Topical Treatment Of Actinic Keratosis And Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer With Phospho-Sulindac And Difluoromethylornithine, Yajing Sun
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Actinic keratosis (AK), a cutaneous lesion resulting from the proliferation of atypical epidermal keratinocytes, has an incidence of 11%-26% and its prevalence is 58 million in the US alone. AK is a precursor to non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). NMSC, consisting of squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas, represents the most frequent human cancer. Current treatment for AK and NMSC is often limited by low efficacy, side effects, high cost, and undesirable cosmetic outcomes. Thus new agents for the treatment of AK are urgently needed. In an effort to develop an efficacious, safe and patient-acceptable approach to both AK and NMSC, …
Targeting The Enoyl-Acp Reductase In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis: Mechanism Of Time Dependent Inhibition And Cellular Consequence Of Target Engagement, Weixuan Yu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tuberculosis (TB) infection is the single most lethal bacterial infections in the world. Isoniazid (INH), one of the most effective anti-TB drugs is usually administered to treat latent TB infection and is used in combination therapy to treat active TB. However resistance to INH is common and the emergence of multi-drug-resistant, extensively drug-resistant and now totally drug-resistant strains of TB, has resulted in an urgent need to develop novel anti-TB drugs. INH targets InhA, the enoyl-ACP reductase (FabI) from the Type II fatty acid biosynthesis pathway, and resistance to INH usually results from mutations in KatG, the enzyme that activates …
Antecedents And Outcomes Associated With Altered Neuroendocrine Coupling In A Young Adolescent Sample, Sarah Rose Black
Antecedents And Outcomes Associated With Altered Neuroendocrine Coupling In A Young Adolescent Sample, Sarah Rose Black
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Previous research has identified puberty as a time of marked vulnerability to negative psychological outcomes, despite the fact that most individuals navigate this transition with little disturbance. The current study investigated neuroendocrine coupling, or the extent to which hormone reactivity is correlated, as a potential mechanism explaining the relationship between puberty and negative outcomes, as well as investigating early life stressors that may influence hormone coupling patterns. Cortisol, DHEA, and testosterone levels were collected from 394 9-year-old children as part of a larger longitudinal study investigating temperament and psychopathology; previously collected information about parenting styles, parental psychopathology, and parental marital …
The Impact Of Weight-Related Abuse On Self-Perception And Disordered Eating: A Model Of Obesity, Jessica Keefe Salwen
The Impact Of Weight-Related Abuse On Self-Perception And Disordered Eating: A Model Of Obesity, Jessica Keefe Salwen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Obesity affects approximately one-third of the adult population in the U.S. and is one of the primary reasons for bullying in school. While weight-related abuse (WRA) is a specific risk factor for disordered eating (binge eating, emotional eating, night eating, and unhealthy weight control) and negative self-perception, and disordered eating and negative self-perception are predictive of obesity, these relationships have not been addressed with a comprehensive model. Thus, the current study evaluated a structural equation model in which severity of WRA predicted the emotional impact of WRA and negative self-perception, which predicted disordered eating, which in turn predicted current body …
An Analysis Of Peer Effects In The Credit Rating Market, Bo He
An Analysis Of Peer Effects In The Credit Rating Market, Bo He
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This paper empirically examines the peer eects among credit rating agencies (CRA) and the credit rating shopping behavior by bond issuers in the sub-prime mortgage market. The recent sub-prime mortgage crisis has raised the controversy that CRA's rating decisions might not be independent. For example, Moody's rating decisions might be aected by S&P, and vice versa. My studies analyzes the peer eects on Moody's and S&P's rating decisions, while taking into account the selection of CRAs by bond issuers. This selection process is also called credit rating shopping. At the issuance of mortgage-backed securities, bond issuers solicit ratings from CRAs. …

Essays On The Macroeconomic Consequences Of Market Frictions, Xin Tang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis studies the implications of firms' and households' decisions on macro and environmental aggregates in economies with market frictions using quantitative macroeconomic methods. The thesis consists three chapters. In each chapter, I study respectively the effects of product market frictions on firms' emission decisions, the effects of financial frictions on firms' hiring decisions, and those on households' consumption-saving choices. In Chapter 2, I study the effects of product market frictions on firm size distribution and its subsequent impact on aggregate output and industrial pollution in China. Using a unique micro-level manufacturing census, I find that larger firms generate and …

