Conservative Treatment For Sciatica Compare With Surgical Intervention: A Multi-Center Cohort Clinical Study” Is Locked Conservative Treatment For Sciatica Compare With Surgical Intervention: A Multi-Center Cohort Clinical Study
Muthanna Medical Journal
The objective of this study is to compare between conservative and surgical intervention in patients with low back ache. A cohort clinical retrospective-prospective study is enrolling 75 patients with low back ache and diagnosed as sciatica in multi-center (Baghdad and Muthanna). The outcome of both procedures depends on the following measures: neurological deficit, Lasègue test, Sciatica Bothersomeness Index, contralateral Lasègue test. Paired t-test applied for efficacy within the group and Chi-square test to compare the efficacy of two groups. After 6 months there was significant difference between operated and non-operated patients related to Sciatica Bothersomeness Index (p = than 0,01), …

Reef Society And The Tyranny Of Data, Robert Wintner
Reef Society And The Tyranny Of Data, Robert Wintner
Animal Sentience
Modern science now approaches divergent processes in many areas, including health assessments of marine eco-systems and social aspects of marine species. Scientific data have long enjoyed a reputation for objectivity but incidents of science-for-hire, data spinning/skewing and political jading are more frequent than ever. In the field of reef creature sensitivity, technical treatises can “logically” explain away what a person of average education can clearly observe on any given reef. Western medicine discounted anecdotal evidence of any cure outside the 4% margin of error until those cures demanded attention and in some cases application. Modern science must now enter an …

Animal Sentience
Reber believes he has simplified Chalmers’s “hard problem” of consciousness by arguing that subjectivity is an inherent feature of biological forms. His argument rests on the related notions of continuity of mind and gradual accretion of capacities across evolutionary time. These notions need to be defended, not just asserted. Because Reber minimizes the differences in mental faculties among species across evolutionary time, it becomes easier to assert, and perhaps believe, that sentience is already present in early biological forms. The more explicit we are about the differences among these mental faculties and the differences across species, the less persuasive is …

Shamans, Wives, Families: An Isoseño Case Considered Using Turner On Kayapo Dominance And Beauty, Kathleen B. Lowrey
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In this essay I describe what I have seen elapse over twenty years in the lives (and sometimes deaths) of two shamans and their respective wives in Isoso, an indigenous community of Guarani-speaking people in the Bolivian Chaco. These shamans’ two different kinds of shamanic practice, their two different sorts of marriage, and the two different life-trajectories of their wives resonate with the dual nature of Isoso itself and its historical constitution. The reproduction of a hierarchical Arawakan way of life through feminine submission to a Guarani “egalitarianism” of masculine dominance has been, I suspect, a dynamic of long standing …
Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna
Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article reexamines Marcel Mauss’s The Gift and suggests that a certain degree not only of alienability and inalienability but also of illusion is a condition for communication and social organization. Even if there is not an explicit concept of illusion in Mauss’s works, the paper points out that it is present in those of Claude Lévi-Strauss, and that both Mauss’ and Lévi-Strauss’ perspectives can be fruitfully contrasted to Karl Marx’s theory of alienation. Starting from Mauss, this paper offers an exploration of logical and historical continuities between the notions of the gift and of commodities, arguing that they are …

Cardioprotective Effect Of Tetrahydroisoquinoline Following I/R Through Down-Regulation Of Icam-1 Signaling Pathway, Bassim I. Mohammad
Cardioprotective Effect Of Tetrahydroisoquinoline Following I/R Through Down-Regulation Of Icam-1 Signaling Pathway, Bassim I. Mohammad
Muthanna Medical Journal
Myocardial injury caused by ischemia followed by reperfusion mediates a complex series of inflammatory response that reduces the benefit of medical interventions, such as percutaneous coronary intervention, and coronary bypass surgery. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential cardioprotective effect of tetrahydroisoquinoline against myocardial I/R, and the mechanistic pathway of this effect. A total of 32 adult (4 – 6 months) male Albino-Webster mice were randomly divided into 4 equal groups: (1) sham-control group, (2) ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) operated group, (3) vehicle-treated group, and (4) tetrahydroisoquinoline (TIQ)-treated group receiving TIQ 10 mg/kg once daily shortly before …

