Agritourism Potential As A Perspective In Kosovo, Ruzhdi Matoshi Oct 2016

Agritourism Potential As A Perspective In Kosovo, Ruzhdi Matoshi

UBT International Conference

Tourism development is a broadly diversified activity from the rest of economic sectors. While in the economy a competition between the sectors is a key to better selection and specialization, tourism in general has some exceptions arising from the state support due to the importance this sector has in promoting the country abroad, through promotion, subsidies and programs, including intrastate programs and from the European Union. The main reason behind such a support lies on the needs of people for holidays, relax, health and food. The Republic of Kosovo has an area of 10.887 km2 and a population of 1.8 …

One of the biggest sources of pollution land and water are industrial waste waters. At section of zinc industry in complex Trepca during the process of zink production acquire(are gained or obtained) wastewater where their negative impact is wider extent of contamination of land with which it comes in contact and in this case comes to the accumulation ions of heavy metals, surface water and then mixing with groundwater and pollution. Directly with vulnerable is Sitnica river, in which contaminated water flows from the industrial unit for the production of Zn, which flows into the Ibar river, which still flows …

Physical-Chemical Characteristics Of The Substances Before And After The Discharge Of Factories Of The Detergents That Can Cause Increase Of The Degree Of The Eutrophication Of Surface Waters In The City Of Prizren, Sami Gashi, Ymerr Bajmaku, Petrit Drini

UBT International Conference

Industrial discharge waters, especially those of producers of detergents are one of the main polluters of surface waters in Prizren. The greatest polluters are: vehicle laundry and laundry of mega clothes, as well as factories producing liquid detergents, as well as powder ones. Concentration of active substances and perborate polyphosphate detergents also increase the wastewater from households. Therefore, we can say that the washing detergents, cleaning, are not safe for the environment, all of those are in varying degrees dangerous pollutants. Their presence represents the most acute problem of water supply in the city of Prizren. In this paper are …

Exploring The Presence Of Microplastics In Salt Creek, Troy J. Janesheski, Tiffany M. Tyler

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Rising concerns of microplastics, defined as synthetic polymeric materials less than 5 mm in diameter, have emerged over the past several years, due to the many potential and known negative implications on the ecosystem. While a great deal of research has taken place in marine ecosystems, very little work has been done in watersheds. Therefore, studies were carried out in the Salt Creek (IN), Lake Michigan watershed in effort to determine the type and extent of synthetic polymers present. Sediment and water samples have been collected, screened, and processed mostly by wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) to isolate microplastics from natural …

Fungal Bioremediation Of Human Solid Waste, Michael K. Watters, Alex Mehreteab, Victor Manzanilla, John Stewart, Mark Johnson

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The accumulation of solid human waste is a major problem for long-term space expeditions. Fungal bioremediation of human waste is a powerful solution to this problem. We report here the comparison of a variety of wild-type filamentous fungi for their ability to rapidly degrade solid waste. Certain strains of wild-type filamentous fungi, such a Neurospora crassa and Gelanispora cerealis, yielded waste to fungal-mass conversion rates of over 60 percent in seven days. Several strains, including Neurospora crassa, are edible and average about 50 percent amino acid content by mass, potentially providing a high-protein food generated in-flight to explorers of the …

Decomposition Of Antibiotics In Water Systems And The Impact On Microbial Communities, Abby Beavan, Ashita Bhatnagar

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Penicillin is one of the most prescribed antibiotics for humans and animals. As a result, unmetabolized penicillin is discharged into water systems, and bacteria in those water systems can become resistant. To better understand the lifetime of penicillin in water systems, the decomposition of Penicillin G (Pen G) in water solutions was studied. Simultaneously, the behavior of Staphylococcus aureus in these same solutions was analyzed. Four different aqueous solutions of 50 uM Pen G were studied: 1) water, 2)10 ppm Dissolved Organic Material (DOM), 3) 5mM NaHCO3, and 4) both DOM and NaHCO3. These solutions were analyzed weekly for 13 …

Review: Interspecies Ethics By Cynthia Willett, Thomas E. Randall Oct 2016

Review: Interspecies Ethics By Cynthia Willett, Thomas E. Randall

Between the Species

This paper provides a review of Cynthia Willett's book Interspecies Ethics. Willett aims to outline the beginnings of biosocial eros ethics – an ethical outline that sketches the potentiality of a cross-species cosmopolitan ideal of compassion (agape), derived through acknowledging and emphasizing the existence of spontaneous, playful interaction between social animals. Though this book is recommended for offering an innovative framework from which to explore the possibility of non-anthropocentric cross-species ethic, readers should be wary of expecting to find a fully-fledged moral program detailing how this would work.