Over the past couple of decades, digital design has prospered many miles. The availability of advanced EDA tools help cut design times, debugging issues and time-to-market (TTM). Understanding the digital design flow has now become crucial and many IP cores are being built in no time with use of advanced tools. The tools for front-end, back-end simulations have given industry freedom to experiment new complex designs. The productivity of a digital designer is also a function of his ability to step up of a ramp and use the EDA tools to achieve faster designs and get the job done. Tools …
Harnessing Multicore Parallelism For High Performance Data Replication, Tan Li
Harnessing Multicore Parallelism For High Performance Data Replication, Tan Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
High speed data replication is vital to the data intensive scientific computing that often requires transferring large volumes of observation and simulation data efficiently among geographically dispersed facilities. Enterprise cloud services also depend on effective data replication to scale out of their own data centers, and to optimize work completed per dollar invested. In addition, end consumers are also extremely sensitive to the latency and responsiveness to share data within the network of friends, web-based services and their personal mobile devices. Recent hardware advances offer the opportunity to enable ultra high-speed data replication by aggressively adding more CPU cores, higher …
Improvements In Lesion Detection In X-Ray Breast Tomosynthesis And In Emission Tomography, Yihuan Lu
Improvements In Lesion Detection In X-Ray Breast Tomosynthesis And In Emission Tomography, Yihuan Lu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cancerous lesions can be viewed using several medical imaging modalities. I address breast cancer as seen in contrast-enhanced dual-energy digital breast tomosynthesis (CE-DE-DBT) and liver imaging of liver neuroendocrine metastases as seen by SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography). The overall goal is to enhance the ability to detect such lesions by improvements in image acquisition and data processing methods. In CE-DE-DBT the presence of scattered photons can yield image artifacts that mask the breast lesion. I present a scatter correction method based on interpolating scatter tails at the image periphery. I validate the method using a pinhole array technique …

Problems And Solutions For Backscatter-Based Tag-To-Tag Communication In The Internet Of Things, Zhe Shen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The Internet of Things (IoT) has been developing for decades and has been considered as the future of the Internet. The basic idea of the IoT is to enable a wide range of objects (things) around us to interact and cooperate with each other so that certain goals are reached. An important technology that will be part of the IoT is Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID). RFID is based on the concept of backscatter-based communication and the use of inexpensive RFID tags. A very exciting direction of work in the last few years has been the research on backscatter-based tag-to-tag (BBTT) …
Writing At The Intersection: Understanding International Student Writers, Soni Adhikari
Writing At The Intersection: Understanding International Student Writers, Soni Adhikari
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In U.S. colleges and universities, non-native English speaking international students are generally described in terms of their challenges with the English language. Even after the focus of scholarship has recently shifted to these students’ strengths as “multilingual†writers, their challenges and strengths in other areas of their development as writers are still overlooked. This thesis addresses the need to inform and influence teaching/learning practices about international multilingual students by using multidimensional frameworks. Considering that international students’ challenges (and strengths) of language intersect with a variety of other academic skills and also their motivation to learn, I argue that in order …
In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella
In Defense Of Magic: Using Fantasy Literature In The Classroom, Marisa Florence Cignarella
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis argues for the greater inclusion of fantasy literature in high school and middle school English classrooms. Through an analysis of the popularity of fantasy series, including recent movies and their widespread pop cultural appeal, this thesis illustrates that fantasy resonates with many readers. A close examination of various works of fantasy literature appropriate to be read in full or excerpted in the classroom demonstrates that fantasy usefully illustrates various literary concepts, such as symbolism, metaphor, allusion, allegory, and character foils; provides clear examples of the hero's journey, which appear in various canonical texts as well as other media; …
Molly's Lips: Telephonic Interiority In The " Penelope" Episode Of Ulysses, Lennox Nicholas Debra
Molly's Lips: Telephonic Interiority In The " Penelope" Episode Of Ulysses, Lennox Nicholas Debra
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Molly Bloom's episode “Penelope†at the end of Ulysses is a pronounced narrative of her unique consciousness, yet it is the only first person narrative in the entire work that is interrupted by the gaze of the author. When the final episode of Ulysses begins, Molly’s narrative is one that seeks to give her a voice and narrative and there by constructs a gaze from which we as readers seek to in order to gain a better understanding of her character’s consciousness; yet, Molly’s acknowledgement of “Jamesy†alludes to a veiled characterization inherent to Molly Bloom. Why is she given …
Convergent Lagrangian Particle Algorithms For Compressible Fluid Dynamics, Hsin-Chiang Chen
Convergent Lagrangian Particle Algorithms For Compressible Fluid Dynamics, Hsin-Chiang Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The goal of this thesis is the study of Lagrangian particle methods for complex multiscale hydrodynamic problems. This research has been motivated by difficulties arising in traditional mesh-based methods for the simulation of certain classes of highly non-uniform, complex free surface or multiphase problems. For such problems, Eulerian meshes enhanced with special algorithms for resolving interfaces such as volume-of-fluid, the level set method, arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian methods, or the method of front tracking which is a hybrid method involving a moving Lagrangian mesh over a fixed Eulerian mesh, are often used. In addition, they require adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). All …
Festivity And Malvolio In Twelfth Night, Lixian Huang
Festivity And Malvolio In Twelfth Night, Lixian Huang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Twelfth Night is a play full of merrymaking, wish fulfillment and laughter because of its close relation to festivity in Elizabethan times. In the overall jolly atmosphere in the Twelfth Night, Malvolio is the one character in this play that acts as an opponent to revelry. This essay aims to study the festival theme in Twelfth Night, and Malvolio’s disruptive role in it. It includes a study of Malvolio’s understanding of himself, his changes through the development of the play and how those work on the audience especially his unresolved ending. I argue that though Malvolio is positioned as the …
Beyond Compare: Nineteenth Century Poets And The Stigmatization Of Genre, Elizabeth Julia Hershman
Beyond Compare: Nineteenth Century Poets And The Stigmatization Of Genre, Elizabeth Julia Hershman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
What is " a classic" ? The OED defines it as: " A writer, or a literary work, of the first rank and of acknowledged excellence" . Significantly the etymology also links it with another English noun: " class" . This suggests that the idea of literary worth conveyed by " classic" , and the idea of categorization implied by " class" are deeply intertwined. Starting in what is usually referred to as the Romantic Period, many writers seemed eager to reject such labels altogether. I believe that this is because, around the turn of the nineteenth century, genre itself …
Statistical Methods For Optimizing Task Performance In Nuclear Medicine Imaging And In X-Ray Breast Imaging, Lin Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In many medical imaging systems used in radiology, the hardware delivers raw data to a sensor and a computer is used to convert the sensor data to a viewable image by implementing tomographic reconstruction algorithms. The radiologist views the image and performs a task, such as detecting a lesion. Engineers and applied mathematicians seek to improve medical imaging systems by making hardware changes and changes in the reconstruction algorithm. Improvement in this thesis is measured by scalar figures of merit, FOM, for task performance. We consider two modalities: SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) and Contrast-Enhanced DBT (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis). …

