Supporting Sensemaking Of Complex Objects With Visualizations: Visibility And Complementarity Of Interactions, Kamran Sedig, Paul Parsons, Hai-Ning Liang, Jim Morey

All Works

Making sense of complex objects is difficult, and typically requires the use of external representations to support cognitive demands while reasoning about the objects. Visualizations are one type of external representation that can be used to support sensemaking activities. In this paper, we investigate the role of two design strategies in making the interactive features of visualizations more supportive of users’ exploratory needs when trying to make sense of complex objects. These two strategies are visibility and complementarity of interactions. We employ a theoretical framework concerned with human–information interaction and complex cognitive activities to inform, contextualize, and interpret the effects …

Cardiovascular Regulation By Kvβ1.1 Subunit, Jared Tur Oct 2016

Cardiovascular Regulation By Kvβ1.1 Subunit, Jared Tur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Heterologous expression systems such as COS-7 cells have demonstrated the profound effects of KCNAB1-3 or Kvβ1-3 proteins on voltage gated potassium channels (Kv) channels. Indeed, in the presence of these β-subunits transiently expressed Kv channels are often modulated in multiple ways. Kv channel membrane expression is often increased in the presence of β-subunits. In addition, non-inactivating Kv currents suddenly become fast-inactivating and fast-inactivating channels become even faster. While much research has demonstrated the profound effects the β-subunits in particular the Kvβ1 subunit have on transiently expressed Kv currents little to date is known of the physiological role it may play. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The aim of this study was to determine if Eurycoma longifolia in combination with maca root could be effective in treating women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Using a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over, case study design we evaluated the hypothesis that E. longifolia and maca root (3400 total mg/day) supplementation by premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder would imporve mood, libido, overall quality of life, muscular strength, and aerobic capacity. E. longifolia and maca root su[[lementation did not elicit positive changes in muscular strength or aerobic capacity. Further investigation using a larger sample size may evalutate the aphrodisiac properties of …

In Vivo Calcium Imaging Study Of The Geniculate Ganglion And The Taste Transmission In The Periphery, An Wu Oct 2016

In Vivo Calcium Imaging Study Of The Geniculate Ganglion And The Taste Transmission In The Periphery, An Wu

Open Access Dissertations

Taste information travels from the taste end organ, taste buds, to gustatory sensory neurons before integrating into central gustatory regions. In taste buds, receptor cells transduce sweet, bitter, or umami taste. Presynaptic cells directly transduce sour taste although they respond to multiple tastes as well via cell-cell communications. Salty taste is believed to be sensed by ENaC-expressing taste cells. Despite this consensus about coding in taste buds, whether information in gustatory sensory neurons is organized following the labeled-line theory or more complex coding mechanisms remains controversial. The geniculate ganglion is a major sensory ganglion of the gustatory system; it innervates …

Inefficient Inequality, Shi-Ling Hsu Oct 2016

Inefficient Inequality, Shi-Ling Hsu

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

For the past several decades, much American lawmaking has been animated by a concern for economic efficiency. At the same time, broad concerns over wealth and income inequality have roiled American politics, and still loom over lawmakers. It can be reasonably argued that a tension exists between efficiency and equality, but that argument has had too much purchase over the past few decades of lawmaking. What has been overlooked is that inequality itself can be allocatively inefficient when it gives rise to collectively inefficient behavior. Worse still, some lawmaking only masquerades as being efficiency-promoting; upon closer inspection, some of this …

Dynamic Perception Of Dynamic Affordances: Walking On A Ship At Sea, Hannah Walter, Jeffrey B. Wagman, Nicholas Stergiou, Nurtekin Erkmen, Thomas A. Stoffregen Oct 2016

Dynamic Perception Of Dynamic Affordances: Walking On A Ship At Sea, Hannah Walter, Jeffrey B. Wagman, Nicholas Stergiou, Nurtekin Erkmen, Thomas A. Stoffregen

Journal Articles

Motion of the surface of the sea (waves, and swell) causes oscillatory motion of ships at sea. Generally, ships are longer than they are wide. One consequence of this structural difference is that oscillatory ship motion typically will be greater in roll (i.e., the ship rolling from side to side) than in pitch (i.e., the bow and stern rising and falling). For persons on ships at sea, affordances for walking on the open deck should be differentially influenced by ship motion in roll and pitch. Specifically, the minimum width of a walkable path should be greater when walking along the …

Building Viral Replication Organelles: Close Encounters Of The Membrane Types, Peter D. Nagy, Jeroen R. P. M. Strating, Frank J. M. Van Kuppeveld Oct 2016

Building Viral Replication Organelles: Close Encounters Of The Membrane Types, Peter D. Nagy, Jeroen R. P. M. Strating, Frank J. M. Van Kuppeveld

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Positive-strand (+)RNA viruses are important and emerging pathogens of humans, animals, and plants. Upon infection, they induce the formation of specialized membranous replication organelles with unique lipid composition to facilitate robust virus replication. In this article, the authors discuss the proviral role of virus-induced membrane contact sites (vMCSs). The emerging picture is that vMCSs channel lipids to viral membranes and tune the lipid composition for optimal generation and functioning of replication organelles.

Nitrogen Biogeochemistry In Binghamton, Ny, A Medium-Sized Urban Ecosystem, Stephanie Craig Oct 2016

Nitrogen Biogeochemistry In Binghamton, Ny, A Medium-Sized Urban Ecosystem, Stephanie Craig

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Humans have altered nitrogen (N) cycling on a global scale, and elevated nitrogen levels are characteristic of urban ecosystems. The major reasons that N is higher in cities include imports of food, fuel and fertilizer. High N export from both point- and nonpoint-sources is common in large cities. While N cycling has been studied in large urban areas, less is known about its cycling in medium-sized cities, such as Binghamton, N.Y. We found that point-source N exported from the Binghamton-Johnson City Wastewater Treatment Plant (B-JC WWTP) was greater than nonpoint-source N exported from eight urban streams to the Susquehanna River, …

The Intestinal Parasites Of An Assemblage Of Stream Fishes In Central Utah, Matthew Rambo, Ashlee N. Smith, Mehmet Cemal Oguz, Mark C. Belk Oct 2016

The Intestinal Parasites Of An Assemblage Of Stream Fishes In Central Utah, Matthew Rambo, Ashlee N. Smith, Mehmet Cemal Oguz, Mark C. Belk

Western North American Naturalist

Parasite communities of stream fish assemblages in the western United States are poorly known. We investigated the intestinal parasites of an assemblage of stream fishes in Spanish Fork River in central Utah, USA. Two species, mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii) and redside shiner (Richardsonius balteatus), had no observable parasites. In the other 3 species, southern leatherside chub (Lepidomeda aliciae), mountain sucker (Catostomus platyrhynchus), and longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae), we identified metacercia of an unidentified trematode. We found adult cestodes in southern leatherside chub only. Prevalence and intensity of parasites was highest …
