 2016

Comparison Of Cox Regression And Discrete Time Survival Models, Hong Ye

Wayne State University Dissertations

A standard analysis of prostate cancer biochemical failure data is done by conducting two approaches in which risk factors or covariates are measured. Cox regression and discrete-time survival models were compared under different attributes: sample size, time periods, and parameters in the model. The person-period data was reconstructed when examining the same data in discrete-time survival model. Twenty-four numerical examples covering a variety of sample sizes, time periods, and number of parameters displayed the closeness of Cox regression and discrete-time survival methods in situations typical of the cancer study.

The Use Of Personality Profiling As A Means To Assess Person-Organizational Fit To Inform Personnel Decisions, Rebecca J. Early Jan 2016

The Use Of Personality Profiling As A Means To Assess Person-Organizational Fit To Inform Personnel Decisions, Rebecca J. Early

Wayne State University Dissertations

Profile matching refers to personnel selection based on candidate similarity to a pre-determined pattern. Although previous investigations support the use of personality data through univariate, linear-based selection methodologies, there is a paucity of research supporting the use of profile matching in a selection context, and very limited selection research has utilized a person-centered approach. Still, this support is necessary, given that a recent study estimated that the majority of consultative vendor organizations utilize some form of profile matching using personality patterns (Kulas, 2013). After generating profiles from the candidate pool, findings from the current study suggest that profiles have potential …

Neuronal Insult Either By Exposure To Lead Or By Direct Neuronal Damage Cause Genome-Wide Changes In Dna Methylation And Histone 3 Lysine 36 Trimethylation, Arko Sen

Wayne State University Dissertations

Prenatal and postnatal exposure to pervasive neuro-toxicants such as Lead (Pb) has been reported to causes extensive and diverse changes in the epigenetic profile. Among epigenetic modification, DNA methylation (5mC) is perhaps the most widely studied and has been proposed to be potential early biomarkers for Pb toxicity. Several studies have demonstrated the association between Pb-exposure and 5mC. However most of these studies are restricted to looking at a specific set of target genes or repetitive elements. Therefore, one of the main objectives of our study was to use an unbiased genome-wide approach to look at Pb-exposure associated changes in …
