Waveform Systematics In Moderate Mass Ratio Binary Black Hole Systems, Rachel E. Mechum
Waveform Systematics In Moderate Mass Ratio Binary Black Hole Systems, Rachel E. Mechum
Theses
Gravitational wave (GW) observations of binary black hole (BBH) mergers by advanced LIGO (aLIGO) have transformed our understanding of compact objects (COs). As detector sensitivity improves, new populations consisting of moderate to high mass ratio binaries will become increasingly accessible. Parameter estimation (PE), a process that extracts source properties such as masses and spins from GW signals, is critically dependent on accurate waveform models. However, current models may use approximations that introduce systematic errors for binaries with mass ratios between 0.05 and 0.5, affecting parameter accuracy and scientific interpretation. Using the Rapid Iterative FiTting (RIFT) algorithm, this work quantifies waveform …
Using Probabilistic Component Separation To Measure The Sunyaev-Zel’Dovich Effect In Herschel-Spire Galaxy Cluster Observations, Daniel Jeremy Klyde
Using Probabilistic Component Separation To Measure The Sunyaev-Zel’Dovich Effect In Herschel-Spire Galaxy Cluster Observations, Daniel Jeremy Klyde
Theses
Galaxy clusters evolve over cosmic history from small gravitational over-densities at redshift z > 7 to become the most massive gravitationally bound objects in the universe today. The demographics of galaxies populating clusters have shifted significantly over this time, from sites of intense star formation at z ~ 2-4, to largely quiescent objects in the current epoch. An important phase of this evolution involves the development of a hot, ionized intracluster medium (ICM). Its formation around cosmic noon overlaps with the peak in star formation, which requires a multi-wavelength observational approach to fully characterize. One way to study the properties of …

Small alterations during the early stages of the innate immune response to an implant can drive large changes in adaptive immunity. Biomaterials for regenerative purposes can be engineered to modulate this immune response in beneficial ways. This study presents an innovative patch designed and functionalized to target the innate immunity at the implant site. Mannose moieties are incorporated into collagen patches, resulting in a technology called Local Immunotuning Patch (LIP), designed to directly interact with antigen presenting cells through their mannose receptor. In vitro, LIP shows anti-inflammatory effects on bone marrow-derived macrophages and inhibitory properties even on methicillin-resistant bacterial strains. …

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BVP) is an established treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and wide QRS. Left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) has emerged as a physiologic alternative by directly engaging the His-Purkinje system, potentially improving electrical resynchronization and clinical outcomes.
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the clinical outcomes between BVP and LBBAP in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤50% undergoing CRT.
Methods: This multicenter observational study included patients with LVEF ≤50% receiving CRT with either LBBAP or BVP at 18 centers from January 2018 to June …
An Exploration Of The Structure Of The Linear Algebraic Model Of Color, Isaac Martin
An Exploration Of The Structure Of The Linear Algebraic Model Of Color, Isaac Martin
University Honors Theses
This thesis surveys the mathematical grounding of linear algebraic models of color. It aims to build from the ground up the framework by which additive color is broadly understood in the digital age. Primarily building on the work of Jozef Cohen, Eric Dubois, David H. Krantz, and Günter Wyszecki, it aims to chart the construction of a model of color that underpins most modern understandings of color. While the construction is certainly established in colorimetric circles, the construction is, in the thesis author's opinion, either obtuse or non-rigorous. Ideally, this thesis serves to make the construction accessible to an audience …
Comparison Of Psychological Data Between Populations, A Measurement Perspective, Ype H. Poortinga, Hester Van Herk, Johnny Fontaine
Comparison Of Psychological Data Between Populations, A Measurement Perspective, Ype H. Poortinga, Hester Van Herk, Johnny Fontaine
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In cross-cultural psychology there is a strong tradition of psychometric analysis of bias and invariance (equivalence) after collection of data in distinct populations with identical instruments developed in one population. This implies a focus on measurement outcomes and an operationalist orientation to science. Here we explore how a focus on joint development and content validity of instruments combined with relaxation of the demand of item identity can provide an additional perspective. Three points are addressed:(1) Any comparison between participants from two, or more, populations presumes a common quality (property, attribute) and requires a common measurement scale, a “standard of comparison”. …

