The Rise Of Neoliberalism - A Transrational Analysis: Towards A New Vision For Urban Education, Dennis Kevin Gregory Jun 2016

The Rise Of Neoliberalism - A Transrational Analysis: Towards A New Vision For Urban Education, Dennis Kevin Gregory

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

I was driven to this study by witnessing dramatic changes in urban education in recent years and began to ask the questions: What is going on? And why now? This dissertation will show that an extremely powerful and pervasive global ideology known as neoliberalism is at the core of the answers to these questions. As a result, understanding the Rise of Neoliberalism has become a passionate mission for me.

Ferguson (2009) argues that a different approach to the study of neoliberalism is needed because the current scholarship is unsatisfactory; generating common pejorative and unsurprising conclusions like ‘it is bad for …

Russon suggests a pedagogy of cross-cultural awareness that can be derived from taking chapters of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit as a pattern for solving contemporary problems involving racial, ethnic, cultural and religious conflict.

Native American College Students: A Group Forgotten, Kristen E. Willmott, Tara Leigh Sands, Melissa Raucci, Stephanie J. Waterman Jun 2016

Native American College Students: A Group Forgotten, Kristen E. Willmott, Tara Leigh Sands, Melissa Raucci, Stephanie J. Waterman

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Broadening McClellan’s (2003) study through 2011, the authors utilize qualitative content analysis of over two thousand journal articles, professional association conference programs, and reflective memos, to detail the extent to which Native American college students remain a forgotten group within the literature. The authors’ positionality and Indigenous feminist theory inform the study. The study concludes by exploring the benefits of expanded Native American college student research and the authors propose a research agenda that can guide higher education professionals to better serve the educational needs of this unique group.

Transcendence And Transformation: Charles Taylor And The Promise Of Inclusive Humanism In A Secular Age., Phillip Williamson Schoenberg Jun 2016

Transcendence And Transformation: Charles Taylor And The Promise Of Inclusive Humanism In A Secular Age., Phillip Williamson Schoenberg

Philosophy ETDs

This is a study in the religious philosophy of the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor. I focus in particular on the role of transcendence in his later writing on religion and secularity with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of his overall vision of the way out of the malaise of modernity, namely, his adumbration of a pluralistic solution, which I call "inclusive humanism" in contrast to both a narrow religious humanism on the one hand, and a narrow "exclusive" secular humanism on the other. Transcendence as transformation is the centerpiece of Taylor's hope for the moral and spiritual …

Coping with Water Scarcity in River Basins Worldwide: Lessons Learned from Shared Experiences (Martz Summer Conference, June 9-10)

Water scarcity is increasingly dominating headlines throughout the world. In the southwestern USA, the looming water shortages on the Colorado River system and the unprecedented drought in California are garnering the greatest attention. Similar stories of scarcity and crisis can be found across the globe, suggesting an opportunity for sharing lessons and innovations. For example, the Colorado River and Australia's Murray-Darling Basin likely can share many lessons, as both systems were over-allocated, feature multiple jurisdictions, face similar climatic risks and drought stresses, and struggle to balance human demands with environmental needs. In this conference we cast our net broadly, exploring …

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield Jun 2016

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield

History ETDs

This project aims to explain how the contemporary Tule Lake Committee commemorates and honors the Japanese Americans who found themselves incarcerated at the Tule Lake Segregation Center in northern California after 'failing' the loyalty questionnaire administered to them by the War Relocation Authority during World War II. The Tule Lake Committee holds biennial pilgrimages which have become increasingly popular in the last decade. A 'thick description' of the 2010 pilgrimage and an analysis of the pilgrimage themes shows how the Tule Lake Committee honors the experience of Japanese Americans whose history was written out of the collective memory in the …

Hombres Normativos: The Creation And Inculcation Of Martial Masculinity During The Franco Regime In Spain (1939—1975), Ian Kent Winchester Jun 2016

Hombres Normativos: The Creation And Inculcation Of Martial Masculinity During The Franco Regime In Spain (1939—1975), Ian Kent Winchester

History ETDs

This dissertation investigates the Franco dictatorships construction of normative masculinity through mandatory military service in Spain from 1939—1975. As part of the regime's efforts to normalize its version of Spanish nationalism, it institutionalized a militarized masculinity in the armed forces. For its sources, the project employs military publications such as autobiographies, journals, training manuals, and magazines as well as courts-martial, service records, and military statistics. Using this rich variety of evidence, the study demonstrates that a gendered conception of the soldier occupied a privileged position in the solidification of the Franco regime's power, the intended moral regeneration of Spanish society, …