Population Density, Habitat Dynamic And Aerial Survival Of Relict Cave Bivalves From Genus Congeria In The Dinaric Karst, Olga Jovanović Glavaš, Branko Jalžić, Helena Bilandžija
International Journal of Speleology
Caves are some of the least-known ecosystems on Earth and long-term ecological studies and population size estimates are very rare. Genus Congeria is a Tertiary relict that comprises three species from Dinaric karst area; C. kusceri, C. jalzici and C. mulaomerovici, each with very limited distribution. They are the only known cave bivalves and in contrast to many other cave species, they form populations with high densities. We estimated that the population of C. kusceri in Jama u Predolcu is between 72,454 and 72,906 individuals. The highest density occurred between one and three meters depth, and reached maximum …

High Levels Of Iron Supplementation Prevents Neural Tube Defects In The Fpn1(Ffe) Mouse Model., Bethany A Stokes, Julia A Sabatino, Irene E. Zohn
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Periconception maternal nutrition and folate in particular are important factors influencing the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs). Many but not all NTDs are prevented by folic acid supplementation and there is a pressing need for additional strategies to prevent these birth defects. Other micronutrients such as iron are potential candidates, yet a clear role for iron deficiency in contributing to NTDs is lacking. Our previous studies with the flatiron (ffe) mouse model of Ferroportin1 (Fpn1) deficiency suggest that iron is required for neural tube closure and forebrain development raising the possibility that iron supplementation could prevent NTDs.

Local Government Forestry Expenditure And Forest Land Cover: A Preliminary Lesson From Decentralized Indonesia, Firda Hidayati
Local Government Forestry Expenditure And Forest Land Cover: A Preliminary Lesson From Decentralized Indonesia, Firda Hidayati
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Even though government of Indonesia invests billions of rupiah to tackle deforestation, its effectiveness has been questionable. This study analyses changes in rates of forest cover in Indonesia and their association with forestry expenditures (FE) spent by the provincial governments. Based on 2007 to 2010 data, linear multiple regression results indicate that FE is not enough to tackle the negative change in forest land cover that could represent deforestation. Moreover, it was found that FE have negative association with forest land cover and therefore, can be associated to deforestation. This negative association remains when other factors that affect forest land …

Transcription factor tonicity-responsive enhancer-binding protein (TonEBP/NFAT5) is critical for osmo-adaptation and extracellular matrix homeostasis of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells in their hypertonic tissue niche. Recent studies implicate TonEBP signaling in inflammatory disease and rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis. However, broader functions of TonEBP in the disc remain unknown. RNA sequencing was performed on NP cells with TonEBP knockdown under hypertonic conditions. 1140 TonEBP-dependent genes were identified and categorized using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Bioinformatic analysis showed enrichment of matrix homeostasis and cytokine/chemokine signaling pathways. C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), interleukin 6 (IL6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) …

“Such Night Till This I Never Passed” : How The Dreams Of Adam And Eve Lead To The Decision To Fall In Paradise Lost, Robert B. Chapman
Masters Theses
This thesis explores the idea that the Fall in Paradise Lost by John Milton is not a sudden event, but rather Adam and Eve's adherence to temptations that begin long before, specifically in Eve's vision and Adam's thoughts on Eve. This project begins by challenging the ways in which readers of the poem often overlook Eve as they focus solely on Satan or Adam. By looking at Eve's depiction as truly Adam's equal in the poem, this thesis then moves to the idea that temptations are an individual experience that begins first in the mind. Often, readers and scholars explore …

