The Effect Of Consumer Attitudes On Design For Product Longevity: The Case Of The Fashion Industry, Angharad Mclaren, Helen Goworek, Tim Cooper, Lynn Oxborrow, Helen Hill Jun 2016

The Effect Of Consumer Attitudes On Design For Product Longevity: The Case Of The Fashion Industry, Angharad Mclaren, Helen Goworek, Tim Cooper, Lynn Oxborrow, Helen Hill

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Product longevity is a key aspect of sustainability and encouraging consumers to prolong the lifetime of products therefore has a part to play in minimising environmental sustainability impacts. The production, distribution and disposal phases of the clothing life cycle all create environmental impacts, but extending garments’ active life via design, maintenance and re-use of clothing is the most effective method of reducing the negative effects of the clothing industry on the environment. The study took an exploratory approach using mixed qualitative research methods to investigate consumer perspectives on clothing longevity and explore everyday processes and practices of clothing use, e.g. …

Capturing The “How”: Showing The Value Of Codesign Through Creative Evaluation, Arthi Kanchana Manohar, Madeline Smith, Mirian Calvo Jun 2016

Capturing The “How”: Showing The Value Of Codesign Through Creative Evaluation, Arthi Kanchana Manohar, Madeline Smith, Mirian Calvo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Evaluation is undertaken for various reasons from helping to ensure that objectives are met to identifying success. This paper examines the significance of creative evaluation in a co-design approach. We have identified a major gap in appropriately embedding evaluation into engagement and consultation processes. The study explores the use of evaluation to evidence the value of co-design and consultation. As a part of this we have established a broad framework to gather information and data to build a portfolio of evidence to evidence the difference we are making. From the initial studies we have identified findings that are significant and …

Open Practices: Lessons From Co-Design Of Public Services For Behaviour Change, Simon O’Rafferty, Adam Deeyto, Huw Lewis Jun 2016

Open Practices: Lessons From Co-Design Of Public Services For Behaviour Change, Simon O’Rafferty, Adam Deeyto, Huw Lewis

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores what the distinctive value of design may be in a policy context. The paper broadly supports the contention by Smith and Otto (2014) that design offers a “distinct way of knowing that incorporates both analysing and doing in the process of constructing knowledge”. The paper will also outline potential limitations of the direct translating of design practice and methods into a policy context. To achieve this, the paper uses insights gained from an on-going design research project, Open Practices, which aims to co-design services and policy interventions to enable sustainable behaviour change. In this case, co-design, as …

The Use Of Argumentation In Design Research, Stella Boess Jun 2016

The Use Of Argumentation In Design Research, Stella Boess

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper proposes argumentation as a key skill that ties research methodology into design. The paper first aligns Toulmin argumentation with the role of design and design results and then provides an example of how this skills set can be acquired in the context of design. Argumentation can be used to place design in societal context. A design education course is presented with its starting points and teaching activities in order to illustrate the application of argumentation in design research. The course is compared with another recently presented course that takes the same argumentation model as an underlying principle. The …

The Document: A Multiple Concept, Sabine Roux Jun 2016

The Document: A Multiple Concept, Sabine Roux

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper discusses the concept of the document evolved throughout the 20th century in France, particularly through the writings of Robert Escarpit and Jean Meyriat. The document began as a simple notion and then gradually took on new meanings such that it is now seen as a construction of social values. Multiplicity is posited as a fundamental characteristic of the document, which affects its meaning, its interpretation and its social values. Like a rhizome, the document circulates in social spaces with multiple, nomadic associations through attribution, intention, meaning, interpretations and social values (political issues, artistic and aesthetic dimensions, economy, etc.) …

A Neo-Documentalist Lens For Exploring The Premises Of Disciplinary Knowledge Making, Lisa Börjesson, Nicolo Dell'unto, Isto Huvila, Carolina Larsson, Daniel Löwenborg, Bodil Petersson, Per Stenborg Jun 2016

A Neo-Documentalist Lens For Exploring The Premises Of Disciplinary Knowledge Making, Lisa Börjesson, Nicolo Dell'unto, Isto Huvila, Carolina Larsson, Daniel Löwenborg, Bodil Petersson, Per Stenborg

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This article applies a neo-documentalist approach to explore disciplinary documentation and document practices, assumed to condition disciplinary knowledge-making. The aim is to show how conceptions and materialities of what counts as documentation and documents are intertwined with changing and persisting disciplinary and sub-disciplinary practices of producing information and knowledge, of knowing, and informing. A collective, multivocal autoethnographic method is used to obtain vignettes from five areas of activity in or related to archaeology. The ongoing digitization of archaeological investigation and documentation methods, and of archaeological materials, is used as a shared departure point in the vignettes, explaining how digitization influences …

Language, Memory, And Exile In The Writing Of Milan Kundera, Christopher Michael Mccauley Jun 2016

Language, Memory, And Exile In The Writing Of Milan Kundera, Christopher Michael Mccauley

Dissertations and Theses

During the twentieth century, the former Czechoslovakia was at the forefront of Communist takeover and control. Soviet influence regulated all aspects of life in the country. As a result, many well-known political figures, writers, and artists were forced to flee the country in order to evade imprisonment or death. One of the more notable examples is the writer Milan Kundera, who fled to France in 1975. Once in France, the notion of exile became a prominent theme in his writing as he sought to expose the political situation of his country to the western world--one of the main reasons why …

Dartmouth Scholarship

To investigate large structural clonal mosaicism of chromosome X, we analysed the SNP microarray intensity data of 38,303 women from cancer genome-wide association studies (20,878 cases and 17,425 controls) and detected 124 mosaic X events 4 2 Mb in 97 (0.25%) women. Here we show rates for X-chromosome mosaicism are four times higher than mean autosomal rates; X mosaic events more often include the entire chromosome and participants with X events more likely harbour autosomal mosaic events. X mosaicism frequency increases with age (0.11% in 50-year olds; 0.45% in 75-year olds), as reported for Y and autosomes. Methylation array analyses …