A Comparison Of Presence Only Suitability Models To Accurately Identify Prehistoric Agricultural Fields In Western New Mexico Through Remote Sensing, Alissa Healy Jun 2016

A Comparison Of Presence Only Suitability Models To Accurately Identify Prehistoric Agricultural Fields In Western New Mexico Through Remote Sensing, Alissa Healy

Geography ETDs

This project aims to provide greater understanding of the agricultural practices of prehistoric cultures throughout the arid and semi-arid environments of western New Mexico by developing a remote sensing suitability model that will identify prime environments for a specific form of agricultural field, ak chin, that are often difficult to locate with standard field-based archaeological methods. Remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems methods were applied to develop suitability models that will identify ideal environments for ak chin style agricultural fields based on a small training data sample. Three models: Mahalanobis Technicality, Maximum Entropy (Maxent), and Multi-Criteria Evaluation Ordered Weighted Average …

Sociolinguistics For Kids: A Curriculum For Bilingual Students, Mary Hudgens Henderson Jun 2016

Sociolinguistics For Kids: A Curriculum For Bilingual Students, Mary Hudgens Henderson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

While sociolinguistics outreach projects have been created with native-English-speaking students in mind (Reaser, 2006; Sweetland, 2006; Wheeler & Swords, 2006), a language awareness program has yet to be created and implemented for English Language Learners. To meet this need, eighteen Sociolinguistic Awareness lessons were designed, implemented, and evaluated for Spanish-English bilingual 5th graders enrolled in a Dual Language program (N = 24) in the Southwest U.S. The Language Variation and Style-Shifting curriculum was assessed through 1) pretest and posttest language surveys; 2) conversational interviews with select participants before and after the lessons were taught; and 3) field notes collected by …

Facing Our Demons: Psychiatric Perspectives On Exorcism Rituals, Joel R. Sanford Jun 2016

Facing Our Demons: Psychiatric Perspectives On Exorcism Rituals, Joel R. Sanford

The Hilltop Review

Belief in possession by malevolent spirits exists in many cultures and religions throughout the world, and such beliefs often serve as explanations for a variety of psychological and emotional afflictions. Traditional remedies in these cases often involve exorcism rituals, which are believed to expel spirits from a person's mind and/or body. Some of the cases commonly attributed to involuntary spirit possession are diagnosed within the psychiatric community as schizophrenia or some sort of dissociative disorder and treated with psychotherapy and/or medicine. For some in the psychiatric community, exorcisms and their use by patients are viewed as problematic due to their …

Something Is Rotten In The Unreal City: Hamlet In The Waste Land, Aimee Valentine Jun 2016

Something Is Rotten In The Unreal City: Hamlet In The Waste Land, Aimee Valentine

The Hilltop Review

T.S. Eliot’s poem of 1922, “The Waste Land,” lays philosophical and stylistic ground for the Modern literary movement in which human experience takes the performative shape of inner dialog (or soliloquy) for the benefit of the reader/audience. This essay will argue that Eliot’s poem is an existentialist work that is not merely informed by Shakespeare’s Hamlet (the earliest example of British existentialism), but is directly modeled after it, in Eliot’s attempt to rectify the play’s perceived failings. Existentialism as a key to unlocking the mood of Modern literature is overlooked by those critics who relegate existentialist literature to the …

A Multidisciplinary Approach To Understanding Gambling And The Millennial Generation, Don Feeney Jun 2016

A Multidisciplinary Approach To Understanding Gambling And The Millennial Generation, Don Feeney

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

While numerous studies have been done on the gambling habits of the Millennial Generation, we can learn much about their reaction to gambling through an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates insights from demography, cultural anthropology, history, sociology and other fields. In particular, an analysis of formative experiences and how they differ from previous generations tells us much about their gambling behavior and attitudes. In addition to a discussion of key findings, the presentation will focus on the implications of these findings for the gambling industry and for programs that raise awareness of, prevent, and treat gambling problems.

