Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter Dec 2015

Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Recent articles such as Avison and Malaurent (2014) and Grover and Lyytinen (2015) question taken-for-granted assumptions about the centrality of theory in research published in leading journals and the near necessity of following repetitive scripts that sometimes are an obstacle to creativity. This paper goes a step further by providing examples and observations that illustrate five seemingly insurmountable challenges related to attaining long-term value from theorizing about information systems.

1) Divergent definitions of basic terms makes it extremely difficult to accumulate IS knowledge.

2) The IS discipline seems to take for granted that knowledge must take the form of theory. …

Feasibility Of A Peer Support Oriented Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training Massive Open Online Course For Emotion Dysregulation, Rachel Gill

Senior Theses

Public interest in mental health care modernization has steadily gained momentum since ratifying The United States Health Care Affordability Act (U.S. Office of the Legislative Counsel, 2010). Furthermore, with 1 in every 1000 people seeking online support for mental health issues (DeAndrea & Anthony, 2013), research concerning the development of virtual mental health applications is critical to ensure science guides their innovation. To this end, this study explores the feasibility of a mental health intervention that unites the experiential, recovery-oriented, and self-determined values of mental health peer support (Kaufman et al., 2014) with dialectical behavior therapy skills training (DBT-ST) (Linehan, …

Scoliosis Analog Model For The Evaluation Of Bracing Technology, Chloe Ly Chung Dec 2015

Scoliosis Analog Model For The Evaluation Of Bracing Technology, Chloe Ly Chung

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Thoracolumbar braces are commonly used to treat Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). Braces serve to reduce and prevent progression of the spinal curve by applying corrective forces. The magnitude and direction of these corrective forces applied by the brace to the spine remain unknown. Additionally the brace fitting process involves making alterations to the brace that affect its corrective force capacity. The objective was to design and validate an analog model of a mid-thoracic single curve scoliotic deformity for quantifying structural properties of the brace and the force response of the brace on the spine. This model was used to investigate …

The Economic Effects Of Outer Continental Shelf Oil And Gas Exploration And Developement In The South Atlantic Region: Issues And Assessment, Charles Colgan

Publications

In 2013, the American Petroleum Institute and the National Ocean Industries Association, oil and gas industry groups, commissioned Quest Offshore Resources, Inc., to prepare a report (the Quest report) on the economic impacts of offshore drilling in the Atlantic. This report has been widely cited to make the case for opening the Southeast to oil and gas development based on significant local, state, and regional benefits from drilling.

The report, however, was based on an incomplete and misleading economic picture, which resulted in overstating the likely regional economic effects of offshore oil and gas exploration and development.

This summary identifies …

Duty Hour Limitations And Educational Outcomes: Perspectives From A Community Hospital-Based Family Medicine Residency Program, Maria Eliza Marquise Dec 2015

Duty Hour Limitations And Educational Outcomes: Perspectives From A Community Hospital-Based Family Medicine Residency Program, Maria Eliza Marquise

Theses & Dissertations

In 2003, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association introduced new models that established limits on residents’ duty hours in training programs across the United States (Miulli & Valcore, 2010; Philibert & Taradejna, 2011); more stringent limitations were implemented in 2011. If these physician training programs decreased the time residents’ spent in a formal learning environment and utilized experiential learning as one teaching method, did the duty hour limitations affect the residents’ learning outcomes? The purpose of this ex post facto, quantitative study was to determine if there were differences in ITE (In-Training Examination) scores …

Online Versus Face-To-Face Nutrition Courses At A Community College: A Comparative Study Of Learning Outcomes, Solomon Kumbong Nfor

Theses & Dissertations

Students have been gravitating towards the Online Learning Environment (OLE). The preference for online learning models (OLM) among students has grown more rapidly than for traditional face-to-face models in community colleges in the United States of America. Research about OLMs has focused on teaching efficiency and effectiveness to support the growth of online education. Administrators and teachers have continually sought to gain more knowledge about this issue, especially with concerns regarding engagement of students in an online learning environment. Increased student dissatisfaction with online learning models, a high withdrawal rate, and inadequate student-learning outcomes are some of the factors that …

Perspectives Of Hispanic Men Who Overcame The Odds To Become Senior Leaders, Esequiel Jose Mora

Theses & Dissertations

Driven by the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the United States, ethnic minorities will become the new majority group in the next 30 to 40 years. Yet, despite the substantial increase of Hispanics in this country, they remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions. This dissertation explored the perspectives of Hispanic male leaders to determine how they overcame barriers to successfully reach the senior leader levels. This topic is important for two reasons: (a) as U.S. businesses expand globally, they will need diverse leaders who can understand and relate to various cultures, and (b) with the increasing purchasing power …