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a twisting spinal deformity that occurs in otherwise healthy children at the time of rapid pre-pubescent growth. AIS affects ∼3% of children worldwide and is the most common musculoskeletal diagnosis in pediatric populations, posing a significant physiological, psychosocial and financial burden to patients. Genetic predisposition is a clear and major contributor to AIS, and insights from genomic discoveries are inspiring translational studies ultimately aimed at developing novel diagnostics and therapies. Pre-clinical animal models of AIS are now essential to validate human genetic findings, understand gene-by-environment interactions, and speed etiologic and therapeutic discovery. In this Perspective, …

The brain barrier system, including the choroid plexus, meninges and brain vasculature, regulates substrate transport and maintains differential protein concentrations between blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Aging and neurodegeneration disrupt brain barrier function, but proteomic studies of the effects on blood-CSF protein balance are limited. Here we used SomaScan proteomics to characterize paired CSF and plasma samples from 2,171 healthy or cognitively impaired older individuals from multiple cohorts, including the Global Neurodegeneration Proteomics Consortium. We identified proteins with correlated CSF and plasma levels that are produced primarily outside the brain and are enriched for structural domains that may enable their …

Human Thalamocortical Structural Connectivity Develops In Line With A Hierarchical Axis Of Cortical Plasticity, Valerie J Sydnor, Deanna M Barch, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Human cortical development follows a hierarchical, sensorimotor-to-association sequence. The brain's capacity to enact this sequence indicates that it relies on unknown mechanisms to regulate regional differences in the timing of cortical maturation. Given evidence from animal systems that thalamic axons mechanistically regulate periods of cortical plasticity, here we evaluate in humans whether the development of structural connections between the thalamus and cortex aligns with cortical maturational heterochronicity. By deriving a new tractography atlas of human thalamic connections and applying it to diffusion data from three youth samples (8-23 years; total n = 2,676), we demonstrate that thalamocortical connectivity matures in …

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), exhibit distinct yet overlapping pathological mechanisms. Leveraging large-scale plasma proteomics data from the Global Neurodegeneration Proteomics Consortium, we analyzed 10,527 plasma samples (1,936 AD, 525 PD, 163 FTD, 1,638 dementia and 6,265 controls) to identify disease-specific and shared proteins across NDs. We identified 5,187 proteins significantly associated with AD, 3,748 with PD and 2,380 with FTD that revealed both common and divergent proteomic signatures, which were confirmed by multiple analytical approaches and orthogonal validation. PD and FTD showed the highest overlap (r

More than 57 million people globally suffer from neurodegenerative diseases, a figure expected to double every 20 years. Despite this growing burden, there are currently no cures, and treatment options remain limited due to disease heterogeneity, prolonged preclinical and prodromal phases, poor understanding of disease mechanisms, and diagnostic challenges. Identifying novel biomarkers is crucial for improving early detection, prognosis, staging and subtyping of these conditions. High-dimensional molecular studies in biofluids ('omics') offer promise for scalable biomarker discovery, but challenges in assembling large, diverse datasets hinder progress. To address this, the Global Neurodegeneration Proteomics Consortium (GNPC)-a public-private partnership-established one of the …

Let’S Teach More Accurate And Inclusive History! The Case Of Islamic Contributions To Mathematics And Science, Nuh Aydin
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Schools commonly teach a history of mathematics and science that is Eurocentric. This selective version of the history of science, called Classical Narrative by some, is rooted in colonial times and mindset, and has reinforced certain negative opinions about other cultures. It ignores or downplays contributions to mathematics and sciences from non-western civilizations, and falsely attributes many scientific discoveries to European scholars. Medieval Islamic Civilization, which had strong connections to Renaissance Europe, serves as a clear example of how this narrative is distorted. Based on research on primary sources since the middle of the 20th century, we now know that …