Human Locomotion: Examining Energy Costs And Human Behavior Associated With Load-Carrying, Gailynn Benjamin Jun 2016

Human Locomotion: Examining Energy Costs And Human Behavior Associated With Load-Carrying, Gailynn Benjamin

Honors Projects

The energy expenditure during load-carrying depends on the mass of the load, the position of the load on the body, and if tools are used to help transfer the load. When the load being carried is a human child, strategies employed to cope with the increased energetic burden should include males carrying older and heavier children, arm use decreasing as children become older, and tool use increasing as children become older. To uncover whether people make energetically-mediated decisions to carry children, 236 adult males and 314 adult females were observed walking around parks in Seattle, WA, while carrying a child. …

Oladapo, Olalekan O. Adetoro, Elizabeth A. Orenuga, Mrutyunjaya Bellad, Ashalata Mallapur, Umesh Charantimath, Esperanca Sevene

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Globally, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are major contributors to maternal and perinatal mortality; of which the vast majority of deaths occur in less developed countries. In addition, a disproportionate number of morbidities and mortalities occur due to delayed access to health services. The Community Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia (CLIP) Trial aims to task-shift to community health workers the identification and emergency management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia to improve access and timely care. Literature revealed paucity of published feasibility assessments prior to initiating large-scale community-based interventions. Arguably, well-conducted feasibility studies can provide valuable information about the potential success of clinical trials …

Get Out Of Fines Free: Recruiting Student Usability Testing Via Fine Waivers, Benjamin Hockenberry, Kourtney Blackburn

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

St. John Fisher College's Lavery Library's Access Services and Systems departments began a pilot project in which students with overdue fines tested usability of library Web sites in exchange for fine waivers. Circulation staff promoted the program and redeemed fine waiver vouchers at the Checkout Desk, while Systems staff administered testing and provided vouchers to participants. Staff evaluated the pilot to be a success, as qualitative data were collected to enable iterative changes to library Web sites, and users had a positive customer service experience. The piloted method may be applied in the future to assess other programs and services.

Looking To The Third Sovereign: Tribal Environmental Ethics As An Alternative Paradigm, Elizabeth Ann Kronk Warner Jun 2016

Looking To The Third Sovereign: Tribal Environmental Ethics As An Alternative Paradigm, Elizabeth Ann Kronk Warner

Pace Environmental Law Review

This article considers what role, if any, can tribal environmental ethics play in the re-examination and consideration of American environmental ethics? The answer—quite a substantial role. Tribes must straddle two worlds—a traditional one and one dominated by Western culture and values. As a result of this dichotomy, tribes are necessarily experts at adaptation and innovation. To demonstrate the value of looking to tribal environmental ethics when considering alternative ethical paradigms for the United States, this article begins by discussing the link between environmental ethics and policy making. With this understanding in place, the article then examines the importance of environmental …

More Than Numbers: Recruitment And Retention Of Teachers Of Color In U.S. Public Schools, Esteban Cabrera-Duran , '18 Jun 2016

More Than Numbers: Recruitment And Retention Of Teachers Of Color In U.S. Public Schools, Esteban Cabrera-Duran , '18

#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College

Recent scholarship has demonstrated the improved educational outcome of students of color when their teachers are of a similar background (Villegas & Irvine, 2010). In addition to this work, there is research that shows that teachers of color leave the profession due to the lack of agency and voice in decision making and racially hostile climate for teachers of color (Achinstein & Ogawa, 2011; Kohli, 2016). This article presents a case for recruiting teachers of color and the development and support for programs that would lower teacher turnover rates. In addition, I present possible and endorse existing programs to recruit …

Implementing Ethnic Studies In California Public Schools, Tania Uruchima , '16 Jun 2016

Implementing Ethnic Studies In California Public Schools, Tania Uruchima , '16

#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College

This paper explores the fight for ethnic studies in California public schools from two angles: the legislative push for the state to take action, and grassroots organizing by community organizers, students, teachers, parents, and others. Considering the success of grassroots organizing in implementing ethnic studies programming on a district-by-district basis, in contrast with the stalling of legislative action, I propose a policy move that mobilizes the state to actively support local organizing within individual districts. California educational law mandates the deliberate engagement of targeted stakeholders in local school decision-making. Therefore, the state should fund and facilitate the regular convening of …

New Studies Of Children’S Work, Acquisition Of Critical Skills, And Contribution To The Domestic Economy, David F. Lancy Jun 2016

New Studies Of Children’S Work, Acquisition Of Critical Skills, And Contribution To The Domestic Economy, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In spite of the fact that the very earliest ethnographers who paid any attention to children took note of the “precocity” displayed by children in both learning the household (e.g., caring for a younger sibling) and subsistence (harvesting and processing grain), tasks characteristic of the societies under investigation, the first synthesis and cross-cultural compilation of this large body of descriptive material is quite recent. This first, introductory, article in this collection reviews those efforts to systematize the study of children’s work and leads the reader through a catalog of the major conclusions or generalizations that have emerged from this analysis. …