Address To The Letter: Frankenstein, Pamela, And The Epistolary Novel, Peter Walsh
Address To The Letter: Frankenstein, Pamela, And The Epistolary Novel, Peter Walsh
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, is rarely classified as an epistolary novel. Many readers actually forget that the novel begins as a series of letters between an arctic explorer and his sister. The framing device of the letter used by Shelley cites the revered history of the epistolary novel in the previous century, most notably those of Samuel Richardson. Richardson used the epistolary form in his novels to create what Ian Watt refers to as “formal realism†. Richardson presents his novels as truth objects by employing the epistolary frame, but Shelley uses the form to reject the …
Heroes In Patrick Mchale's Over The Garden Wall, Justine Nicole Wilson
Heroes In Patrick Mchale's Over The Garden Wall, Justine Nicole Wilson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The presented Thesis asserts Patrick McHale’s Over the Garden Wall as a Modern Epic. It identifies the piece as Dantesque in its structure of a journey through an underworld, while noting that Dante is not the hero of his own epic. The argument is made that while Dante is too inactive in determining his fate to be given the title of epic Hero, McHale’s protagonists Wirt and Greg follow the structure of epic heroes, of the ancient tradition. The purpose of two protagonist on the same personal journey that is a spiritual odyssey, is maintained as a catalyst that allows …
An Empirical Study On Concentration-Qtc Model, Tian Feng
An Empirical Study On Concentration-Qtc Model, Tian Feng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
QT interval is a measure of the time from the beginning of the Q wave to the end of the T wave in the heart's electrical cycle, it is often corrected to lessen its dependence to heart rate, and the corrected value is known as the QTc interval. Prolongation of the QTc interval is a primary biomarker for assessing proarrhythmic risk of drugs, thus it is routinely evaluated in new drug development. Concentration-QTc model with data from early phase single ascending dose (SAD) study is widely used to evaluate the drug-induced QTc prolongation, and the mixed effects model (MEM) is …

Turbulent Combustion Study Of Scramjet Problem, Xiaoxue Gong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this thesis we study the turbulent mixing and turbulent combustion in a model scramjet combustor with a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) strategy. LES resolves the large and energetic motions while the small subscale motions are modeled. Here the filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a fifth- order finite difference Weighted-Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) scheme dimension by dimension. Subgrid terms are closed by the dynamic Smagorin- sky model. Chemical source terms are calculated directly using a finite rate chemistry model with a reduced chemistry mechanism. The equilibrium tur- bulent boundary layer model of J. Larsson is used to calculate the shear …