Second-Billed But Not Second-Rate: A Reappraisal Of Three Character Actors From Hollywood’S Golden Age, Candace M. Graham

Theses & Dissertations

Seventy-six years ago Hollywood experienced something never before nor since seen. The year, 1939, was Hollywood’s “Dream Year” for production of some of the most memorable films of all time. Today, the term used to describe films of this success level is blockbuster. Film scholars and fans call them classics. It was the culmination of films of Hollywood’s Golden Age starring every one of Hollywood’s A-Listers of this Golden Age of film, from Don Ameche to Loretta Young. However, lost in this maze of the top-billed or leading actors were the character actors who were also known as supporting cast …

Mentoring, Job Satisfaction, Job Dissatisfaction, And Organizational Commitment Among Graduate Nurses, Abisola Adeyomibo Santos

Theses & Dissertations

Shortage of bedside nurses has been researched for a long time. Many researchers have referred to different shortage percentages, but the American Nurse Association stated that the shortage of bedside nurses would increase in the range of 29% to 36% by 2020. It is also reported that a large number of newly graduated, newly hired nurses leave within one year as compared to newly hired experienced nurses. The purpose of this correlational study was to evaluate the influence of mentoring, mediating job satisfaction, job dissatisfaction, and, therefore, organizational commitment, on nurses who completed the nurse residency program between January 2010 …

Charcot Marie Tooth Disease (CMT) is the most common progressive inherited neurological disease. Proteins in the myelin sheath of both motor and sensory nerves become damaged, resulting in muscle atrophy and reduced sensation. Patients experience difficulty with gait, balance, and independence with ADLs. The RUSK Modified Romberg Program (MRP) is a balance program used for patients with neurological pathologies. There is minimal research on the effectiveness of the RUSK MRP in patients with CMT. The purpose of this case report was to determine the effectiveness of the RUSK MRP in order to improve balance and reduce risk of falls in …

A Task Oriented Approach For A Patient With Chronic Effects Of Stroke: A Case Report, Sarah Richardson, Amy J. Litterini Dec 2015

A Task Oriented Approach For A Patient With Chronic Effects Of Stroke: A Case Report, Sarah Richardson, Amy J. Litterini

Case Report Posters

Stroke is the leading cause of serious long-term disability for American adults. Most stroke survivors receive physical therapy (PT) and task-oriented rehabilitation is one novel approach. This technique, which shifts the focus from the impairment level to activity level, is known to benefit stroke survivors. However, the benefits for long-term survivors of stroke are not yet well established. PT professionals would benefit from learning about innovative interventions to improve functional mobility for long-term stroke survivors. The rationale for this report was to document the outcomes of a task-oriented approach to rehabilitation on the late effects of stroke. The unique aims …

The Role Of Physical Therapy In The Treatment And Discharge Of An Elderly Homeless Patient With Fractures Of The T12-L1 Vertebrae: A Case Report, Matthew Kraft

Case Report Posters

More than 600,000 are homeless in the USA. Homeless people have higher rates of premature mortality than the rest of the population, especially from unintentional injuries, and have an increased prevalence of mental disorders. Hospitals often encounter difficulty with discharge when homeless patients are medically stable enough to be transferred to a lower level of care. Hospitals risk potential legal action and poor portrayal by the media if a homeless patient claims he/she was discharged improperly.

Gait Training, Strength Training, And Pain Management Of A 26 Year Old Female Recovering From A Multiple Sclerosis Exacerbation: A Case Report, Ellen Cox

Case Report Posters

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder where it is thought that the body attacks the myelin sheath covering nerve fibers and disrupts communication in the central nervous system. Presentations are varied with symptoms ranging from loss of vision, poor balance and coordination, tremors, fatigue, pain, and problems with memory and concentration. MS is classified into four types in order of severity: relapsing- remitting, secondary-progressive, primary-progressive, and progressive-relapsing. Evidence links stressful events to increased risk for exacerbations. Treatment of MS can be variable due to the multiple presentations and progressions of disease. Currently little information is available regarding the most …

Literature circles are an ideal reading instructional method when it comes to holding students accountable for their own understanding of literature. The research question asked in this study was, “How do literature circles improve comprehension?” Research was collected on six primary leveled students at Freedom Charter School (pseudonym) in Western New York. Through a questionnaire, pre and post-assessments, student work, and field notes, there was a noticeable increase in comprehension of the chosen text within this study once literature circle sessions came to a conclusion. Teachers must be thoughtful when it comes to choosing literature used in literature circles, constructing …