The puzzle game Sudoku has been popular for over two decades, and even at one time became a craze for the public. This paper will briefly describe what the game is, a little bit of its history, and how to play it, but will leave the details to the many published books about the game. Some interesting and difficult mathematical problems relevant to the game will be highlighted, again leaving the detailed discussion to specific books published on this issue. The main point the paper tries to focus on is a discussion on the cognitive and the psychological aspects of …

A Dualistic Interpretation Of Mathematical Creation Through Art And Argumentation, Sofia Almpani, Petros Stefaneas, Mihir Chakraborty
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Creativity, informal reasoning and dynamic exchange of ideas form the pulsating heart of mathematical creation. In this approach, the concept of a mathematical object surpasses conventional boundaries of formal presentation, as they also encompass the intention to prove, significant creative stages within the proving, and the overall experience of prover's journey, which may involve arguments, debates, discovery insights, aesthetic visualizations, and narrative elements. In this paper we present two conceptual frameworks, namely Argumentation-based Proof-Events Calculus (APEC) and Mathematical RUPAs, in order to provide distinct yet interconnected perspectives on informal thinking, knowledge creation, and proving in mathematics. Following the two perspectives, …
On Gödel’S Incompleteness Theorem, David Pierce
On Gödel’S Incompleteness Theorem, David Pierce
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem is about the logic of mathematics. It is that a certain mathematical structure is so rich that its theory cannot be completely axiomatized. This means there will always be true statements about the structure that cannot be proved as theorems from previously given axioms. To give meaning to this conclusion, we review some examples of mathematical theorems, and their proofs, in geometry, algebra, and logic; we also give an example of a structure that is so simple (while still being interesting) that its theory can indeed be completely axiomatized. First we look at a couple of popular …
Should College Students Be Inventors? A Case Study Of A Mathematics Professor In India, Praveen Chhikara, Rochelle Gutiérrez
Should College Students Be Inventors? A Case Study Of A Mathematics Professor In India, Praveen Chhikara, Rochelle Gutiérrez
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This qualitative case study attempts to understand instructional roles and goals that a mathematics professor in India sets and envisions for engaging students around abstract mathematical concepts. We generated the data with the professor while he participated in professional development program sessions we provided on the active role of students in learning mathematics. Guided by two theoretical lenses of Realistic Mathematics Education and Rehumanizing Mathematics, our data analysis identified three main themes through the teaching practices that he employs or conceives: (1) Supporting students to avoid faulty foundations by developing proofs, (2) Offering opportunities for exploration by giving appropriate guidance, …

Graphical Timetables As A Real-Life Example Of Different Representations Of Functions, Olav G. Imenes
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This paper examines 203 pre-service teachers' reactions and learning when they were introduced to a real-life situation in which it is natural to publish officially both graphs and tables of a given function: the situation of operating a railway. I found that almost all the pre-service teachers managed the easiest tasks, like calculating speeds, distances, and time for train represented by graphs. However, the more complicated tasks, which required interpretations of the graphs and tables, such as planning for a delayed train, finding which trains were locals, freight trains etc., were more difficult for them to grasp. There were few …

A Practical Rule Of Divisibility By 7 In Uqlīdisī’S Kitāb Al-Fuṣūl Fī Al-Ḥisāb Al-Hindī, Müjdat Takıcak, Mertkan Şimşek
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
There are many known examples of divisibility rules in modern mathematics. However, some of these rules are far from being practical, such as the current divisibility rule by 7. A far more useful method can be found in the work of the tenth-century Islamic mathematician Abū al-Ḥasan al-Uqlīdisī (d. 980), who proposed a divisibility rule for 7 in his treatise Kitāb al-Fuṣūl fī al-Ḥisāb al-Hindī. Compared to modern techniques, Uqlīdisī’s rule is both simpler and more practical. This article (re)introduces this rule, and provides an exposition of the mathematical reasoning that underpins it.