The Function Of Pqbp1, A Causative Gene For Renpenning Syndrome, During Early Neural Development In Xenopus, Jamina Oomen-Hajagos
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The pqbp1 (polyglutamine tract-binding protein 1) gene has been associated with a number of developmental and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntington’s disease, spinocerebellar ataxia type 1, and a variety of X-linked intellectual disabilities grouped together under the umbrella term Renpenning Syndrome. Renpenning Syndrome is an X-linked recessive disorder involving intellectual disability, as well as physical features such as microcephaly, micropthalmia, lean build, short stature, and small testes. Work in the Thomsen Lab previously determined that a disruption in cellular levels of PQBP1 can impact crucial developmental processes such as gastrulation and neural tube closure. A reduction in PQBP1 levels was …
Tgf-Β /Smad Signaling Through Dock4 Facilitates Lung Adenocarcinoma Metastasis, Jia-Ray Yu
Tgf-Β /Smad Signaling Through Dock4 Facilitates Lung Adenocarcinoma Metastasis, Jia-Ray Yu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The mechanisms by which transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) promotes lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) metastasis are largely unknown. Here, we report that in lung ADC cells TGF-beta potently induces expression of dedicator of cytokinesis 4 (DOCK4), but not other DOCK-family members, via the Smad pathway, and that DOCK4 induction mediates TGF-beta's pro-metastatic effects by enhancing tumor cell extravasation. TGF-beta-induced DOCK4 stimulates lung ADC cell protrusion, motility, and invasion, without affecting epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). These processes, which are fundamental to tumor cell extravasation, are driven by DOCK4-mediated Rac1 activation, unveiling a novel link between TGF-beta and Rac1. Thus, our findings uncover the …
Statistical Methods For Association Analysis Of Biological Data, Erya Huang
Statistical Methods For Association Analysis Of Biological Data, Erya Huang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Genome-wide association studies (GWA studies) are an important tool for identifying disease susceptibility variants for common and complex diseases. Traditional approaches to data analysis in GWA studies suffer with the multiple testing problem and also ignore any potential relationships between gene variants. We introduced here a novel two-stage framework with the combination of partial correlation network analysis (PCNA) and data mining techniques. This network-based technique, focusing on SNPs in joint modeling and their partial associations, alleviated the multiple testing problem and consequently increased the power to detect biologically relevant variants and their associations. Variable selection was achieved through penalized logistic …
In Situ Scattering And Modeling Approaches For The Discovery And Optimization Of Novel Mineral-Inspired Materials, William Richard Woerner
In Situ Scattering And Modeling Approaches For The Discovery And Optimization Of Novel Mineral-Inspired Materials, William Richard Woerner
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Exploratory synthesis, discovery of novel materials, and characterization of the structure – property relationship drives new technologies that might mitigate major global issues such as climate change. Central to these endeavors are the design of new approaches, apparatus, and improvements in existing sample environments, which allow one to observe the evolution of changes in atomic arrangements directly. The new techniques and strategies decrease the materials discovery-deployment cycle (DDC), a central goal of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI). The strategies developed and described in this dissertation, are broadly applicable to the MGI. However, they are particularly powerful when applied to: The …

The Modal Use Of The Present Progressive (Estar+Gerundio) In Spanish Speakers Of Lima's Variety, Jessica Cairo-Chrysafi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The verbal periphrasis estar+gerundio (EG) conjugated in simple present (estoy viajando) is the aspectual expression of progression in Spanish of an event that develops during the moment that is spoken (speech time S). Within Reichenbach's system of temporal relations, there is a coincidence relation with expression in the present tense between S and its point of reference R, and the relation is represented as S,R. The system identifies another time interval of the event E. With EG of progressive aspect the temporal relation is of coincidence between S and E, and it is represented as S,R,E. EG has also a …

Abstract of the Dissertation Postales turÃsticas en la narrativa, el cine y otros discursos mediáticos contemporáneos en la República Dominicana by Zaida Corniel Lineweaver Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literature Stony Brook University 2015 In this dissertation I examine representations of the relationship between local inhabitants and tourists in literature, film and media of the Dominican Republic. I explore the concept of “contact zones†(Mary Louis Pratt) in reference to tourism, and how the tourist industry reshaped national spaces bringing displacement and creating new borders inside the nation. I also analyze literary representations of the Dominican diaspora looking …
Analysis Of Three Geometric Optimization Problems: Local Greedy Routing In Triangulations, Touring Sequences Of Polygons, And Hitting Sets Of Segments, Kan Huang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Finding short paths to visit places and finding small sets to hit objects are two core problems in Computational Geometry. We consider these problems in various geometric settings. The first one is greedy routing in a triangulation, which has applications in sensor networks and robotic swarm exploration. The second problem we consider is finding the shortest path to tour a sequence of polygons (TPP). We prove the problem is NP-hard if the polygons are non-convex even they are disjoint. We also obtain results on TPP with time constraints, which means the visitor is required to stay in a polygon for …
