Evaluation Of Several Pre-Clinical Tools For Identifying Characteristics Associated With Limb Bone Fracture In Thoroughbred Racehorses, Anthony Nicholas Corsten Dec 2016

Evaluation Of Several Pre-Clinical Tools For Identifying Characteristics Associated With Limb Bone Fracture In Thoroughbred Racehorses, Anthony Nicholas Corsten

Open Access Theses

Catastrophic skeletal fractures in racehorses are devastating not only to the animals, owners and trainers, but also to the perception of the sport in the public eye. The majority of these fatal accidents are unlikely to be due to chance, but are rather an end result failure from stress fractures. Stress fractures are overuse injuries resulting from an accumulation of bone tissue damage over time. Because stress fractures are pathological, it is possible that overt fractures can be predicted and prevented. In this study, third metacarpals (MC3) from 33 thoroughbred racehorse comprised of 8 non-fractured controls and 25 horses that …

Innovative Novel Immunotherapies For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Salma Salem Dec 2016

Innovative Novel Immunotherapies For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Salma Salem

Open Access Theses

Glioblastoma Multiforme GBM is a very aggressive type of malignant brain tumors that affects peoples’ lives. The diffusive, infiltrative, and metastatic behaviour of GBM is the major reason for the disease recurrence. The morphological and immunohistological characteristics of Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors including GBM are heterogeneous. GBM is either primary (de novo) or secondary to low-grade astrocytomas.

Current treatment options include surgery, radiotherapy, and temozolomide chemotherapy have not achieved any improvement in success rates over the past decades. The survival time reached by GBM patients was approximately 12 months only after being treated with radiotherapy alone without temozolomide. However, …

Rhetorical Analysis Of Monsanto, Kyle J. Brannon Dec 2016

Rhetorical Analysis Of Monsanto, Kyle J. Brannon

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Rhetoric, and therefore persuasion, can be utilized to impact society in profound ways. These communication devices can also be used for more sinister and nefarious purposes that can leave black marks on any society’s history. For the purpose of this rhetorical analysis, I thoroughly investigated three artifacts used by the Monsanto Corporation. This project attempts to show how Monsanto utilizes rhetoric and persuasion to convince consumers their products are safe to purchase, although there is no scientific consensus regarding that safety to humans and the environment. Through an examination of these artifacts, I was able to examine how Monsanto used …

Formulating A Covenant Of Discipleship For The Membership Of The Gwinnett Church Of Christ, David Chisholm

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This project addressed the lack of a covenant of discipleship for the membership of the Gwinnett Church of Christ (GCC). The purpose of the project was to develop such a covenant document to help all the members of GCC better live out the process of becoming more like Jesus. To provide a theological foundation for this project, I explored discipleship in the exhortation sections of the book of Hebrews, which specifically addresses the need for greater commitment and intentionality amongst a community of faith. I also explored the theoretical framework of how formulating a discipleship covenant document could create progress …

Extracting And Modeling Useful Information From Videos For Supporting Continuous Queries, Manish Kumar Annappa

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Automating video stream processing for inferring situations of interest has been an ongoing challenge. This problem is currently exacerbated by the volume of surveillance/monitoring videos generated. Currently, manual or context-based customized techniques are used for this purpose. To the best to our knowledge the attempted work in this area use a custom query language to extract data and infer simple situations from the video streams, thus adding an additional overhead to learn their query language. Objective of the work in this thesis is to develop a framework that extracts data from video streams generating a data representation such that simple …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Cancer, the second most dreadful disease causing large scale deaths in humans is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells in the human body and the ability of those cells to migrate from the original site and spread to distant sites. The major proportion of deaths in cancer is due to improper primary diagnosis that raises the need for Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD). Digital Pathology is a technique that acts as second set of eyes to radiologists in delivering expert level preliminary diagnosis for cancer patients. Cell segmentation is a challenging step in digital pathology that identifies cell regions from micro-slide …

ConvNets have a typical feed-forward structure and they share many properties with the visual system of the human brain. On the other hand, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are emerging as an important technique for image …

Learning Perception To Action Mapping For Functional Imitation, Bhupender Singh Dec 2016

Learning Perception To Action Mapping For Functional Imitation, Bhupender Singh

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Imitation leaning is the learning of advanced behavior whereby an agent acquires a skill by observing another's behavior while performing the same skill. The main objective of imitation learning is to make robots usable for a variety of tasks without programming them but by simply demonstrating new tasks. The power of this approach arises since end users of such robots will frequently not know how to program the robot, might not understand the dynamics and behavioral capabilities of the system, and might not know how to program these robots to get different/new tasks done. Some challenges in achieving imitation capabilities …