Myo-inositol phosphates (phytates) are important biological molecules produced largely by plants to store phosphorus. Phytate is very abundant in many different soils making up a large portion of all soil phosphorus. This review assesses current phytase science from the perspective of its substrate, phytate, by examining the intricate relationship between the phytate-hydrolyzing enzymes and phytate as their substrate. Specifically, we examine available data on phytate’s structural features, distribution in nature and functional roles. The role of phytases and their localization in soil and plant tissues are evaluated. We provide a summary of the current biotechnological advances in using industrial …
Lipid-Based Self-Assembled Nps: The Effects Of Morphology And Targeting Molecules On The Cellular Uptake Using In Vitro Tumor Model, Wafa Aresh
Doctoral Dissertations
While the usage of nanoscale materials for therapeutics and diagnostics is growing rapidly, there remain many challenges to understanding the expected controlling parameters (e.g., size, shape and chemical properties) that significantly affect the performance of the nanomaterials due to complicated in vivo environments. Therefore, a strong interest in the knowledge of the nano–biointeractions and how they contribute to tissue accumulation has been developed. To date, researchers have relied on monolayer cell cultures and animal models to study such nano–biointeractions. However, currently, there is a big gap between the result of the over-simplified in vitro cell response and the complex animal …

Although recent studies have shed insights on some of the potential causes of male infertility, new underlining molecular mechanisms still remain to be elucidated. Makorin-2 (Mkrn2) is an evolutionarily conserved gene whose biological functions are not fully known. We developed an Mrkn2 knockout mouse model to study the role of this gene, and found that deletion of Mkrn2 in mice led to male infertility. Mkrn2 knockout mice produced abnormal sperms characterized by low number, poor motility, and aberrant morphology. Disruption of Mkrn2 also caused failure of sperm release (spermiation failure) and misarrangement of ectoplasmic specialization (ES) in testes, thus impairing …
Severing Ties: A Lacanian Reading Of Motherhood In Joyce Carol Oates’S Short Stories "The Children" And "Feral", Uroš Tomić
Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies
This paper approaches two of Joyce Carol Oates’s short stories (“The Children” and “Feral”) from a Lacanian perspective on the tripartite structure of personality in an attempt to analyze questions of motherhood and the parent-child separation process. Although published 35 years apart both stories deal with mothers who have trouble containing their maternal attitude and children who become elusive entities for their parents. Utilizing as well the concept of what Oates has termed “realistic allegory” in the analysis of characters situated within highly specific settings and circumstances, the paper aims to shed light on Oates’s vision of the workings of …

The Trope Of Flattening And The Complexities Of Difference: An Account Of Trinidad Carnival, Nanette De Jong, Christian Mieves
The Trope Of Flattening And The Complexities Of Difference: An Account Of Trinidad Carnival, Nanette De Jong, Christian Mieves
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
This paper critiques the position of flattening as an alternative way to map and analyse power structures in Trinidad Carnival. As will be argued, traditional hierarchies of meaning and value invert in Carnival, with participants using masquerade and the visual arts to perform and critique the contradictions of Trinidad society, and to make or unmake categories of difference. Flattening, as the authors argue, is particularly well suited when speaking about Carnival, whose cultural frames are constantly blurred, stretched, erased or redrawn, and where distortions of social and cultural distinctions are realised visually. Furthermore, flattening emphasises the elasticity and fluidity …
Smoke And Mirrors: Generic Manipulation And Doubling In Dancing To “Almendra”, Amanda Ruth Waugh Lagji
Smoke And Mirrors: Generic Manipulation And Doubling In Dancing To “Almendra”, Amanda Ruth Waugh Lagji
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
This paper explores Mayra Montero’s novel Dancing to “Almendra” as a specifically postcolonial revision of the classic detective novel. Through an examination of the novel’s generic characteristics, I argue that elements that might be at first considered mere postmodern play—the conflation of the real and the performed or the illusion, anachronistic film references, the implantation of historical figures and cinematic personas alike into an otherwise fictional detective narrative—serves the novel’s socially committed, political critique. The doubling and smoke and mirrors that structure the novel ultimately serve to show the truth more clearly, as the postmodern play of performance, smoke, and …

The Rhyming Irons Of Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson, Paul Thifault
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Despite being a highly respected member of the Brathwaite-Walcott generation, Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson has received only passing attention from scholars of West Indian literature. In an attempt to foster greater appreciation for a Caribbean artist recently dubbed “the forgotten poet” in his native Guyana, this article uncovers an organizing principle running through Snowscape with Signature (1993), a substantial posthumous selection of Hopkinson's poems that includes both secular and religious verses. The defining characteristic of Hopkinson’s poetry, I argue, involves his careful imbrication of competing notions of poetry as, on the one hand, a space for transcendent aesthetics and, on the …