Stringent government regulation on environment emissions and demand to develop energy efficient and durable modern mechanical systems has imposed a significant challenge on the lubricant additive manufacturer to develop environment friendly and high performance additives for the lubricating medias like oil and grease. The current industrial additive technology is dominated by phosphorus and sulfur containing the liquid antiwear additive, Zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate and extreme pressure solid additives like Graphite, Molybdenum disulfide. This current additive package possesses harm to the environment and has already met performance limit for applications working under severe operating condition. A proposed solution to combat with this …

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser Dec 2016

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser

Open Access Theses

Given the dynamic nature of soil nitrogen (N), inorganic N fertilization to corn (Zea mays L.) has potential to alter N pool balance by creating an accumulation or depletion of soil N. Current corn N recommendations in the common corn-soybean rotation of Indiana strive to find the best N rate that maximizes producer profit. Increasing our understanding of soil N will inform producers if they should adjust fertilizer rates for corn to influence maintenance of organic N and Carbon. Our objective was to determine residual N effects from fertilized corn in a corn-soybean rotation by measuring (1) soil N …

Origins And Maintenance Of Diversity In A Vertebrate Parthenogen, Alex Scott Hall Dec 2016

Origins And Maintenance Of Diversity In A Vertebrate Parthenogen, Alex Scott Hall

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Clonal lineages are expected to experience a decline in fitness over time due to their inability to decouple deleterious and beneficial alleles. Individually, however, asexual populations pass twice as much of their DNA per generation as sexual lineages. This balancing act between Muller's Ratchet and the lack of the two-fold cost of sex in asexuals brings significant scientific intrigue to instances of asexual populations. Among vertebrates, squamates (and mainly lizards) are uniquely capable of true parthenogenesis whereby females reproduce without males. These lineages are always hybrid, as is the case with parthenogenetic Aspidoscelis lizards (Teiidae). In particular, the checkered whiptail …

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn Dec 2016

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tinnitus means objective somatosounds, and subjective auditory or sensorineural perception of noise without external physical sounds. There are several tinnitus treatments, but it is difficult to ascertain how otorhinolaryngologists rank the alternatives of treatments due to the insufficiency of available evidence and standards. A hierarchical decision model (HDM), a popular multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method, can help to implement a comprehensive assessment of tinnitus treatments and rational decision-making to select the appropriate tinnitus treatments. The HDM considers a holistic approach using multiple dimensions, criteria and expert judgments to acquire the relative ranking of candidate tinnitus treatments. The four dimensions selected …

Cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), and several growth factors are able to bind to cell surface receptors, activate tyrosine kinase activity and promote downstream phosphorylation of STAT proteins. Cytokines associated with …

Phic31 Integrase As A More Efficient Method Of Transgenesis In Zebrafish, Andrew Scortea Dec 2016

Phic31 Integrase As A More Efficient Method Of Transgenesis In Zebrafish, Andrew Scortea

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Zebrafish transgenesis is conventionally performed via the tol2 transposable element system as it is the most straightforward, providing quick and easy transgenesis. Despite being commonly used in the zebrafish community, tol2 mediated transgenesis has issues that cause workflow slowdowns and delays. The biggest of these issues are the random nonspecific integrations which can occur multiple times within a genome. In order to generate a stable transgenic line with a single insertion, one must perform several generations of outcrosses and subsequent screening. Thus, while tol2 transgenesis is effective at generating founder animals, a considerable amount of time and labor is required …

Aging-Related Elevation Of Sphingoid Bases Shortens Yeast Chronological Life Span By Compromising Mitochondrial Function, Jae Kyo Yi Dec 2016

Aging-Related Elevation Of Sphingoid Bases Shortens Yeast Chronological Life Span By Compromising Mitochondrial Function, Jae Kyo Yi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Aging is the biological process of growing older in a deleterious sense, senescence. However, what we have gained only comprises a partial and incomplete understanding of the fundamental molecular mechanisms. Increasing evidence suggests that dysregulation of the metabolism of sphingolipids including sphingoid bases (SBs, long-chain bases) might play an important role in the aging. We know neither how SBs are regulated during yeast aging nor how they, in turn, regulate it. Herein, I demonstrate that the yeast alkaline ceramidases (YPC1 and YDC1) and SB kinases (LCB4 and LCB5) cooperate in regulating SBs during the aging process and that SBs shorten …
